Was recommended by a coworker for a hair cut, interesting dude. He was easily able to squeeze me in for a walk in appointment when called which was nice! The haircut itself isnt bad/ he has good skills and took his time for the haircut itself which I appreciated. But cut the hair a-lot shorter than what I wanted. I have been getting my hair straightened for decades and Bryan is the first guy that really knew what he was doing. American people in my opinion just can't seem to get this process down. Bryan was very knowledgeable, friendly and he explained everything. He has great products is fairly priced and the result is amazing. shiny, silky hair that doesn't frizzy. I have mixed feelings and perhaps should wait to post my review. I walked in hoping to get my split ends cut and I left feeling overwhelmed and somewhat depressed with the state of my hair. I only went in with the sole goal of cutting my ends, but he proceeded to tell me about the damage, hair loss, and stress I'm under. I visited Brian for the first time from Yelp and had a great first post-pandemic salon visit. Brian was kind and listened to my concerns with my hair and provided guidance. His salon is clean, he wears a mask, and sanitizes after every customer. The thing I love the most is that he books one customer at a time. Not only did this feel very safe, it saved a ton of time. I dread going to the salon for a cut and color that usually takes 4+ hours because stylists overbook and try to juggle many clients at a time. I was in and out of a Brian's chair in an hour and a half! Brian specializes in straight perm, but he did a great job with my simple cut and color. *BEWARE* - do NOT go here for a MEN'S HAIRCUT. Quick Summary: BAD at MEN'S haircuts, but seems to be good at WOMEN'S PERMS based on most of the reviews. Detailed Experience: Horrible experience. The worst haircut I have had in my entire life!! Because of the overall high average reviews (we made the mistake of not digging through the reviews), I walked in here for a haircut to give this place a shot. First impression: as you'll see intermittently through the reviews, Bryan can be ODD and VERY standoffish. I tried to explain the haircut I wanted. He seemed frustrated and dropped some insults about the current neglect of my hair, but proceeded to cut it anyway. Rather than taking 4in of the top (My hair was about 8-10in long on the top), he took off so much that there's only 2in remaining on top! I had asked him to take in the sides very close, but he ended up making the overall haircut like a ball (oddly poofy on the sides). The sides were uneven with loose longer hairs sticking out (noticed this at home). He didn't even give me the courtesy of cleaning up the edges of my hair or tend to my sideburns. At the end of the haircut, he didn't even ask if I wanted gel (I think he knew it was a disaster). He just slapped gel on my hair and repeatedly said "you're done." It's not like he shop was busy either.. this was a weekday and the saloon was a ghost town. Anyway, he didn't show me angles of my hair using a mirror or even show me the rear of the hair. My wife, who was attending to our energetic 2yo, just said it looked fine on quick inspection, so, confused, I just let it go. But she was horrified when I got home, took a shower, and took a close look at it. Because the haircut was so horrific (all of my family commented negatively on it), I ended up going to my wife's stylist several days later and she managed to salvage the haircut and turn it into something that looks pretty great (and a style I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise). So in an odd way, I have to thank Bryan for the horrific haircut. If not for him, I wouldn't have this new hairstyle that seems to be a very nice change. If you take the time and read through the reviews, there are multiple reviews talking about Bryan's short and unfriendly personalty as well as multiple bad experiences peppered in. I'm Asian with thick, frizzy wavy hair and lots of it. People are always surprised by just how much hair I have, especially hair stylists! I think most stylists think I'm over exaggerating when I call in to let them know my hair type, amount and length until they actually see it in person haha. So take that into consideration for the length of my treatment time. Ever since I cut my hair shoulder length with bangs, it has been like a wild animal on my head. When my hair was longer, I guess the length had been weighing some of the craziness down and cutting it caused it to poof up and be over voluminous in a bad way. I got the Magic Hair Straightening Treatment and, wow, Bryan is a Hair Magician that has tamed the beast! He really took his time working on my hair and asked questions to understand my hair/scalp condition and history. He only takes one client at a time for this process so you don't have to worry about a hairstylist who's attention is scattered between multiple clients. He's super chill and accommodating! We chatted about food, restaurants, health and his other business. Also, I was playing a game on my phone and he gave me a pillow/cushion/thing (?) to rest my hands one which made it so much more comfortable! Although it probably also helps to keep the clients' head level haha. Summer is his busiest season so make an appointment at least a few days beforehand. The whole process took about 3 hours and is very reasonably priced! Prepare yourself with some dry shampoo because you'll be advised not to wash your hair for a couple of days. Also no hair tying/pins/etc for a week afterward so make sure to take your schedule for the following week into consideration! There will also be a chemical scent for about a week or so. For someone as low maintenance (cough didn't own a blow dryer and hair brush until a few months ago cough), it's such a time and stress saver. Wash my hair and I'm out the door! No frizz control products needed and I look so much more polished than when I make an effort to look polished. Two weeks in and loving it more and more! One thing I'd do next time though is to get a setting perm as well so that the ends curl in for a more natural daily look. I came to Hair Sense for Japanese straightening today and I'm super impressed by my experience! First of all, I called to make an appointment without too much advance notice and Bryan was able to take me on the day of my choice. I also have a crazy amount of hair that hair stylists usually complain about but Bryan tamed it all for me. The whole procedure took ~4 hours and he didn't take any other customers while he was working with me. I was tired by the end even though I was sitting in a chair 100% of the time so I can't imagine how Bryan managed it! Bryan is really fun to talk to, though, and he made the hours pass by quickly! Updated review: i have had my hair straightened here three times now. I was so happy to find a place that can get it done in less than 2 hours as I am from out of town. Today I decided to also ask for a hair trim and it was the worst mistake. Never in my life have I been so disappointed in a hair cut. I asked for 3-4 inches and he cut off 8 inches. I asked for a layered end "v shaped" cut and he refused and stated it would not look good on me but ensured me my ends won't have straight edges. And of course when he was done chopping off all of my length my hair was not only super short, the ends were coarse and it looked chopped. He didn't even ask if I liked it and removed the cover and walked away. When I asked if he could make my ends look more natural and layered he got really upset and grabbed his shears and started edward scissorhands style shredding all my hair off. Now I have ZERO volume, my hair is way shorter than I wanted and of course when I asked for bangs he did ONE chop and didn't layer or anything, I'm not kidding. This guy is a psychopath and I would not recommend anyone come here unless you want your hair ruined. I will never be back. read more

DO NOT GO THERE! The worst hair salon I have ever been to. Bryan did a so called "Japanese hair straightening" on my hair a week ago. He promised my hair gonna be straight like using a flat iron so I agreed to pay 400 dollars flat (no extra charges). I've sat in his salon for more then 5 hours and was hoping and praying that my hair gonna look amazing as he described. When I wanted to pay for the service Bryan tried to sell me few hair products for an extra 60$, I agreed and gave him my debit card. Then he asked me what about a tip and said I HAVE TO pay him an extra 60$ tip. REALLY???? So I paid it and didn't take the products, he said I can buy the products myself as long as its organic and so I did. He also gave me a free (cheap) hair spray if I would write a good review on Yelp ( now you know where all the good reviews came from) 3 days after the treatment I washed my hair, used all of the products that Bryan told me to use and surprise surprise my hair looks like he never touched it, the same wavy hair that I've had before. I cant even explain how disappointed I was. So I went to see Bryan at the hair salon and asked him what happened to my hair? I paid 460$ so it can be straight!!!! He smiled and said I should have bought his products and if I want I can wait and he gonna wash my hair again and use his products. REALLY???? Anyway, I asked for my money back or some kind of a refund and he said "NO! You can wait and I will wash your hair". OK whatever. Dear Bryan, here is a REAL review, not a bought one. I am feeling both surprised and happy that Bryan decided to send a public comment to my review of his service today, which is more than a month since I'd written the review and months after my most recent patronage. He sent me a private message immediately after the review was posted, whining about his family problem and justifying his actions. I wasn't about to engage in a foolish bickering with him. It's been awhile since I felt the need to write a review, but I felt that my trip to Hair Sense was worth sharing. Quick backstory: Few months back, I got a magic straight (Japanese thermal treatment) from another salon (from there for the first time). Service was OK, but let's just say I will never go back there again nor recommend to anyone. The price somehow jumped up $100 for my "stubborn" hair and for using two different chemicals because first one "did not work well enough" - which she never confirmed with me if that was going to be OK and whether I wanted to sit there for 2 additional hours. My hair treatment lasted maybe for two months max and was unevenly done - these treatments are supposed to be permanent so you only treat the part that grew out from previous treatment. Having had my hair treated at least once a year for the past 15+ years, I know exactly how my hair will turn out while sitting in the salon chair. And I knew this was not going to be that great. Back to my experience at Hair Sense. I was a little hesitant to try another new place without any recommendations, but I was desperate so I turned to Yelp for help and decided to give this place a try. And yes - Bryan asked a lot of questions, but they were all related to my hair and how to take care of it after the treatment. And unlike most places I've been to, he never pushed to sell "his products" from his inventory but gave me general recommendations and where to find them. Another thing that was different from ALL the places I've gone to over the years was that he did not use gloves. I've never seen anyone NOT use gloves because these are kinda harsh chemicals. If you've never gotten these treatments before, I can tell you that I struggle every single time with the strong chemical smell as it stings your nose and eyes just by its scent. However, his product did not have a strong smell and smelled more like a hair product than chemical. That was another plus. To top it off, he blocked out his schedule for the duration of my treatment and refused another walk-in customer (requested her to come back after my hair appt was done). This was unheard of - I have never had a hairdresser that spent the entire time dedicated to my hair. This may just be a one-time thing, but it saved me over an hour of just sitting and waiting for the hairdresser to become available between treatment stages. Either my expectations were really low after my bad experience or Bryan did an exceptional job, I guess I won't know until next several visits. All I can say is that Bryan definitely impressed me with his knowledge and expertise. And maybe he tends to ask a lot of questions about your hair - but from my conversations with him, I could tell he is very passionate about hair & treating /caring for it properly. And when you're very passionate about something, you preach. I don't necessarily see that as a negative in this case, I learned some things I was not aware of about my hair from this visit. I am very pleased with the results and am happy to say that I have found my new favorite place for a magic straight perm. read more

I have thick, unruly Asian hair, so I find it very difficult to trust new hairstylists w/ my crazy mane. I have been constantly getting all sorts of perms (curly, straight relaxers, Japanese "Magic" straight, and Keratin straight) since the 8th grade, so after trying it all for years, I'm a little pickier and more attuned to my hair needs. I've kept going back to my stylist in California because I have had a hard time finding a decent stylist elsewhere. However, the fact that Bryan of Hair Sense used to work at Kim Sun Young in NY (the same salon chain I used to go to in L.A.) was very reassuring to me. Thanks to other Yelpers, I decided to give Bryan a try. I was a little nervous, especially since it is just two months before my wedding (I have nightmares of all my hair falling out after a perm). Bryan took me as a walk-in without an appt, and offered me a very reasonable price for my cut + Japanese straight perm. I'll admit that I was apprehensive at first because a.) he cuts hair dry, which I'm not used to (usually my trims are w/ wet hair), and b.) he kept insisting that I must have recently dyed my hair (which I told him I haven't done since high school nearly 15 years ago). Aside from that initially awkward mini-argument, Bryan turned out to be fantastic! He was serious, but very thorough and professional. He even was sweet enough to give me a trial of hair product, and he downloaded his Korean song playlist onto my phone for me! Now, one month after my visit, I am still thrilled with the results of my perm. I give the experience 4.5 stars, with just half a star off because a.) I prefer wet-haircuts, although his dry cut was definitely decent, and b.) the texture of my hair is just slightly less soft/straight/shiny than I'm used to after my straight perms. My hair was getting out of control with split ends and it was just growing out of shape (my hair was half wavy half straight because I needed another perm). The salon wasn't busy when I went, so I got my hair washed and then Bryan cut my hair right away. I'm no hairstylist but his slicing and layering technique looked pretty good to me. When he was done styling...I was like...OMG!!! My hair was so pretty!!! My head feels so much lighter and my hair wasn't going everywhere. It's got volume but it still feels light.
