This place is a gem. I've had several dishes here; the sushi, sashimi, apps and the hot stone bowl. Well, I visited with a friend and tried the udon curry soup and my life was changed. This soup is a thick curry base with udon, fish cakes, chicken, spinach and egg. I couldn't finish it and discovered it was even better after being in the fridge overnight... all the flavors soaked in and it was amazing. ** 4.5 Stars ** Finally had lunch here earlier this week after hearing from so many people about how good this place was. I went with a couple of my work colleagues. For a beverage, I had the Green Tea. Instead of the normal Miso soup, I opted for the Hama soup, which is a Miso soup, with mushrooms and cooked salmon flaked into the soup. It had a very interesting flavor to it - very strong salmon flavor. The one thing I did not like about it was that the mushrooms were a tad chewy. Still, an excellent soup! I then had the Tuna Tataki, also the first time I've tried this dish - thin pieces of raw tuna lightly cooked along the edges. I go for the melt-in-your mouth miso Chilean sea bass appetizer and nebeyaki udon with tempura. Every meal is Zen and we like to chill out and enjoy the ambiance and catch up on the day. Hama means shore in Japanese. So anything that says shore along with sushi should be fresh right? Well yeah! I came here from an exhausting day of life and was craving some sashimi. I ordered the Tekka don (Tuna sashimi slices on a bed of sushi rice) and it did not disappoint. The tuna was cut fresh and thick. The only thing I would say to improve on the dish is when ginger is place on the tuna, it actually cooks the tuna. I was wondering why one piece of my tuna sashimi was cooked to a eyesore tan color. The interior decorating is like walking into a bamboo garden. The sushi bar is to your immediate right when you walk in and the chefs there know what they're doing. They often shout to each other, even though they're a foot away from one another. I have this place under my radar for good sushi cravings (especially when im at work). I had a wonderful sushi dinner here tonight. I hail from the west coast (Seattle) where we have excellent sushi at many restaurants. I was craving some sushi i and was staying at a nearby hotel so I thought I would give Hama a try. All I have to say is WOW! By far some of the best and freshest sushi/sashimi I've ever had! I also really enjoyed the soft shell crab appetizer - different than what I am used to but delicious! Also I thought the staff was very very nice and accommodating. I am about to start travel to this area for work on a semi-regular basis and Hama will definitely be a must-return for my future trips. What can I say - it's a total winner for me! read more

For a coworker's going away lunch, we had about ten people attend for one last get-together. I'm not the biggest sushi fan so I decided to order a bowl of ramen instead. I had two small pieces of pork, hardly any noodles and the broth was not very flavorful. There was also a random piece of seaweed floating in there, which was unexpected (never had that in any ramen dishes anywhere else) and since I don't like seaweed, it was not a welcome addition. I lowered my expectations since I was ordering ramen at a sushi place, but was still underwhelmed. Other problems we had were one of the people didn't receive a dish until after everyone had eaten and we had to remind them to bring it (the order was clearly left off the list), and we also had a few issues with the checks. Since we couldn't have individual checks we kept incorrectly receiving other tables' bills. When walking out I noticed most other patrons ordered sushi so perhaps that was better, but with so many food options in the area I don't think I'll be back soon. read more

Not bad; not great. Hama is a decent, if Americanized sushi place. All the (American) classics are here and along with a few "special" also Americanized rolls. They have "all cooked fish" options with a scattering of general Japanese dishes for those who care for it. On one visit, the fish was fresh and tasty although nothing extraordinary. Service was pretty good if a little bit slow. With one nearby sushi place recently closed and another (at least for now) going to carryout only, Hama is, by default, the best eat-in sushi in this part of Reston/Herndon. So...if you live in the area or are staying in a nearby hotel and want sushi nearby, worth visiting. But nothing special. read more

This is a good place to stop by if you're not willing to drive to Fairfax for Marumen or Jinya in Mosaic. It's fairly spacious and there was even an arrangement for a floor style table in the back of the restaurant. The entire restaurant is run by one woman who is both the hostess and server - so service was a bit slow, but understandably so. I ordered hot tea, pork gyoza, shoyu ramen, and their fried green tea ice-cream. Tea was piping hot and it was a fairly windy day outside, which was a pleasant surprise since most restaurants serve their teas more on the warm, but not super hot side. My ramen came with a side salad that overdid the dressing, but it's not a huge complaint. The gyoza was delicious, I only wish they had a bigger side of the dipping sauce alongside it instead of trying to make the platting arrangement look nice. Their shoyu ramen was flavorful, but the pork belly and egg were overcooked and threw off the taste a tad bit. It had a good balance of noodle to soup ratio as well as the accompaniment of other garnishes like bean sprouts, naruto, and nori. As for the fried green tea ice-cream, that can be a hit or miss, and in this instance, it was a miss. The ice-cream was over-breaded that it there was a noticeable layer between it and the ice-cream itself. It also was served with more whipped cream than needed that it caused the breading to become soggy. The chocolate and strawberry drizzles were a nice touch, but my palate was oversaturated from the abundance of whipped cream. The ice-cream itself was still intact, which meant that it was fried properly to not melt and it was still creamy and smooth. I'd definitely give this place another shot. I hadn't tried their sushi, but it's on my list to try whenever I visit next. read more

If you're looking for the real deal, with toro, amaebi and fresh wasabi consistently on the menu, look no further. Pay attention to the specials board; on a recent visit they had baby octopus, and they occasionally have ankimo. Presentations are beautiful, with no plastic garnish in sight! This is the Best Japanese Restaurant in Herndon, & probably Reston as well. I'm not aware of any Japanese Restaurants in Reston that are as good as Hama Sushi, although i try to stay away from Reston as much as humanly-possible. Reno-911 is probably about the county-police in Reston. read more

I've ordered from here before, but I didn't write a review about it last time because I ended up not eating my main meal, the spicy tuna don. The reason I didn't eat it is because their Grubhub description for spicy tuna don says "spicy California roll, spicy tuna roll, spicy yellowtail roll" - implying that this would be three sushi rolls. Obviously it wasn't, since that's not what don is, but I didn't know what don is because I'm an uncultured white person. (For my fellow uncultured white people, don is essentially all the ingredients of sushi piled on top of each other in a giant bowl, and it is, in my opinion, unappealing/far inferior to actual sushi.) I also got fried oysters that time, and they were gross. Tonight I tried another Grubhub order, not sure if I'd regret it or not. As it turns out, their sushi is actually pretty good. I got the spicy California roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber and spicy mayo), tiger roll (avocado, crab and spicy caviar) and Philadelphia roll (salmon, cream cheese, scallions and cucumber.) Loved them all. I got the tenzaru soba as well, which came adorned with an actual raw quail's egg that I carefully opted not to pour out onto my noodles. The dish overall was kind of strange... I'd never had buckwheat noodles before, and I thought they had this papery tang to them, almost like eating pungent cardboard. Again though, uncultured white person. If you like tenzaru soba, I can say this seemed very authentic. The food is definitely not cheap; the sushi rolls were reasonable, but the noodles were $15 and the tuna don last time, according to my Grubhub order history, was $20. Based on that, it's fair to say that the non-sushi items are bordering on a little overpriced When combining tonight's experience with the previous time I ordered from them, Hama is a solid 3.75, which I'll round up because I was quite happy with my sushi. read more

A friend that lives nearby always talked this place up, claiming it was one of the best sushi spots in the area. I didn't really think he knew what he was talking about. Now, I know he didn't really know what he was talking about. Don't get me wrong, Hama is fine and dandy for a quick sushi fix if you're in this part of Virginia, but I probably wouldn't venture too far out of my way for it. The sashimi was really fresh and cut generously. Three pieces for $5.95 is not exactly a steal, but pretty standard. My roll was average. However, the staff was incredibly nice. Two orders of sashimi and a roll ran me $18, so you can see how quickly my bill added up. And without much a do. If I return, I would love to check out their happy hour. They seem to have some pretty good deals between 5-7pm. Otherwise, I can find sushi like this just about anywhere. read more

I have to be honest with you... I do not each sushi, but I love Japanese food. However, I hate how expensive it is. I ordered the Yakisoba (Vegetable) for $8.50. It came out with a small salad. The portion size was good but it did not come with a lot of vegetables (carrot, cabbage, and onion). On the side is seasoned radish and pickled ginger... and one piece of broccoli. Was the broccoli an afterthough? The restaurant itself is small, but I saw a peak of a room in the back were people can seat on the floor. It is very nicely decorated. The staff itself are Korean. My ears kept perking up every time I heard Korean. The menu seems average but not adventurous. From the outside the restaurant is unassuming. Three stars, no more, no less. If you're in the area and you want a simple, delicious and reliable sushi experience, you can go to Hama. No worries. However, just less than a mile down the road in the Woodland Park center you'll find Kumo, which is the winner for me in the battle between the two Herndon sushi restaurant mainstays. Hama has nice decor, plenty of seating, and a private dining area that fits traditional Japanese etiquette, and while Hama gets crowded at lunch, they are practically empty in the evenings. What really killed the mood for me the last time I was at Hama wasn't just the large-screen TV in the main dining area, but also the fact that it was playing a CNN documentary on a super-grisly and not-so-pleasant-for-dinner subject. Could have definitely done without that during dinner! Sashimi plates are more creative at Hama, but I've found fish cut quality and presentation to be of a higher caliber at Kumo. On our last visit, I ordered the Yellowtail Lovers plate, and for $22, I was impressed at the quantity of yellowtail-inspired sushi and sashimi, but was a bit disappointed at some of the toughness and "gristle" in some of the pieces; I'm surprised the sushi chefs would serve these pieces in an otherwise nice presentation. My husband's chicken teriyaki was okay, but pretty boring. Appeared to be a pounded chicken breast sliced cross-wise and smothered with teriyaki and a few courtesy sprinkles of sesame seeds. Requisite miso and salad were okay, but miso lacked any real tofu and salad dressing was more watery than what you might like, especially if you've had the unique dressing at Reston's Nikko sushi. Hama feels a little run-down, especially when compared to the other area sushi spots, and the service itself feels tired and lacking, especially in the evening hours. While Hama isn't any more or any less than A-OK, my first recommendation to a friend or acquaintance in the area would be for Kumo sushi in the immediate vicinity for a superior sushi/Japanese cuisine experience all-around. read more

I've come here a few times for lunch and every few months Specialicious comes out with a $20 for $40 worth coupon for dinner so I take full advantage. Hama makes one of my favorite sashimi. It is fresh, cut thick, and plentiful in portion. The special rolls I would recommend are their tuna and salmon special roll, spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, tiger roll, and spider roll. You can't really go wrong with any of the sashimi or sushi here. If you order a main entree, it comes with complimentary soup and salad. The staff is quite welcoming and will greet you when you enter as well as when you leave. They're very friendly, quick, and accommodating. Hama has become one of my go-to's for sushi. Tip: I would skip ordering both the tempura and the tonkatsu. They used the boxed tempura batter instead of panko breadcrumbs which makes all the difference IMO. The tonkatsu was dry and the batter came off easily. A squeeze of some lemon juice nor the accompanying dipping sauce didn't aid the dryness enough for me to want to keep eating it. read more

This place is wildly underrated. No idea what happened to lose 1.5 stars. Wait staff constantly checking on you, food fresh and clearly made with care. It blew every expectation out of the water. The texture of the nigiri was insane, so soft. Spicy tuna, Udon, tempura, tuna and salmon nigiri all phenomenal. The salad before the meal had a dressing I've never had before but was one of the best I've ever had. It's worth a shot, definitely worth dining in for the decor and service alone. Not bad. Grabbed some take out while in town on business. The wait was longer than I expected, but still reasonable. The restaurant is very small, so don't hit this place up at noon for lunch, as it is as crowded as every other place in this shopping center. About 1pm when I went, a couple tables and several stools at the bar were open. Not a whole lot of variety in their sushi, but what they've got is pretty good. The Philly Roll & Yellow Tail w/Scallion were quite good. The spicy salmon was not (why on earth would they put the spicy sauce on top instead of inside the roll? and what is up with a fish bone in my roll?). They had a weird roll on the menu involving flank steak that I was not adventurous enough to try. $20 for 3 rolls, not bad but def not cheap. Overall, not bad, but I will prob try other sushi places out in the area before I'd head back here. read more

I have been ordering from Hama consistently during COVID and have not been let down. The quality of the food, prices and the offerings are always consistent. Sometimes all you can ask for in a restaurant is to provide consistency, luckily this neighborhood sushi spot does that.
