Overrated... $800-900 for a standard room. Surrounded by other hotels, towering over the property. Only enough lounge chairs at the pool for half the hotel guests. The neighborhood is stimulating however, there were many undesirable type vagrants walking around as well. I felt as though the management tried to make up for these short comings by providing extra service. Well, no amount of smiling or complimentary fruit in the room will accomplish that. The restaurants are nice but, they felt a bit pretentious and stuffy. The Ko'olina properties, Turtle Bay Resort, and the Kahala are better choices for a relaxing experience. One and done. read more

So many issues with the pool and possibly why we wont be returning. It closes down at 'sunset'. So different time each day?? great! They start hanging ropes an hour before the closing time. So uncomfortable. What resort closes the pool at ~7??! 2. Beach 5/10. A small strip, need key to get back in. 3. Kid friendliness 0/10. Why dont they make it adults only? Asking kids to stop playing, stop running around, stop making noise multiple times throughout. Not providing a crib in addition to the pullout bed. My toddler would sleep on the pullout and 1.5 yr old in the crib. 4. Wedding on the venue, while may be beautiful for attendees, it closes off half the lawns for everyone else. Its a gorgeous property, right in the heart of waikiki (gets a bit too busy though, imo ). Highly unlikely to return. read more

The property has an amazing garden knoll right in the middle, simple and gorgeous. With rooms overlooking. Even the garden area that near the beach which may also be a major spot feeding. The design is effortless, clean crisp and perfect. I believe its been closed for while, covid but just recently opened back up. The orchid restaurant, amazing place for dinner. I was very excited for my 4 night stay at the Halekulani. There are so many great things about this resort but a couple things that I felt just slightly let down by. The great: the Aloha spirit is alive and well among every employee we engaged with. Friendly, accommodating but reserved. Our partial ocean view suite was upgraded to a full ocean view. The room has a lot of great amenities and housekeeping did a fabulous job throughout our stay. The so-so: I've stayed at other high end Oahu resorts before, including the Kahala so I was kind of expecting our check in to be a little more "special". When we stayed at the Kahala we were welcomed with fresh juice, a warm hand towel and a lei. Even lesser hotels welcomed us in a fashion close to this. The Halekulani does NONE of this. That made me a little sad, but whatever. Secondly, there is apparently a strict dress code detailed on the website and in our welcome brochure but wasn't really the case. I feel like I rushed to buy the hubby a whole new resort wardrobe for nothing. Orchids was a little underwhelming and vibe felt way too stiff for breakfast. The gift shop is ridiculously overpriced. I wanted a couple of towels. They were $120 each. Even though I could afford them, I opted for the ABC store across the street instead. We loved the pool and the guys working there were phenomenal despite being short staffed. Best Mai Tai's of our trip! Bell staff were fantastic! Once again, our housekeeping staff was on point. We did however, like the Halekulani enough to possibly stay there again. The good definitely outweighed anything negative. For $750/night I just expected just a *little* bit more luxe treatment. read more

It was my mom's bday on the 11th so I decided to treat her to a staycation at halekulani. We booked with the kamaaina and I got the diamond head oceanfront view room. Definitely was still pricey, 2 nights came out to about $2000 something but it was worth it. The view was so nice and the atmosphere in the hotel in general was super relaxing. Kamaaina also get free self or valet parking which was nice because hotel parking itself is already super expensive. I definitely would like to stay here again. read more

Went here for a birthday party, the service was top notch, I wish I got the older lady server name because she was very welcoming, hard working and super professional. Had a really nice stay here overall. Service is good to very good in most instances. Rooms are larger for waikiki and have large bathrooms with tubs as well as bidets. The service staff at the pool were friendly and helpful. There was always ample seating at the pool but there is no beach chair service and a small but pretty public beach access. I loved that it's on Amex's Fine Hotels and Resorts which allows for a 4pm guaranteed late checkout. They also have a hospitality room you can use, which I tried as I wanted to stay at the pool longer and it was clean and nicely equipped. A couple suggestions for the hotel. I would recommend upping the game on the check in - the Kahala offers a much more welcome check in, including lei's. The check in desk was staffed fully and 2 associates were open but would not make eye contact for a couple of minutes when I arrived. It felt awkward and a bit unwelcoming. I did receive an early check in with my card benefit, but no room upgrade. She actually just skipped over that benefit rather than addressing it, which also seemed awkward. Breakfast at orchids was good and included with Amex benefit. The waitress was also a bit odd and literally said "yes miss" after every selection (e.g. 8-10 of these in a simple breakfast order). It seemed a little Ala Aubrey Plaza. Lol. The pool food/ House without a Key was good but not at the same level as the Kahala. Room service was great. Don't miss the coconut cake. I'd also recommend some basic concierge services at this level- most 5 star hotels can loan you a basic phone charger if you lose/misplace yours. It was a bit annoying to be told to go to the ABC store for an oft forgotten amenity at a place that is $750/night. read more

have stayed at the Halekulani many times over the past few years but this is my first review. The property is beautiful and a peaceful oasis in the midst of Waikiki. Most, if not all, of the rooms were upgraded during Covid the decor is fresh and serene. The sheets are incredible. The food is excellent at Orchids and cocktails at House without a Key is a must for anyone visiting Honolulu. However, what really distinguishes Halekulani is the exceptional service, so much so that I have become to take it for granted. From the time you arrive the doormen greet and take care of you, the front desk is efficient and friendly, and housekeeping is totally flexible and excellent in all that they do. I would like to share two recent experiences to demonstrate the impeccable service. Earlier this week, I checked out and was nearly to the airport when I realized I had left my ipad. I called the concierge, and Daryce and housekeeping leapt into action. Within minutes they had found the ipad and worked with the bellmen to have a taxi (known to the bellmen) to bring the ipad to me at the airport. This was all accomplished in a seamless fashion within less than an hour! Last month, I stayed at the property and was notified around 9 pm that I had been exposed to Covid earlier in the day. I called the front desk and the manager secured a covid test and consoled me that if I had to isolate they would work with me. Luckily, I tested negative and could depart the next day as planned. I am reminded that there are less expensive places to stay in Waikiki but none can match the exceptional service and true graciousness of the Halekulani. I am a tough grader but highly recommend this lovely property. read more

The best part is that they have a hospitality room that you can use on the day when you check out. The checkout time is noon. However, our flight was 8:45 PM. Therefore, we spent our time at the pool and enjoyed the sunshine. And then, we went to the hospitality room to shower and clean ourselves. It worked out well and made me more relaxed going back home. we left the hotel around 6 PM. If you want the best, this is the Hotel to pick. It is located in the middle of Waikiki; but you feel like spending time at a quiet resort. read more

Nevertheless being at the bar during sunset listening to live Hawaiian music with a hula dancer was pretty amazing. Drinks are quite steep but I guess it's part of being in this awesome atmosphere. After first considering a visit to New York City to celebrate our 30th anniversary, my wife and I decided to go back to where it all began for us: Hawaii. Once we figured that out, I immediately decided to pull out all the stops and treat ourselves to a Diamond Head view room at Halekulani. After 30 years of marital bliss, we earned it -- right? That turned out to be a great decision. We have been to Halekulani many times before, starting in the 1980s, but always for drinks and food on the patio (the House Without a Key) -- never as a hotel guest. Our 30th anniversary stay was magic from beginning to end. First, the room was excellent -- a high floor, close to the ocean, with an expansive view of Diamond Head. First class, with all the amenities you would ever need. We ordered room service mai tais when we first arrived and they were excellent. We also ordered room service breakfast each morning and the food was excellent as well. I especially enjoyed the waiter, who set a table for us on our lanai. Again, first class. Second, the grounds are beautiful. As guests, we were able to use the pool and enjoy more of those great mai tais in our lounge chairs. The pool is large and relaxing -- mostly adults, and well-behaved kids -- and we appreciated the excellent service we received, both from the pool attendant who offered us a prime spot, and from our waiter. Third, the House Without a Key was great as always. We enjoyed mai tais and small plates while soaking up the live Hawaiian music and hula dancer. Magic. A couple rain showers wandered through from time to time, but no worries -- Halekulani has lots of umbrellas available, and the showers don't stay for long. The icing on the cake was the bottle of champagne sent up to our room by the manager on our actual anniversary, before we headed to Orchids for dinner (which was excellent as well). Halekulani is expensive, but this is one of those cases where the accommodations, service, food, drink, and overall vibe make it worth every single penny. This is now the only place we'll stay while in Honolulu/Waikiki in the future. It's that good. Easy 5 stars. read more

Warning- kids are not welcome here- no balls or floats in pools and "loud talking and laughter" considered "excessive noise" at the ONLY pool. It is, apparently, designated a "serenity pool". This isn't an adults only or spa pool (spa isn't even open- treatments in makeshift rooms). Hotel caters to the over 70 American set who complains loudest. It's a shame as they have rooms perfectly designed for families. Per employees who previously worked at Four Seasons-- this is the least family friendly hotel I've ever worked at. If you are an over 70 American- great place for you, but be sure to get dinner reservations a couple months out at they don't hold back tables for guests. Concierge could get tables at most exclusive restaurants in Honolulu, but not at any resort restaurants. read more

After our wedding ceremony was done and we finished taking pictures, we went to the front desk to check into our hotel room. The staff was extremely friendly. They sent someone with us to check into our room. We literally just had time to drop off our things and head out to our wedding reception. As a Kama'aina, I love to stay at 5 star resorts around the island for a one or two night staycation. I waited until the Halekulani reopened to stay here, but had been on the property a few times pre-covid for some corporate events and had previously dined at every restaurant on property with friends. I'm a younger guest (30 years old) and was questioned multiple times by staff if I was staying at the hotel. I think they are used to boomers here. We stayed here on thanksgiving day/night. First and only positive experience is that they allowed early check in. We booked one night (Thursday night) and I knew we had to depart early Friday morning so was determined to get a pool day here. We showed up at 10:30am (expecting to store our luggage with the front desk and use the pool) and they actually had our room ready! I do wish I got the Diamond Head view room instead of just the ocean view. The ocean view pool was still so pretty and loved the generous lanai with a full pool lounger and chair/table combo. Not really sure what they did with their 18 month renovation, since the common areas look exactly the same as when I was there for work events and dinners in 2017-2019. The unit bathrooms are still super outdated with tiling from the 90s. The bedroom part of the unit was actually quite nice and well decorated. I think they still desperately need to renovate the bathrooms. It looks like a grandma's bathroom. For the pool, 1/5 stars for the wait. I immediately went to the pool when we got here (1030am) because I saw one set of loungers open and wanted to reserve them. We ended up waiting over THREE HOURS to sit at the pool. There is NOTHING to do at the hotel during the day. This is more of a hotel than a resort.... we even asked concierge if there was a bar or even coffee shop on property.... he recommended we walk 20 minutes round trip to Island Vintage Coffee Shop. Why would I pay $900 a night to have to leave the property for coffee or alcohol?!?! I live 0.1 miles from two Island Vintage Coffee shops in the Ala Moana area. I'm just thinking, why did I leave my kakaako condo with a resort pool that always has open chairs, plus access to my own espresso machine, alcohol and food, to pay $900 to wait around at the Halekulani and get none of the above. Also, not much is open on property yet. Lewers Lounge is only open Friday and Saturday, and as far as I can tell La Mer and House without a key are still closed for renovation. I ended up having to wander to the Trump Hotel to get a latte. The only way to order alcohol during the day is through the pool seating service which was a 3 hour waitlist. You can't even do it through room service. After three hours I went back to the pool stand and said this was our only day here and this was absurd. Some sweet male employee made it happen because of my complaint and he was so kind and sincere. If it wasn't for him I'd give this place a bad review for ruining the only day of my staycation. Even once we got in our lounge chairs, the service was awful. Our food took 1 hour (we ordered calamari) and we ordered a round of drinks to go which after 30 minutes of waiting we had to tell the new guy (his second day on the job and he was so sweet to us) that we needed to cancel. At Orchids, I booked my reservation two months in advance and on the day the hotel reopened, requesting a good table with a good view. I confirmed multiple times and even stopped by the restaurant around noon to confirm we had a nice table. When we got here they sat us at the worst table in the house. After a 20 minute wait they sat us at another awful table. Not to mention it was a buffet dinner which wasn't mentioned anywhere online. I wanted menu service. My recommendation for the hotel is to get more activities. There was more than enough room on the lawn to add a significant amount of additional chairs for the pool. Get a latte bar! And a regular bar that serves during the daytime! Also there is no hot tub here. Also the room mini bar is empty. Have waiter/bar service on their little patch of beach?! Give leis to guests when they check-in? I live in Hawaii and still appreciate when hotels do that (such as Turtle Bay and Four Seasons). I understand they are probably in phase 1 of their reopening, but their website and emails mention all of these places that are still closed. We ended up not even staying for the night because the whole experience was extremely disappointing. read more

I was completely outraged by the rudeness at this hotel. My friend was getting married here so after the wedding I decided to take a little walk around the property and then walk out to the beach but was stopped by a very rude surfboard worker by the pool area and told me I couldn't go out to the beach unless I was staying at the hotel. I told him I was attending a wedding at the hotel; that I was one of the guest and I just wanted to check out the beach. WTF! My girlfriends family was spending A LOT OF MONEY ON THE WEDDING SND THIS IS THE WAY THEY TREAT THEIR GUESTS. ?!? I did end up telling my friend about the way I was treated and she was very disappointed and was going to talk to someone at the hotel. I will never stay at this hotel after my experience. I usually stay at the Kahala where I'm treated with kindness. I don't recommend this hotel. read more

5 star experience always. This is one of the three hotels I like to stay; the hula show is the very best on the island. If you love Waikiki but don't appreciate the summer crowds, this is the place to be. No kids in the pool screaming, it's peaceful and quiet instead. I know since Covid and opening back up after their remodel, the hula show is only Friday and Saturday evenings right now, and you need reservations for that. We've eaten in the the restaurant while watching it the show, but being up close in the 'outdoor lounge' is much better. If you book a room, know their breakfast buffet is one of the best on the island and well worth the extra bucks. read more

Beautiful hotel. Everything looks renovated, and you feel like you're staying at the cream of the crop (I also may think this because I saw a list of a bunch of celebrities that have stayed here Lolol). We got a full tour of the hotel / our room by the lady who checked us in, which was very personal and a nice touch. There are a bunch of restaurants that we took advantage of located right in the hotel- we loved Orchids for breakfast because its waiter-service and unique options, but House Without a Key's buffet is pretty good too. We also went to Lewer's lounge for a quick burger when we were exhausted from traveling in - which to our pleasant surprise also had jazz music and a romantic, intimate vibe with dim lights. The view from our hotel room was great too- a beautiful balcony and view of the pool and beach, and Diamond Head. I wish there was a light to sit on the balcony at night, but I used the inside light to help shine through the screen door when I wanted to read at night out there. I was also a little sad that the hotel pool closes at 7pm, since most days we were out all day and wouldn't have minded going night swimming. But, the pool chairs are very cool white cushions- there must be tight competition for chairs under umbrellas, because the rest of the chairs are "Naturally shaded" by trees on the lawn if not pool-side. Either way, comfy chairs. One of the most unique things about this hotel was that they leave little gifts with their turn-down service (i.e a shell with a little note inviting us back to the hotel). We also were pleasantly surprised to get an invitation from the general manager and staff to join them for a cocktail reception. They not only had delicious cocktails and amazing service, but they also had little appetizers to snack on (sushi, cheese platter, etc). I felt like I was invited to someone's wedding cocktail hour - except it was just at our hotel! Really nice treat and great to get to know the staff. 4.5 stars We loved our recent stay here. RESERVATION - I made a booking through a credit card concierge after researching their rates on the hotel website. If you have any confusion over ocean front vs ocean view, they explain it clearly on their website. - While the hotel is a bit pricier than its neighboring Marriott properties, it's not that bad, especially when considering the lack of a resort fee, classy ambience, and the view. - I booked an ocean view room (had views of the beach/ocean/pool) with a Sunrise advance purchase prepaid rate. This included breakfast. ROOM - We stayed in room 1037. The room (including the patio) was immaculately clean and furnishings well maintained. I appreciate the light colored decor. We could hear the waves crashing. If you're looking for a modern looking hotel, while their ground floor is pretty modern, the rooms are not. - A highlight of every evening was seeing what turndown service left as a gift. They also left thoughtful things like ziploc bags for packing, cleaner for my glasses, cable organizer, etc. - Our upstairs neighbor sounded like big foot and liked to drag furniture (balcony as the room is carpeted?) in the evening. Good thing I am a heavy sleeper, but it was unexpected. The balconies don't offer much privacy -- one night a neighbor was playing music. - The bathroom shower was a bit tight and we aren't big people. - A Japanese toilet would've been amazing. - The Sheraton had some construction but it didn't bother us. I did ask for a room far from the construction when booking. DINING - I think it helps if you're staying at the hotel, they always asked. Sometimes we were seated before other non-hotel guests. - We ate breakfast at House without a Key every morning. Sometimes it took more time to get seated but it was never crazy. If you're seated under an umbrella or close to it, watch out for the birds. - We had early evening drinks (live music 5:30-8:30pm) and dinner on separate occasions. I recommend going earlier in the evening. We had a late dinner (7:45pm) and it felt dead after the entertainment was done. Also the service was on the colder side despite us celebrating a special occasion. We made a reservation for dinner. We saw Brook Lee (former Miss Universe) and Kanoe Miller perform which was a treat. (More to come in a separate review.) - You can eat the inclusive breakfast at House without a Key (buffet) or at Orchids (set menu of American, Japanese, or Vegetarian). They include tip and tax so you don't have to pay anything! POOL - The lounge chairs with umbrellas and tables in the shade go fast. You are allowed to leave stuff on chairs for meal times. If you're staying in a suite you can reserve. - We were here from Tues to Sat. We dropped in two mornings and only stayed for a few hours. It can be frustrating to see empty reserved chairs or 2 ppl reserving 3 chairs - so go early if it matters to you. - 7:30pm pool closure IS early. I think it is because of its proximity to House without a Key? SPA - The entrance is at the end of the driveway. Their rooms run at the back of the lawn (with chairs). - They seem to get booked up, so book ahead. More to come in a separate review. LOCATION - There is no hustle bustle of Waikiki here. We enjoyed the calm ambience, and the busy Waikiki areas are a short walk. (If you don't want to walk on sand, you can get to the Sheraton and then Royal Hawaiian/Moana by going through the Sheraton side door.) - There is barely a beach. There is no public beach access but with a room key you can access a gate and walk on the public walkway. - Honolulu traffic is bad so we had to plan ahead whenever we wanted to go anywhere outside of walking distance. Ubers were easy. OTHER - This is a Japanese owned hotel so there are many Japanese guests/staff who speak Japanese. - If you are staying on a Wednesday, there is a manager's reception off of the lawn with live music, cocktails, and hors d'oeuvres. - They have an interesting sounding Back of the House tour on Fridays at 10am. Sadly there is a limit of 6 people so we didn't make the cut. - We had a rental car for part of our stay. Self parking and valet is the same price, so we did valet and our car never took long. They offer chilled bottled water and beach towels for you to take, and are also great about disposing of this from your car when you return from a long day. - While there were kids present, they were well behaved. This hotel's lobby felt a lot more calm than the Marriott properties nearby. - Service was great and unobtrusive. From Justin who checked us in and walked us around some amenities to our room, to the diligent valets and the pool attendants. We were celebrating an occasion and they sent up a gift shortly after we checked in. - There are only two elevators (we stayed above the lobby) and they were sometimes reallyyyy slow. - There is a hospitality suite available if you get in before your room is ready or you're flying out late. read more

There food is wonderful but at the pool they are fun police. They don't let you throw your balls in the pool also my hotel room had black hair and dirt in the bed also there was sewage problems. The pool sever was very rude I don't want to be a Karen and all but this hotel is lovely but there are big issues Thank you! read more

Aloha! My family and I had the pleasure of eating at the restaurant last night. However, my sons meal was wrong! The waiter told us that he had hit the wrong button and Apollo fixed. We wanted to eat together, not wait an additional 20 minutes for the meal. We were annoyed, of course. The waiter finally came back with the meal and offered no apology whatsoever! We were not asking to have his meal removed from the bill. However , it would have been appropriate for them to offer this! They did not!! They were arrogant and unapologetic! F them!!! We would NEVER eat there again. How were our meals? So so!! Tommy Bahama was much more enjoyable!! read more

It is my pleasure to give this magnificent hotel 5 stars! It has a gorgeous setting on Waikiki Beach, with a beautiful pool and large patio. In the 70s and 80s, it was a small hotel. Now I think it's the best one in Honolulu! **But even if you don't stay at the Halekulani, don't miss cocktails and pupus on their beautiful big beach-side patio before sunset. The patio is called a "House Without a Key". Arrive by 5:00 to get seated. Their cocktails are great! Pupus (appetizers) are very good too. This setting is my favorite place to watch the sunset. They have a Hawaiian trio plus a beautiful Hula dancer. It is so special! Treat yourself at least one time to come here for the sunset, while you're in Honolulu! Don't miss it! read more

If one could give 100* - this is where I would give them ... I am originally from Honolulu and have visited many, many times. I have always wondered about the Halekulani and finally had the chance to stay and solve my curiosity. The Halekulani as an experience is one of the best I have ever had. Impeccable everything. Especially the service. BEYOND. I cannot say enough except, if you can - you must try here. You will feel like you've gone to heaven. No wonder people come back year after year. We went here for a wedding and the ceremony and facilities are gorgeous. The food was okay (but I am not a huge meat eater, not sure if you can gauge this solely from me), the salad dressing was good (oriental one). The reason for the 3 stars is, we tried to book a room here months ago, the receptionist let us know that our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids - ages 11,15) would need two rooms because the capacity for regular rooms are 3 people or she suggested we send one of us to stay in the room of a family member with less than 3 The bathrooms were cool but upstairs near the ballroom was only one stall- the line was crazy and most people had to walk up and down the stairs to use the restroom. The banquet workers were amazing people!!!!! They are mainly the reason for the 3 stars- hard working, on top of it, and humble. read more
