Overall, pretty disappointing. I get sushi cravings every once in a while, and I just moved to the northeast so I figured I'd give this place a try. It didn't satisfy my craving at all. I got two rolls and they both tasted super mediocre, like something you'd buy packaged from Wynn Dixie. The servers were very nice, but seemed a little absent-minded and I found myself waiting for periods of time for my server to come back to my table. My biggest complaint with this place is the waitress that treated us like garbage. We were a complete bother to her and she constantly threw dishes at us and would walk away as we tried to talk to her. The sushi rolls came out okay but just how you would expect them. If you're looking for quality sushi, goto Sunny's sushi and they will treat you much better and give you better quality rolls. Avoid the server with the red hair and bad attitude on her face. I LOVE good sushi. I've been a fan of a little place in Austin, Texas, where I am originally from, my whole life. Literally no other place has ever compared (not in San Diego, Houston, etc). Hamachi though gives them a run for their money! They are priced really well, and I LOVE that I get a salad with ginger dressing with an order of sushi (I love the salad just as much as the sushi). While the basic sushis are average (cali roll, crunchy roll), the adventurous options are really great (tiger, tornado)! I've already been back twice in one month, and plan on frequenting often! The food here was very good. I have never liked sushi but it had a good flavor. However the service was not good at all. We were sat at our table and it took them a good 5/10 min before they finally came over and took our drink orders and gave us menus. We ordered an appetizer but it wasn't much an appetizer as it was brought out after all the food. We got the food no issues there.. however I ordered a jasmine tea that I never received. What I did notice is that our waitress kept checking in other tables but never checked on us. We sat there for about 15 mins before someone (not out waitress) finally came over and asked us if we needed anything. We ordered a dessert and after 10 min they came over an said they were out.. so for the food I give it 4 stars.. the service in my personal opinion could be better.. if we do go back I will probably only do takeout as most of our time spent there was waiting to be taken care of.. read more

It seems to be impossible to reach someone over the phone to place a to-go order but my dine-in experiences have been a whole lot better than my first experience. We love this place! We have been going here since they opened and the quality of food has always been outstanding. They add new things to their menu every now and then and you can't miss on anything. This place very underwhelming ... only decent, not bad, not good. First, when I went, the service was SO slow. It was so slow in fact, that I wasn't able to order a second round of sushi... I had thought over an hour and 15 minutes before closing was enough (I hate showing up near closing at a place), but by the time we got a table, a single beer (about 15 minutes), and a chance to order (at least another 15 minutes), the waitress said that the sushi bar was closing and that would be our only chance to order. I know it isn't her fault as she was the only waitress there, was working the front desk and payments, had 3-4 tables, and basically did everything herself. But I do blame the restaurant for skimping so much that she is overworked and service suffers. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for those shortcomings. Service was quick. Since it's such a common, if not expected, component of Japanese food, I judge a lot of restaurants by their miso soup and salad. The salad, and dressing, wasn't bad. The vegetables weren't totally fresh but I'm not expecting freshly picked from the garden either. The dressing was a bit too tangy but still okay, passable. The miso soup was actually on-point. Not too salty, not too little or too much tofu or wakame, though it skimped a little bit on the dashi flavoring, but still, personal preference. The wakame was a bit on the slimy side, not terribly fresh and I could tell it was soaking for a little while. As for the main dish, I ordered the chef sashimi A, or something like that. 15 sashimi of the chef's choosing. Overall it wasn't bad but the portions were small, and I don't mean "everything in Texas is huge" small, I mean small for even Japanese portions. Squares instead of rectangles. They gave me yellowtail, salmon, tuna, and some other things. I have never asked "omakase" ("I'll let you handle it) to a chef before, and this instance was more "I don't feel picking something so you pick for me," rather than a "I trust your judgment to give me something good and not your leftover crap" sort. The chefs need to work on their craft a little bit. The flavor and texture were fine, but the preparation needs some work. The little sashimi squares, yes, squares, had some jagged edges from the cut and the daikon shreds beneath it was more like a plate of spaghetti. Of course the fish wasn't terribly fresh and you could tell it had been frozen for a little while, but then I'm in the desert so it's kind of expected. Overall, not too bad, I'm not so sure it was worth the price for what I ordered and what I got. But still, for a dry, landlocked part of the country, not too shabby. read more

I hate to give this place a low review, because decent restaurants in Northeast El Paso are so rare. However, our experience there last night was pretty dismal. We both ordered the bento box with teriyaki chicken. Our miso soup arrived quickly; it was fine, albeit a little cloudier than I prefer. THIRTY-FIVE minutes later, we still did not have our entrees! Other tables were receiving theirs, but not us. We flagged down our server, who said it was coming right up. Five or 10 minutes more after that, still no food and we flagged down a different server, who said, "Let me check." She came right back with our entrees. The tempura was very hot and very greasy; the rest of the bento box was lukewarm. This told me that the whole thing had been sitting there for a while waiting for the tempura. The California rolls looked like they had been made by a child and basically thrown onto the plate; they were falling apart and the rice was not sticking. We had to keep asking for more water, for forks (because there was no way to eat those rolls with chopsticks), and those little dipping bowls for soy sauce and wasabi. As we paid the bill, we spoke to our original server. She apologized, but did not offer any adjustment to the bill. She suggested we come a little earlier next time, when they aren't so busy. How in the hell are we supposed to know that?! Our previous visits were when this place was brand new, so we cut it some slack. But it's been open long enough now to have worked out the kinks. I hope it stays in business, and mostly, I hope it improves. read more

This is my second visit within one week. I absolutely like this place, especially, since it's located in the Northeast. Mike, who is one of the sushi chefs was very approachable and was concerned how we enjoyed our current and past orders. They have an easy menu to order from; e.g., number system. We had this take-out and it was very good. I had the sushi - tempura bento. The sushi was good and the tempura was fresh and crisp, even as take-out. Just FYI, even though tempura comes in the bento, you don't get double tempura in the sushi tempura. My husband had beef teriyaki bento - steak was a bit tough. Ask for extra soy sauce if you like it for your sushi, we only got one packet per meal. read more

This place used to house a Korean restaurant and the redesign is fabulous, though I did not see the bathrooms yet. Pros: Pricing, menu choices---especially sushi variety, ambiance, decor, service, clean, actual sushi bar present Cons: not a good rice day,kept falling out of my sushi pieces You pay the bill at the counter. They gave me my miso soup after I received my squid salad and lion roll. I have to say the squid salad was very good and huge portion! the lion roll was good but I wish I knew it was gonna be that hot ;my fault). I had to wait 5 minutes after finishing all of my food for a waitress to ask how I was doing. had to ask for the check. then again waited 5 more minutes for them to pick up my card... very slow service from waitress but the sushi makers were fast. might try take out next time. read more

Sushi is something I enjoy when I can, usually when I come to visit my aunt in El Paso. And my aunt and I's usual spot wasn't as up to par as it usually was. So we decided to go check this place out, since it's close to her house. It's a small little place that's very casual, and yet there's that slight ambience that you notice--due to the decor of paintings and pictures of their various items. I ordered their "Sushi B" combo, which was a California roll with eight pieces of nigiri. My aunt ordered a Philadelphia roll. The miso soup we enjoyed was actually not too hot and not too cold. And a nice touch was that we each got our own hot tea pot. Our food arrived pretty quick. The California roll was done very well (it can be something that can be messed up easily), but it could have used a little more avocado. And my nigiri sushi was tasty, if looking a little messy. My aunt enjoyed her Philadelphia roll, which is what she usually gets when we have sushi. I am giving a little lower rating than I usually do because of the fact that there were only two waitresses working, and that one of them should have let us know that we had to go up to the front to pay our ticket. That's my only little quibble. We ended up paying $26 for our meal; it would have been a lot more back at our usual place. Will we go back there again if we want sushi or to try one of their noodle dishes? I think so. Hopefully there will be more people working. read more

I eat here at least once a week. Get the philly deep roll, it is amazing. Service is good, small place with a beat atmosphere. Sometimes there's a wait but it is worth it. Other rolls I've loved are the lobster crunch and tiger. Good chicken teriyaki as well but the real reason to eat here is the sushi. read more

Best sushi in northeast El Paso, at least from what I've found so far. However, for the price it's really not life-changing. It's a solid sushi fix though. Our fave is the 911 Roll, which has jalepeno on top. The Jessica Roll and the Lemon Roll are also good choices. Almost everything has a "California Base" which means a imitation crabmeat filling, and I find that rather repetitive and boring. But it's a good bet for sure! Decent miso soup and udon. It's kind of expensive. Even picking up to go it's hard not to spend $50 to feel two adults a kid. read more

Well, I went there because Matsuhara is closed on Monday. As another reviewer has noted, it is a clean and pleasant little restaurant. The service was good, but the sushi was just so-so. It is a Korean run restaraunt and lacks the authenticity that I'm always seeking. The quality of the sushi was just a tad better than what I can find in a supermarket.. I ordered Hamachi (they were out of), Maguro, Salmon and Kani. I hate to give two stars because it is a pleasant and from what I could tell, a well-run place, but the sushi really lacked. If they would provide better cuts of fish, I would change my rating. read more

My girlfriend and I stopped in during a late afternoon lunch and were pleasantly surprised by a broad sushi menu and bento box selection. My girlfriend and I love sushi and didn't think we'd find a joint here in the desert. The sushi rolls are non-traditional and some are even baked, but they are good and the presentation is very good. Absolutely the worst service in a restaurant ever! The waitress forgot to bring our drinks, never gave us menus, got the orders wrong! I mean they could not get anything right. The sushi rolls are stuffed with extra rice!!! At the end they gave us are bill while still eating. We were no where near done eating, as if they wanted us to hurry and leave. The waitress even started picking up are plates. We Left a message on a napkin saying how rude they are. I would never go back to a place like this!!! So I got here at 2:30 and the hostess said they were closed already until 5. To make matter worst they weren't suppose to close until 3 and she said it would be 30 mins for a take out. That is completely unacceptable. I love sushi I just hope that I can find a place in El Paso that has better service than that. read more
