Stopped in here after striking out at the record store next door. The record section was all I was interested in, and it was a little small, but what they had was great. There was a large amount of used records, and a decent amount of re-releases of some really nice titles. I got some rare old blues recordings on special releases for pretty fair prices. I ended up with 2-3 records, and probably could have found more if I spent more time - I don't think I even looked at the rock section. Staff was friendly, service was quick, store was clean and in good condition. Plenty of free parking in the lot outside. Overall a good experience, I'll definitely stop by again when I'm in the area. read more

We usually bring books & magazines to sell. This time we also brought in dvds, cds & video games. We brought in 6 boxes & received a paltry $61. That wouldn't even cover 1 box of items. We brought in dvds & cds that were fairly recent releases, so it wasn't old garbage that we were trying to get rid of. While we were waiting, I saw the boxed sets of tv series dvds that were exactly what I had brought in to sell. They had $14.99 on them, yet they probably offered me $1. I know they are in business to make money, but it would be nice to treat sellers with respect & not rip us off. Because as we all know, without sellers, they'd be out of business. Had I known they would only be offering us this pittance, I would have taken the dvds & cds next door to Volta Records. I'm sure they would have given us fair compensation. After this trip, we probably won't be stopping by any more. No one wants to feel like they are being cheated! read more

My last experience at half price books was disappointing even though I found a couple of things to add to my gaming collection. You used to be able to how old is seven items for a week now they claim you can only put 5 items on hold This is total bullshit. I have also tried to apply to the place for many years. They must be only open to favoritism when they hire folks As I have put a ton of applications in over the years and not once have, I been called for an interview and yet I see new people there all the time that I have never seen . You must have to know people to be able to be on their staff to me. This would've been one of my dream jobs. They used to actually be open till 11 at one point in time I do think that they need to learn what they can and can't sell some things for there are some prices that they put on certain items That appear to be outrageous Tend to be more of a scalper than a place of deals read more

If you're a book lover or just need a book for school, this is your spot. I often can get stuck in here for hours browsing the shelves and rarely leave with just what I came in for. This week happens to be the coupons with increasing percentage off of your highest price item, tomorrow being 50% off (so guess who's going back?). This is a great way to buy school books or those items you've been eyeing up but didn't wanna drop that much cash. That being said, the prices here are very reasonable and they have nearly every book you could possibly want. I did call ahead to place a book on hold (which they hold for 7 days) and I'm always amazed at how courteous and helpful the staff is. The employees here must truly love their jobs because I've never met an employee at HPB who wasn't like this! The lines can get long during these special coupon events but the lines always move quickly. There are other non-book items throughout the store and make great gifts for all ages (or yourself). A few chairs in the back to sit and browse in more detail and really love that they're open later than most stores because time truly flies when you're here! read more

That place, for me, is Half Priced Books. If I could, without raising a few eyebrows, spend an entire day in here going through all the different assortments of books they have -- I could. There's something for every reader here and, even if you're not an avid reader, you'll find something entertaining. Also, if you're looking for a rare print of a book -- they might have it. I've found some awesome finds at our HPB and am forever grateful. Even if you're not a reader at all, there's probably something you can find here for a better price than a competitor. They have old LP's that work great, electronics marked down, DVDs, video games, textbooks for school, little knickknacks and trinket type of things (Funko Pop, bookmarks, games). Beware though, the prices on books here are marked down fairly cheap. But let me tell you that can be a dangerous thing. I have a growing stack of unread books now! This is a nice place to go when you're searching for a used book or DVD. The selection's pretty good and the store itself is well-organized and well-kept. But for me, the best thing of all is that the employees are consistently friendly and ready to help out. If you have a special request or just want to ask a question, they're wonderful! If you're lucky enough to hit the clearance section when it's just been restocked, you can walk away with a huge bagful of books for next to nothing. Take a look. Half Price Books is great...a fantastic chain where you can find something different in every store you visit. While I'm a fan of checking out local, independent bookstores, I also don't have an expendable budget for books -- meaning HPB is a regular stop for me on weekend errand-running. I have no qualms about purchasing used books -- whether for me or as gifts for others -- and have found some real steals at this location as of late. Example: Season 4 of LOST on Blu-Ray for $8.99??? Yes!!! The clearance section is great as well. If I am really looking for something in particular and I note this location has umpteen copies of said book, I know waiting little more than a month or two will see those copies make their way to clearance...nice! I also like this store more than the location in Brown Deer because finding a parking spot is easy, the staff are usually pretty healthy, and there's not a security guard roaming the aisles (Brown Deer was the first HPB where I encountered this phenomenon) -- harshing your mellow by staring you down as if you're going to steal from a place that's already selling books & media on the cheap. My only gripe is that selling books back never seems to net a good total -- I'd rather just donate 25 books than hope for a whopping $10 (I recognize they cannot take everything and that the price depends on what you have, but still...). The best/worst part about HPB are that you'll often walk out having purchased something you didn't intend to AND you may be tempted to spend upwards of 45 minutes browsing the store...but if that means adding to my literary collection at half the cost, I'm OK with that. read more

This is a really good Half Price Books - we don't stop too often because Brookfield is closer, but when we do I always leave with several items. The Brookfield store might be a little bigger and nicer (they have a few couches near the register for reading) but I personally think the book stock in Greenfield is more varied. On my most recent visit, I scored a book on advertising posters in perfect condition as well as an interesting 1937 "Year in Photos" book from Germany. Both were reasonably priced, and as a bonus everything in the store was an extra 20% off! If you're a music/movies person, Brookfield seems to have more of that available. For years, I was unsure of what exactly this place was....New? Used? Textbooks? Finally went in and was pleasantly surprised to learn that the answer to all of the above was YES!!! Then saw movies, cds and games on the shelves. Whaaaaat? Wow! No matter what subject you are interested in, they have at least one book for it and, if not, they know where to find it. You can also sell your books to the store. You won't get diddly squat for them, but even 1 penny is more than you'd get by simply donating them! I have my usual route: Antique books, quick look at cooking, Epidemiology, Clearance, French History, Travel, Records ( I am still hoping to find an Irma Thomas record), and lastly: Foreign movies. I have found so many amazing finds that I would have otherwise paid more for online, plus the cost of shipping. I love that they don't have terrible books in the clearance section, I had even found books in the clearance section that I intended to buy at their full price! This was my first time going to Half Price Books. I assumed that used books would be cheaper and there are some newer released books I really wanted to read but don't want to pay the price. So, I was excited to check this place out and find some good books to read with good prices. I seek out books with good reviews because honestly, I don't want to waste my time or money on books that the majority disliked. When I walked into Half Prices Books I was prepared with a list of 30 books I'm interested in (I'm a true book lover if you didn't catch that yet). Being a used book store, they don't always have what you want. That's expected and there were many on my list that they did not have. The remaining books that were in stock were overpriced, in my opinion, for a used book. I realized that if the book was in demand or with high reviews, prices were pretty comparable to brand new books that I could buy at a local department or book store. I was feeling pretty discouraged on my search for good deals on books and I ended up leaving empty handed. At the moment, I had no intention of going back. On a positive note, there are many, many books with very reasonable prices in the store. After allowing myself a moment to feel disappointed, I decided to look into some older books that people may not want to read anymore. I will take my list back to the store and give it another shot. After all, the books are constantly rotating and I just may get lucky! read more

Man I love this place! While my reading preferences might not be as diverse as some of you guys (most of my books have pictures and word bubbles), I do read quite a bit and I hate paying $30 for any book. This is why I love Half Price. Books, CD's, game systems, video games, comics, this place has it all, and for cheap! I love to shop for graphic novels here. They have about 1 full shelf packed full of mostly Marvel, but also another shelf with DC and independents. While you might not find the Walking Dead Compendium here, you will find a mix of graphics anywhere from 2 to 20 years back. Everything is well organized and easy to find. If you have trouble, find an employee and they will find it really quick if they have it. Customer service is usually pretty good here, although sometimes the lines at the register can get pretty long, especially during a sale. They don't pay top dollar here for most books or things you decide to sell. I guess that's how they keep the prices down, but instead of selling, just do what I do and when you are finished with a book, just stick it in one of those little free libraries that are popping up all over the place. Make sure to join the mailing list. They send/email you really good coupons every 3-4 months. As far as locations go, I've been to all of the Milwaukee area locations, and this one is better than Brown Deer and right on par with Brookfield. Took 6 big boxes of items in earlier this week. 4 banker boxes of mostly cookbooks, and some CDs, DVDs, and a box of VHS, which were a friend's, so I asked for those to be tallied separately. They took almost an hour to get back to me, and when they called my name, they said I would get $23.00 for all of it. I asked if that included the VHS box, and they said yes. Those were worth $4.50. They said cookbooks don't sell well in tbe summer, but at that point I was so fed up with the wait that I just took it because I didn't feel like reboxing it all to haul home. What a rip-off. I understand they're a business and have to make money, but it seems like I only got about a nickel per item. Never will I sell there again. I'd have been better off donating them to Goodwill and taking the donation receipt. Or even setting the stuff in fire... read more

4 stars for buying experience. Paperbacks are a great price and they often have coupons. The hardcovers are still a little pricey for used books. 2 stars for selling experience. Have tried to sell here multiple times and it is always a rip off. Last time I tried I brought 10, excellent condition, hardcover books from recent years. They offered me $3. I obviously said no. I would rather donate to a good cause then let them make such a huge profit off my books. Just to check, I looked for the books I was selling in the store. 5 of them they had no copies. I absolutely swear by this place. If I ever want to purchase books or movies, this is the first place I check. Their DVDs are guaranteed, so if you have issues just bring it back and swap it out. The books are in great condition, and if they aren't, they're priced accordingly. They have an extensive clearance section of books for around $2.00! They offer every section from self-help to cooking. There are areas to sit and read as well. There are books on tape/cd, blu rays and dvds, records, greeting cards, board games... you name it. I've been to this to this location a few times now. It's very convenient (less than a minute from my work and approximately 5 min from my home), and I almost always leave with something. In addition to selling used books, records, CD's, and DVD's, they also sell brand new editions of these items. On my most recent trip, for example, I purchased a brand new book about the crimes of Jack the Ripper for $3.99. If you are looking to get those books or DVD's out of your house that you are no longer using, you can sell them here. Granted, you won't be independently wealthy from what they'll pay you for them, but it'll put a few bucks in your pocket. I drove down the twirly-whirly streets of Dirty Stallis, passed the alleyways dotted with rummage sale signs, and went past the oceans of early 90's Ford Escort wagons blasting Journey to reach : Greenfield. I recently stopped in at this particular HPB due to : 1. The Exclusive Co is right next door, and it's the only 'local' one my husband and I go to anymore 2. We were looking to browse and kill some time on a recent Saturday, so inside we went 3. Why not? I always find something at HPB. The record selection is a LOT smaller than the Brookfield store, as is their CD selection. However, they did offer some 8-tracks for sale. I've never seen those for sale at the Brookfield store. This particular location seemed to be a little smaller and out of date than the newer Brookfield one but that's ok. I purchased a used DVD of the movie "Bridesmaids," but upon getting it home, there was a big scratch and the case was beat to SHIT. Oh, and it didn't play in our BluRay player. It was just kind of gross. They took it back, no problem. Upon further inspection I'm glad I took it back - the DVD I paid for at HPB was $10.00 and you can get a brand new (wrapped) version from Target for the same price. Additional purchase : The Isley Brothers "Primo Collection 2 CD set" for only $7.00. I shit you not. Also, it was brand new. Interesting tidbit : they have an original "Butcher Cover" Beatles album for sale, for the low low price of $1500.00. Of course, see a sales associate for details, and I'm guessing the coupons you get in the mail wouldn't apply for this particular item. Scored : "My Dad's A Bro," a clearance book that will be going in our White Elephant Christmas Exchange. It was only a buck! Friendly service and staff, well organized, and they seem to have a good selection of any Steven King book ever written. I really like going here and this particular location isn't too far from where I live. I like how I have never once had a bad customer service experience here. They're always more than willing to help me find something in the store (no matter how busy they are) and if they don't have it, they offer to see what store (if any) does have it. Half Price Books is the first place I go when looking for something and it's the first place I recommend to other people when they mention they're looking for a particular book. I also like their wide selection of CDs, DVDs, records, etc. I have purchased several CDs from here and have never had an issue with any of them playing. They've all played excellently when I put them in my CD player in my car on play them on my laptop. I have gone to other book stores where it's like pulling teeth to get anyone to help you and if they don't have what you're looking for and you ask them to see if another one of their stores has that book, they give you dirty looks. read more

The records here can be a little over priced at times. Records that are definitely in $1 bins elsewhere are being sold (or rather NOT SOLD) are marked at $3.99. They do have a pretty great selection of oldies though, you have to dig for it. I do not like that they put the bargain records on the floor so compacted and close together. When flipping through records, you need a few extra inches on the shelves to flip and actually LOOK at the records. So many places don't seem to comprehend that. read more

After you went down the street to Barnes and Noble and died at how expensive everything is, you come here and breath a sigh of relief. If you've never been here before, just go to get a feel of the place on your way to the mall or to lunch. Beware, though, that once you start to walk around, you may find time speeding past you :) -Books, CDs, cassettes, vinyl, Blu-ray discs, DVDs, VHS, T.V. series, movies, magazines, everything. -The prices are more than half-priced the regular. The norm is $7-$10, the most expensive I've seen is $20 for the Beatles Anthology, which on Amazon is $70. -Sometimes the covers of the items are pretty bad but the pages and discs always perform well. This is when "don't judge a book by its cover" has to be enforced. -The sections are organized very well but the aisles can be a bit messy with items lying around. It gives a nice feel, though, because it reminds you of your room with crap lying everywhere. B&N would never let that happen. -The staff are gracious and attentive, always willing to help. The cash registers can be a tad confusing because sometimes a worker will be in the middle of the platform and you don't know which register to go to. read more

For the past 7-8 years of my life, I've managed to make it a weekly Thursday night tradition to travel to various bookstores around the city of Milwaukee to stock up on my usual 1) Interior 2) Design 3) Fashion 4) Architecture 5) Art magazines and coffee table books. New and old. If I like it I will buy it. Since visiting places like People's Co-op, Downtown, and Outward are a quite a trek from my location across town, I've managed to make Half Priced Books a permanent stop. And when you've shopped at Barnes & Noble across the street, immediately it makes you incredibly angry you've spent $40-60 bucks on two books when you can get triple the amount of books you ACTUALLY want at HPB. Each time I've made purchases from HPB, I've come out with something I really like and can't find anywhere else (aside from Amazon) with some money left over in my pocket. Whether it be a book on Frank Lloyd Wright or a retrospect of Giorgio Armani's collections between the years 1980-2000, you're bound to find something interesting you can take home at a bargain. I always feel incredibly fortunate when I find something I don't intend to search for and can afford it. Aside from your usual racks of books, there is also a wide selection of used and new VHS, DVDs, vinyl, tapes, and CDs. Some good stuff if you appreciate the classics or flops. Employees are always friendly and will bargain with you if you're persuasive enough ;) ALSO: Look for half-price sales during the holidays!
