As I am experiencing my quarter life crisis, I decided to make a drastic change in my appearance by chopping off all my hair. Seeing as I have had long hair all my life, this was a big move for me. Upon entering, I remember spotting one of the stylists and being intrigued by her simple but edgy look. Luckily, my boyfriend was assigned the same stylist I spotted who is none other than Mrs. Un Cha Kang. I loved the way his hair looked and how effortless it was to style. It was easy to see she has a lot of experience and a great sense of current style and trends. He quickly became a regular at the salon. So today I gathered all my courage and went to Hair Collage and requested only Mrs. Un Cha Kang. I showed her an image of the hair I wanted and gave her the option to switch it up as she liked. She showed me different images of styles she wanted to incorporate into my hair and got right to work. No words can express how in love I am with my new hair cut. Even my friends, who were skeptical with this change, loved it. She took the time to teach me how to style it and hearing that I work in a hospital, showed me how to switch from a professional look to a going out look easily. Those who are concerned with a possible language barrier need not worry, they try their best to convey their thoughts to you to give you exactly the cut you need and want. UPDATE: A month and a half later I went back to Mrs. Un Cha Kang. We decided to go shorter! My original cut was great and kept its shape for approximately a full month. When I passed that mark, my hair started to go limp from the weight of the excess hair. My hair is naturally straight with little to no volume so when it started to grow, gravity dragged everything down. This time, to counteract gravity, Mrs. Un Cha Kang spent well over 2 hours working on my hair. The sides were cut super short while the top was being permed with big rods so it would have volume on its own. The front was thinned out and framed my face. Her patience with each section of my hair was mind blowing. Watching her shape and shift my hair every few minutes, stepping away and examining how it looks, then coming back and snipping some more. There is a reason why I only go to Hair Collage even when I live in Philadelphia. I went there a year ago for cut and color. My hair has gotten the magic straight treatment multiple times so it is fragile. They used hair dye for my highlights (and not a bleach-base) so I had no broken hair strands or damaged ends! The cut was also great. My hair felt a lot lighter but no less voluminous. Fast forward a year, and I returned for a keratin digital perm since I was in the area with some time. Everyone's greatest fear is the strong curls that automatically age you 20 years, but the curls are huge (they used large rollers) and not frizzy. I have a picture uploaded with the result. Ms. Kang was thorough and gave me tutorials about how to style and take care of my hair. She really cares that you understand how to maintain the treatment you received. Near my roots, I got the (temporary) Brazilian because my hair is frizzy. The chemicals are potent, and when they do the blow out, you get a face mask. My only qualm is that the face mask is not enough because I was still inhaling the chemicals. Perhaps a double mask or a shield to cover the eyes as well? Almost a week later, my hair looks great. Don't go to a cheaper salon and risk having it getting done over. Ms. Kang really knows what she is doing. I will be returning in a few weeks to get magic straight done at the roots because the Brazilian I got was temporary and my hair is naturally frizzy. I've been coming here for three years, and I'll never get my hair cut anywhere else again. Gone are the days of cheap Chinatown haircuts - if you want real quality and attention to detail, this is the best hair salon around. If you're a first time customer, it might help to bring in photos of the kind of haircut you want. I would also call in advance since they can get pretty busy. I always ask for Choi - she works wonders. You'll notice how precise and careful they are. They don't just go whacking away with razors and scissors. There's a whole array of tools I didn't know existed! The result is a very flattering, clean cut, without a stray hair. This place saved my Rachel green hairdo. I went to a random hair salon in jersey and asked for a cut with a picture to follow and they gave me the second season Rachel green haircut. I was mortified. I had to find a hair salon in midtown/koreatown that could fix my hair and this place was my saving grace. They cut my hair and blended the ugly layers and texturized the ends. They even fixed the tiger highlights in my hair by toning them. I went back to Hair collage for hair coloring 3 weeks after initial visit. My original hair color was pretty dark and I was worried that coloring my hair soon after straightening process will damage my hair, but mrs. Kang made sure hat she uses best product for my hair. I have been getting my hair perm from Ms. Kang for the past 8 years. My hair was the typical Asian hair that is straight and flat. And I wanted it to be as curly as possibe. It's usually a 3-hour process - wash, cut, curl, wait, rinse, wait some more, wash, and blow dry. But I am always happy with the result. My hair looks naturally curly/wavy. The product used doesn't feel like harsh chemical. It doesn't smell and it doesn't damage my hair. I don't have to do much at all to maintain - after wash, I just apply curling lotion/spray, and let it air dry. The curl lasts about 8 months, so I only come once or twice a year. Ms. Kang can work miracles with your hair. I recently went to hair collage to get my hair fixed after a terrible experience i had at another salon. After the first hair salon, i was left with racoon stripes of varying shades of ash, gray, green and gold that left me looking older than my mom. I had asked for my hair dyed brown. I decided i couldnt take chances with getting it fixed by the same people again and came to hair collage which i had been to once before many years ago and remembered they had done a good job. Ms. Kang was able to fix the uneven highlights and tone them down from the various colors to a subtle dark brown. She also gave me some more highlights at the ends in a lighter shade so that my hair would be more on trend w the balayage style that is current. She knows her dyes and was careful to guide me to a decision that she knew would work for my situation and that id also be happy with. My hair is no longer damaged either. Ps. AMAZING hair wash. This place is the worst service I have ever had. If you speak only English, don't go to this place because the owner speaks only few english words and she thinks no one can understand if she speaks Korean. I asked for her opinion after I got my hair washed and she showed a really impatient and bad manner. She threw the brush on the floor and went checking out for another customer. And she said in Korean: I can't do this, thinking I couldn't understand her complain while I was the only customer in the room. Later she came back, she only smiled awkwardly back at me without a word. It only took her 20 minutes to get my medium long hair to a shoulder-length short hair, and it costs 62+tip. Went to Hair Collage on a rainy saturday afternoon after lunch and after a couple of minutes looking for the entrance on 5th ave, my friend and I found the entrance on 32nd street, not 5th ave. You walk in and there is an elevator and also staircase, but I recommend taking the elevator instead because the staircase is super narrow. The elevator brings you up to the front desk of the salon. Upon arrival, my friend and I were kindly greeted by a nice, young looking korean lady who then offered us complimentary a tea, coffee, or water. We both came in as walk in and were in desperate need of a hair cut. Despite being walk ins, the service was very quick and we both soon got called to get our hair done. The hair stylist we both got was Ms Choi. Woah, does she cut hair fast!!! I described what I wanted for my hair: long layers, 3 inches off, and just a trim of my bangs. She probably cut my hair in like 15 minutes, then styled for 10 minutes. Quickest hair cut I've ever had! Exactly what I asked for and what I needed. After the cut, my hair felt fresh, lighter, and most important healthier! No more dead hair, haha. I ended up paying $52.25. Thought it would be like $60 coz my hair was very long. I recently went to Hair Collage for keratin straightening. I was a little skeptical, I had gotten the treatment somewhere else, in San Francisco, a couple years prior and even though it looked ammmmazing straight, I was frustrated that my curls came back looking totally wack. It took my ringlets a good six months to regain their composure after last time, and that wasn't what I was looking for. What I wanted was long loose curls. Beachy curls. Not perfectly straight. Once I sat down I realized that not only did my stylist, Miss Kim, speak almost no english, there wasn't anyone at the salon who did speak english. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, I had no clue if it was going to work out, but I was like, let's just do this and hope for the best. Of course at the end of the treatment my hair was treated with a flat iron and it was super crazy straight. i had to wait TWO DAYS before I could wash it and reveal the real results. But boy when I did. Miss Kim you did not disappoint. My curls are EXACTLY WHAT I WANT. Beachy, long, even, round, silky totally beautiful. Still with so much volume, but now with so much more length. I am blown away by how amazing these ladies are. And now I will never ever never ever go anywhere else. I'm devoted for life. (They promised $150.) That's what the owner did for my hair. She was gregarious, although the workers seemed a very rushed. But I was happy with the results. Perhaps she forgot at the end or there was some miscommunication, but she ended up charging me $200. Including $18 tax and 20% tip was $260. It left a bad taste in my mouth. Not entirely their fault. I should have spoken up, but they may have lost a loyal customer as they seemed a bit all over. Not bad, but a few gaps along the way. I asked for Ms. Kang based on the recommendation here, and she was just as great as everybody said! I showed her the images I'd like my haircut, although the images I showed her was perm styles, and my hair is straight and I want to keep it straight. I told her I wanted that kind of style without perming. She made it happen! She was very fast and professional! She styled my hair with the straightening iron in the end to make it look wavy. I'm disappointed. I went to Hair Collage for my first brazilian keratin treatment because of the good reviews on here and the price ($150). There was indeed a language barrier (I think the woman who washed my hair knew 5 words in English: yes, no, please, hair, and ok) but we managed to communicate and the woman who did the actual straightening spoke more English. After the treatment, I was thrilled with my results, but within less than 2 weeks my hair started going back to its normal behavior (wavy and frizzy). I did everything right -- didn't wash it for 3 days, used the right shampoo, etc. -- so I don't know what happened. Even for this low a price, I expect better, and honestly I'd rather pay more and have it last 3+ months like it's supposed to. I won't be going back. read more

I've purchased a deal from Lifebooker from the keratin treatment for $120. My appointment just happened to be on Easter Sunday, so I was the only client in the salon. The stylist and her assistant (Gloria? I think) were awesome and super sweet. I have thick very curly hair and they took their time with the treatment until my hair was perfect. They go out of their way to make sure their customers are comfortable. As soon as I stepped into the salon, the assistant took my coat, offered me something to drink and magazines to read while my hair was being processed. Most of the salons in K-town have similar prices, but what sets Hair Collage apart from the numerous Korean salons on 32nd St is that they really go above and beyond for the customer and you really get your money's worth. The "won jang nim" (head stylist), Ms. Kang, as well as Ms. Choi, are super sweet and as a regular customer I've scored freebies on more than one occasion. Over the course of 10+ years of coming here (grew up in NJ), I've gotten many a haircut/dye/highiights/digital perm/setting perm/magic straight/Brazilian keratin treatment and can really attest to the skills of all the ladies who work here. Dropped in to Hair Collage being really desperate for a trim and reading the positive reviews on Yelp. Well, that is after i walked back and forth on 5th avenue several times being lost - the entrance is ON 32nd street, and is an elevator/stairs entrance. Well, the stairs are made for hobbits or something since they're the tiniest stairs I've ever been on. I nearly just fell and rolled all the way down. There wasn't any wait at all mid-afternoon on a Monday. I was a bit hesitant since I was immediately greeted by two women, and they seemed a bit toooo enthusiastic that I wanted a cut ("oh great, it's because they suck and have no business," my mind said). I was also afraid of a language barrier since I don't speak Korean. Nope. Choi spoke English and cut my hair with laser quick precision, with her scissors flying dangerously near my face. She didn't take too much off the ends so I could still grow my hair out, and gave it shape and volume instead of the gross scraggly mess it had grown into. My only gripe is that the place is a bit more "neighborhood relaxed" than professionally done. They had curling irons and straighteners just lying on the floor, all plugged into the same extension cord. Screamed "fire hazard!" Choi and her assistant also tried to blow dry my hair AT THE SAME TIME. Imagine: 2 women simultaneously shoving your head in opposite directions. That's never happened to me before, and it's not like there was a rush since there was only 1 other customer who was sitting with foils for highlights. It's been more than a month after the cut, and the cut has held its shape more than I can say for places I've gotten cuts. read more

I walked into this place at 5:45pm on Friday night for a Brazilian Keratin Treatment, I thought I made an appointment, but they didn't have me down. No problem- they took me right away! It was my first BK treatment, so I didn't really know what to expect- they washed my hair twice, blow dried it, and applied the treatment and left it in for about 30 mins. Then they blow dried my hair and flat ironed it. It took altogether about 2 hours. It looked great when I left, but I couldn't wash it for a few days. I just washed it this morning (Monday), and it literally took me 10 minutes to blow dry and it looked perfect! like i spend 40 minutes with a flat iron, but it feels softer!! i don't have very curly hair, but it's very frizzy and wavy, so this is amazing, i will definitely go back! plus, it's usually around $300 and it was only $150 here, great deal- everyone at the salon was super nice, and it's pretty well decorated (don't expect a 5 star salon, but it's nice and clean and airy) they offered me water and tea. read more

I recommend this place to ANYONE I come across that complains about the unmanageability of their hair. The brazilian keratin treatment I got here back in 2012 gave me the best 4 - 5 months of my life (This was obviously before I started wearing the hijab). The place was a little difficult to find amongst the many shops in Koreatown but they do have a sign slightly overhead, and a spiral staircase leading up to the main salon area. I had an appointment for 10am and the ladies began promptly. Everything went incredibly smoothly and I was out of there within two hours. I didn't wash or tie my hair for the next 3 days (including the day I went in for the treatment) as advised, and on the third day when I did wash it..holy crap..it was heaven. I let my naturally wavy/curly/thick/long hair air dry and it was GORGEOUS. It didn't leave it stick straight at all but it was just smooth and manageable and shiny..and nothing would ruin it. Not wind, not rain..nothing! I can't even express to you how much TIME this treatment saved me for those 4 - 5 months, which I really needed as I was doing a lot of travelling/working/going to college. If I didn't start covering my hair I'd have come here again numerous times. read more

Here on a business trip and needed a cut & color something awful. I selected this place due to the great reviews on here AND the fact that it was a block from where I was staying. Mrs. Kang did a great job!! That's her in the 2nd pic working on another stylist's hair. The salon is nice, pretty, spacious. I asked Mrs. Kang for a single process color & she matched my dark brown hair perfectly. I asked her not to cut too much length, and to shape up my style. Never got a chance to use it because I forgot about my appointment and they wouldn't reschedule when I called as soon as I remembered a few hours later. Apparently, the voucher fine print clearly states no shows forfeit what I paid. If they' re happy to let me forfeit that much cash without trying to work something out with me then I don't need to give them any future business. I would have paid full price since it was my fault; instead they hung up on me when I tried to see if there was anything I could do. I've known the owner for a very long time. My entire family goes to her and my mother has been getting her hair done from the owner for the last 25 years. I only for once a year to get a cut and just went a few weeks ago. I went in with hair down my back and decided to get a long bob. She did an excellent job with the cut and while getting the cut, we talked and decided to also color my hair. I wanted to color it but she suggested I get highlights since I'm very low maintenance. She mixed two colors to give me a copper brown color (my natural hair is black and I have olive skin). It looks natural and no bleaching necessary. I always come out with a great cut and style - she also blows out and irons your hair at the end to your liking which is a nice touch. Another HUGE perk- the shampoo girl was AMAZING AMAZING. Her alone is a great trip there. She massages, not just little circulating scalp movements but MASSAGES your entire scalp for minutes and feels amazing. Do not waste your time at this salon. I made appt and showed up on time. When to the front desk where there was a woman sending a text on her phone so I waited a minute or two.Nothing another few minutes nothing I finally said Hi.She sucked her teeth and said YES in a clearly annoyed tone like I was bothering her. I said am here for my 4:00 appt.She quickly ushered me to sit at a chair by the sink which was still wet! Am sitting there waiting while 3 other woman who clearly work there laugh and huddled in a corner clearly gossiping about something they were looking at out the window. At that point I just got up and left.There was not one single person at the salon that should have been my first clue this place sucked. Don't even bother with this place it's awful! read more
