This is a home on the island of Kauai, but not just a home. It's a wildlife reserve, a paradise, an estate, a Hawaiian paradise. My mom got remarried back in 2003, and her husband took her to Lakeside Estate for their month-long honeymoon. She invited my boyfriend of the time and I to join them for a weekend in the huge house and it was the best 3 day trip of my life. It has it's own private lake, a 3-hole golf course, a waterfall, a tiny white-sand beach (on the lake), a rainforest, and pretty much every amenity you could want on your tropical vacation. I'm sure it's expensive as hell, but I wasn't paying. As far as the location...well yes, it would be nice if it was actually on a beach. But you have a little beach of your own, and all of Kauai's fabulous beaches are just short drives away. You are ten minutes from Princeville (shops, resorts, restaurants, etc) and 20 minutes from Hanalei, but set back from the main highway by a private road. Wake up every morning to see what new waterfalls have appeared on the mountains outside. You'll have to take a look at my pics to fully appreciate the place (and the website). But really, if you can afford it, stay somewhere like this, not a fancy-schmancy overpriced resort. Oh one thing....the geckos were a bit creepy. Ok sort of cute, and harmless, but they cover the windows at night and bark at you. But other than that, perfect.

There are two rooms to be rented out; one in-law and one room that the owner, Lee and his wife, Kathleen had converted their garage into. Both were oh so cute, quaint, and original. I loved the little knick-knacks that were sprinkled around in each place, def gives it da local flava bra. The room that my friend and I stayed in was labeled "The Cottage" and was the in-law. It had an upstairs with a full bed, one shared bathroom, 2 tvs, kitchenette and lanai-pretty full for amenities. There's also an additional bed that when you enter the cottage, is on the left, perhaps for more than just 2 people. The place can easily fit 3-4 people. Prices were super nice. At 60 bucks a night, this deal was a grand steal in my book. The hosts were so hospitable and Lee was just the nicest person! He had greeted us with a gift basket full of yummy hawaiian treats! He even replenished the creamer for coffee when we ran out! How awesome is that? There's even a little pool and seating area where you can rest after a long day's hike in the Napali coast. Or better yet, rest outside in his swinging hammock, feeling the warm sun rays hit your face. I was definitely in vacay mode the whole time I was there! The place is actually fairly easy to find from the Li'hue airport and so if you are looking for that special, on the cheaper end-but not motel 8 cheap vacation rental that gives you a local island feel, then I highly recommend this place.

At the end of an exhaustive list of serious problems, the cockroach infestation got the better of us. On entering, you realize the place is totally misrepresented. Far from being a quaint Hawaiian throwback, the 'suite' hasn't had any love since the 70s. First, it's filthy: the fluorescent striplight housing throughout is full of dead flies and roaches, the skirting boards are black with dirt, the shower curtains are flecked with black mould, the grout is disgusting, the brown bathroom tiles are stained, the couches in the living room area are revolting (creases in the old grey leather are dark with years of dirt - we had to throw bedsheets over them just to be able to sit on them), the mattress on the master bed has broken springs that stick out, the curtains are non-existent, the beach paraphernalia is rusty and broken, the kitchen has the bare minimum of crockery and utensils (good luck opening wine with the pathetic corkscrew), the kettle was broken, the fridge had been painted white (assumedly because it was disgusting beforehand)... I really could go on. But the climax of this disaster was the cockroach infestation. We first saw a couple of roaches on our first night but the owner told us it was a tropical island and there was no avoiding them. We tried so very hard to swallow this until we visited other friends staying nearby in other houses that had been updated in the past half-century. Obviously, they did not have any problems with roaches. On the fourth night, we returned to a kitchen alive with cockroaches. We had passed the tipping point of a stray roach passing through - we never cooked in the kitchen and no food had been left anywhere. It's clear that the house needs fumigating. We left the following day and flew home. The owner was lovely at the beginning of the booking but, as the problems presented themselves, she wouldn't even entertain the idea of a refund. We emailed her immediately on arrival to explain that we wanted to leave and even offered to pay for a few nights (so she could retain some of the income from our stay). The answer was a resounding "no". She wouldn't acknowledge that the house is in a state of disrepair. She offered us a new kettle and a re-clean (which never happened) but, frankly, the place needs a total overhaul. If we had paid a third of the considerable price (over $2000 for the week), we might have had to accept that you get what you pay for. But, for over $2000, you expect a minimal level of quality. Here, the owners are cashing in on a near-beach location - they have absolutely no interest in putting any of their money into fixing this disaster zone. In the end, we have complained to VRBO and will be seeking a refund through Amex. Interestingly, the Hanalei Villa website no longer works and the VRBO listing has disappeared. Very odd; I just hope the health inspectors have closed the property and that the owners will be obligated to sort the place out. It's an absolute disgrace. For the record, we've travelled pretty extensively over the course of our lives, stayed in our fair share of shitholes, but this place is well over the line in terms of what is acceptable. Please, please go elsewhere.

The bed was extremely comfortable. I believe we were in unit A1. The sea lodge is a fantastic location in Princeville and after a whole bunch of research we found it was the best price with location of which you can see the ocean from almost all areas. They've got a cute little pool they keep the place spotless and we walk down to the beach which by the way I had just had both of my knees replaced and I'm a pretty big guy, but I was able to do it and down there. It's pretty amazing but you definitely wanna use walking shoes do not go down and flip-flops. Maybe bring a stick with you. We love the location close to Hanalei, which by the way if you want to go to for some great fish and chips pass, Hanalei is a place called Opakapaka Grill. Fantastic fish, and chips and fries! And decently priced beers. Anyway, the woman I dealt with at hysteria I believe her name was Gloria was just wonderful and was very proud of all the units that they manage.
