The sushi is great and I would recommend this to anyone. Dog friendly, Hakane Sushi has a wide, varied menu selection that was much to my taste from spicy, sweet, and savory! I'm not a fan of seaweed so I got soy paper. The paper is yellow but don't let that fool you! You won't even know it's there! The service was very fast, I would recommend the Rainbow Roll for it had several varied fish types, crab and avocado! I also ordered water for my dog, and it was here in seconds. Enjoyed the food! The service and atmosphere was by far the high point for me. My family and I went for my 18th birthday and sat at the bar. We placed order after order to try multiple things. If I could give zero stars for this restaurant I would, where do I start..... When we were first seated, I found myself swatting flies away from the table. I also noticed the back door was left open, I guess to keep the place cool. I'm not sure if they have air conditioning or not but it was rather warm. I wondered how they keep rodents out with the door open...I SHOULD HAVE LEFT WITH THAT THOUGHT. Next, I placed my order ,the Sushi Dinner which came with Ten pieces of Sushi. I asked the server ( a young man) what Sushi came with this dinner...he said it was "Chiefs Choice". I told him I really liked salmon and tuna. Now, I didn't expect all salmon and tuna but good customer service would be to give the customer more of what they prefer which they DID NOT. When my dinner came it only had 6 pieces ( remember it was suppose to be 10 pieces). I asked a waitress ( who was not our server) and she told the Sushi Chief..I should mention the waitress was very polite. When the waiter brought my other 4 pieces it was fish I was not familiar with ( no tuna or salmon). After I received the plate, I noticed the waiter and the chief smirking...WOW. My visit to this restaurant ended with a trip to the rest room where I noticed a sign that said to only flush toilet seat covers but to place toilet paper and other "un-mentionables "in the trash...again, WOW. My husband ordered a beer, which he said was not cold and the water that my daughter and I ordered had an odd taste. In fact, my daughter went out to the car to get her own water. I'll close this review by saying that this restaurant was also OVER PRICED considering the total lack of good customer service, air conditioning and decent plumbing. read more

What an usual place and I mean that in a good way. Island decor and sweet Hawaiian music in a Japanese restaurant! I had a pork Katsu rice bowl. It had lots veggies on top which I've never seen before. It was good eats. My husband had tempera udon. The tempera was crisp not greasy and generously portioned. The broth was flavorful. Been here a couple of time in the last month. Great sushi and decent pricing. Ate the chef's choice ten piece sushi dinner and it was great. Also had the vegetable tempura roll. Excellent! I've been to Sugar Fish and Go's Mart and this place is every bit as good. Go's Mart has a lot more exotic choices, but the quality is similar and a fraction of the price. We were seated quickly, ordered quickly, and proceeded to wait over 25 minutes for our soup and salad, much less our main meal. We waited there so long that the 2 tables next to us received their food, finished their food, ordered dessert, paid their bill, hugged goodbye, left, and new parties were seated. By that point, we still hadn't received our salad. We got our soup by flagging down another server (go us!), but then one of the soups was wrong and the other was cold (boo us!). Then we had to flag down the owner for our salad, which still never came. It was frustrating to see our waiter deliver the new customers (both sets of them) their hot soup and appetizers before we even got our food. He simply forgot everything about our order and now I know what it feels like to be invisible. It's sad, guys, being invisible. The last straw was when my husband found a piece of plastic in his soup. The server apologized and offered to replace the large bowl of soup. Since my husband was halfway done with soup, he knew he couldn't finish another bowl and declined the offer. Our server just said ok and took it away, no other compensation or apology. Bottom line: We had to remind the server for every part of our order. It took us a lot of work to get food here and we didn't even get paid for our time. I won't be returning - I can grow rice and learn how to make sushi by the time food is served here. read more

It breaks my heart to say this, but even though I'm giving Hakane Sushi three stars out of five, going there makes my wallet thin -- and my stomach is growling as soon as I leave. It's true. Hakane Sushi makes very good sushi. The service is terrific and the rolls are delicious, but the portions are very tiny for their $10.50-$12.50 rolls. In my opinion, you're not getting enough for what you're paying for. The rolls (their specialty) are served in the same way as appetizers -- and you're waiting for the main entree to come, but it never comes. It's heartbreaking: to find a great sushi restaurant in Ojai only to find all the tables empty at lunch and dinner because people can't afford it. read more

My sister goes to Villanova Prep School and I was visiting her when we decided to go to Hakane to grab some lunch since it was the new sushi bar in town. First off, the inside was nicely decorated and the restrooms were clean. The waiters were friendly and the service was good. I felt that the House Special Rolls were a bit pricey but they are GOOD! They also offered sashimi, a particular favorite of mine. They also offered a la carte dishes, some noodle dishes and lunch specials. My sister ordered a Dragon Roll and I got some yellowtail sushi and Rainbow Roll. I also got a small sapporo beer. All the food tasted great and my sister loved the Dragon Roll. As far as service, it was good but not great. Our server was friendly but she seemed lost at times because she was new (I figured it was acceptable since this restaurant just opened). The Japanese sushi chefs were nice as expected and made sure to greet you and say goodbye and thank you. The overall experience was excellent and I give Hakane two thumbs up. YUM, we have a potential great sushi place in Ojai and I'm sure I'll stop by here more often whenever I'm in town! read more

First things first. The price of sushi up here in Ojai is considerably pricier and it's something I've come to terms with it considering the limited options for Japanese cuisine in this tiny city. There is a huge improvement in the quality of their sushi the past couple of months. Like, REALLY mouth-watering good sushi, with soft chewy rice. So I hope this keeps up. My only gripe with Hakane is that the service is not consistent. One particular busy evening, I ordered my food for pick up and had a server make me wait for 30 more minutes and give me an attitude when I followed up on my order. read more

The staff was wonderful, the sushi was incredibly tasty with huge portions, and they even sung happy birthday to him and brought out a complimentary dessert. I would absolutely suggest eating here!!! 5 stars for the sushi, but nothing kills a great meal like an allergic reaction with zero warning. Some folks have deathly peanut allergies, luckily for me it's usually just horrible nausea and hives until I find an antihistamine. Today it entailed an extremely painful drive home while struggling not to throw up my expensive meal. [EDIT: Threw up my expensive meal] Man, did it ruin my dinner. Never heard of anyone putting peanuts near mochi, but my waitress did. Told her I was having a reaction, that I was severely allergic, got an "oh, we will try to be more clear". More clear? As in.. no warning? Was really surprised to not receive any discount considering. Not good service. To be honest they're asking for a lawsuit if that's how they handle common food allergies. The service was wonderful. We asked for a dessert sample plate which they don't have on the menu and they made it for us. It was amazing. We just moved to town and were excited to find a local sushi restaurant that we loved as much as the one we used to frequent. We went to one a couple of weeks ago and thought that we might just be out of luck. Then we decided to try Hakane. Am I ever glad that we did! We had a couple of rolls and the sushi sampler. All were absolutely amazing! We had the rainbow roll and the aloha roll. The aloha roll was different from anything that I had ever had before. Really nice sauce. But the sushi sampler...perfection! After we told our waiter how much we enjoyed one particular piece on the sampler, he recommended the salmon with lemon pepper. I am sitting here still thinking about it! This tells me he either doesn't know what he's doing or that the new Hakane Management / Owners are too cheap to put more waiters and waitress' to work to handle a dinner shift. Or that they don't know what their doing expecting one Waiter to handle the whole house. I ordered one roll and asked the waiter to leave the menu at the table as I may be wanting more. This was an indication that I wanted more food. He left me and my kid hanging for thirty minutes. Not OK. After an amazing hike in the Ojai mountains, my boyfriend took me to one of his favorite Sushi Bars, but as we were walking in, he said, "wow, this looks different and updated!" Let me address the rat review - this place is right next to a golf course - Field mice, which loot like rats in mice bodies are prevalent - it's unfortunate one was seen, as this place is super clean. I have loved almost all of the rolls i have tried and they will make whatever you want - like a custom yellow tail roll - they always have a suggestion. Fresh yummy fish at a reasonable price - glad they are there. I have not tried cooked or fried foods here - so that quality is unknown - but i go for raw fish and I love it here. read more

If you want better sushi though and have the time/energy to drive down to ventura, that might be a better option for you, but we were just lazy and wanted food asap. This restaurant has a dog friendly patio, which was perfect for our little poodle, but there seems to be lots of flies in ojai, so that was a little bothersome. I have waited way too long to give these people what they deserve. We went to this restaurant for the first time to celebrate our friend's B Day and they treated us right. It was a lunch time on the weekend and it was quiet. Very friendly and nice staff, the chef was a Korean husband and his wife was Japanese. They were both so nice. We had a nice conversation with her in Japanese since we were also born and raised there. Quality of Sushi was good and they even gave B D girl a beautiful dish as a gift. It's a drive from Santa Clarita but we had a great time and would like to go back when we are in the area again. There were interesting arts that the chef made all over the restaurant and Hawaiian music was unique in sushi place. Loved that there was no TV or loud rock'n roll music on : ). read more

This is a hidden gem in Ojai and away from the usual tourist traps, the place has patio and the food are scrumptious and presented well, the owner Jay is very nice and the staff.
