Welcome to Halal Gyro Express, the restaurant that makes big promises, then under-delivers. HGE is close to my new(ish) job. Seeing that they offered falafel, I decided to check them out a couple times for lunch, ordering falafel in the two forms featured on the menu: -- Falafel over rice. ($11) Despite the 6 falafel balls clearly shown on the photo menu, I received only 4 balls. Unlike other place with similar dishes, no hummus was included. There was a small, lackluster salad (zero dressing) and an extra large pile of mediocre rice. (Perhaps they were trying to make up for the missing falafel?). A small triangle of pita on the side was store-bought and dry (a day old?) As for the falafel itself, it was fried-to-order and actually pretty good (7/10 on falafel scale). A damn shame, since this dish was a ripoff. (2*) -- Falafel Gyro ($9). My sandwich was very light, so I peeked inside to see what was what. Despite the 3 falafel balls clearly shown on the photo menu, I received only 2 balls. (I sense a theme here). Too bad again, cuz the quality wasn't half bad - decent, fresh falafel again. And this time the pita was better; it even looked homemade. But it was mostly filler inside; I felt like I was eating a lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle sandwich...with just a dash of falafel. Another ripoff. (2*). A few hours later I needed a snack. I'm amazed Halal Gyro Express enjoys a 4-star rating, and after reading other reviews, I see I am not alone in this opinion. I also notice plenty of 5-star reviews from yelpers with just a handful of reviews to their name. So it seems the "friends and family" plan is in full swing here. Ordered take-out from here, I called in and it was easy to place an order & they give a time estimate of when it'll be ready. I ordered the chicken & lamb over rice and would probably rate it a 3.5-3.75/5 stars. I thought the food was good, not great but very inexpensive. I liked how they have a regular sauce and a spicy sauce, I've never seen a restaurant do spicy white sauce-- it adds a good kick to it. You get a whole bowl of rice with chicken, lamb, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and pita bread for only $10 which is hard to get a meal for that nowadays!
