From friends who showed up, to the strangers who stopped by, today was filled with moments I'll never forget. One wonderful woman purchased Don't Be a Stranger to reflect on her many years inspiring young minds as a teacher. One gentleman chose Don't Be a Stranger to Grief, as he continues to grieve the loss of his late wife. Every conversation was a reminder of why I wrote these books in the first place. All of this was made possible by the incredible staff and management of the 90th St and Shea Barnes & Noble. At the end of the day, Ukiah, one of the wonderful Barnes & Noble booksellers, came over to share such kind sentiments and support for my recent book launch, Don't Be a Stranger to Difficult Conversations. A huge debt of gratitude to the Barnes & Noble staff who do kindly update me today! What a blessing! Management was incredible to work with! When we arrived, I realized I remembered this spot from when I was a kid, I just hadn't been back since I was younger. This spot is absolutely STUFFED with books, comic books, VHS tapes and more. You could spend quite a long time wandering around looking at all of the books they have to offer. It can be slightly overwhelming especially if you are looking for something specific as there wasn't really any clear guidance on where to find certain sections. We still had a lot of fun though wandering around and seeing what we could find. If you are looking for the prices, they are written in pencil on the inside of the books. You can find a mixture of mostly used books along with some new books. They have a cute shop cat that you can sometimes spot wandering around, or asleep at the front. The woman who was working the register the day we visited was friendly! They also had a cart out-front with a number of books that were free to grab. There is plenty of parking out-front.

Once I was got to the store, I had to explore. I think that if one were to regularly visit Books, he/she would find some rare editions and other gems. Also, they had what looked like reproductions of banned book announcements posted around the store: all were of classic novels that we can't imagine not having access to as students. (See photos: Charlotte's Web, Huck Finn, Fahrenheit 451...) They were quite entertaining, in a disturbing way. They had the effect of making me feel so grateful that past efforts of censorship in the US had failed. In 2024, this is still a real threat. Tiny stores like this one are real treasures. Let's keep them in business.

They disassembled my phone and then told me it had a specific problem that would require additional repair and expense around $500-$600. Thankfully, I did not authorize the additional work. I took the phone to a different repair company for a second opinion, and they were able to physically verify that what I had been told by this company was not true. This wasn't a difference of opinion between two technicians or an uncertain diagnosis. The second company was able to show me physical evidence that directly contradicted what I had been told and that is what makes this experience so upsetting. I can understand paying a diagnostic fee when a technician spends time investigating a problem and simply gets the diagnosis wrong. What I cannot accept is being given information about the physical condition of my device that was demonstrably false and would have resulted in me spending additional money had I trusted them. After discovering this, I contacted the company and requested that my $55 diagnostic fee be refunded. They have refused. Supposedly it was elevated to the district manager who also clearly allows for their employees to lie and steal money from customers apparently. I had to call 4 days in a row to get any kind of response from them, even a crappy one, even though every time I called they said someone would call me back... So, to summarize: I paid $55 for my phone to be disassembled, was given a diagnosis that another professional subsequently proved was false, was potentially going to spend additional money based on that information, and the company now believes it is appropriate to keep my $55 because they spent time providing that "diagnosis." I find the entire experience incredibly frustrating and, more importantly, it has completely destroyed my trust in this business and I will be telling everyone to stay clear of this dishonest place and I hope you choose to do the same. When someone hands over an expensive device for repair, they are relying on the technician's expertise and honesty because most customers have no way of independently verifying what they're being told.

In fact, to be honest, Target is probably my wife's favorite store, and it's where she goes to just go for a walk, occasionally picking up groceries, finding gifts for people, and even picking up something for herself every now and then. It's sometimes scary to see what she comes up with. Even so, this Target store is easy to maneuver, has a great selection and sales, usually has items in stock, and has helpful associates. Besides the store itself, it is easy to use the app to see what promotions there are, to earn Target Circle rewards, and to keep track of what we purchase. Speaking of Target Circle, it's a free program (https://www.target.com/l/target-circle/-/N-pzno9) where you can receive personalized and automatically applied deals, earn rewards to save and spend, and even receive discounts for verified military, college students, and teachers. You can even unlock added value by getting a Target Circle credit card or paying for a Target Circle 360 premium membership both with many more benefits of their own. You can find out more about the Paradise Valley store at https://www.target.com/sl/paradise-valley/233. It is open daily from 8 AM to 10 PM. There are separate hours for Target Optical, CVS Pharmacy, AT&T and prepaid cell phone activations, Starbucks, and when beer and wine are available. This store offers all of this plus fresh grocery and Ulta Beauty Target. It also offers order pickup, drive-up, and same-day delivery. I know now that the holidays are over, it's only a matter of time before I do some more major spending at Target. But one piece of advice...don't randomly wear khakis and a red polo or other customers will come up to you thinking you work there. Yes, it has happened to me once before, and I sure learned from that experience (though I actually think I knew where the items were that they were looking for).
