Got dirty looks from the waitress and even dirtier ones from the sushi chefs when she said an order to go to them. I said never mind, it was clear to me that they wanted to get out and we did not want to be a bother and she insisted that this was not the case, I misunderstood their tone. 2 minutes later when we tried to order the sushi chef said they were closed and gave me another dirty look. Ok, we over ordered. Our eyes were hungrier than our stomachs. We hit the range of specialty rolls, American style sushi, and sashimi. Rolls came out, as ready, in a steady stream. At one point, we realized we were all eating the 'wrong' rolls, but they were all so delicious... some pleasant surprised. They can make the rolls pretty spicy, so take the descriptions seriously. Been going here for almost 2 decades. Been eating Sushi in the DC area for at least 30 years, back when you had to drive to Silver Spring, MD for good sushi. I always get the Sushi-Sashimi combo plus the Spicy Calamari salad as a starter. Not only is the fish always fresh, the dishes are beautifully presented. It is a go-to place for a business lunch. Definitely an experience at a good price. Of course, Sushi always tastes better on an expense account. I SO love the spicy tuna cuz they actually make it spicy! They don't just use the mayo to give it flavor, they actually have a proper peppery kick. The staff are engaging, even on the phone, they ask what your interests are AND will say what their preferences might be. Don't waster your hard earn money here. I ordered vegetable tempura and curry with chiken tonkatsu. The tempura tasted "heavy" suggesting the oil the tempura was cooked in was old. The tonkatsu was horrible. I could not bite into the chicken because it had the texture of rubber. I was concerned about health safety of eating the chicken. It was not really a tonkatsu either because the breading was falling off and the portion was very small. Not crunchy at all. The size of the order was super small. It wasn't a full breast, but three small pieces, each the size of a child's little finger. Quite disgusting. The dinner came with miso soup which tasted a slight bit salty for my taste. No traditional Japanese salad. Instead of complaining, I just left after I paid. I will never go to that place again. BTW, I was raised in Kyushu, Japan, so this was, in my opinion, not an authentic Japanese experience. Service was okay, but the worst part is the waitress who took my order overcharged me for a vegetable tempura. I asked if I could have a side order. They did not have it (imagine that). I asked if I could replace the shrimp tempura with vegetable? She said, yes; but I was charged $13.87 for five pieces of vegetable. I felt cheated, and I believe the waitress was either too lazy to tell me I was going to be charged premium, or she was just downright working for the Yakuza. One of the better sushi restaurants in the area. Fish is better than most places in the area-- nothing extraordinary but decent, definitely not gross like some places around. They also have some special fish on the white board, including some obtained from Japan and Cali. Aji (horse mackerel) was decent. Some of the staff are Japanese. I asked to substitute the salmon in the sushi combination with something else, which they did for a fee. That's right, Japanese people don't eat salmon raw. Ew. read more

Update on 08/19 After going to Mikaku for about 10 times, I still think the Toro and Uni here is the best. Much better than at Mikaku. Of course, some of the item is not as authentic as it can be as it's not Japanese owned (the owner is Korean). Also, the quality and service is not always top notched, for some strange reason. This is why I lowered the rating to 4/5. -------------- Oh boy, if you go there once you'll get so hooked that you'll go back over and over again, until you run dry. They have excellent (I mean EXCELLENT out loud) fatty tuna (toro) [ouch, 10 bucks for 3 pieces of sashimi, but if you are a big fan of sashimi, save up and eat two days of mcdonalds and try toro sashimi on the side at least once] and wonderful salmon. In general because lack of time I would buy take out from restaurants. This place takes the care to put everything nicely in boxes and it's as good as eating at the restaurant. I have had pretty good sashimi in my life, and I would rate them one of the better ones. I have also had their curry udon, tempura, which are for the less aventurous and still quite good. I cannot stress more how good their salmon are - the right cut, the right fat. Very fresh. I have had at least 10 times their "salmon lover combo". It's got an assortment of sushi (spicy roll, normal roll, and the ones with a piece of fish on a rice lump) and sashimi. They also give rice if you don't think that's enough. Of course, japanese restaurants are usually not somewhere you can get away with 10 bucks in your pocket. So, be prepared to spend $20-25 dollars on food + drink. But then again, 20-25 isn't outrageous compared to other some other japanese places you can go. One thing that is quite interesting is that they are run by Korean, so they would give you korean cold dish on the side of your japanese food, but nonetheless the japanese food feels very authentic. read more

I'm going to downgrade a star because of service, but not because of fish. I've visited many times since my first review and I've steadily noticed service is not quite as top notch as it used to be. I've had servers where there was a language barrier, which lead to confusion about orders and servers who were not as engaging as ones I've had in the past. Oh well, what really counts is the food, and I haven't been disappointed with that yet. I'm happy that fish quality is still high and prices have remained reasonable. I've ordered the avocado salad a couple of times now and like the dressing they use on it (sesame?) and the squid salad is still a favorite. I ordered sushi and sashimi from the ala carte menu at the bar. Chef "Won" seemed pleased with my order, provided a complimentary small noodle thingy and some kind of pickled shrimp - both tasty and interesting. My family loves Hama Sushi! They are alway so friendly, and they give my five-year old daughter a special little treat and children's chopsticks, which she loves. I have tried a bunch of Sushi places in the DC-area, and Hama Sushi is near the top. I would say this place can compete with the venerable Sushi Ko in downtown DC. The sushi rice is flavorful and sticky, with just the hint of sweetness, and the fish always tastes fresh to me. For a Japanese restaurant, prices are reasonable, too. read more

One of my favorite places to get sushi in Virginia... it's tucked away in the Clock Tower shopping plaza and is convenient to get to. I didn't give it 5 stars because I have had very good sushi in my day. Still, I love it here... the staff is very friendly and the regular menu items are also very good (for those who don't dig the raw fish). Hama is also one of the few places I know of that serves Ramen -- real ramen... not the kind you used to make in a hot pot in college after a late night out. Found this sushi restaurant while on vacation and was extremely surprised with it. Coming from California, I didn't have the highest expectations, but again, I was surprised to find this great place. I came with a group of 7 other people, but they were able to accommodate us right away on a Friday night. We ordered individually which was no problem for them, which is great. No wild selections or pages and pages of cliched-named mammoth sushi rolls. The basics are tried and true and served here artfully. They happily customize your sushi selection for you as well. My favorite option: tuna tempura roll with added avocado. Comes out hot and crisp on the outside and cool raw tuna inside. Delicious! Real ground wasabi is available on request, as are other delightful compliments: the gyoza dumplings, when fresh, are outstanding. The miso has rich deep flavor. I have to say reading the reviews I was disappointed. I have gone to Hama Sushi for a few years and I have never disliked my food. Im veg so I have never tried the sushi, but the boyfriend was with me and he liked his food. He also said he has never had anything he didnt like from Hama. When you walk in the door the sushi chefs and waitresses great you in Japanese. The decor inside feels like you arent in a stripmall. The staff is friendly and attentive, our waitress probably came by to fill up our water and green tea 3-4 times as needed... Yesterday was probably the first time I didnt order a few veggie rolls, or the veggie combo. Instead I looked at the menu and decided on the Tofu Teriyaki with the spicy teriyaki sauce. YUMM! Unlike other sushi places I have been to Hama Sushi didnt skimp on the tofu and fill up your plate with random veggies, here they offered enough tofu that it probably would have filled up at least two people if not more. I've gotten food from here several times, and Hama works just fine. I've had most of the vegetarian rolls, chicken teriyaki entrée, Hama soup, and other items. I'd say my favorites are the soup and the sweet potato roll. The soup has wonderful flavors, and it's not just your plain old miso soup; it has salmon in it! The sweet potato roll is crunchy, huge, and just plain delicious. The fish sushi is just alright. I think those marked as spicy could be spicier. If you decide to call in an order for pickup, they are pretty spot on with estimating times. I've called in sushi orders and they typically say 10 minutes which worked out. If you decide to dine in, there are plenty of tables, so you probably won't have to wait for one even in high traffic times. There is a back area with a more traditional Japanese sitting space. The staff could improve their approach with customers - they don't make conversation, and when you ask for their opinion, they are not eager to give you one. Bottom line: this is an okay spot for traditional Japanese fare as well as some new dishes in a calm atmosphere. Get the sweet potato roll! read more

i've been here several times - mostly to pick up food and bring home. they recently remodeled the front area so it's much more open and nicer looking (with a bench for carryout people like me) and a bamboo frame to separate the waiting area from the dining area. I usually order the tuna & salmon combo and the nabeyaki udon - which is real good. Seaweed salad is good too. A little pricey - but thats expected at a sushi place. All the food we had tasted great and the sushi was really fresh! A group of us had beef dumplings, steamed shrimp dumplings, shrimp tempura, a tuna roll, and salmon roll as appetizers all delicious. I had a lunch bento box that came with miso soup, salad, bulgogi beef (you can choose between 4 things for the meat), 6 pieces of sushi (3 california roll, 3 nigiri), rice and something I didn't recognize, it looked like waldorf salad to me. I was not able to finish my meal because of all the appetizers we ordered, but everything was great. The only thing I did not try was the side that looked like waldorf salad. The service was fast and friendly, the atmosphere was very casual and loud which is always nice if you want to converse with others and the prices were pretty good for the lunch special.
