I used to consider Portillo's a 5-star place, no question. It was consistent, reliable, and when you ordered a beef "extra dipped," you actually got a sandwich that delivered. Lately, it's been more hit or miss. I still go, just not as often. The food is still good overall, and when they get it right, it reminds you why it built such a strong reputation. But there have been enough off visits, dry beef, inconsistent quality, and some app issues, that it doesn't feel like the same level it used to be. It's not bad by any means. My fiancé and I had lunch here on a Sunday and everything went smoothly and well. Even with the lunch rush crowd the service was quick. We ordered our food and received it within less than 10 mins. I got the chopped salad and my fiancé got a hot dog and polish sausage. Portillo's is an upper scale fast food joint and the food is decent and reasonably priced. Yay for Portillo's! I'm not from the Chicagoland area. When I visited earlier this year, they didn't have plant based hot dogs yet. This time in November of 2022, I was fortunate to try the veggie dogs. They are packed with pea protein and seasoned with cracked pepper, garlic and paprika. The veggie dogs are char-grilled just like the regular hot dogs. Love the Chicago style veggie dogs! (See the photo.) My husband has had the regular hot dogs in the past that he thought were OK. He likes the beef sandwiches much better. Fries are A-OK. I like the vibe here. The dining area is bustling with families, couples, groups of friends, etc. So far, cashiers have been kind and efficient. The staff that places the orders on the counter shouts out numbers with a rhyme like: Number 1 you're order's done! Number 2 food's waiting for you! Number 3 come see me! Number 4 food's out the door! I've been to another location closer to the O'Hare Airport many years ago and remember the famous chocolate shake. It's like a chocolate milkshake made from their actual chocolate cake. It's quite decadent! In my neck of the woods, the closest Portillo's is in Buena Park, CA. First of all, the service is excellent. The young man that took our order, his name was Miles, he was very pleasant and efficient. It did take a little bit longer for our food than we expected but we were OK standing and watching the process of all of the workers actually paying attention to what they were doing and doing it efficiently. Got home and it is missing the jumbo hotdog. We went back and none of the employees apologize, just to say sorry. The order was T17 and then the girl just said here you go. It seems that it made you feel that you are lying. Quality of service and the training for the employees are lacking. If I can get give them a negative star I would. LORD OF THE FRIES Consistent and delicious, the Bolingbrook Portillo's is one of the best in the burbs. Twice daily, I drive past this 50's-themed diner on Boughton that's just east of Rt 53. Regardless of the time of day, there's an endless line of cars in the drive-thru.....3pm on a Tuesday, midnight on Christmas, it doesn't seem to matter. The yellow neon lighting draws us in and knowing all the menu options by heart, the temptation to stop for "a quick bite" looms large. While some people opt for a regular hot dog, the way to go is the Jumbo Chi-style ($3.89). It's dragged through the garden, as they say, with green relish, yellow mustard, chopped white onions, tomato wedges, a pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt in a poppyseed bun. This is a personal favorite of Nichole S, and every now and then I order one too. Don't sleep on the bacon cheeseburger ($6.79): a 1/3lb charbroiled patty with American cheese, bacon strips, crisp cool lettuce, fresh tomato and mayo on a toasted bun. It comes in a perfectly sized styrofoam clamshell and has yet to disappoint. Their ribs are tasty, but The Patio does 'em a bit better. The chili is yummy; ask for it loaded. Their fries ($2.69 for a large order--be SURE to add a cheese cup for 89¢!) are crinkle cut and delicious. The onion rings ($2.69) are great, as well. I used to be obsessed with their Italian beef until I discovered the magic that is the beef 'n cheddar croissant ($6.49). Adding sweet peppers or hot giardiniera is well worth it for only 60¢ extra. Portillo's chopped salad ($8.29) is an eclectic mix of diced chicken, short tube noodles, gorgonzola, green onions and tomatoes in a sweet house dressing. I made a bigger version of this once for Mother's Day, using catering size portions of each ingredient in separate tubs, and tossing everything in a large garbage bag to mix it all up. A slice of chocolate cake ($3.29) completes the pre-diabetes checklist. Most cake recipes call for some combination of eggs, oil, and water. Portillo's cake is extra moist because they use mayonnaise, which is an emulsification of.....you guessed it, eggs and oil. Some folks may already know that fun factoid, but for those that didn't, consider your mind blown! * TL;DR * I'm happily married, but if I weren't, I would enter into a Civil Union with Portillo's. "I now pronounce you Man & Beefy Cheddar Croissant. You may now eat your bride." It's clear that management runs a tight ship, any time I visit it's all-hands-on-deck in the drive thru. Order takers brave the harsh cold of winter, dog days of summer, and hours of standing out there in the rain to bring us sustenance. They're the unsung heroes of this operation, and if anyone deserves tips, it's those brave souls weaving between the cars. Of the six Portillo's I've been to so far (River Forest, Northlake, Willowbrook, Oswego, Elmhurst, and now Bolingbrook), this location is at the top of the heap. Though not terribly close to our house, they're on my way home and when the cravings hit, I know I can count on them for delicious dogs/burgers/italian beef. Portillos Bolingbrook has a 1950's theme. Except this visit also had a Christmas theme spread throughout the large location. This Portillo's location also has a gift area where several Portillo's themed items are available for purchase. This includes a scented air freshener and even an ornament, not to mention some other neat gift ideas as well. This location has a self-service fountain drink area, which I believe might be new to this specific Portillo's. This location does seem to always be pretty busy and because of that, it does seem to take a noticeable amount of time for your order to be ready. I think from the time your order is placed until it's ready, it might be a good call to find a table and just listen for your number to creatively be called. The Christmas decor as all the other decor too is fun to look at and makes for good pics. The food, even if it may take a little bit of a wait is still always on point. This place is so cool! Wow and for a 5 pm run on a Sunday there are a lot of people. The food here is okay but the experience is spellbound. Inside it's like an extremely flashy deli where there are a bunch of billboards advertising their specialty items. The inside mechanics is amazing as the kitchen assembly-line is so pristine. We ordered: 1. Italian Beef Sandwich - The sandwich is okay, but without the cheese, it is extremely dry, so you might as well just pay the extra for it. They don't tell you that it is extra so be careful. The beef is too dry but packs a huge flavor profile and there is so much of it, it's amazing how they were able to stuff all of that into a sandwich. 2. Ribs - On Sundays during the summer season there is a special promotion where if you buy a rack of ribs and a soft drink, they will give you 1/2 a rack more. So that day we ate a 1.5 racks of ribs, but it is not as big as you would think. The flavor is okay as it has a very classic BBQ flavor, but the ribs themselves are pretty tough and dry.
