I found an old book at a thrift store that was signed by the author and numbered, a limited edition 1 of 500. I brought it to Half Price books to see what it was worth, and being the trusting person I am I believed the young man at the "buy" counter that it was worthless but they would give me a $1 for the trouble of bringing it in. I figured I might as well take the dollar and put it towards something I wanted to read. I frequent the store a lot so the next week when I came in I was surprised to see my supposedly worthless book in their glass, rare book display case for $75. About a few weeks after that it was gone, I assume someone bought it. I asked to talk to the manager about this and the manager said they have different employees pricing the items than the ones buying the items so it was totally possible for one employee to believe the book was worthless and another to see it was worth $75. I suppose that is possible, but also hard to believe. A good manager at that point should have offered me some compensation for the "mistake" and I would have remained a loyal customer but instead I drive further to go to Bookmans where I feel they are fairer with their offers. read more

Their "internal" system supposedly tracks how long it takes for an item to sell and at what price point it's in the market. Sophisticated! They don't give you hardly anything back for your books. The general rule is at least 30% of what it stands in market. They definitely do not give you that. Maybe 5%. Not worth it. read more

This is my 'go to spot' for books, especially the bargain priced children's books. I have bought many for gifts. The selection is always good. I have also bought hard to find books online. Delivery is within a few days. I generally leave the store with more books than I planned to buy. On my last visit, I also bought their book bag - bib*li*o*ma*ni*ac - for $1. My biggest problem is with donating/selling my books. It's like parting with good friends. If you have not been to Half Price Books - 'try it; you'll like it '. The staff is very helpful. read more

Great used book!!! A wide selection and friendly staff!!! I collect first editions and many are shelved in the general fiction area with most other books. Take your time and find some treasure! NEVER sell anything to this place, they will rip you off. They will give you 1$ for a hardback book and sell the same one for 20$ the next day. Try Zia record exchange when selling dvds, much more fair and honest. read more

I've never written a yelp review and this review is actually why I created my account (even though it happened a while ago). I'm a long time customer of Half Price Books in Texas and today was my first time into the paradise valley store in Arizona. For the record, it seemed clean and as organized as any other half price and most of the employees were very helpful and friendly, a great store all together. That's the reason for the two the stars, otherwise I would have only given one. But...I had one of the most uncomfortable situations with one of their employees. You might think I'm too sensitive after hearing it, but I legit made me super uncomfortable and weirded out. I had just walked up to the counter to pay, it was pretty busy at the time and a third cashier had stepped up. She smiled down her glasses at me without saying anything and I hesitantly approached. After what felt like hours of weird, slightly creepy, scripted interest in my life (way more strange and structured than normal customer service stuff, think:"I'm soooo sorry you're having a bad day, is there anything I can do to make it better?" said in a weird, high pitched, sing-songy yet structured way that didn't even sound like a real question after I just said "it's ok" to her question about my day; also a bunch of weird "awwwww" sounds over and over again to almost everything I said, yuck) Then, if her weird presence wasn't hard enough to handle, she asked me for a high five...I am NOT ok with touching strangers, but I felt really pressured into giving her this high five because she just stood there with that vapid grin staring at me down her nose with her hand cupped (I'm not kidding) in the air. I had noticed her hugging and touching a bunch of other people who I assume were other employees (pretty unprofessional in my eyes) and I didn't want to share in the experience, but like I said, I felt pretty pressured. I ended up giving her gross, sweaty palm the high five and I still regret it. To be pushed to make physical contact with an employee, even if it is slight, is so wrong. She creeped me out and I don't know if I'd go back to the store there because of her. Well, maybe I would but I'd do anything possible, like dodging behind stacks or turning and running to avoid having to interact with her again. read more

I love going to Half Price Books. They have a huge selection of books at, you guessed it, half price! You can truly get great books for cheap here, and they do even have a clearance section where books are $1-2...my dream come true! You can also get recent books, so it's not like one of those places that only carry books from 1980 and under. You're very likely to find bestsellers here for much, much less than you could get them anywhere else. They also sell CD's, DVD's and other non-book related items. And if you have some books you want to sell, they do give you that option here as well. Keep in mind that you won't get anywhere near what you paid for the book originally, but you'll get a fraction of the cost of the book. read more

Not a great place to sell. The wait for a trade-in offer can be excruciatingly long, weighed down with the anticipation that you know you're going to get screwed on what they'll pay you. Most of my experiences there have shown the employees to be either a touch condescending, or too frightening to approach due to their trying-too-hard to be rebellious appearance and/or persona. 3 stars for their excellent military and world history section, though. read more

I use to shop here all the time when i lived close by. Its a smaller book store but you can find books at some of the best prices in town. I often have payed just one dollar for books by great authors. If you love books and like them cheap this is a place to check out. read more

Half Price Books is very similar to Bookman's except that they do not give you credit - they give you cold, hard cash. Who doesn't love cash? We recently moved and had a lot of entertainment items we no longer needed/wanted. I decided to try Half Price Books and was pleasantly surprised. They mainly carry books (a whole lotta books) but have some movies, music and very little video games. Their selection is eclectic and random. A lot of newer items too. When you bring items to buy back, you give your name and must stay in the store while they go through your items. This gives you plenty of time to wander. As I said, they have a lot of books. The movies were a good selection of newer items and had plenty of DVDs, Blu-Rays, and even VHS. The video game selection is rather dismal - only a few Wii, PS3, Xbox, DS, and even SNES games. (A few PC games as well.) Bookman's definitely has them beat in this department. Overall, it was a good experience and I'd go here again. Definitely a great place to find something for a friend/family member as well. read more

I love Half Price Books! The store is much more small and intimate than most large scale bookstores in Phoenix. The store reminds me of a personal library someone put together rather than a place aimed at selling selling selling. Most the books Half Price sells are used, but they sell new books as well. They also sell movies, Cd's, records and magazines. I used to come to half price books when I was on lunch breaks from Target (first job) and just relax in the quiet store. As far as selling your books goes, I sold some books here once but I didn't think I got back as much as I should have. Half Price offers some really great books at great prices so whether you are looking for some great deals or want a unique book for a gift try Half Price! read more

True story (and I hope someone from HBP sees this): I walk in the story today and ask the clerk for any books about celiac disease. She gives me a blank stare like it's a new band she hasn't heard of. "It's a dietary condition where you can't eat wheat or gluten, you know that gluten-free thing?" It still doesn't register. No light bulb. I volunteer a suggestion: "The health section?" She refers me to the cookbooks. Seriously. I'm not making this up. Considering the number of restaurants that now have gluten-free options, I would recommend - other than buying some of their staff a clue - having a "celiac" book descriptor somewhere in the shelves. It's nearly impossible to find a book about celiac (and I'm pretty sure there *are* books about celiac) in HBP. Not the best place to go if you're looking for non-fiction books about celiac: lights on, but nobody home. read more

This store is my new obsession. I go to the one by Target in Paradise Valley. I can spend an hour in there, just browsing. My daughter has just started reading chapter books, so I went there to look for her, since the libraries around us suck. I found great paperbacks, including the Ramona books from when I was a kid, for around 1.98 a piece. Great store with great selection. read more

I needed a book that specialized in fitness and I wasn't sure if they would have it. I called and the person that answered helped me quickly and found the book there and it was only $10. It was in perfect condition and I was really pleased. Plus they have a cool unique selection of lots of different items. Good local business, I will go back. read more

Kurt, Gideon, and Joe are awesome. I can't guarantee this for every customer, but they were willing to bargain with me on a collectors item. Located in a shopping plaza between a Target and a dollar store, and a couple streets down from the mall, so expect typical area traffic. The store seems a bit more compacted than the other two locations, but that's just maybe due to volume per square footage. Or it just means more people need to buy books and read! read more

I came in looking for a couple of books for my summer reading list, and I found them within 20 minutes! I love being greeted right as I walk in and they did that (it's surprising how many places don't do that), I was also hoping that the books would be organized and thankfully they were. I love this bookstore, good selection and prices that rock if your a buyer. The place is kind of small, but well organized, and the staff will go out of their way to help you find what your looking for, even calling another store in the area to make sure they have the book your looking for. I would love to be able to come to this place surrounded by the smell of books and write for several hours. But they do not have Internet access or even a place to sit and read. That would be the down side of this place. But, the upside is great customer service, selection, prices, and clean. read more

I went there today for the first time ever and was treated very rudely. They had protocols in place for COVID (which is good). But they said we had 30 minutes to browse. So I go with my GF and at one point I ask a young woman working if they come and get you when your time is up, just to be courteous so i know. Instead she goes and tells the lady managing the door, and comes back to report my time is "basically" over and I have to leave.... Ok so that tells me next time not to ask. So i pay for 3 books. I wait for my girlfriend outside. It's summer in AZ. After a few minutes i try to come back inside now that there is no line, right after seeing someone walk in. I open the door and the white woman who obviously saw me come inside, acted like i was a homeless person off the street busting into the store. Another from behind the counter also jumped up and glared at me from behind the counter, same woman who rang me up... The one guarding the door immediately yelled I could not come in, even though there was NO LINE, she said they were at capacity, even though i was literally inside 5 minutes ago... Luckily my girlfriend was coming out right has that experience ended, but it was extremely rude and unprofessional for it being my first experience. I know they must not see many brown skinned fellows there, but there's no need to tell a paying customer I cannot come inside an empty store with no line. Absolutely ridiculous. read more

I heart Half Price... and I'm also excited they recently opened a new location on East Camelback-- the PV one is the first one I discovered... I have found a crazy number of dirt cheap DVDs and clearance books here, not to mention they have a great selection of regularly priced used books... have even found deeply discounted new books in the front part of the PV store. But by far I enjoy the clearance section the most-- I head straight back there usually, then wander back through the store towards the front to pay. I always find at least one or two things in the back that are in great condition (usually $1-$2 apiece). If looking for something specific, I think it can be a little trickier at Half Price, at least in my experience if I'm looking for a specific title. But I've walked out of the place with a bag full of books/DVDs for under $20. Hard to beat that! read more

I rarely buy books anywhere else. This is the best place!! The associates are knowledgeable about their books, look up their inventory to see if they have a particular book and just give great customer service. They have a huge inventory and I love their clearance section. I found a brand new JD Robb hardback book in excellent condition, for $3.00 Normal retail for this book is over $20.00 I bought 6 books for less than $20 and always have good luck finding authors I like, books in great condition and inexpensive prices, I don't get a chance to visit the store as often as I'd like so I make the most of the times I can visit and usually end up buying at least a half dozen books! read more

Terriable. They broker the shipping of books on line. I ordered 4 books, they sent one directly and it was written in, yellow, smelly and disgusting. They refunded my dollar but not the four dollar shipping. I threw that book away. The other three books came from different shippers/resourses and all claimed to ship on the same date, I received one and then another 4 days later and the last I never received, when I contacted HPB they asked me to contact the shipper. DON'T BUY BOOKS HERE!! There are much better sites to do this from. read more

This place is a good place to shop for vinyl. Only a couple complaints there "RARE" vinyl prices are out of whack but if they can get that much for them more power to them. Clerks are nice a little LOUD make that very LOUD but oh well I still go here each week. read more

This place is just awesome!! I buy all of my D&D books here and most of my other books too. The kids section is pretty cool and they have little toys and crafts that you wouldn't find at most other places. The people who work here are awesome!! I have never found anyone to be condescending or hard to approach. Sure, some of the workers have tattoos and wild hair sometimes. Excellent used book store. We must support our book stores. They are disappearing at a very fast rate. Some of our children may never learn to read cursive because they are not teaching it in some schools. Some children are not going to experience music or art because of the same reason. Paper newspapers are declining. I pray that the day never comes when I will not be able to feel the paper of the book I am reading. read more
