Also did the carne asada - meat was nicely charred without being overcooked, and loved the roasted jalepenos it came with. Free chips and salsa, which is increasingly rare. I wanted to love this place but my experience left me wanting. When I was planning my trip, I knew I wanted to have a Mexican meal in La Conner and there were only 2 Mexican restaurants there. I decided on this place based on reviews and it seemed more homely and not as modern as the other one. Maybe it was me arriving in a neither here nor there timing. Due to traffic conditions to La Conner, I was there around 330 pm for a super late lunch. There was only 1 other table occupied and there were 2 staff on duty. The first impression was the server did not seem like she wanted to be there. Then it took a while before she came over to get my order. I had to walk to the bar/kitchen area to catch the attention of a staff when I wanted my check and a to go box. When I left, nobody acknowledged it. Not sure if they even noticed it. So the service definitely could be better during the off peak hours. The food was mediocre. It was tasteless yet salty. I know, strange combination. I could only taste salt and none of the flavors of the food. Even the salsa for the chips was very mild tasting. I always like chile verde and I had it at another Mexican restaurant a few weeks before this in Bellingham, and that was pretty good. So it was quite disappointing to have this version. The portion was ok though the small scoop of guacamole and sour cream was quite pathetic. Overall, it was just not a pleasant experience here. I definitely will not be back. Let me start and say the chips tasted like they were made with old oil. It was the first time I've been presented with chips and salsa and I could only eat one! We then ordered - I got the shrimp fajitas & my husband ordered the special, which was crema enchiladas. My fajitas were fine- shrimp was cooked well but overall, it was nothing special. My husband's enchiladas hardly had any chicken & the chicken that was there was rubbery & not flavorful. The cream sauce was bland as well. While the staff at Santo Coyote were delightful (especially our waitress), and the decor is beautiful, unfortunately the food we ordered was pretty mediocre. The table side guacamole was fresh, and once we added more salt, it was pretty good. However, the chicken dish we ordered was dry and incredibly bland. We were also disappointed to find that the restaurant doesn't make any of their own tortillas. Even the churros we ordered at the end of the meal were over cooked. So, while the family that owns this restaurant seems truly special, the actual eating experience was less than stellar (sadly). We definitely want to give this restaurant another try in the future, as other reviewers have obviously had much better experiences, and again, the staff and environment are wonderful. read more

Honestly, I'm puzzled about how this place manages to stay in business, especially with a Mexican eatery like COA nearby. COA's cuisine is significantly better, with larger portions. Santo Coyote's chimichanga, which was smaller and pricier, with a $2 upcharge for bland and basic cream sauce, doesn't even come close to to COA's chimichanga. The difference is wild. Additionally, COA's chips are much more delicious than those at Santo Coyote's. I cannot begin to explain the great customer service we received. During Covid-19 stay at home order, our anniversary plans were ruined. We booked a room for B&B and decided to get takout here. First, my expectations are high since I am Mexican. The woman greeted us so warmly and to our surprise, she eas taking orders, running back and cooking, and making drinks. We told her we were going to go eat at our car and she told us to give her a few minutes so she could set a table in the patio. It really made our day as we were able to have the feeling like we had a dine-in experience. It meant so much to us as it was the first time we really got to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Next, the food. My taquitos en mole were AMAZING. I could tell thwy actually make the rice sauce and not use a can sauce. The beans were very good and not overly cooked in the lard. The taquitos were perfectly crisp with nice juicy chicken and the perfect amount of mole. The mole was delicious mix of sweet and spicy. The carne asada meat was rhe good meat. Nice and juicy instead of the cheap meat other places use. The horchata was gooe. The Hibiscus margarita was my favorite. Be careful tjough, it creeps up on you ahaha. I had the chili verde and the chunks of pork were very well seasoned and coated in beautifully rich chili and pork juices. The portion sizes were huge and the lunch time prices were very reasonable. In Seattle, the quality of food and the portion size alone would have demanded an extra $5-10 per dish. To top off the lunch time dining experience, our server (Crystal) was warm, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the menu. If you are looking for gluten free options, this restaurant is the place. Bad service, bad attitude. Came as a family of 5, including grandparents and a dog, so asked to sit outside. Observations: 1. Being it was early afternoon, we setup the umbrella to block the Sun. They then removed it. 2. Service was slow, we waited outside for at least 15mins and nobody brought over menus, etc. 3. Staff were generally rude in their tone, and it reflected in how they appreciated their customers. A thick layer, never been cleaned. When we ordered our food, my husband made it very clear that he doesn't like tomatoes and asked that no tomatoes were on his order. When the food came... tomatoes. His food was Luke warm and the ground beef looked as if it had been colored. It had a weird pink/red color and consistency. I had the 3 tacos and could barely eat one... way too salty. Looks can be be deceiving if you are making a snap judgement about the exterior, as it is not fancy, however, the interior is quite nice. The food has always been very good and plentiful, and the margaritas and micheladas more than quench your thirst. Personally, the location is ideal, as it is directly across the street from the Country Inn, which is where I always stay when in town. Greeted quickly at the door, and sat with menus. Service was outstanding for only having two people working. It was a tad slow as there was a crowd, but small town slow and we had nowhere to be so why the rush? And the waitress was so polite and nice. Ordered food and enjoyed the salsa and chips. Got the Asada burrito. Most places, it's Usually light on the asada. This was packed full of tender, tasty, meat. Everything was outstanding. The beans and rice, the fillings, all of it. Went to see the tulips and our first stop was in La Conner. All the other restaurants had long lines so stopped here for lunch. During COVID times the indoor seating was well spaced out which is nice and the staff was very attentive. We were served with complimentary chips and salsa which I love. My fiance and I both got the combo which included rice and beans for $10 each. The food was made fresh and we both enjoyed it. This is my family's favorite Mexican restaurant! We've been visiting here for a couple years now, and all the staff are so warm, kind, and welcoming. Their food is delicious and they are very accommodating for dietary restrictions. I can't eat dairy or gluten, and every time I want to try a dish, they're able to add or subtract anything I want to make it fit my needs. They have everything on their menu from burritos to salads, and the quality of their ingredients is very high! If you're here, I highly recommend trying the guacamole. They make it fresh at your table and it is literally the BEST guacamole you will find. My family even asked them for the recipe at one point so we could make it at home on our taco nights.
