Hakky is located in Fair Oaks Mall on the lower level in the side of Fair Oaks where Cheesecake Factory is located. I found Hakky using Yelp - although finding it the first time was hard - I got Yelp to correct the address. The previous address led one to a non-existent spot along U.S. 50 Westbound just past the intersection with West Ox Road! I brought in a pair of 20 year old or so Merrell hiking boots. Last winter during the massive snowstorms, the heel began to peel away from the bottom of the boot. The gentleman working at Hakky advised me he could not guarantee the repair as all he could do was apply some adhesive to the boot. So for $18.00 (paid up front) I thought what the hell - I'll spring for $18.00 and see if it fixes the problem. If not, I will say goodbye to a pair of work horse hiking boots! He told me to come back the next day and they would be ready. I picked them up a couple of weeks ago - so far they look good. Abhorrent craftsmanship. I brought in a pair of walnut (medium brown)-colored wingtips to be re-soled. What I got was a new heel that is a very light tan. It looks terrible especially since I just wanted the shoes to be resoled. I asked for a different color heel and the two men working said they could only do black (no brown at all). They also got dark shoe polish all over on toe. The upshot is probably a ruined pair of $400 shoes. I wish I had heeded previous negative reviews. My favorite flats are Tahari and I really wore them out. They have been discontinued. I was ready to throw them out but couldn't part with them. My trusty Danner boots needed an new sole a few months ago so I found Hakky in the mall. These are my favorite boots and they've been around since the early 90s. They have been resoled four times so I knew exactly what 'right' would like when I popped in to Hakky for an estimate. I was greeted in a professional and friendly manner as soon as I walked in. I left my boots for a week and when I picked them up they were as good as new! These folks are wonderful craftsman and I'll gladly return. read more

I've been to this place many times and I've finally had it -- I won't be going back anymore. Years ago I found the employees to be friendly and they did good work. But lately I've had a terrible language barrier with some of the people working there. Specifically, I keep encountering the same middle-aged guy who hardly speaks any English and is quite unfriendly. I'm sorry to bring up the fact that someone doesn't speak English, but it's true, and I'm pretty particular, so being able to effectively communicate exactly what I want is important to me. Last summer the leather-ish insoles of my espadrilles were coming detached and needed to be glued down. The guy said he couldn't fix it (well, sort of. He didn't say much of anything, but my shoes were returned to me un-repaired, and I inferred from his attempted communication that their glue wouldn't sufficiently affix the material to the insole). Meanwhile, I went home, bought some crazy glue, and fixed them myself. Most recently, I dropped off a pair of wedge boots that were very scuffed up and asked that they be polished. The guy told me to come back in half-an-hour (granted, it's nice that they do some repairs while-you-wait). I was charged $5, which I think is a reasonable price for a shoe-shine, but they only polished the front/tips of the boots. The heel/back part (both the actual wooden heel of the boot and the leather part of the boot that's above the heel) were completely untouched and still majorly scuffed. I didn't feel like trying to talk to the guy and explain that I wanted THE WHOLE boot polished, not just the toe area, so I just left with my half-polished shoes and vowed (silently) never to return. read more

These guys are great, fast and helpful. They give you honest opinions on repairs versus just trying to take your money if your shoes don't need it or beyond repair. Since I have started using them I have been back for everything from repairs, polishing and adding extra belt holes. read more

Hit or miss depending on which person you get. They can change soles on shoes with expected skills. In one instance the gentleman at the counter overheard my conversation about a scuff on my leather jacket and he offered to fix it. I didn't think it could be fixed but he did a great job. Another time, I bring in a scuffed shoe (comparable damage to the jacket), and the guy says the don't do it. I ask him for suggestions, referring to the various products and polish the sell. He won't even look at me at this point as he moves to the back of the shop and says "I have no idea." Come on. This place has been there at least twenty years and you have no institutional knowledge in the shop? We didn't even get to my questions about polish and care for a new pair of shoes I just bought (fairly rich, interesting color). So no sale there cause he walked off. Anyway, it probably all depends on which guy you get. The one guy was good. As I need some consistency and it's a drive, I'll probably be looking elsewhere for shoe care. read more

The zipper on the cushion from my leather couch busted. I brought it to Hakky's based on my mom's recommendation. Still, I read all the reviews and was a bit more than apprehensive, but still went because I was a bit despondent. Firstly, the young man that works there couldn't have been nicer and more professional. He took his time working with the zipper to see exactly what the issue was and to see if they could even fix it. He slowly worked the zipper down as to not damage the leather or the stuffing, took some pliers, and fixed it. Further, he didn't even charge me. There is a huge language barrier. They took my heels and hammered out the heel to see if they could fix them. It turns out they couldn't fix my heels, but I feel like the hammering did additional damage. I tried to explain that to the repair man, but he pointed his finger at me and called me a liar. I emphasized that I wasn't trying to blame him, that I wasn't angry, that I didn't want anything. He kept on accusing me of lying... I got really frustrated because I don't think he understood what I was trying to communicate- which was basically, that I understand my shoes can't be fixed and I initially thought that the hammering caused additional damage, but that now i see it doesn't even matter, since they cant be fixed anyway. read more

Horrifying service. This business is in the dark ages. No system in place to track down shoes if a ticket is lost. This is a common mistake that many customers make. They should keep a system where the shoes are tracked based on the name of the customers, their address, or any other number of accessible information. They are competing with other businesses that have MUCH better customer service. They told my husband "no ticket, no shoe." Well, now they will get no business from us. I ran through some rain and surprisingly my favorite leather shoes of 5 years were damaged. The rubber soles (both shoes) developed splits and I was about to throw them away when a friend suggested having them repaired. Hakky re-soled with leather, replaced the heels and treated the tops to look as good as possible. Left with a smile on my face and happy feet again!! For the last three weekends I have been driving from Springfield to Fairfax to take my shoes to Hakky. I have been very impressed with the quality of their workmanship and their timeliness in getting my shoes done. However, on Saturday when I went to pick up two pairs of shoes that I had dropped off the previous Saturday, I found that my shoes were not bagged in the clear plastic bag that I had become accustomed to. They were scattered on a shelf where he immediately found 3 shoes, not the 4 that I dropped off. I waited patiently while the gentleman looked for it and was apologized to as he only worked during the weekend and told the manager would call me on Monday to let me know if he found the other mate. I spoke to Peter today (Tuesday) and he told me that the mate to my discontinued Gentle Souls shoe was indeed lost. I can not replace them and the original cost was around $200. When he found out how much the shoe was he just started laughing and said that they normally provide 50% of the cost. Grant it, the shoe is several years old, but it is one of my favorites and I can't just run out and replace it. I don't know if this is a freak accident or not, but unless we work out some type of agreement I will not be bringing any shoes back to Hakky. They do great work, but I am not willing to take another chance at losing a pair of good shoes that I love. read more

Looks like pretty good work. However the heels they put on my oxford shoes leave black marks on wood floors. I called and asked if they have material that doesn't do it, they said no, that all rubber marks floors. This is bullsh-t, of course. When I said that Vibram heels don't mark wood floors, which is my experience, he said, anyway, they don't have them. Also, it's really f---ing expensive, compared to Astoria, NY, for example. I've tried to have leather shoe boots repaired 2x at Hakky in Fair Oaks mall recently and both times I was turned away. The older Asian gentleman at the desk is not particularly friendly or helpful; he offers no alternatives other than he can't do the repair. The first pair I brought in was about 10 years old and worn, so I accepted that the small hole in the leather that had developed could not be fixed. The second pair was brand new and I accidentally scratched the top of one of the shoe boots. I found it hard to believe that there wasn't a way to polish it so it would look better. I was told "no" as soon as I asked if anything could be done and "no" when I asked if they could recommend any alternatives. The very next shoe repair place I tried said they could fix it at minimal cost. I will not be going back to Hakky again. read more

I've taken 3 or 4 pairs of shoes to be repaired. One pair of leather flats was worn away on the sole and part of the pointy toe. They were only a few months old. He put a new sole on the bottom and made the pointy part of the shoe look like new again. He also repaired my old leather riding boots that were starting to look 'old'. Not too bad of a place. I fixed the heels on a pair of work heels and he charged me $13 for he first pair because it was a thicker heel. The second round I brought two pairs of thinner heels to be replaced and he charged me $5 per shoe, so $20 total. Not bad at all. It's my go-to for shoe repairs now. read more

I have been coming here for years. The prices have always seemed high--$50 to resole shoes?--but it's super-convenient. I was surprised last time I came that you now have to pay in advance (formerly you just made a deposit). Now I wonder if this new policy is because the quality of their work has deteriorated and unhappy customers were refusing to pay when they saw the work. I would have done that today when I saw that a pair of leather flip flops that I was picking up had been ruined instead of repaired--the toe strap was made much higher on one foot, so the shoe will flap on my foot now. I pointed this out to the man behind the counter, and he told me that it would have been too difficult to fix them properly. So instead he ruined them for $15. I wish that he had told me before I dropped them off and pre-paid that he couldn't fix them. I will never return to this place. read more
