Fun place to go to and hang out. My daughters father plays disc golf and she was looking for a book for him about the "sport." We were having a discussion about if disc golf was considered a sport and one of the employees overheard us and joined our discussion. We all stood around for a good 20 minutes debating our opinions. Always a good time when total strangers take part in a fun and open debate. We concluded our discussion that discus throwing was a popular sport in Greek and Roman athletics... so maybe disc golf is a sport. I didn't see a single book that was overpriced. Some books look newer than others, but that just gives them character and generally makes them cheaper. I'm not from the area but will be back to this bookstore whenever I'm in the neighborhood. I love, love, love Half Price Books! Every time I go into this store, I'm thrilled by their selection of books. From fiction to metaphysical - they have so many books that I'd like to own! For a totally fair price too! This particular location is a little slim on the poetry, but is strong in a lot of the reference books that I enjoy. I could spends hours in this store looking through its selection. Staff is most often than not friendly and not overbearing. The record section is so-so, but I don't visit a book store to purchase vinyl... I only take one star off because my selling process was a bit peculiar. I recognize that I could've asked more about the process rather than make my own assumptions...but I got $2 for 10+ quality, good condition books. The lady before me also was offered $2 for multiple records and books - she did not sell. I should've done the same, because I felt a bit jaded. I'm a book lover! Or hoarder, depending upon your point of view. LOL. So Half Price Books is a nice place for me to browse for some used books. I also have an allergy to molds and dust that tends to limit my time in places like this. My family finds this amusing of course. But, this store isn't too bad on my sinuses and selection is pretty good. Prices are also good and the staff is very helpful. Though admitedly they get busy at times and there are only a few employees who work here. So be patient. Besides Half Priced Books, both the Phoenix and Mesa locations of Bookman's have a nice selection. They also do a big business of buying back your books. The Book Bin over on Via Linda and 90th, though small has a good selection of paperbacks and is family run. A plus in my opinion. So if you like to read, I would add each of these places to your list for a visit. read more

Half Price Books... The name says it all. I often buy children's books for kid's as gift. This location has a nice selection which includes a large amount of clearance books. I have gotten books as cheap as a dollar from this location. The store is always well kept and staffed with friendly associates who are always willing to help. This is a small bookstore that does not have a cafe or seating area. However, you will find a nice selection of books for all age ranges. Along with music, movies and other great finds. They even have programs such as a summer reading program for kids. Teachers need to pick up some good reads for the class? They offer a discount to educators with proof of teaching that will save you 10% off your purchase. Be sure to inquire at the checkout. read more

Located next to Target this book store has a nice selection of both used and heavily discounted new books as well as music, calendars and other fun stuff. This is not like going into one of the big chains where you can sit down drink coffee and read their product. Store is a little small. You may bump into someone if you are spacing out. Just say excuse me and continue enjoying yourself. I love to get my cookbooks here when I am experimenting with a new type of ethnic cuisine. They also have several selections by famous chefs and TV shows that you would see on some of the cable channels. Picked up a Triple "D" cookbook on my last visit. Nice. Today I picked up several books out of the kids section for my new granddaughter. Had to get some Curious George in fact a bunch of them. They were only $1.99 each. These were my favorite as a child. Who doesn't like stories about a Monkey that gets into trouble and his pal The Man in the Yellow Hat. When you get tired of your old books you can trade them in or sell them for cash. Trade in is always a better value and then you can walk out with a fresh batch of reading material in the same visit. They may not have exactly what you are looking for but it is always worth doing a quick pop in to see. You never know what you may score. Ding! Turn the page. read more

This place is an absolute neighborhood treasure!It's conveniently located near the Cactus Target. The inventory is monumental and if they don't have a book you want they'll have it sent over from another store. What I like best is their customer service. I went in with a list of books on my phone, handed it to a lovely young woman who looked the books up on the computer and and yet another terrific young woman pulled them off the shelves for me. If I had looked for all of the books myself I'm sure I would have been there for hours. Everyone is knowledgeable and friendly. Love this second hand bookstore! read more

I love to read ever since I was a kid I could always be found curled up on the sofa or in my bed reading a book, I still love reading but with two kids of my own now buying books at full price isn't always an option I can afford. I don't like kindle books, I rahter have a book in my hand with a nose full of the smell of its pages. Half Price books has been around for quite some time I remember visiting it when I was in middle school, I enjoy visiting here as it is usually very well kept it has a decent amount of traffic but it isn't packed which is nice for when you are just browsing. I went here looking to purchase only one specific book, Sadly they didn't have it but I ended up buying three others anyways. I plan to return soon to hunt down some more books for my collection, the prices are fair but I wouldn't exactly say they were "Half priced" many I've seen appear to be about 25% off price haha but it is still better than paying the price for a brand new book. The books are in great shape, many in like new condition from time to time I will purchase a used book from Amazon I always make sure to get Used - like new or Used - Good but even that is a gamble. I recently purchased two from amazing that said they were "Used- Like new" but turned out to be "Used and Abused" so it is refreshing being able to hold the book in your hand to see the shape it is in Before you purchase it. The store is easy to locate with a well lit parking lot, Staff seemed friendly and mainly kept to themselves which I don't mind as I enjoy looking through books and just exploring on my own. read more

This store does not appear to be prepared for reopening. They have greatly curtailed the hours of operation, and they have also been closed during days they are supposed to be open due "staffing issues." They no longer buy items from the public either. Things are much better here than they were just a few weeks ago. The woman running register greets everyone warmly. You don't get reminded about your shopping time. It looks like whatever changes the company made to management are working. I found 3 of the books I was searching for and a nice young man named Alex found the rest for me on their online service and they are coming right to my house. Things are getting back to normal. Masks are optional which helps if you get a little winded after awhile and just need a moment. read more

Sci-Fi section is appalling. This is where HPB must dump the crappy SciFi books on a national basis. Lots of hardback titles that no one wants to buy. None of the classic authors or classic series. Staff seems nice enough, though I haven't seen anything worth buying so I don't have any interaction with them. I loved the location on Camelback. It had great SciFi. Wish that Mgr would come over and clean up the SciFi at the PV location. Does HPB not evaluate the amount of time a title languishes in a store? Cobwebs (figuratively) are growing on the SciFi books at the PV location. Such a shame to have a book store that misses the mark...best of luck to HPB..... read more

I'll state beforehand that this is an awesome source if you still prefer or need paperback books and you don't want to overpay them. So here I am! When a new organic Chemistry book ranges between $200-300 and a used one is still around $150, guess what comes in handy? Check the cost on Half Price Books and you'll find it MUCH CHEAPER! Indeed I was not disappointed. I called ahead of time to find out if this store on Cactus Rd would carry OChem books but sadly I didn't find the exact one so I placed an order for it. Both over the phone and at the store I was taken cared by Izzie and, as stated before, she provided an excellent customer service. Friendly, professional and prompt, I wish many other stores would take inspiration from her. She placed an online order for my book and informed me of the total price right ahead. The book would be shipped from out of state so I chose an expedited shipping of 3-5 business days for $6. And if, for any reason, it delays you can bring the receipt back to the store for a reimbursement. Guess what I ended up paying for my precious latest edition Chem book + shipping? Only $40 total.!!!!Outstanding...how can you have the same thing for less. When all the others fail (including Amazon and E-bay), Half Price Books still provides a competitive alternative. This is NOT the best place to sell your books. Bookman's will give you a better price on your books. HPB will give you very little and then offer to take the "rejects" to donate or dispose. After lugging in your heavy boxes, most people will say yes. Then you "rejected" books wind up in the back of the store in the Clearance Section. Pretty sneaky huh? But even knowing this, I have been shopping at the Cactus store for ten years, because I like to peruse the Clearance Section for books and movies. But - I will never shop there again - because yesterday I saw that the Clearance Section was completely changed! It no longer is sectioned by topics. Everything is put on the shelf under Fiction or Non-Fiction. What? So if you are looking for cookbooks, they are all mixed in with auto repair, hypnosis, art, magic, math study. It is impossible to find anything!! I don't have the time to weed through that mess. I don't get why they did it, but they just lost my business. read more

First time visiting and upon entrance, I regretted not having the collection of CDs and DVDs to donate with me, but after receiving $13 Half Price offered for the 30 books* I brought in (that's 43 cents per book), I will not come back to sell anything else. I was going to leave the books at work so that fellow readers could get enjoyment from them. That thought gives me greater pleasure than the $13 in my hand. (Changing Hands gave me $11 for four books just four days ago.) Most of the books I brought had binds that weren't even broken- some were even brand-new! I should've just taken them back. *Some of the brand-new titles I brought in: Culture Shock! (three editions- Britain, Philippines, Australia); Sara Gruen's Water For Elephants; Lahaye/Jenkins' Left Behind; Tim Lahaye's Revelations Unveiled; Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient; Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon; Lisa See's Dreams of Joy (hardback); and many more that were in very good condition. read more

I always forget about Half Price Books until I am in the area... today was no exception. I was on my way to Barnes and Noble or Borders (whatever is across the street) when I remembered about Half Price! They did not have the book I was looking for (Skinny Bitch) but I did pick up five other books relevant to what I was looking for and my total was $4.98. Yes, that is right, I got FIVE BOOKS for FIVE DOLLARS. With tax! They have an excellent selection, excellent prices, the store is very clean and organized and overall a fantastic book store! read more

The book continues to live on! I love books. There's just something wonderful about holding a real book in your hand while you flip through the pages and enter a different world. Sadly, the tangible book seems to be over taken by the world of electronics, but luckily shops like Half Price Books keeps the book alive. This shop is full of used books at reasonable prices, as well as DVDs, VHS (I kid you not) and other electronics and paper products. The best part is that they also buy your old books! Will you get a lot of money for them? No way. Sadly, you get about what feels like 1/10 of what you paid for it, but at least they buy them back at all! If you decide to sell your books, they will give you a coupon that's good for 10% off your purchase! I stopped in on a whim. I'm from the DFW area of Texas. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they had way more books on various Pueblo peoples. I got about $70 worth of books for $19. For those whining about price, you do understand supply and demand right. They've been at this for a day or so so they know how to price merchandise based upon current market demands. Ali fb that line, of what you bring through the door isn't in demand, why should they give you big dollars for it. Just because I am interested in American Indian cultures before the white man came here doesn't mean you are. You won't ever buy those books like I do. That means I get mine cheaper and they'll be practically worthless if I ever want to sell them back to HPB. Half Price Books is way over rated. (1) Has a lot of old, mangled paperbacks, mostly romance, (2) Current and best sellers are meager, probably picked over by the staff, (3) Bring in a current or best seller to sell and if you get a penny on the dollar, you're lucky. You would be better served to donate your books to Good Will and taking the tax deduction. I used to go to this store a lot, but when they opened their Camelback location, it sure seems the way they financed it was to rip you off on the amount offered to buy your books and the quality of books in-store went way down hill. My father-in-law had run in to the same problems, he being also a prolific reader, and he has quit going to Half Price Books. read more

I enjoy coming here when looking for a specific title, and also for browsing. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the employees are friendly and helpful. It can be hit and miss on finding a specific, needed title. I almost always check here before heading to Border's across the street, if I must have a specific book immediately (think student required reading). BUT if you are looking for something in a specific genre, and want to browse, this is your place. My kids can easily spend 60-90 minutes here, and after about 20 minutes are usually reading something in a well-positioned chair. THIS IS ONE of my favorite things about this store; you feel very comfortable "hanging out"- reading a book, wandering amongst the shelves for a couple hours even. I like to pick up small presents here- they have nice selection of note cards, journals, oddball new books, and more. Staff is friendly. If you ask them what good finds there are in the store, or for their opinion in general, you will receive great information and interesting discourse. YOU WILL NOT get much selling your used CDs, DVDs, or books here. The amount they pay for your items is absurdly low. I don't expect to get rich off of resale, but it's ridiculous how LITTLE they will offer you. Bookman's is a much better value for the person who wants to trade in their items. Perhaps HalfPrice Books would do well to offer a tiered trade in program. If they do not wish to part with their "cash money"- continue offering a pittance in cash, but provide a more generous store credit option in addition. read more

I was really sad when Borders had closed. I remembered a used bookstore being close to Target, but I had never ventured inside, until recently, when I was looking for some gardening books. Then I became sad again, but it was because of how long it had taken me to find this place AND that I had been paying Borders prices for years when this place was only a hop, skip, and a jump away. Ugh, dummy! Anyway, this place has about every book category you would find at Barnes and Noble, plus audio books, VHS, DVD's, Blue Ray, Records, CDs, Computer software, video games, and little knick-knacks that look fun to purchase, but are utterly useless. I noticed the complete Band of Brothers collection on DVD for $20, single DVDs range from $6-$10, and Blue Rays from $12-20. Some where still in their cellophane wrapping, while others showed some wear. I was a little nostalgic when I saw they had Game Boy and Super Nintendo game cartridges ( I didn't see any original Nintendo games)! The staff was very friendly and I spent about 45 minutes in the store browsing the different sections and reading from various books. There was a coffee and hot chocolate station that I did not take advantage of because I was scared I would have stayed there for hours. From now on I will bee checking out this store first when I need to purchase a book for their discounted prices without the used book store smell! read more

This place ROCKS! Went here looking for a specific book for my daughter's project and found everything under the sun except the one book I was looking for. That was, until the extremely helpful staff stepped in. He not only searched the shelves with us for several minutes, but also checked the computer and found they had just taken a copy in the day before. Even though it wasn't where it should have been, he searched until he found it buried on a cart in the back. That's what I call "customer service" and just another reason why I like to buy my books from here. read more

Half Price bookstore (HPB) is a great bookstore. Of course, it's not for everyone. You have to know what you want. HPB is a commercial chain bookstore, profit is it's main, probably the only goal. If you want to sell your books, go to some place elsewhere. The best way is to sell the valuable books yourself on-line, and donate other books. If you want to find local bookstores that are not only just bookstores, but also serve like small community center, hold reading/signing events, etc., go to some other places. If you want to buy new or hard-to-find expensive books to make your collection complete, go to some other places. But if you are looking for general used books, I mean, published in last 10 years, or 20 years, which will normally cost you around $5-$10, and you are not in a hurry. Then HPB is the place. If you are looking for books that you can find on-line for $.01, like the paper-back best sellers, but the $4 shipping can kill the deal since you are not really sure whether it is your type of book, and you know HPB might sell these books for just $1-2. Then HPB is the place. If you are not expected to hit a jackpot, but just want to give yourself some surprise, like to some unexpected small finding which won't cost you a fortune, but can make you a day, then HPB is the place. Yes, HPB is for casual book searching, and you can always find some surprise. The clearance area is always full of surprise. Since the store is keep put new-arrivals onto the shelf, older books have to give away, especially if there are multiple copies. Thus you can find books on the shelf with one higher price, yet the same book in clearance for a very cheap price (which will be gone quickly). HPB is a book heaven, especially you share more than one purpose mentioned above: you are not looking for specific books, but an avid reader and regular buyer so you have very good idea on which book/writer is good for you, how expensive those books can be, and you are a frequent customer, then HPB is like a goldmine to you for dig. Of course, different HPBs are different in their styles. I found this book store is the best for general books, especially children's book and comics. I also like the superstation one for it's record selection. I haven't find specific attractions for me at Camelback bookstore, also I do find some gems from time to time at every HPB. read more

I enjoy shopping here as a buyer, but forget selling books or magazines. The last time I sold books and magazines, I managed to get a $1.00 store credit for over forty magazines and periodicals. I was pissed off to say the least. They told me that most of the magazines were older and would probably have to been discarded, or recycled. Luckily, I was looking for a copy of Monocle magazine and to my relief found one and used up my $1.00 credit immediately (I still owed sales tax - :() Last weekend I found a create Marvel comics DVD games new for only $3.00. My son loves it - well worth the money. I tend to look for some international and hard to find magazines. I do find them once in a while. Last weekend, I discovered the comic clearance bin. A great find. Comics for $0.25. I did not start reading comics until I was over forty, so it is an affordable hobby at this price. This review is solely based on my experience selling my collection of books. Because Half Priced Books falls into the same category as a pawn shop since they hand out cash in exchange for goods, you have to have a government issued ID. Ok so fine, that's their policy by law, I get that. Unfortunately I didn't know this going in to sell my books last week. My husband still had my ID from the night before when we attended his work holiday party. After lugging my myriad of books from the car into the store with my 3yr old in tow, I was met with an unapologetic male employee who said that without my ID he couldn't even keep my books there for an hour while I ran up to Troon to fetch my ID. Begrudgingly he agreed to ask the manager if they could hold my books while I got my ID from my hubby. They acted like it was the biggest deal ever that my large box of books was going to take up valuable realest in their completely empty store. The pretentious employee returned saying that the manager must be in a good mood as he agreed to allow me the tremendous honor of not making me bring all of my books back into my trunk. But he stressed that I had an hour, and no more, to run up to Alma School and Happy Valley to get my ID and come back to their store. Overtly rude! I grabbed my little one and off we raced. By some miracle I made it back within the hour and they couldn't have cared less. In fact they weren't completely done pricing my books. And by the way, this ordeal only landed me $16. So not worth the stress on me or my son! So finally I'm waiting in line to get my $16 and the same jerk employee decides to complain to me about his morning and how he hasn't had lunch yet. Seriously dude? You just made me run across town for $16 and you think I want to hear about your morning!? They can keep their singles- from now on I will go elsewhere to sell my books. Total lack in customer service! read more

Be sure to allow an absolute minimum of one hour for this store. Its treasures are sunken deep within the piles and piles of literature, media, and miscellaneous items that you may not need but will purchase because they are so freaking cheap. You may at some point end up on a stool somewhere with your morning coffee paging through a Swedish phrase book and finally look up to see the sun setting. You can plop down in any corner of the store and page through an unlimited number of random books you'd never think you'd find interesting or that you maybe thought would be a lot cooler than they turn out to be and so will luckily never buy. In many cases I find things that I may not read, but damn $2 sounded like a good idea when I was in the Half Price time-warp-induced stupor. Did I really think I'd read 100 Questions You Should Be Asking About Your Personal Finances? Well, another man's garbage is...another woman's coaster. Still a good deal! The DVD collection is awesome as well and usually worth the patience of scanning through each shelf. $3 copy of Big Trouble in Little China. Enough said. You probably won't get much compensation when you try to sell books back here, but you'd be getting rid of them anyway so you might as well reap the 50 cents and put it toward your next purchase. I came here yesterday for the first time and I had a positive experience. My experience will be different than most others, due to COVID-19. The store operated smoothly and the staff were extremely helpful, and very kind. When I arrived, the store was allowing XX amount of people in at 30 minute intervals. They had a minor line outside, but moved quickly. What I enjoyed about this bookstore, is the fact that they do have a good selection of books. It ranges from kids to history to religion as well as others. They even sell some stationary. If the store does not have books you are looking for, you can also go online to buy it. But the downfall to buying it online is the shipping price. The books in the store can range in pricing, but I feel like it is reasonable for it. I got a couple good books for $3.00 while others up to $8.99. The books are all in great condition. On a side note, I am not sure how this works, but they do take books if you want to give them your used books. Not sure what their protocol is, when you give them your books that you no longer want. But I will definitely will be doing that when I come across books that I no long net read. Overall, go here for your books. read more

Terrific place to buy or sell books. As someone currently in the middle of moving I felt guilty donating all my books to goodwill and sought after somewhere locally to sell them. Luckily, Half Price Books was less than three miles away from my house so I thought it would be worth the effort to collect my various books in a box and bring them in to be appraised. Much to my surprise, the selling process was quite simple and all that was needed was a valid ID and 15 minutes of my time. I truly did not expect to get much for my books, but walked away happily with $15. Half Price Books also does the courtesy of donating the books they are unable to buy. In my opinion, this is nice so that you don't have to carry them back to your car or even a different donation center. Overall a great experience and I recommend it to anyone looking to do some spring cleaning with their novels. read more
