In mid-June one of my solar panels stopped working. From their web site I submitted a service request (at first I left a voice mail message but they then sent an email asking me to submit the electronic service request form). Sasha and Sadejsha provided rapid responses to my situation and questions, including explaining that they would have Enphase try a software fix and if that did not work, a replacement inverter would be ordered. About a week later they contacted me after Enphase could not implement a remote software fix and soon after we set up a repair date. I was happy that the new inverter was a free warranty replacement (Haleakala installed my system about 10 years ago so they have information on the system's history). There was an installation service fee but that is fine and was expected, so no controversy there. Kekoa came to install the new inverter. After discussing the best way for Kekoa to access my roof (rain gutters and overhanging roof tiles presented ladder issues), Kekoa did a fast inverter replacement and all is good. In all, it was about a 14 day process from service request to new inverter installation, which is fast for this type of business/situation. I had a new solar water heater installed by Haleakala Solar. A few weeks after the install I realized there was damage to my brand new metal roof and an issue with the water heater itself. I sent messages to the salesman, left messages at the Maui office, submitted service requests, and an email to the Oahu office, all with NO response. Finally, months later I was able to talk to a person at the Maui location. A company representative came to my home, acknowledged the roof damage, and told me a tech would need to look at the water heater. That was over a month ago. I have yet to hear anything further from Haleakala Solar. Called their Maui office but no answer, as seems to be the norm, so I left a voicemail (Isaac?). Another week has passed, still no response. Guess my next step will be a formal complaint with RICO. read more

When it comes to making sure their job was done correctly, I have to commend both Law and Mokihana from Haleakala Solar. When our newly installed battery back up would not stop tripping...because of the old wiring within our walls(or so we thought), they came back and back and back again until they found the reason! This may sound like business as usual but be assured it wasn't as both Meco and Haleakala had signed off "their job" as it worked, however, as electricians, Law and Mokihana felt it necessary to dig deeper and find a solution! Horrible warranty service nothing covered only what manufacturer will warranty and you do all the leg work. They told us it's covered under warranty but we need to call distributor and manufacturer to get a replacement. We bought a 12yr old house in Ewa Beach 2yrs ago and inherited a now out-dated solar water heater system. The pipes were installed through the inside of the house so they cut a hole in the roof and ran the pipes down through closets into the garage. It has always looked unsightly and unfinished to us. We kept the pipes behind closed doors until a recent heavy downpour broke the roof seal and we had a man-made waterfall bursting to get out of the closet, lol. Obviously we youtubed roof repair and caulked, and caulked some more for good measure just to get things started for when the real roof repair guy showed up right! Then we discover water dripping from the side of the water heater tank from under a covered panel where the element and other tank stuff resides. It went from a week of dripping to emptying out a 10gal bucket every 4-6hrs. So like all die-hard youtubers we finally surrendered and found some great reviews on Yelp about Haleakala Solar. Yes, we drank the cool-aid and it was surprisingly good! The office staff were great listening to our story of water damage and woe and within minutes I was setting up a same day appointment with Brian Ching to come out and assess our repairs. He came, he saw, and tried to put a rush on our job but their Crews were already booked and couldn't get to us for 2 days. No worries, Brian say's, and offers to get a tank from Kailua, and install it himself. It was late in the day, it was rush hour on the H1, and it was an awesome gesture of goodwill from Brian that we very much appreciated but did not want him traveling and working all hours of the night. So we bailed buckets for 1 more day till a Crew could come out. I gotta say, "The Crew" is somewhat of an understatement...is more like "The Bomb Diggity Crew! Four very professional, courteous, and skilled tradesmen named Quinn, Daniel, John, and Travis arrived to save us from our water-damage dilemma. Comprised of a Welder, an Electrician, and Roofers, these guys took off the old solar panels, fixed and sealed the roof hole, installed the new singular panel away from the damaged roof section, ran the pipes down the house exterior, covered the pipes perfectly with slimduct that closely matches the exterior paint and when the HOA checked it out they gave us thumbs up so we don't have to paint it...yes! Btw, our roofer was so cool dressed up like a ninja in full sun protection gear and watching them hoist and push a huge solar panel up a ladder made me nervous but they rocked it so everything was safe and secure. On the interior they removed all the old ugly pipes, removed the old heater, and installed the new one with pipes that look like a welded work of art. They also Installed a new electrical outlet for an upgraded pump and attached our heater timer to the wall so everything makes visual sense to me and I am very, very, pleased. Our new system is running smoothly although we can't hear anything because the pump is soundless, yes, just one more thing to brag about. So what did it cost us? $7000.00 minus a $1000.00 rebate and a $1900 State Tax break....after deductions it's still a lot of money, but for the extra stuff we had done it was worth it. read more

We had a PV system installed by Haleakala Solar in 2015. In April 2018 we noticed a water stain on the ceiling of our master bath. Haleakala sent out someone to check on their installation of panels above our bath. He patched some of the penetration holes above the bath. He said someone would come to evaluate the ceiling damage, but no one came, A year later, April 2019, the stains had increased and another person came and resealed the penetrations and sealed more of the penetration holes. He also said someone would come to evaluate the ceiling damage. Again no one came. Multiple calls were made to the company, but no one would come out. Finally in Sept 2019, they sent out a roofer who noted the stains and submitted his report. However nothing was done. More calls were made and promises made, but still nothing was done. Another roofer was sent out in Sept and noted the stains and commented that there was still a leak. Still the company failed to follow up on his report. More calls have been made and we are told that it is being looked into by management. When we installed the system Haleakala was locally owned and they provided good service. Somewhere along the way it was sold to a mainland roofing company that also does solar; and this is the company we are now dealing with. The new ownership service has been extremely poor. We have a 10 year warranty on the installation. It has been a frustrating journey. It seems that they are trying to wait us out and hope we get tired and let them off the hook. we continue to call. Am writing this review as part of trying to shame them into action. Will also submit a complaint to the State Contractors Licensing Board. Lastly will consider litigation. 6/13/2019 update - Got the company to remove all the PV panels from the leak site, (about 40ftx40 ft) on their dime and we paid for another roofer to recoat the entire area. Feb 2023 update - Another drip leak started in the same area. Had the same roofer come out to see if he could patch the penetrations from 3 of the PV panels. He said that the space between the roof surface and the bottom of the panels was too small for him to get his hand in to reseal the penetrations. He suggested calling Haleakala to see if they could remove the panels so could reach the penetrations to reseal them. (Haleakala did the sealing of the penetrations in 2019 when they replaced the panels, so they are probably responsible for the reseal too). I tried calling the 2016 phone number multiple times and each time got a busy signal. Went online and found that they changed their number. Have been calling for 3 hours, 8 am to 11 am and no one answers the phone. Also no answering machine or voice mail. For a company that advertises itself as a great company, they are anything but great, not even good. They are poor and seem to have no problem lying about it. Back in 2012 during the early years of the renewable clean energy movement, we selected Haleakala over all the numerous solar companies, big and small (some non-existent today) and we're super glad we went with Haleakala! We have both a solar water and PV (NEM) system. Long story short, we discovered a slow leak in our roof near the PV system and asked if Haleakala can take a look, either warranty (repair) or make recommendations. Mo and Pono came out within a week of notifying Haleakala and attacked the issue and did right by us. Although it was 50/50 roof or the PV install, Mo and Pono did what they could; evaluated the issue then went up on the roof and sealed the area the best they could. This is the first time we requested assistance from Haleakala post PV/solar hot water install and Haleakala lives up to their customer service, post sales/installation - awesome analysis, very courteous and explained the issue and plan for resolution thoroughly. We hope our leak is no longer. Bottom line: Haleakala has been around since 2012 (and earlier), customer service is awesome and in our book, they are #1 for anyone looking for solar PV or hot water. P.S. Due to the solar credits being reduced after this year 2019 (better jump on the bandwagon if you can), we are adding a NEM Plus system which will allows us some power during a power outage (NEM does not allow us this benefit). We look forward to reaping the benefits of renewable energy with the benefit of stored energy and knowing we have Haleakala Solar's support in the future is piece of mind (will post another review after our NEM Plus install). read more

Haleakala did a great job of selling however once I "signed up", I have had little to no feedback on when they would start my installation. I signed my agreement in July and it is now mid-January. I seriously question whether my salesperson and my assigned Project manager are still employed because I have not heard from them in a couple months despite my emailing them every couple of weeks. Even Hawaiian Electric is sending me surveys about how I'm enjoying my new solar system since that permitting process was completed so many months ago. I'm especially distressed that no one from Haleakala is responding to their customer... and now that we're in a new year -I've lost out on 2022's tax credits. I cannot recommend Haleakala Solar and have fielded questions recommending they look elsewhere. If I could rate zero stars I would have chosen that. read more

They used to be good when it was locally owned (Haleakala), now it's mainland (petersen dean) owned and fly-by-night. I checked their BBB rating and they have a "F" grade. They are doing new installs like crazy, but as soon as you have problems, you are on your own! Avoid these guys period! My system is only working at 50% so now I pay 2 bills, one to the bank loan and one to HECO. When I initially called in March no one came out till May, yes it was COVID but not one single notice or call until 2 months later? It's now end of July and my system is still not fixed. BTW all techs and customer service have left since May and there is high employee turnover. The last tech that came over said he was quitting because they were running him ragged and he was tired of dealing with all these irate customers. He knows of one customer that had 5 visits and his system is still down till today! Looks like they are setting up to either sell out or go bankrupt. When I have reached out to them they say they'll look into it and then never call back. I have email exchanges and phone calls to them since March and nothing is done. I'm quite puzzled at the negative reviews posted here. Haleakala Solar just completed a removal and replacement of my solar water heater system and I was totally satisfied from start to finish. They evaluated the job, gave me a quote, designed the project, submitted the required paperwork to our community association architectural committee and explained the tax benefits available. As for the actual work I was very impressed with Mo and his crew. They showed up on time as scheduled, worked safely and efficiently and paid attention to details. Mo also was very informative answering all the questions I had about the project. I was totally satisfied with the final result. When I had a problem with tripping off my solar system they quickly responded. The original problem arose when I was replacing a broken three-way light switch. I did it incorrectly and overloaded the circuit and tripped off breakers in my critical loads breaker box and the inverter. Moki and Wes responded immediately and got our power restored. The day of our scheduled appointment they decide to call and ask us(last minute) to switch our time from 10:30am to 4pm. That's no bueno. We took time to clean and schedule in with them. The fact is they did not think about the customer and what we had to do for the day. We made that appointment in the morning for a reason. My wife and I decided to stop paying HECO and install a PV system on our house. Contacting three companies via their online contact form, Haleakala (called the next day), Kumu Kit (called a few days later), and Solar City (never called) we decided to go with Haleakala. Our salesman, Brian Ching, was very attentive to our questions and ALWAYS responded by the end of the day. I'm sure I nagged the heck out of him, but I would recommend Haleakala to anybody. Haleakala has a standard which is unmatched, and they refer to it as "the Haleakala way." Their way is clearly evident from start to finish. Every member of their teams is polite, courteous, and maintains the utmost professionalism at all times. On the install day I stopped by Sherwin Williams to purchase a can of paint to match the color of my house so the electrical wiring would be the same color. When I return, the lead electrician tells me it was not needed since the house had been wired for a PV system. Yes, it took a little extra work, but unlike other houses in the neighborhood with a "after market" PV system, I do not have wiring running down the side of my house. I was surprised by this and the response was "this is the Haleakala way." The system is by far the cleanest on the block and there is not a noticeable electrical wire, anywhere. Everything is hidden from view. Additionally, after the installation is complete, the lead installer took pictures for quality control purposes. Haleakala holds themselves to a standard and ensures their standards are maintained at all times. I recommend taking a few extra minutes, talk to these guys, and you'll be enlightened to "the Haleakala way." I'm glad Solar City did not contact me as they were my first choice. read more

I needed my solar water heater serviced and had no idea who to call. It seems like everyone and their mother, cousin, neighbor's uncle, etc. has a solar company or works for one. How do you know who is reputable? Yelp to the rescue! Haleakala Solar had the highest reviews, so I called them first. From the start, the service was great, and if you read my reviews, you know that I am all about service. It matters, esp. when there are many companies you can take your business to! About 30 minutes before my scheduled service time, the technicians Cliff and Kamu called me to let me know that they would arrive in 30 minutes for the service. They arrived on time and were extremely professional and polite. It was actually a little unnerving how professional and polite they were, because in my experience, a lot of service people are tired of idiot homeowners who have no idea what is wrong with their stuff. They were very patient with me. Apparently, your water heater is supposed to be serviced yearly. They go through a complete inspection checklist, including washing the solar panels themselves. I was also impressed that they discovered things along the way that needed to be fixed and FIXED THEM. Most companies are like, "yo, your thing needs to be fixed. It will take 2 minutes, but you can schedule an appointment and we'll come back." Nope, Haleakala Solar tightened some leaking pipes and I didn't have to pay extra. Score. You would think that this would be standard across all companies, so maybe it is sad that I am counting this as a win. Overall, good stuff. I initially called and dealt with another solar company who gave me the run arounds. My water heater caught on fire so I decided to go ahead and switch to a solar water heater. I was out of hot water for a couple of days trying to get this other company to come out and take a look and give me a time and date to switch. Obviously they didn't help so I called Haleakala Solar and talked to Brian Ching. Brian came out that day and brought a water heater that he had on hand and switched out my old heater by himself. He told me "You have kids? Oh brah! You need hot water". He started the paperwork and said you can hold on to my water heater until we install the solar water heater. A couple of weeks later they came out to my home and switch out the heaters and I didn't have to pay anything for the water heater that he let me borrow. I recently just finished the process of installing a Solar PV sysytem on my home. I have dealt with Brian through the whole process and he has helped me through every step. The whole Haleakala Solar ohana from the design team to the installation has been very helpful and professional. We just got through with our final building inspection from the C&C and passed with flying colors. Everything with this installation was outstanding. From our sales rep, Chris Hanson, to the installation team that came out, to Moki who was here for the final inspection, everything was first class. Even though Haleakala Solar wasn't the cheapest, I went with a company that had a long history of business in Hawaii, a good BBB report, of course good Yelp reviews. I interviewed a number of other solar companies (lease and purchase systems) and I went with Haleakala and can't be happier. My neighbor went with a different company and unfortunately can't say the same. His system failed the C&C inspection so the install team (sub contractors) have to come out and redo the system. It pays to go with a good company and not one that just got in for the solar tax credit rush. read more

My technical representative was fabulous and kept track of progress throughout the entire installation process. Unlike other companies -- many of which left me feeling like it was only a sales pitch and not a solid start to finish product -- Haleakala has great communication with all facets of installation. In fact, it only took a few months from when the contract was signed until HECO closed the process by installing the net metering system. Really! I was shocked, particularly because there have been so many articles in the news about how long some homeowners are waiting. Lance Kamisato kept us informed as to what was happening on a regular basis. They were able to install the system earlier than anticipated and the crew that handled the installation was super. I did some heavy research when it came to getting solar pv. I created a spreadsheet and contacted some of the well known companies that you hear on the radio or see on TV. Some of the other companies out there had some good prices but their salesman were incompetent and did not know much about their product. The decision was between Haleakala and another well known company that has the Hawaiian word for "teacher" in their name. :) I told my salesman James Escobido about what they had to offer me and he came back and offered me a better deal. I do not recommend using this company for your solar needs! Multiple failures along the way! I had to cancel two orders (PV and hot water heater) based on the longevity of the permit process to get my installation started (put in the order Sept of 2018). I wasn't able to clear the 2019 tax credit window and therefore it wasn't worth my money to receive the tax incentives based on the amount of money I was putting down. When I talked to an agent (mainland of course through outsourcing), I made sure I recorded the conversation and inform them of the disappointment of the poor customer service they have based on my sales. I know they won't listen and that is why I am leaving this negative review on BBB so at least it can create a little bit of buzz. read more

Travis was great, but the lady scheduling servicing was disorganized. They canceled my appointment because of rain (totally not their fault), and got rescheduled to the next Monday morning. They didn't show up that Monday morning, and I called to figure out what was going on. The same lady that scheduled me answered, and said she would try and figure out what happened and call me back....but no call back. I called back again and she put me on hold, the told me that a technician made the repair. I'm not clear that the repair was made, so I asked her how I could confirm. My experience with Haleakala Solar/PetersonDean Roofing was a mixed bag with generally poor customer service, poor operations, and non-stop delays. I am very satisfied with the end product but the road to get there was fraught with frustrations. After getting quotes from six well ranked companies both Haleakala and SunPower were able to provide us with quality panels at nearly the same price. Ultimately, SunPower turned us off with their "know-it-all" attitude and constant bashing of their competitors so we felt Haleakala would be the better business to work with. John H., our salesman, seemed like a genuine straight-shooter. He told us about the SIA program which, while not as streamlined as CSS, he promised we would have on our home in 3-6 months. He also told us we would have a significantly lower minimum bill than the CSS $25 a month minimum bill. I gave John a $1000 check on November 5th, 2017 to get the processing moving. Two and a half weeks later Haleakala finally did a site survey. We then heard nothing till December 19th when I called Haleakala and John informed me he didn't have any of our paperwork and asked that we resubmit. Just after the holidays I was looking through the completed design plan and realized Haleakala had placed all the panels in unbroken rows - on a roof covered in vents. The SunPower representative had accurately laid out the panels, accounting for vents, while sitting at my kitchen table. The fact that Haleakala wasn't able to get this right two months into the project was an indicator of what was to come. Our application was finally submitted to HECO on January 11th, 2018, nine weeks after we made our down payment. The application was then rejected on February 13th because Haleakala has submitted the application without the required site plans. That entire month was wasted as the application had to go back through HECO's approval process. Three months in and Haleakala had accomplished as much as SunPower had in one week (they completed all the paperwork and submitted my CSS application to HECO the same week I sat down with their salesman). HECO approved our SIA application on March 26th, 2018 and Haleakala installed the system on April 2nd and 3rd. We had a couple small hiccups (they expected me to go buy paint to match the singles and they had to come back to fix some minor damage to the panels) but the installation was comparatively painless. My wife and I then had to repeatedly call the building inspectors and Haleakala for weeks to get the building permits closed out. Two months later, the permits were finally closed out and we were able to schedule the witness verification test for June 9th only to discover the battery was dead so we failed the test. Come to find out, the battery was dead on installation, but the installers hadn't tested the system when they installed it. While the battery was replaced, HECO then found issues with other SIA systems using a Tesla battery and all approvals for Tesla SIAs were put on hold through the summer. It wasn't until December 14th that HECO finally permitted any new Tesla SIA systems to be brought online. Haleakala blamed HECO for all approval delays, however, the truth is that if Haleakala had not lost paperwork, had done the design process correctly, and submitted a completed packet to HECO the first time we would have received our HECO approval two months earlier and our system would have been online before HECO identified the Tesla gateway concern that kept us down from June till December. If they had tested the system at installation and had a better process to close out building permits we would have easily been operational by May, within the six month timeline we were originally given. To their credit, Greg H. and Tom H., the Haleakala and PetersonDean boss men (PetersonDean bought out Haleakala during the middle of our installation) became very involved after I submitted a BBB complaint and things became greatly expedited. Unfortunately, by then HECO had shut down all Tesla SIA approvals. Haleakala also gave me a $450 discount to offset electricity costs the system should have covered which was a nice gesture even if I lost way more than that on the delays. I've had a few technical issues since we went online and Haleakala has been quick to respond. The system is working well and I found out during one of our visits with a Tesla rep that the SIA approval (which allows power to be exported to the grid) will permit our system to stay online in the event of a total power outage, unlike a CSS system which requires additional components that cannot operate without a grid connection. Though the SIA has the same $25 a month minimum charge (contrary to the salesman's claims) and took longer to get approved I am satisfied with the final product and glad we have a system that can provide us power if a hurricane takes the rest of the grid down. Too bad we had to go through fourteen months of frustration to get it online. read more

We installed a full battery system with solar panels in 2015. The inverter became in operable in 2019 and we have been trying to reach Haleakala or PetersenDean Unsuccessfully. Haleakala's phone numbers are not operable and PetersenDean does not return phone messages. I went directly to the manufacturer because I have a warranty certificate for 25 years but Outback says that their warranty is for only five years. The warranty certificate I have is Haleakala and not Outback. Without the inverter the batteries do not work. $75,000 down the drain unless I buy a new inverter and pay for the installation from someone else. read more

We purchased 24 solar panels from Haleakala Solar nine years ago. They did a great job and their service was good for three years. All of the people involved have long since moved on it seems. They are now a subsidiary of PetersenDean. They are useless. They will not provide service. When I have lost a microinverter or have other maintenance issues, I spend months trying to get them to come out. Eventually, I have to hire another company. If you plan on staying in your home more than a year or two, do not hire this company. read more
