It's not for those who are craving fancy rolls covered in sauces and mayo and adorned with toppings offered by servers with sweet smiles. I pick up the basic California rolls for my kids on a regular basis. For less than $5 for 8 rolls, it can't be beat. There are also eel and rainbow rolls available. I am quite impressed with the pricing and quality of the sushi and sashimi here. My husband always raves about sushi from Lotte and now I know why. I have picked up sushi here for him a couple of times when I'm at Lotte doing my Asian grocery shopping. I haven't tried the sushi until now and it's not bad. I tried everything from the California rolls, to the spicy tuna rolls, to the assorted sashimi and nigiri, and to the octopus salad. With the prices of food increasing these days, I appreciate how the generous portion of sashimi here is $14. The fish tastes good and none of the pieces are chewy or spoiled. The sushi rice in the nigiri is descent and still not a bad value. The rolls are a good size with a good amount of spicy tuna. I really liked their octopus salad. It's delicately marinated with sesame oil and I think mirin? and the octopus was not tough or chewy. I noticed a couple of eatery places inside Lotte are permanently closed today. For the price this place is a bargain. Not only are they preparing it fresh all day by the looks of it the pricing is exquisite. I got a tuna avocado roll for $4.95. It was basic and simple but was delectable. My only critique would be that they don't seem to put spicy mayo on top of most of there rolls. I just feel like it's a great compliment to the sushi. While grocery shopping at Lotte I'm always tempted by their food court. This time around I saw this sushi place near the produce area and had to give it a try! I got the Philadelphia Roll, Dragon Roll and Small Sashimi! First thing i notice the prices are extremely low which is always a plus for a quick bite to eat. The Philadelphia roll tasted as good as you can get anywhere else I highly recommend. The dragon roll was okay, the eel was a bit dry but the overall flavor was good. The small sashimi tasted refreshing, but it was very thinly sliced. Overall, I really liked the Philadelphia roll and would definitely get it again. As for the other two items they were decent for the price. If you go, just remember it is a grocery store sushi place and it was a great deal! read more

Unbelievably cheap and decent sushi. I've never seen sushi this inexpensive and it's pretty good. Def better than supermarket sushi. Not as quality as a Japanese restaurant but what do u expect for the price. We got the California roll (2.95) volcano crab roll (4.94), rainbow roll (5.95), Boston shrimp (3.95), seaweed salad (2.95). My dad said that the rainbow roll tuna was a little fishy. Volcano roll was a bit spicy but good. Boston roll seemed a little bland and small but was ok. This place was a little hard to find. Didn't realize it was in a supermarket and even so, couldn't find it until I called and asked to find out it was in produce area. It's nice that it's in a supermarket so we actually enjoyed looking thru be market too while making our purchase. I finally got to try Rainbow Sushi inside the Lotte Plaza market. Good news: It's cheap. Bad news: It's priced about right. This is among the lowest quality sushi I've ever had, even among supermarket sushi. To be clear, I'm not a sushi snob. I appreciate the fine art and the superlative fish at an expensive place like Tachibana, but I also regularly enjoy the quality and value of what you get at a small place like Matsu Sushi, and even the cheap prepackaged grab 'n go sushi at markets like Wegmans. The fish I got at Rainbow Sushi was icy cold and water logged. I supposed that's better than warm and rancid, but yikes. It must have been frozen because as it came up to room temperature it got very watery (see photo). The sashimi was all sliced very thin. The 16 piece assortment was more like the equivalent of 10 pieces at a real sushi restaurant. The maguro (tuna) and sake (salmon) were flavorless, and the hirame (whitefish) was tough and sinewy. Only the shiro maguro (white tuna) was really worth eating. It was watery too, but at least it had some flavor. I imagine the cooked rolls like the California roll are probably fine. That's the only thing I'd try again here. The one star is because at least I didn't spend a fortune. read more

A little stand in Lotte in the produce section. This is my favorite place to get California Roll (B) because it's delicious and so CHEAP. 8 pieces only for $3!!!! I also enjoy the spicy rolls! But simple rolls will never be more than $6 but if you want fancier or sashimi, still not expensive at all. The sushi is definitely fresh because the chefs are constantly making new rolls. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I've only recently discovered Rainbow Sushi recently and now that I know it exists, I try to come here every Sunday. Mainly because that's when I crave sushi and not that I need to do groceries or come for the free samples provided by Lotte. The sushi ranges from $2.95 to $7.95 for the sushi rolls. When you get to sashimi, that's when it gets past the $10 range, however that is still cheap for sashimi. Selection is super simple. The chefs create the sushi rolls, then post them in containers similar to trader joes and harris teeter. The quality is a little better than the grocery stores, however it's still a price you pay for. I opt for the rainbow roll (not because that's the name of the restaurant), but it has a good fish to rice ratio...and it's cheap! THE FINAL BAMBOO: Everytime I come here, I pay $4.95 for my rainbow sushi order. I stopped by during lunchtime and the stand had a great assortment of packaged sushi, seaweed, and spring rolls. From California Rolls ($2.95) to Nigiri ($5+), the sushi looked pretty decent - especially for the price. Service was quick and easy and the register was located right in the stand. The employee who handled my transaction was very friendly. Salmon Platter ($6.95) - I picked up a salmon platter, which included 4 pieces of salmon nigiri and 5 salmon rolls. The package also included the usual wasabi, ginger, and two packets of soy sauce. For the quantity and price, the overall package was a great deal. In terms of the quality, it was not the greatest, but what can you really expect for $7? All-in-all, unless I had the extreme urgency for sushi I probably would not revisit. The sushi is freshly prepared and is great for a meal on the go. Now, I've had many, many pieces of sushi, rolls, sashimi, etc. and I'm in no way saying this is the best sushi I've ever had. This is, however, the best bargain sushi around. In my experience, cheap sushi is bad quality and bad taste. Luckily, that isn't the case here. Guys, they're undergoing renovation. If you look closely at the walls around Lotte you can see the entire store looks different, they're renovating the kiosk. They're only temporarily closed, not permanently. I asked the food place behind Rainbow (along the wall), they said they should be reopened within a few weeks. This is the sushi restaurant option within the Lotte supermarket here in Chantilly. It is good enough. They only do already-prepared sushi, and, hence, they have to keep everything refrigerated. The number of customers is high enough that that is not a bad thing, as in, nothing sits in the refrigerator for an hour before *you* decide that *you* are interested in it, and want to eat it, and so you buy it. No, instead everything *cold* (more on why that adjective/definition/limitation is a problem in a moment) is about as fresh as if it was made-to-order, and that means that the tuna, spicy tuna rolls, and salmon are all almost as good as an expensive sushi restaurant (and yes, that is quite a deal, given that you are paying only already-prepared sushi prices for the sushi here). However, things like eel/unagi are *always* (really) to be/should be prepared warm/hot (always!). And many should-be-warm sushi dishes are here, in the refrigerator, and if you buy them, you might as well be buying sushi from a Giant supermarket. You won't get sick, if you LOVE sushi you still get some of that sushi taste that you love (some, a little, a tad), and it will be A LOT cheaper than restaurant sushi. But, it won't really be *good.* So, if you want to pair some sushi with the (overall better) Korean and/or Chinese options in the food court here at Lotte, pick up some spicy tuna rolls, and/or tuna, and/or salmon, and you will save a fortune over, for example, going to one of the older Korean-and-Japanese restaurants in the City that have long been established in Washington. (Today, I did just that; I got my sushi at Rainbow, where there is no seating, but there is a ton of seating a short walk away at Big Mama, all still inside the same Lotte, and at Big Mama I got Tteok mandu guk, and had a Korean-and-Japanese late lunch for a fraction of the cost that I usually have it. It is almost expensive-restaurant quality IF you get the three things I mentioned--spicy tuna rolls, etc.--but I also got the cold eel today--it is my first time here, after all--, which I regret. The eel, that is.) Big Mama remains the best restaurant in this Lotte, with almost-restaurant quality. But, anyway, let me say a couple more things in favor of Rainbow: When I first got here and looked over the selection, and saw the eel and that it was cold, I knew that I would still want to try the eel here (I particularly love eel), but I equally knew that the temperature would make me regret it after I ate it. (This is what happened exactly; I know my stomach and my tongue. I know them very, very well.) So I asked if they could prepare anything anew, price it, and sell it to me then and there. They said they *would*, but when I requested specifically hot eel/unagi, they said "no." So, we know what they *can't* do, namely, anything with heat. But, they can and will prepare and sell pretty much anything *cold.* (I asked because there were sushi chefs preparing new sushi the whole time I was shopping there/figuring out what to get to eat by looking at the open refrigerator. As I said, there are a lot of customers here, so, things are constantly being bought, so the sushi chefs are working the whole day just as they would at a good Japanese restaurant with a poping lunch hour sushi bar. I figured, if they were already preparing things anew, why not prepare a specific order for me? Right?) Anyway, I imagine if the cold sushi is good, the cold sushi *prepared-to-order* will be even better. So, overall it is a good option, if you know what to get. read more

As an out-of-towner, I made it a point to stop by here because of the YELP reviews. While I wouldn't rate it a 5-star, I'm willing to admit I am not an expert or connoisseur of sushi, and perhaps would not appreciate some of the finer notes others might notice. It is a little place inside the produce section of Lotte Plaza with good sushi prices. As another poster said, there's chefs behind the counter, and their display holds a variety of sushi. The chef guys are friendly and polite. The lady ringing you up, not so much. I asked for soy sauce and she muttered something way too low to hear. Then I was summarily dismissed from her attention. I asked again, and she muttered again, and then dismissed me. Because I wasn't sure if she was saying the soy sauce was already there or was directing me to somewhere I could get it, I tried to verify, to which she nodded the soy sauce was already in the bag. (BTW, it's only one packet of soy sauce included in the package which wasn't really enough for me. I wonder why they didn't have a communal grab bucket of the stuff like other places have? Is it THAT expensive?) Frankly, I don't care to deal with employees who are THAT unwilling to help someone who obviously is struggling with the store's process out, but you get what you get in these little shops. To the positive, the man/chef I dealt with the second time there was VERY polite, and VERY nice. What I really like about their sushi is it is not that sickeningly-sweet stuff a lot of grocery stores sell. I don't know why, but the pre-packaged deals seem to go overboard on what? The rice-wine vinegar? I'm not sure. ANYWAY... It was just the right flavour for me... fresh ingredients... well-priced. I'd buy from them again... I love that they are across the street from me. I love that a spicy tuna roll is not overwhelmed with rice and only 3.95 per roll. I love that I can grab all my random Asian veggies and meats in the time it takes them to make our rolls. I love that we can have a home date-night for less than $20 bucks and fall asleep stuffed.
