We were having dinner when the topic of adding a new kitty came up. I did an online search and found a precious kitty not too far away. We raced over to the shelter and arrived right before closing. CJ was so helpful. We were able to see two precious kitties. She adopted them the next day. They are definitely keeping their mama busy and bringing joy to her life. I came home with Granola (now Zac) and now, 4 days later, he is fitting in very well. He really didn't need a place to decompress, started eating immediately. Halo is an absolutely awful place to adopt from, and I would never recommend them to anyone. They clearly do not take proper care of their animals. Almost every cat in the facility was visibly sick - sneezing, watery eyes, even strange breathing. Yet they have the audacity to limit you to holding only two cats per day "to prevent germs," which is laughable considering how many of their cats are already sick. You don't even get to meet the cats in a calm or safe way. They make you hold the cat standing up, right outside its cage, in a loud room with other cats and people watching. No private room, no chance to sit down, no real way to see the cat's personality. The cats are clearly terrified and stressed. The worst part? They sent us home with a kitten who was so sick he could barely breathe. Within hours, he was panting, sneezing, and fighting for air. We had to rush him to the ER, where we were told he had a 106 degree fever and that he would have died that night without immediate oxygen, fluids, and intensive care. He was later diagnosed with multiple contagious illnesses that now put my healthy adult cat at risk. Halo completely downplayed his condition and sent him home after neuter surgery without even checking that he was stable enough to leave. This was one of the scariest experiences of my life. Our kitten would not be alive today if we hadn't acted immediately. The worst part is, Halo will not help cover the insane medical bills and take no responsibility for their neglect. Their staff has the worst attitude I have ever seen. And Heather Allen, the CEO, is just the most unhelpful and heartless person. I think there's a special place for people who take such awful care of these sweet animals. Halo should be ashamed of how they run this place. If you care at all about animal welfare, your finances, or your peace of mind - stay far, far away from Halo. read more

After nearly 20 years since hubby and I lived with cats, we felt ready to open our home and hearts to a little critter. We were just living our lives and didn't want to take on the responsibility for an animal during all that time. I came across the familiar HALO name during my research and took a chance with a visit last month. Hubby, kids, and I made the schlep across town to potentially meet our newest family member. This location was tucked a bit back in the complex. If you see the Denny's and Angry Crab Shack, then you are in the right place. In preparation for this visit, I completed their questionnaire on their website and sent it by email. No one ever asked me about it during the entire visit and there are forms to fill out that had the same questions that I answered days prior by email. I think it's safe to say to not bother completing the questionnaire by email to save some time. It was a long visit with a lot of waiting. It was worth the wait as we did end up taking home a kitten. I felt all the staff was vested in making sure each animal was the right fit for potential forever families and while they take your completed paperwork, they also counsel you at the same time to try to set you up for success once home. They will disclose any current or past illnesses and special needs as it arises. I wanted to wait for some time to pass before leaving a review to make sure there were no issues. We did end up renaming our cat and took him to a vet for a wellness exam soon after the adoption. He is perfectly healthy and has adjusted to his new family quickly. Our family is now complete thanks to HALO. Thank you staff and volunteers for all the good work you do. Some tips: Check out their website for their current list of all animals. They update frequently so check back often. If there is one that catches your interest, you can try calling ahead to see if they are still there before making the trip. Bring ALL of your family members living in your household. If you are serious about completing the adoption during your visit, it's important to see if the animal is compatible with everyone. This can also uncover previously unknown allergies to animals if a family member has it. You don't want to bring home an animal and learn they aren't compatible or if a family member has allergies to them and then having to go through the hassle of returning it. That is cruel and a waste of everyone's time. read more

Halo is not the place to go if you want to adopt or surrender an animal. We were to the shelter today to rescue 2 Doberman dogs that have been at this facility for over 5 month. These girls need to be adopted as a pair. We were ready to take them home today. However in their bio they cannot be homed with small animals. We have a maltipoo and we denied to continue. No meet and greet with our current Doberman mix or our maltipoo. No more discussion. Nothing. I don't know if they have proof that these girls cannot be in a home with a small do. Apparently the manager made the decision. Is she a vet? What makes the expert? Our maltipoo has lived peacefully with our current Doberman mix as well as our purebred Doberman that recently passed. No issues. But apparently the manager has the final say. Do NOT use the facility for a pet. You are better off going to the humane society or pet Smart charities. read more

(I live in Phoenix) Adopted an elderly cat from E Bell Road Halo. His fur was full of knots and he was very dusty. Yes, dusty, and they didn't seem to care. We didn't see any exercise room for the cats. All were in cages. Fortunately he's the sweetest cat on earth. I feel like we rescued him from Halo. Horrible rescue that I would barely call a rescue. Takes in animals when it is already overcrowded, doesn't take dogs on walks unless they are potty trained and refuse to go inside their kennel, dirty kennels and hallways, cramming multiple dogs in already packed kennels- who don't even seem to get along, and much more. Even the employees don't seem to like it there. They are worked to the bone with bright red faces, dripping sweat. Very limited interaction with available pets when meeting them, can't even tell the animal's personality. I would absolutely NOT support this place. read more

I want to give a huge shoutout to Kaylee (might be spelled differently) who helped us do a meet and greet. My family has never owned a dog before and we came in basically just to see some dogs and learn about the adoption process. We did one meet with our favorite dog from the website. Kaylee was so wonderfully patient and answered all of our questions as best as she could. When we came in my family was pretty hesitant because we really don't know anything about having a pet, but Kaylee gave us a ton of guidance and let us know what to expect, as well as where we could go for help. I went in a few days ago to just check it out. The woman at the front was very friendly and helpful. A few things stuck out to me about the facility...first the smell is pretty bad when you walk in like urine and strong puppy smell, but it is a shelter. I volunteered at another animal rescue that didn't smell at all at the front though. The building is weird, but they are doing their best, I assume. Lots of twists and turns, small hallways, chipped paint and it's dingy in there. The most surprising room was the cat area. They are in crates on the floor, which is really sad and not recommended for cats. They should have an open play area. Then I went home and realized there is no outdoor park/grass area for the dogs. I was told they get three walks a day, which is fantastic. But overall this place needs help. I know the struggles of rescue and feel like they are trying to help. I wish I had $$$ to help them spruce up this place/relocate. read more

The older blond large+ nightmare at the desk when we ask for help was so rude and disrespectful and stated but that's not how it works when we asked if we could sign up while we were there you want the dogs to go to a loving home but yet when you're faced with somebody like that I don't even want to go back and I really wanted the dog so to have somebody at your front desk when you walk in with that kind of an attitude good luck. We've been fostering and adopting dogs and cats for years and so we've worked with many rescue organizations. I have to say that HALO is without a doubt one of the most professional and organized organizations we have ever adopted from. Our story: A few months ago, one of our four-legged babies passed away, and it was devastating for us. However, we believe strongly that it is important to do what we can to continue to help animals even during times when we are grieving. After a few months, I reached out to multiple organizations about a few dogs I was interested in around Phoenix and Hillarie at HALO got back to me immediately regarding Piccolo. Piccolo had some medical issues, and Hillarie and other HALO staff went out of their way to help us understand more fully what type of care Piccolo would require in the future. This was important for us because we wanted to make sure that we would be able to afford to give her the best care and quality of life possible. Eventually, we took Piccolo home on HALO's foster-to-adopt Staycation program, and she immediately became one of the family. We finalized our adoption after a few weeks and we could not be more thrilled to welcome our wonderful pup into the family! HALO supported us with kindness and understanding through every step of the decision-making process because they wanted the match to be right for both Piccolo and for us. Went to an adoption event on Bells Rd. Somewhat busy; not allowed to view animals without a staff member. Asked about a kitty that had no information and could not be found on website. Unable to get answers to any questions whatsoever. Have written twice requestion information about the kitty and providing a picture of the photo taken so she could be identified. Have not received ANY contact whatsoever to answer my questions about adoption. Was assured that they do not take in any cats or dogs from people, but rather only accept animas shipped in from other cities, or the county shelter itself. No helpful. My husband and I had two meet and greets. One was an Skittish dog that when we met in an open cage there were Pitt bulls meeting with people in the next one. She was so involved in action going on in the busy cage she snap at me while I put my hand out to try to pet her. She wasn't having it put face in the next cage busy and barked at them. I ask if we take the meet and greet some where else. The worker said nope sorry. So he placed her back . I then ask for our second choice and this beautiful dog was in the meet and greet with no other dogs around finally. She was excited and ready to go to her forever home. read more

I am pretty surprised by the negative reviews of this rescue since our interaction was extremely positive. After losing Chuck last year we were heartbroken and never going to get another dog, but one day decided we should check out some shelters and just "take a look". It was towards the end of the day at Halo and the facility was clean and well-staffed. When we questioned about a poodle seen online we were given an EXTENSIVE view of this dog and what type of "parents" he would need. He belonged to an elderly couple and had a pretty quiet life. Apparently, we were old and boring enough to be considered. They explained he had issues. He was labeled as a "resource-guarder" and had nipped a stranger who tried to take a ball from him. Possible problems were explained repeatedly to us and "training with a behaviorist" was suggested. He joined our family. My vet was impressed by "the dog we were never going to get". He appeared healthy and well cared for with appropriate testing by Halo during his month in residence. He was pretty scared and very timid but he adapted well and has been responsive to us and the trainer. We've had no problems and can't thank Halo enough for our new fur baby. read more

They worked very hard to help me adopt my second dog as they ones I liked needed no shared walls/condo. My new girl was very shut down and afraid so we were a good fit since we are retired. I am really glad they are careful with who can adopt from them. It is because they really don't want the dogs to get rehomed again and again. I am so disappointed in the experience with this rescue! They seem unwelcoming and did not seem overly concerned about the dog. They told me he does not walk on a leash and must be carried. They handed me (4'10" tiny girl) a 40+ lb dog to walk out to the car and didn't offer to even hold the door. No problem, got him to the car and then home, turns out he walks just fine. Was told he was fixed, microchipped, vaccinated, treated twice a day for 5 days for giardia and given a dewormer. Got him home and he would not poo or pee for 7 hours then when he finally went, there are HUGE worms in his stool. He has obviously had these parasites for quite some time and been left untreated. How can you possibly allow this? Not to mention I was told he was sharing a kennel with two other dogs!!! To top it off they charged $332 for his adoption. Which would be fine with me if they had actually treated him as stated, but clearly they did not! I don't even know if his records are true at this point. We will see what my vet says in the morning. read more

First of all, the facility is very modern, clean and well maintained but we were especially grateful for one of Halo' many fine personnel, CJ. CJ gave my family a comprehensive review of the background, traits, medical history and Halo's assessment of each dog's personality. Halo has a system to introduce potential adopters to the dogs they are interested in and then a supervised but animal only pet introduction with our current dog. After both sessions, my family and I spent time with our own dog and the dogs we were considering adding to the family. This was a beneficial part of our selecting our second pet and ensuring a good fit. SAD SAD SAD We decided it was time to bring home a new friend for our current cat. Fluff who was a 1.5-year-old cat had captured our hearts. We did initially feel a little unsettled by the cats zero history with other animals, but we took a chance on him. We were told we had 10 days to bring him back for a voucher. We were never told about certain restrictions (such as a voucher being given under the managers discretion). If that were the case, we would have never settled on Fluff because of the risk that came with him not being around animals. We did our best working with the two cats day in and day out, unfortunately they did not get along. My husband sadly brought Fluff back to Halo (it completely broke my family's hearts) in hope to redeem the voucher of $150 to potentially get a new pet. Stephanie the front desk, was completely unprofessional and rude. She disregarded the fact that Fluff did not get along with our cat at home, and even when I called, she immediately and rudely said "You're calling about Fluff? You're not getting a voucher!" I told her about the circumstances on how no one ever explained the discrepancies on the contract when returning the pet. We were verbally told that we could bring back the cat within a 10-day grace period, not for a money refund but for a voucher for a new animal. I asked for the supervisor, and Stephanie said "She's not giving you a voucher, I told her what your husband did and she said she's absolutely not giving you a voucher" I still requested a call back and remained patient and kind. I even thanked her for taking my information back. At this point, I don't think they will call back, so I have reached out to Heather Allen who is Chief Manager of Halo Rescue to hopefully address the issue. It's no longer an issue about the voucher, but the lack of compassion in the staff's attitudes. This was already a difficult and emotional decision, and they did not seem to care. They did not even give us a chance to explain the situation so that future cat parents know that Fluff does not get along with other cats. DO NOT ADOPT FROM THIS FACILTY! I will update my review if/when my issue is resolved and if/when the Chief Executive calls me back. read more

BE AWARE OF THIS LOCATION!!!' It's SUPER unfortunate to have to leave a review like this..... Employees at this location were not honest with me about how dog on dog aggressive a particular dog is/was that I was interested in adopting before bringing my doggie in for a meet and greet. They had me wait in a hall outside of the area where they introduced my dog and this other (aggressive) dog before I could join them. They thought I couldn't hear them as one of them tried to quietly tell the other employee there that she needed to be careful (she was the one holding my dog on a leash) bc that dog would definitely try to bite mine. They knew ahead of time and tried to downplay it by telling me that if my dog tried to mount her she would appropriately and modestly correct him. That was a lie and not the case because all my dog tried to do was come near her and she tried to bite him. I'm assuming they lied & attempted to downplay this dogs aggression towards other dogs in order to get it adopted. So this dog did try to bite my dude and I was watching through a glass window and couldn't do anything about it. They are lucky I had previously worked with my dog after having been bit before to prevent him from becoming aggressive back, otherwise this would definitely have spiraled out of control quickly. I've seen it enough with aggressive dogs to know better. Thankfully it didn't escalate and it narrowly missed biting my dog. 1- I was recently bit by an aggressive dog about a month ago, (trying to keep my dog safe from being hurt because... 2- he had already been attacked unprovoked by an aggressive dog at a dog park and was seriously injured...... THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!! And frankly if this location continues to operate this way you are asking for a lawsuit. And then to add insult to injury they tried to blame it on my dog being nervous. Gaslight much? My dog was nervous bc this dog tried to bite him and narrowly missed doing so.....and he knows he can't get aggressive back. Meanwhile, he's stuck in a small space with people he doesn't know without his owner and this dog who might try to hurt him again. But despite that, my dog actually behaved exceptionally well considering the circumstances and she did indeed try to bite him again. Blaming this dogs aggression on my dog being nervous? That's really low and unethical professional behavior. Do better. Completely UNACCEPTABLE. And you guys are lucky I was so nice about it. Furthermore, if they had been honest with me I most definitely would not have taken time out of my busy schedule to do a meet and greet. They wasted my time and put my dog's well-being at risk. read more

After having the dog home for about a week he developed kennel cough. The vet thinks because he's a puppy it finally caught up to him after being adopted from halo. He was never around any other dogs when we brought him home & he never left the house so no possible way of him getting it here. He has very bad separation anxiety we are in need of getting a new cage after only 2 weeks of keeping him in there while we run errands. My mom also had a bad experience with a pup she got from halo. Extreme separation anxiety to the point where I had to watch her dog while she was at work. He got super sick (still not sure with what) my personal experience I will not adopt from halo again. I might just need to find a breeder for next time. read more

Been going there for years to donate newspaper, look at the cute dogs and occasionally buy cat treats. A couple weeks ago finally was able to adopt a puppy from here. She came as a rescue from Mexico (many homeless dogs there) and has been an absolute joy so far. The adoption was fast and easy n relatively cheap considering puppy was spade n with all shots. The lady who helped us from NY was very friendly. Ppl giving halo bad reviews #1 anytime u adopt a rescue they might have sickness bc hello theyre rescues so take them to vet right away if they have symptoms just like if u go to humane society same thing (i had that happen with my cats from humane theyre fine now) #2 this is no kill which is hard to find #3 they have a 10 day return policy if animal isnt a match remember those things before u adopt! read more

Bad experience We adopted a dog that seemed to be calm and controllable. We were allowed little time with the dog, and no time where he was unleashed or without employee or were we able to walk him. But we thought let's give him a try, they say we could give him back during the next ten days. We had to fight and really struggle to get the dog into our car, but once in, he calmed. Brought him home he did good inside the house. We gave him a bath outside, he did well. Then he became very excited and started leaping at us, scratching us with his teeth and nails, over and over again. We thought, we had over stimulated him. The next night I took him outside to potty and he went after me again, leaping again and again at my face. Ok got him calmed a bit and brought him back in. During the following day he was calm, went for a long walk, did great, later my husband was playing ball outside with him and he started leaping uncontrollably at him again. This time he really injured my husband with large bleeding lacerations on my husbands arms and legs. My husband was screaming in the back yard, I went to the patio door to try and help my husband, the dog did a full leap at the glass door, but that seemed to calm him again, and my husband was able to get away. We then called Halo, and said we were surrendering him, cos we were afraid of him and we were injured. We had him only 3 days, they didn't know if they had a bed for him, it would take 24-48 hours before Halo would let us know if he could come back. I asked if I could just bring him in, they said that was illegal and they had all my info, so don't try that. Waiting for Halos return call, I called again and said that I wanted this dog out of my house! We were a scratched up bleeding mess. He did not bite down, but with his teeth and nails caused the scratches, and he was uncontrollable when he was in one of his fits. They called back and agreed to take him back. I don't know what I would have done if I couldn't have surrendered him back. The county facility is full to the max. This dog was sweet, gentle, until he wasn't then he was uncontrollable. Maybe there are people out there that can fix him, but I know I can't. The dog had no fees to adopt him cos he had been there so long, so we didn't loose any money. So I see that this dog is again listed on Halos website, up for adoption. I had conveyed all of this info to Halo, but I guess they think the problem was us. One other thing, the odor in the Bell Road facility is horrendous, which I know is hard to control, but just be prepared, and insist that you are able to spend time with the dog. We met this dog in the pet washroom/closet, sitting on two folding chairs. They did not show us a yard or large room, a place to interact with the dog. I feel sorry for the dog, and all the other dogs there that are unwanted. read more

READ BEFORE SIGNING THE CONTRACT!!!! Before I went to the main HALO rescue facility, I looked at their website to see their adoptable dogs. I selected a couple of dogs that could be potentials in adopting. I went to the facility and talked with the adoption counselor and informed her that I was looking for a small and laid-back dog that doesn't shed too much due to allergies. The counselor mentioned that she wouldn't know a dog that wouldn't shed too much nor would she know whether the dog would be laid-back because she doesn't really interact with the dogs, too much. I assumed that she was new, so I asked about a couple of dogs that I saw on HALO's website. She grabbed a few folders that held the dogs' information and just read me their files. In those files, she read me the dogs' weight, energy level, and any EXTRA abnormal medical conditions. I selected a couple of dogs that I wanted to meet, so she led to the back in an open cage to do a meet and greet. When I met my dog, I continued to asked about the dog's background (ex: barker? any social skills? house trained? any separation anxiety, any fears? etc). The counselor did not know any of the answers. I should have listened to my gut to get out of the place without the dog, but I did the unthinkable and looked into the dog's sad eyes. One look and asked about the adoption process. The counselor led me back to the front to sign some contracts. I should have read the contract, but was a bit distracted because another counselor was asking questions about the dog that I was going to adopt. Once I brought the dog home, her true personality came out and I knew that we were not a match. Her claws dug pretty hard into my skin, due to her anxieties. (She was trying to hold onto me whenever possible). Whenever I tried brushing her fur, she would try to bite my fingers. Then the final strike was when she was being a bully to other neighbors' and relatives's dogs by trying to bite them. I managed to stop these attacks, but due to my trauma on how my dog passed away (my beloved dog passed away when a couple of dogs attacked her), I knew that I could not keep this dog. I went back to HALO and bypassed the proper procedure on returning the dog (due to my mentioned trauma). I informed them about this information and instead of being sympathetic, I was given a stink eye/judgmental looks. I agree that I should have followed the proper procedure, but my own anxiety/stress levels were too much for me to handle. After signing the proper forms and talking with several people on the reason, HALO finally agreed to take back the dog. (In case if you were wondering, the dog seemed to be super happy to be back). I was also informed that the biting/scratching incidents were already known at the facility, but they would update on the dog's energy level from neutral to high. I was also informed that the person that handles the voucher is out of office, but once back, they will reach out. I was never contacted. If I knew about the dog's history, I would not have adopted this dog and relive the nightmare on how my past dog passed away. In summary, BEWARE and read the contract, before signing! read more

I adopted a "pug chihuahua" from this facility last year. Did a DNA test to find out he was a German shepherd husky mix. I love him greatly and luckily I had the space for him. Just be careful when getting a dog from this location might not be exactly what you thought you got! read more
