We went to Hale's Kitchen as a family and had a pleasant time. The service was friendly and attentive, we got our food in a timely manner, and the dining area was clean and welcoming. It was spacious enough and not too formal for us to be able to bring in our stroller with infant seat so baby would be able to sleep through the meal. One thing to note is that they don't have a kids' menu, but it is not a problem because there are plenty of items on the menu that are great for kids! We really liked the chicken and fries that we ordered for our kids. The chicken was very tender and breaded really well and very crispy, though it would've been nice with a little more seasoning. I found it necessary to dip the chicken in sauce for the flavor. Speaking of sauce, I really liked the crack sauce. Definitely recommend that! My spouse's family is from Louisiana, so we've been there a few times together and I've eaten my fair share of fried chicken and shrimp po' boys. I would have loved the po' boy I got at Hale's if the bread had been fresh. Unfortunately, the bread on my po' boy and my spouse's was quite stale, dry, and hard, so when we took a bite of the sandwich, everything came tumbling out. It was difficult to eat! I had to eat my sandwich open faced because of the bread situation. If it weren't for the stale bread, it would have been a great po' boy: perfectly fried shrimp, tasty sauce, big slices of tomato, chopped lettuce. If I could guarantee that the bread were nice and fresh, I would order another po' boy from Hale's Kitchen in a heartbeat. I'm sure this is just a small kink that needs to be ironed out since they are such a new restaurant. We are excited to have a Southern food restaurant in town. But still happily charged $8 for. 5) idk where people are getting the flavor from bc there is none. They didn't add anything to the breading or brine the chicken. 6) pretty much the worst "southern" cooking I've had and I thought BBQ joint was terrible. 7) wasn't at all busy and the "dining area" was trashed but the owners wife and her friends were having a great time in the bar area. Noticed coco melon was on, also noticed baby's in the bar which is illegal. 8) I don't get the positive reviews. Do y'all like bland food? Couldn't get half our food, tasted terrible, the girl at the front said "working here isn't that bad I guess." Figure it out. You've been open long enough to not have these issues. Edit: that is not at all how that conversation went with your employee, so they're lying to you. Lots of areas for improvement! Gone twice now since soft opening! I was invited for the soft opening as I was a returning customer since they were just a "ghost" restaurant. I will be raw honest in this review. Let's start off with the goods. Good: 1. We ordered Chicken & Waffles during soft opening. Chicken is tasty & soft but crunchy on the outside. Waffles are good. 2. Interior seems it's coming together. 3. Ordered to-go on their grand opening day came out pretty fast. 4. Order shrimp po boy and 5 pc chicken tenders w/ mac & cheese and fries. Shrimp was good and chicken was good. 4. Cakes are soooo good. Taste like made from scratch. 5. Prices are reasonable. Bad: 1. Soft opening day - there's something off with chicken & waffles. Individual pieces are good but together, not really. I feel like something was missing. Chicken was tasty but coating was falling off from the chicken soon as you pick up. As if it's not adhering to the chicken piece. 2. Presentation- it was too gimicky, food was served in an almost tray but tables were too small to even fit on the table. There was almost no room when all our orders came out. I think simple and less is more. Food plating is ok. It looks like they tried. 3. On the grand opening, I came back to order for pick-up. I wouldn't say i liked the Shrimp po-boy. Shrimp was on point BY ITSELF. Shrimp was well seasoned, texture was great and decent size but idk about how the proportion of it to the bread and everything else with it. The sauce used was good but that break killed the vibe for me. It was not a good choice of bread. Bread was to big and stale. Flavors were not cohesive. Every bite is like all bread with a little bit of po boy shrimp 4. Mac & cheese was pretty disappointing it reminds me of when we didn't have enough supply when I was deployed, that's how exactly mac n cheese tastes like served in our galley. 5. Last but not the least, the fries taste like came out straight from the bag. It ain't bad. It just really taste like straight outta Safeway fridge. I know it seemed like I'm speaking negatively but it is what it is. Restaurant just opened up and will only improve with serious acceptance on customer's feedback. I'd still come back to this restaurant every once in awhile but I don't think it's going to be the go-to for me. There's not really much to choose from in Oak Harbor sooo.. yeah. My biggest issue is that they currently don't take cash..... I don't think I'll be going back until they do. The menu is extremely limited. You have to order right upfront so if you're expecting to have a seat and order this ain't the joint. But that's alright Food was good. I had the Po Boy. The bun was a bit tough in some places and you can't really close the thing to eat it, you're better off taking half off and eating that when you get a bite of just bread and condiments. The decor is very basic, hopefully they will spruce up the place and put in more booths along the side and back to fill out the place. Arrive about 3pm on a Thursday. The place was practically empty, so we thought it would be easy to get food. Bar was open so we went in.......sat there 10min.......no response. We up to the front counter and ordered.........no response for at least 15min. I've got to tell you.............I usually give people the benefit of the doubt, but we were very unhappy on that visit. We even discussed it with another patron who also experienced the same thing. I should have never given the tip up front. I'm a large tipper (40%), but if I would have known it was that kind of service...............I would have (on those rare occasions) given no tip at all. Fried Pickles isn't actually part of the sides even though its on the sides menu. They had horrible customer service, didnt get offered water like you would think its common thing all restaurants do it. We had to ask twice for a fork to eat our mac & cheese & by the time we ate it was already cold. They only took credit, they did not take cash but had no sign in the front. My husband & I both ordered the crack sauce, but they were both different flavors. The food was alright, the sweet tea was good too. Hopefully they get better!
