After bouncing around between a couple of places at the start of my Houston journey, it was recommended to me by multiple people to see Danny at Star Hair Salon. It's been close to a year and I haven't looked back since. When I first came to Star, the price was $6 across all stylists, while Danny charged a flat $7. There are people that come in and out of this place, but the majority of them are here for Danny. I've seen him cut a whole plethora of folks, but the reason I appreciate him is because he knows how to handle Asian hair (#1). It's not uncommon for him to have a wait of 3-8 people at any given time. Fast forward to current times, Danny now charges $10 flat. All other stylists are at $9 (#2) and it's cash only. Danny is also the only hair stylist I've ever seen that has "911" as option on his menu, which is a $40 emergency for anyone who needs to skip the line for whatever reason. Other feeds include $30 for coloring, $3 for beard trimming, and $3 for shampoo. Also, do not use the restroom. Hold it and go to the restaurant next door. Just trust me. Ultimately, Danny has been good about giving me a proper fade with crisp lines and helping me manage my cowlicks. He's always been incredibly friendly and funny and is well connected in the community. And most of us at some point in our lives take on the role ourselves without any training. Just trial and error. So yeah, paying $135 for a "fabulous cut" by someone named Fabio just don't sit right with this Yelper. I saw Jando's review of this place. And liking the cut of his jib I decided to come here since I was in town on a Sunday and sadly Mike's ain't open on Sundays. First off - inflation is a b*tch. And it would seem in the last 10 months since his review the price of even the non-Danny tier 2 cutters is now $11.99. That's a 33% increase. But I'm glad they actually changed the sign to notify folks in advance. I was there. In the moment. So I went for it. Not crowded at 9:30 am on Sunday. Glad they were actually opened because, despite the sign saying 9 am open time, I did have my doubts this being a Sunday morning. The woman in the far right hand corner upon entering beckoned me to come to her chair. Like a siren beckoning a sailor to their demise. I was hesitant at first. But I like older folks more than the younger ones, and she was definitely grandma age, so I gladly walked over. Took a seat and 5 minutes later I was out of there. I have now styled my hair after his coloring....AMAZING! I have gone to two highly recommended natural hair stylists and was disappointed with the coloring (and out of over $100 both times). I said I'd try Kevin based on a friend. I chose to do the consultation (I recommend it). We talked about what I was looking for in color. He showed me some light colors that had me a bit concerned (being honest). But, it's hair...I live on the edge and went with his explanation that it wouldn't come out that light. I came for my appointment, reiterated the vibe I was going for: noticeable lighter brown with some depth, but nothing too drastic and odd. He took that and ran with it. I had no clue what he was doing while coloring, but he took my 'vision' and threw on a couple of colors to get this AWESOME look! Here's my color! Hair feels fine; no dryness, no breakage so far (and no bleaching). I have no problem paying big bucks for color as long as it's GOOD! This was money well spent. However, the extreme low cost combined with the bars on the windows and the dilapidated exterior of these salons kept me apprehensive and away for a while. In a small strip mall under high voltage power lines nestled in between Good Times Beer Liquor Wine and Corona Nite Club, I found this gem, Hair by Johnny aka Great Hair Cuts. I entered a barred glass door and was greeted by a Vietnamese couple. On the walls were pictures of different fades on gentlemen all with stoic faces. Initially, it was intimidating and I contemplated walking out. However, I mustered up that courage again and took a seat. Glancing around, I noticed the interior looked old but it was clean. YOU WANT A HAIRCUT? I said yes, told Johnny how I wanted my hair, and he started cutting it. He wasn't one for chit-chat but did spend almost a half hour doing a great job on my hair. I was impressed! THAT WILL BE $5. I matched his $5 request with a $5 tip. The work he did is worth a lot more than what he is charging. My wife also loved my haircut and she tells it like it is. I returned a month later and this time I got Linda. She wasn't as thorough as Johnny, partly because they got a surge of customers, but she also did a fantastic job. My wife gave that haircut her seal of approval too. So give them a try. They are both talented hairstylists!
