Wow! What a great little spot to find some authentic ingredients and spices! Well organized, bright and inviting. Super friendly and informative staff. Fresh produce and freezer items are towards the back. There's small appliances and clothing apart from grocery items. I found what I've been looking for. They had the famous Dubai chocolate bars too! Really neat spot to find unique items and ingredients you can't find at regular grocery stores. Will definitely be a favorite. read more

One of the things I like about Riverside is the ethnic diversity and especially the markets where one can find rare spices, vegetables and cuts of meat. Hala market caters to the Middle Eastern community and is a great source for reasonably priced food. My last few trips here have yielded some delicious ingredients for memorable meals, especially the chicken and beef kabob seasoning packets. Follow instructions and be blown away by the results! Another favorite item is the cans of dolmas (grape leaves). They carry a few brands in standard sized tins and mega-huge cans. We found that not all brands are equal and have a preference but it's still a convenient place to shop. I haven't bought anything from the meat department so I cannot say go for it or not. Regardless, this is my go-to when certain spices get low. read more

Not a great place, very little to choose from, seemed very run down. The worst part was that I was not acknowledged or spoken to, there was one customer ahead of me and they were having a personal conversation with the cashier, I politely waited but no one would say anything to me. After 20 minutes I gave up. I drove a long way to get to this market only to be snubbed. I set my items down and left. They didn't care that a customer had just left either. I won't try it again, I'll drive to town first before that. read more

A neat little shop. Lots of spices, nuts, and canned goods. You can get cardamom, pitas, tahini, even Vimto here ($7 or $8 for a 24 pack) as well as teas, biscuits, puff pastry, various cheeses. The gentleman behind the counter was polite and helped me find what I needed. Not much in the way of produce, it's a very small shop. I liked it here, but I had to take stars off: unfortunately, the refrigerator smelled kind of rotten and sour when I opened it to get items out... sort of a spoiled milk smell put together with garbage smell. Most of the hummus containers in the refrigerated section had a "sell by" date nearly a month ago. Yuck. The Eve's Kitchen brand was ok though. The fresh ginger root in the produce area was very dried up and wrinkly... no good anymore. read more

I've been going here for all of my Middle Eastern food needs for almost 20 years. The latest thing that I have caught onto is their kefta where they make the ground beef and parsley and onion and spices into the mixture for you and all you have to do is add salt when you get home. Their small but fresh butcher area is always well stocked. I've recommended so many people to go here and they all love it. read more

Usually I am a fan of this place since it's the only halal store in the area and I respect such establishments. But selling chicken meat that has gone bad is too bad a mistake to make. I bought a lot of meat from them and it had been sitting out from the previous day in a white box and when I got home it smelled very bad and had started rotting. I'm sorry but bad chicken is so dangerous and they need to handle it better. It made me and my friends sick but thankfully we're fine now and I threw away most of it. Unfortunately I'll stick to normal grocery store meat and only go for spices and packaged goods from Hala. read more

Going to be honest here. The pita here is amazing, you can get a bag of 6 for 80 cents!! Pita elsewhere can cost you up to a dollar per pita! The price of the pita bread is worth 5 stars alone. They have several varieties of pita bread which i have yet to consume. I will also mention that this place seems a little...dirty from a glance. Been coming here over 12 years, but service nowadays sucks. Owner is still the same good guy, but the workers cutting meat are juvenile. Took 15 minutes to get 5 lbs Lamb and 3 lbs goat. Extremely slow service. When I asked the kid to cut the Lamb in "small" pieces, I got pieces about 3" big. Same thing happened last week with Lamb shanks, when I corrected him, he responded that it's the smallest he can go. Funny how other butchers can make pieces smaller. My problem, if you're selling a product that overpriced $4.99/lb (versus $2.99/lb in Anaheim, same brand), then I at least expect better service to come along with that. To the owner: I'm sorry to have been an inconvenience to these kids, if they don't want to perform their job properly, that's fine. You keep them, but I'll be going somewhere else. Best coffee beans around, well-priced, and they'll grind it Turkish-style for free. The butchery is my favorite in the area. Cheapest chicken around (99 cents a pound for drumsticks or leg quarters, $1.19 per pound for a whole hen), awesome quality, and it's halal. The ground beef is a treat, such high quality, and extra clean. They've got any and every Mediterranean ingredient you'd ever want...Arabic Bread for 75 cents! Best prices for tahini, dairy, and spices, too. The produce isn't always the freshest, but their prices are always excellent. On top of all this, kind and courteous customer service. One of my favorite businesses in all of Riverside. read more

I went and bought Turkish loose leaf tea. I got outside and decided to look at the expiration date. It said BEST BEFORE 10/2015. It was 10/2016!! I went back in and talked with the owner. He said all the tea has same date, but it's only best before. I said it's a year old and I want my money back. He put the tea BACK ON THE SHELF to keep selling!! I was appalled! I got my money back and returned home to look at another bag of tea from same market that I have been drinking, but was very bitter. Sure enough...BEST BEFORE 10/2015. Although I love this place much better then the market of Day st....Here is why I give it a 3 star! One day I came in and the Hispanic man whom handles the raw meat totally had poor food handling skills! I ordered kafta and he was mixing all the stuff together and with his hand which was all over the raw ground beef he stuck his hand in the huge jug of kafta spices! Uhmmmmm talk about contamination! Lady time I bought meat from the! Cause if he doesn't know any better then what would make me think they're handling anything correctly! Age that indecent I didn't go for 1 year. Now I go once in a blue moon just got canned stuff and Arabic bread! IE I don't care for the cashier man he seemed a bit rude! So if the owner reads this maybe you should have some small talk about food handling with the Hispanic man! That's if you even know well enough about food safety! DISGUSTINNNNNNG!
