On the Lamb Anyone remember the halal street cart craze of about 10-15 years ago? It all started in NYC with the Halal Guys and worked its way here to Cali in the form of both copycats and the legit Halal Guys brick-and-mortar at The Plant. One of those was a street cart that used to be at the SW corner of E San Carlos St and S 2nd St called "Agha's Gyro Express." I had a legit obsession with them, as I would stop and get a plate of their lamb over rice every chance I could, but after a while, as foodies are known to do, I had moved on to my next obsession. I returned back a few years ago to try them out again and was sad to see them not there anymore. But, after a little research, I quickly discovered that they had opened up not one--but two brick-and-mortar restaurants. Huzzah! The Good: *They've expanded the menu beyond just plates, as they now have burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, and even a Philly cheesesteak. *Friendly service *Fast-casual order and pay at the counter, and then they'll deliver it to your table. *Prices were still very reasonable, as they used to be $8/plate, and are now only $12 which is a really great deal for lunch. Can't hardly eat anywhere for ±$20, these days. *You can now take a bottle of their white sauce back to your table and slather away to your hearts content. *The Lamb over Rice tasted a little bit different than I remembered, but if was still scrumptious as the greasy, well-spiced lamb goes harmoniously with their equally greasy and well-spiced rice. Once you add some white sauce to balance it out, it's like heaven on a fork. The Meh: *Shared parking lot (no street parking) but it can get busy on weekdays as it's shared with a bunch of other restaurants, a Mermaid, and some other small businesses. The Ugly: *They have some kind of housemade orange sauce (iykyk) that's supposed to be spicy but I didn't really care for it. I wish they'd bring back the old chili-garlic sauce from back in the day. Conclusion: Delicious, great value, and ice cold sodas. Perfect spot for lunch.

I don't know how to rate... this fully. The reason of me even going here in the first place is because my mother came to town to visit me on my birthday weekend, and she had a craving for chicken. Our options were to be as economical as possible. We were staying a few nights at the Homewood Suites about 3 mins walk around the compound. What I can say, the gentleman taking my order was quick and able to assist me asap. The restaurant was busy, I will give you that. However, I was shocked at how fast my food came out. But, upon my return to our hotel room, while the food had great color contrast, there was so much lacking. There wasn't enough spices to feel the savor of the flavor like the halal places in NY. So I guess that's there I had high expectations. Unfortunately, it really wasn't met, Both my mother and I concluded that the rice was... "wet", I hate using terms along those lines, but it just did. The only thing I really enjoyed was the salad, and that says something because my behind does not eat salad.

I was hoping to get one of those homemade tasting gyro. It really is your average tasting, nothing special gyro. What did stick out was the atmosphere and serves. I ordered a chicken Gyro with no onions, and yes it came with onion mixed in, with the time it took I wasn't about to ask for another one. The table arrangement is difficult to maneuver for a seat, I had to get up and ask for a sauce caddy. It's not a return location for me,.

Just finished my meal at a nearby Thai restaurant when I came upon this amazing halal restaurant serving falafel salad plate, gyro wrap, a combination of lamb, chicken or beef tikka platter along with chicken tenders, burgers and fries. Prices are very reasonable around $14 to $17 with diverse menu items and I chose #7 lamb and chicken on rice salad with lots of mixed veggies for extra carb and lean protein and service has been great no complaints. As I was leaving more people were coming in for take-out orders not too many dine-in customers. This surrounding area is pack and busy parking is a real challenge even on a Wednesday afternoon can't image what is like on the weekends. Would definitely come back for the falafel platter perhaps a baklava or two for $2.99 each.

Okay... so, this place might not look like the fanciest place in the world, but their gyros are incredible. I've eaten here twice, and both times I've eaten the food so quick, I forgot to even take a picture for the review haha. Don't forget to pour the orange sauce on your food generously. It'll be a tad spicy, but absolutely worth it.

It did have a lot of sugar, but it was pretty similar flavor-wise to Indian chai (sans milk), so it paired very well with our order. We ordered the chicken suqaar and the beef wrap. We opted for the chapati (sabaayad in Somali) with the chicken suqaar, but would love to try their rice or their version of injera during our next visit! The menu at first glance looks kinda confusing since they have Lunch in big letters on one side with a ton of their dishes and Dinner on the other side with the remainder of the dishes, making it seem like a few items are available during this time... but the Lunch portion just states that it comes with a side of rice, pasta, chapati, or injera (which is the same as Dinner...) so kind of an interesting stylistic choice there, but this is to say that everything on the menu is available the whole time they're open. The meals were so flavorful- the chicken suqaar had a ton of onions, carrots, chicken, green-bean like veggie, and spices, and was served with a green sauce that had kind of a habanero or jalapeno taste to it. The beef wrap was huge and I only ate half of one for dinner- it was flavored so well and the beef was cooked perfectly. This came with a side of the green sauce and a white sauce. I'd love to return and try their injera with chicken, kay kay chicken, beef suqaar or beef steak, and their sambusas! I saw some on another diner's plate and it looked sizable and filling. Today, I decided to order the Chicken Fajitas, and it completely exceeded my expectations. Without a doubt, it was the most delicious fajitas dish I have ever had. The portion size was very generous, and the sides were fantastic. The guacamole, sour cream, Spanish rice, and black beans were all fresh, flavorful, and complemented the meal perfectly. I finally decided to give it a try after hearing about the restaurant from food reviewer Dave fiore text. As someone who absolutely loves tacos and is always on the hunt for great local taco spots, I was excited to see how this place compared to some of my favorites. I ordered four different tacos, and overall, they were pretty good. They weren't bad by any means, but they also didn't quite blow me away. The meat was cooked well, the tortillas were fresh, and the tacos had good flavor. The salsa was decent too, although I personally prefer something with a little more kick. Everyone has different tastes, so this is just my opinion. One thing I really appreciated was how clean and organized the restaurant was. You can tell they take pride in keeping the dining area nice and welcoming. The staff was friendly, and my food came out quickly. It's always a good sign when a restaurant pays attention to both cleanliness and customer service. I've eaten at a lot of taco places throughout the Bay Area, so I naturally compare every new place to some of my favorites. While El Halal Mexican Restaurant didn't make the top of my list, I still had a good experience and I'm glad I finally gave it a shot. Not every restaurant has to be your favorite to be worth visiting. I also like supporting family-owned businesses because I know how much hard work goes into running a local restaurant. They deserve credit for creating a clean, welcoming place and serving quality food. Will I come back? Maybe. If I do, I'd probably try something different on the menu instead of the tacos. Sometimes a restaurant's best dish isn't the first thing you order, and I'd be interested in seeing what else they have to offer. Overall, I'd give El Halal Mexican Restaurant a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It was a good experience, I'm happy I finally got to try it, and if you're in the Willow Glen area, it's worth stopping by and deciding for yourself.

I ordered their chili lamb kabob which was tender and juicy. It had lots of flavor from the spices but enough to where it wasn't overwhelming. I ordered it on top of a pillow of rice which was fluffy and buttery textured. It was delicious. There are sauce bottles to pair with the meats which is my favorite part. I really liked their white creamy yogurt sauce mixed with their red house chili sauce. It gave my lamb meat so much flavor and some heat. I loved my order and will definitely order two next time. I also want to try their steaks. They take their time grilling their meats so orders can take a short while. It's worth it for sure. No complaints here but I do wish they played some light music in the background for some ambiance. Things can be real quiet in here so it can be awkward dining in.
