I haven't been here since my last review over 13 years ago. Half Moon is a quintessential New Orleans bar and I feel like you get the real deal experience here with friendly bar flies, all with a good story to tell, and no nonsense but friendly and competent service. In my last review I mention the prevalent cigarette smoke and when I walked in, I swear that I could still smell it. Not sure if that's coming from the back patio or is it just because I always associate this place with that smell! Anyway, count on the drinks being amongst the cheapest in town and the conversations you'll find yourself in to be the most authentic New Orleans. read more

This place caught my eye because of their Turkish Pizza! I've had this yummy dish in Minnesota and this is the first time I've seen it in New Orleans! The owner is Turkish so you know the food is authentic and it did not disappoint! It came out super fresh and super good! And you cannot beat the price of $7.50! We also tried the hummus which was freshly made and came with pita slices. The restaurant is located inside of the bar. You have to walk through the bar to get there but it has it's only seating space. There are a few tables to sit at and you order at the counter. Service: Good service! You order at the counter and the food is brought right to you. Drinks: Plenty of options at the bar! We ordered our beers at the bar and then brought them over to the restaurant. Parking: Street parking. Pets: It seems you can bring dogs into the bar, but I'm not sure about the restaurant. read more

This place was right on the same block as our Airbnb, which meant it was pretty noisy in our rental at night -- but hey, when in Rome, right? We decided to embrace the noise and pop in for a cocktail one evening, and honestly, it was surprisingly chill. The vibe was relaxed, and the bar chairs -- oh man, they were super comfy. Like, "I could sit here for hours and accidentally order five more drinks" comfy. If I lived in the neighborhood, I could totally see this becoming my regular spot. I met a fun person at the bar (always a win), and while the bartender wasn't exactly the life of the party, they got the job done. Would I go back? Absolutely -- for the chairs alone. A good cocktail and a comfy seat? That's a winning combo in my book. read more

I have been to half moon for a long time in my life and can say that this place has made some changes over the years for the better. The patio being a big example. Came here with some friends after a long day and looking for some food. The bartender was very cool, and beyond helpful! You have to go to the side by the pool tables to order your food, but let me tell you that the food was pretty dope! I ordered the cheese sticks, cheese fries minus queso, and a pizza. All of it and I mean all of it was good! The pizza is pretty good but those cheese fries were the best. Totally worth the stop, give it a try! read more

This place is the best! The food is consistently great and the people are very sweet. They had missed an item last time I ordered (the mozzarella sticks, which are the best I've had anywhere) so this time they included an extra treat with a nice note thanking me for my order, which was such a sweet surprise. Bald bartender served about ten white people infront of me after passing me up multiple times and then told me that it wasn't his problem that he didn't provide me with service. And even after giving him my order he took two different peoples orders after ignoring me like he was trying to prove a point. My first time ordering from here. It has the potential to be good food but EVERYTHING I ordered was over seasoned. I got the bacon burger and an order of wings with Cajun seasoning. The wings were delivered hot and they looked so tasty but once i bit down I had to spit it out there was so much seasoning on them. The burger was edible but was over-seasoned as well. I wanted to like the food bc it was delivered hot and looked soooooo mouth-watering. I just couldn't eat it. read more

This a smoky bar that serves up good drinks. Any bar that allows smoking while serving food automatically gets down graded. if they did either one separately, it would be 4 stars for the bar, and 5 stars for the kitchen. They have a daily drink special, so check out the chalkboard. They have a good kitchen that serves up great food. My current fav is the Northern Philly. The bread is a little crunchier than your usual french bread, but it does the job well of soaking up the juices from the meat, and won't fall apart on you. The bar also hosts a weekly trivia night that I haven't been to in years, so I can't really tell you more about it. read more

I ended up at Half Moon towards the end of a whirlwind bar tour. Having never been here before, I didn't know what to expect. I had only driven by during the day, and you can never get a feel for a bar when it is light out. Others have described this as a dive, but I didn't get that vibe. It could have been that it was very late and the place was kind of dead. There were no pool players and only a few people at the bar. There was a divey moment where two customers started an impromptu dance/argument, but it ended amicably. The bar seemed too well lit to be a dive, but we did drink high life. I guess I am 50/50 on the dive bar/neighborhood bar ratio. I think I will require further study before making a final determination. In summary, high life was reasonable, fairly well lit and may be a dive. read more

I love the bar food at Half Moon. Yummm. This is where my friends and I went after we went and saw Kanye and Jay-Z the weekend before last. I ordered a spicy cajun burger and it was on point (I was also really starving, but I really did enjoy the burger). I didn't really care for the fries. Maybe there were too many of them? Then last weekend, a friend ordered a grilled chicken salad and oh. em. gee. that salad was a beast! And I don't even care for salads. Next time I go to Half Moon, I am definitely getting this salad. Oh and the jalapeno poppers are delicious, as well. :) Beware if you decide to order fries. It's not gonna be a little container of fries. It will be a meal. read more

This is a fantastic dive bar where locals hangout. They used to be dog friendly which was great for trips to the dog park in Coliseum Square - stop in with the pup, grab a beer and go. Now there's a "no dogs allowed" policy. What a shame. Even so, The Half Moon still gets 5 stars in my book because the health inspector forced this new bogus rule upon them; and that my friends is how you know a New Orleans bar is authentic. Fuck the rules. I don't go very often anymore (I no longer live stumbling distance) but every time I'm in the neighborhood I stop in for a cold one. read more

I came in the afternoon. A Tuesday. 3 or 4 others in there. It's a kind of divey place. Darts, couches, pool table. Beer price is good, and they're cold. Probably could have had some sports on ANY of the 4 tvs in front instead of movies and a cooking show, but I digress. Bartender was kind of preoccupied with a regular on the side of the bar. Phone use instructions, lol. It's one of those places where the food side is separate from the bar side, so the bartender doesn't take your order, you go in the back and order, then go pick it up when it's ready. It's not the first bar I've run into like that, and I don't know what the purpose is, but it's inconvenient. I asked the bartender what the food was like, and her response did not inspire confidence. It was, " it's ok, you know bar food. " So I went to the back and looked at the menu and asked the guy what was the best thing on the menu. He said "everything ". Again, not a great response. I asked if the chili was homemade or canned. He said it was canned. At least he was honest. He told me the northern Philly was good, but I pictured thin frozen slabs of pseudo beef. I didn't order. I'm giving 3 stars Cuz I just had a couple of beers, they were cold and cheap. I could see me going back late one night for a few. read more

The place is your favorite local neighborhood bar and restaurant. Everyone seems to know most people by name..... they have pool tables and skeeball!!! The drinks are great!! Burgers and fries are crazy good! I fall off the vegan train because it would be crazy not to in this city, oops. Cheese can be a whole food group to me. Sometimes I then fall off the vegetarian train because this girl needs a big fat cheeseburger every once in awhile. I ordered burgers to go for me and my boyfriend one night and we both died and went to heaven for at least 15 minutes. The only menu I found online was a camera phone pic and I couldn't see that the burgers come with fries so I accidentally ordered an extra order. Great mistake since the fries are so incredible! The portion that comes with the burger is huge but why not have more? The aren't steak fries but they are thick and wonderful. I had the Spicy Cajun burger which is topped with jalapeno, grilled onion, and homemade BBQ sauce. The spice was perfect and it was juicy goodness all the way, but not soggy. I haven't been back since I moved to mid-city and I usually have my burger cravings during gnarly hangovers that would prevent me from driving. But one day I'll be back and it will be amazing. Four of us walked in the door, and before the last person walked in, the bartender SCREAMED at us "put on your mask and show me your Vac card and ID". Literally screamed across the room. Had a nice time coming here this past Sunday after my buddy's wedding! It was a great local bar that was away from all of the madness of Bourbon Street. Ok, I'll admit it. I am now totally biased into thinking that the Half Moon is an awesome place, because I fell for my boyfriend over a game of Scrabble on the patio. Personal life aside, this is a nifty little dive. Granted, it's not the best place for a girl to go by herself, but if you are with a group or a guy, then don't hesitate. I went for trivia one Wednesday night without knowing what the trivia scene was like, when it started, or even where the bar was (thanks, Google Maps). Showed up at 8 PM which is around when sane people commence their trivia games. I found some things to occupy my time in the two hours before trivia began including but not limited to skiball and one of those punching bag arcade games that fratties seem to enjoy. Skiball is well priced at $0.25 so I blew several dollars on trying to break 250 points. Eventually the trivia began. There is obviously a "regular" crowd of trivia players here and they're rather competitive. The questions weren't that great and the topics weren't that engaging. The emcee was a nice guy but he was painfully slow. The game of three rounds and 30 questions went an hour and a half. I wanted to go home to sleep so badly, but I fought the urge, knowing that I might place and win a prize. Well thank god I did... I won a box of candy canes for coming in last place. read more

Half Moon. Late night skeeball tournaments with my buds. Yes! I am not a huge fan of the bar at Half Moon, although the bartenders have always taken good care of me. It's the crowd that gets me wonky. The front is always full of an interesting crowd; some sort of combination of preps and sleezy sketchtoids. I'm not digging on them much. I'll order my drink and head to the back room, where the Wonderful World of Skeeball awaits!! If the universe is against me and someone is playing, I will play pool or head to the back patio with the crew. Yes, there is a back patio that you get to by heading in the direction of the restrooms. It is a nice space, but weird to get into. It doesn't help that you have to push through big ole plastic strips that make you feel like you're headed to a walk-in freezer or car wash. He seemed to be quite the local celebrity and I spent hours discussing pet charities with some of the patrons and bartender, this makes me really happy) - Super friendly bartenders and patrons - lots of tattoos, everywhere, this makes me happy! I even met a dude sitting at the bar who's shop I want to do my tattoo - lots of Pearl Jam playing (I would probably stay in a bar if it was on fire for this reason alone) - CNN on the tv (I'm embarrassed to admit that, but I like to multitask, keep updated on world events while getting wasted) - skee ball (I just want to reiterate they had skee ball in their game room) A friend suggested we come in here on a weekday afternoon, to be honest I was less than interested, but am so in love with this place now! Just a great, chill, total anyone is welcome, dive bar. Seriously, there was such a diverse crowd, it really was a blast. The bar food was bar food you know?
