Average. Since this our first experience with Korean BBQ we went with others more experienced. Service was average since they missed coming back into our room. Party of 13. All protein choices in the 'combo' are very fatty, this might be the case in this type of food so we were unaware of it. I love this Korean place, and it's one of my favorites! Service: Their service is okay, but sometimes they can forget about you! The more I've been, the more they don't check up on me which should be the other way around haha. Atmosphere: Its a nice place to just eat; nothing fancy since it's just a typically Asian place to dine into. Everyone is enjoying their food and seems satisfied. Pricing: Its decent for the amount your getting...Korean food is generally pricy in my opinion. Lately I feel like their portions have gotten smaller? At least in the galbi which what my boyfriend says. It's still okay, a lot of places are more pricier. Food: We always get the Galbi! And a big soup. The Galbi is perfectly flavorful and the soup is soooo good. Although we tried a different kind of soup with the beef in it and I didn't like it since it was way too sweet. In my humble opinion, this is the best Korean food available in the Nashville area. Baseline: my sister in law is Korean and makes some mean Korean food. This is the only place she'll go to for Korean food. She introduced me. The only better Korean food I've had was at Kimchihana in South Plainfield, New Jersey. Not a white face in sight except for my man---all Korean patrons and large large parties of patrons. It was always full. Ridiculously good Korean food. The standouts: Seafood pancake--ask for it thin and extra crispy. Otherwise they'll make it chunky with too much flour--that covers up the very generous portions of seafood. House made kimchi-you can buy this in quarts and take it home. Galbi--garlicky crosscut ribs. Arrives at your table super hot to the touch. Gnaw on the cartilage and slurp up the charred marrow. Spicy pork--this is similar to Bulgogi but oh so different. It has been marinated in asian pear until the meat is fork tender. Swimming in Gojujaru -- the ubiquitous Korean roasted red pepper -- savory and perfect with a bite of steaming hot Korean rice. Yukaejang--red spicy soup with beef and bracken -- it will warm you thoroughly. Not sour like the kimchi jigae, but savory and deep with pieces of shredded beef, enoki mushrooms, and sprouts. Boodaejang--spam stew. This recipe was developed around that infamous American potted meat. It also has "sausages" (actually hot dogs), quarter sized rice cakes, on a bed of curly ramen noodles, kimchi, all in a flat paella-styled hot pot. This is spicy hot and warming. Salty goodness. This soup is just WRONG on paper but in real life, well, you've got to try it. I loved it even more 2 days later. Kimchijigae--pretty well done here. This is the infamous kimchi soup--where all the super far gone kimchi go b/c old kimchi never dies. When it's too sour to eat, it's right for kimchi soup. But don't be fooled into thinking it might be just sour soup. There are layers of flavors: deep roasted Gojujaru, silky fatty pork belly, and toothsome sour kimchi. All that action could be a bit much if it weren't for the relief you get from the soft chunks of semi-firm tofu. Good selection of standard Japanese beers. Why no Korean beers? The soft spots: Hai Woon Dae suffers from location. It always looks a little deserted in the parking lot but don't be fooled. They have a lot of foot traffic here for dinner--I've been twice for lunch and they were decently busy. Location. Location. Bulgogi is not my favorite here but if you have little guys, it is not spicy and kids usually love it. Dumplings--a little thick but will do if you're jonesin' for some mandool. Final Tip: The friendly ladies who will take care of you on your visit eat their own cooking. Ask them what they're eating and what their favorite dishes are and try it. The worst that can happen, you don't like it and you're out a little money. You could also get your mind blown and find a new favorite Korean dish. That's priceless. read more

I wish there was an option to give 4.5 . Everything overall was great but I just have a couple of pointers. We ordered the Korean BBQ Combo H (servings for 2 people) and an order of the japchae noodles. All of the traditional sides are amazing (kimchi, macaroni salad, potato's, etc). The combo comes with white rice and egg pudding, salad, and lettuce. My only complaint about the food is that the noddles were extremely greasy. The noodles were literally swimming in oil. The only other complaint I have is that the staff was a bit overbearing. I know that's something you wouldn't expect from dining out but the staff kept flooding our grill with food. We chose to come dine here because he know it would be quite and enjoy our dinner but unfortunately I was wrong. He kept interrupting our conversation and placing more meat on our grill when we wanted to pace ourselves. Some of our cures ended up getting burnt since we couldn't eat as fast. Authentic and absolutely deee-licious from each side dish to their meat. My favorite is Galbi marinated short ribs. The meat is of quality and very flavorful. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into when I rolled up to Hai Woon Dai. "People get mugged and murdered in parking lots like this," I thought to myself as I pulled into the parking lot with no visibility to the main road. Well you can call me a weeny, but I got over myself, took a chill pill and walked to the front door. My fight/flight emotions subsided as soon as I smelled the delicious odors of the various meats and sauces floating through the air. I started with the fried dumplings, which were pretty incredible. Crispy, meaty and flavorful! My main dish was the Dolsot Bibimbap. This was a fantastic dish with perfectly cooked meat, plenty of fresh veggies and a good amount of rice. DON'T TOUCH THE STONE POT! The accompanying sides were fresh, delicious and plentiful. I would definitely recommend this place, and I will be back. This is the best Korean food I've had in Nashville so far. read more

I went back to Hai Woon Dai recently with my husband and parents, and I liked it even more! We went in for a Saturday lunch, and almost every table was filled. Lots of Korean people too, which is always a good sign. The place is no-frills (from the cups to tables to strip mall and parking lot/location), but I will come back again and again. My mother, who is Korean, loved her seafood soondobu (tofu soup). My father cleaned his heaping plate of bulgogi clean. Husband loved his japchae and had enough to take home leftovers. I could barely finish my spicy chicken gogi. Overall, while it isn't cheap, the portions make up for the pricing. Dad felt like he got his $16 worth of bulgogi, and it was very tasty. Also, my mother asked for refills on certain banchan, and we got them quickly. I saw some reviews mentioning lack of banchan refills, but I think you just have to ask and specify which ones you want, vs. them refilling all the dishes and having more food waste. In addition, the meal was served quickly. We were in and out in an hour, which is good because it gave us time to shop at the Korean grocery next door before I had to head to Korean class. read more

So we went here last night for my friend's birthday dinner. We all love Korean and my friend convinced us that this hole-in-the-wall was worth it. I have mixed feelings. Some things are good here while other things are not. The banchan was not very good. The only saving grace was probably the kimchi. There were no spicy cucumbers which are one of my favorites so I can't say if they are good We had the bean spouts that had no flavor. The pickled daikon was OK. The fish cakes were not the best or freshest. The seaweed was OK. The banchan didn't make me feel so confident going into the appetizers we ordered for the table. Thankfully the kimchi pancake was DELICIOUS! I think that it's probably one of the best pancakes I have had in Nashville. It was quite orange versus other ones that I have eaten but it was still tasty and I loved how it had the right amount of crunch. The sauces were excellent with it too. We also ordered a Chinese-inspired korean dish that was mixed vegetables with tempura pork in a sweet chili sauce. This was my first time having it and I would come back just for this dish. It was full of flavor and the onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms were great with the tempura pork. For our main dish, we ordered two Galbi and two Bulgogi and Samgyeopsal. Hai Woon Dai knows how to make Galbi! I think that it was the best thing I tasted. I wanted more. Bulgogi was good but not to die for and the samgyeopsai was disappointing. I didn't like the sauce. I loved the lettuce so we could wrap the galbi and bulgogi. We were having a great time celebrating my friend so of course that was the main thing and overall- if you know WHAT to order here, you will come away SO pleased. I would come back again if I was craving kimchi pancakes or galbi. I'll find elsewhere for my banchan! The service was great and the lady is SO sweet. She will keep bringing you anything you'd like from banchan to rice or lettuce. You can't help but like her so I definitely think 3.5 is where I would rate this place overall. read more

After being here about 4 times after my initial review, I felt the need update. Hai Woon Dai is a small Korean restaurant in Antioch. It is in a small strip of businesses, most of them being Korean businesses. There is plenty of parking out front, even when it's really busy. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy. Minimal decorations and the seats and chairs are pretty basic. This is always a great sign for me. The focus is on the food and it feels very authentic. After living in South Korea for 4 years, this place feels like home (or what used to be my home). Because it's smaller, it gets pretty busy on the weekends. However, I've never had to wait for a table. They ask you how many you have in your party, you're seated, and then given a menu. The menu has a lot of options including Korean Barbecue. They don't have the big fancy built in grills like a traditional korean bbq, but instead comes on a tabletop grill. It seems to work just fine. I'm a huge Korean soup fan so I usually order the yukgaejang. It's a spicy red broth with glass noodles, shredded beef, and vegetables. I'm kind of wimpy when it comes to spicy things, so to me the soup is pretty spicy. Perfect for a cold winter day or if you have a cold. The soup comes with a side of rice so I suggest eating some of the soup and then adding the rice. I've also had the bibimbap, normal and hot. I would suggest the hot bibimbap (dolsot bibimap) because it makes the rice nice and crispy. Before you get your main food you get the traditional Korean banchan (small side dishes). The ones here are amazing. I sometimes don't like kimchi but this kimchi is very good. Try them all and get free refills on the ones you love! As far as drinks go, they have some alcohol like beer and soju. You can also get some hot tea. The prices here range from normal to a little pricey. It really depends on what you order. I believe my soup is usually $11 or 12. The meat is where it can get a little pricey. I know they have to import a lot of their ingredients so I can see why they would have to charge a bit more. However, if you want authentic Korea food, this is your place. My boyfriend is Korean and he gives it two thumbs up. They also offer take-out if you want to eat on the go or order larger amounts for a business party or something. read more

If not for bad, almost non-existent service, I'd easily give this 4 stars. I really enjoyed the beef bulgogi, the gyoza, and all the side dishes. The server never came to check on us. My wife only got a water refill after flagging someone down and asking. They didn't even put any ice in the refill. My drink never did refilled. I still tipped.. maybe they would share it with the kitchen staff? Doubt we'll be returning there. If you want good Korean food with good service, then I recommend Korea House downtown. read more

If you live in the relative Asian food desert that is Nashville, TN, you start believing that every decent looking photo of an Asian dish is just a mirage. I once believed there was a potential for dim sum when I first learned of Lucky Bamboo China Bistro but the dreams of dim sum soon turned into ashes in my mouth. Luckily, there's hope here: we have some legit Korean food. Hai Woon Dai rests on Antioch Pike and features a number of traditional Korean dishes like Bugolgi, Bi Bim Bap, and Soondubu Jigae. Like most Korean places, every entree comes with an assortment of Banchan, an assortment of small dishes that pair up with the food, creating a colorful and rich experience filled with kim chee and other pickled items. The Banchan here do not disappoint - they are like little pools of refreshing happiness for the hungry wanderer. Speaking of the hungry...let's talk about their Haemul Pajeon (seafood pancake). While it is listed under "appetizers," this beast could easily be a meal on its own. It's looks less like a pancake and more like a Chicago styled deep dish pizza. This gigantic "pancake" is thick, filled to the brim with shrimp, octopus and squid, green onions, and a delicious batter that is fried. It's very hot and crispy on the outside, so be careful lest you scorch and scrape the roof of your mouth. Inside, it is chewy and very satisfying. The Bugolgi, thin slices of marinated beef cooked on a stove-top griddle, was fairly average for Korean fare. It's slightly sweet, is very tender, and is packed with flavor from soy sauce, green onions, and sesame. You can either cook it at the table or have it cooked in the kitchen and served to you on a heated iron plate Other standout dishes here include the Seafood Sundubu, a spicy spoft tofu stew that is filled with sea creatures. It's served very, very warm and is perfectly paired with a small bowl of steamed rice. Here, the Sundubu really stands out - the broth is perfectly seasoned and the texture of soft tofu mixed with chewy squid is simply amazing. If you like soup, you might also like the Galbitang (Beef short rib soup) here too. It has bone-on short ribs that are cooked with a light, semi-clear broth that is filled with radishes, scallions, and thin ginger slices. Most of the time, this dish is heavily doused with black pepper which can easily overpower the delicateness of the vegetables. Hai Woon Dai's version of it is much better balanced than most. The short rib isn't quite as tender but the flavor is spot on. For a heartier soup, try one of their bowls of ramen. While the noodles taste slightly better than the instant packets you can buy at any grocery store, the way the soups are dressed really make it interesting. For example, the rice cakes and dumplings are doughy in the best possible way and are bursting with flavor. The portion size is also unexpectedly large, so it's a solid choice if you are hungry. If you're in the mood for something that is sweet and spicy, you can't go wrong with Nakji Bokkeum (spicy octopus), a stir fried dish of small octopus tentacles that are tossed with gochujang (red chili pepper paste), gochugaru (red chili pepper flakes), sesame oil, green onions, carrots, zucchini, and onions. It sounds much spicier than it actually is (think of a low-medium heat level). The octopus here is a running theme of deliciousness. Every dish that has octopus in it is a favorite. Perhaps if you are wandering a desert, there's nothing like seafood to bring you back to your senses and remind you that life is worth living. This is my favorite Korean restaurant in the Nashville area. You may miss it the first time that you try to find it since it's on the corner of an intersection in a small plaza. Other than that minor thing, it's a decent size restaurant with comfortable seating. It can get packed pretty quick though!
