Classic old fashioned burger joint. I love the history behind it. The staff that take your order and give you your order are always kind and friendly. They often remember us (because we have our dog with us) and make small talk. The burgers are greasy (isn't that part of the charm here?) and the cheese fries hit the spot (plus there's a HUGE amount in an order). But, I must say, the reason we keep going back is for the soft serve. It's the best around. A chocolate/vanilla twist cone can make my day! It's not super creamy like some of the other places around - perfect cone. Know that they are closed on Sundays - which is usually when I get a craving for a cone! :) read more

Love this place when you want a burger that is like McDonalds but isn't McDonald's. This is the place to go. The double burger is great but if you want alittle more meat go for the big burger. Everything is made to order. The only thing you cannot get is grilled onions, okay I have never asked. But it doesn't need it the regular onions are perfect. The fries and onion rings are good too. The malts and shakes are also very good but haven't gotten one in a while. FYI location is seasonally so check before you go if in October. read more

So, I happened upon the Yelp listing for Hamburger Heaven late, while looking up the listing on another nearby place. When I say late, I'm talking 20 years or so after my first and last visit there for lunch, both of which took place on the same day. This is a cult joint for Elmhurst area denizens (my cousin Lynn being among that crowd). The best thing about the place is the root beer. As for being "Hamburger Heaven" - eh - not so much. Would much rather have week's worth of sacks of White Castle Cheeseburgers or a lone double cheeseburger from The Spot drive-in in Kenosha, WI than a year's worth of free burgers from this un-heavenly burger joint. "Hamburger Heaven" is one place that lives off tradition. I've wanted to write a Yelp review about Hamburger Heaven for some time and I agree with a lot of the reviewers, Hamburger Heaven is just meh. I live just down the road from the place and have had numerous food menu items and nothing has WOW'ed me. Their olive burger is just OK. The burger comes off as a Big Mac with olives. Fries are what satisfies my salty taste buds, but add on olives to a burger and I get too much saltiness. The ambience and location of this place doesn't really appeal to me. I usually sit down at one of the shaded picnic tables and I feel the traffic noise is just irritating. In the evening I see numerous people lined up for ice cream, so I know Hamburger Heaven does well and has a loyal following. I would put Hamburger Heaven in the same category as Super Dawg, Billy Goat Tavern and Gene and Judes hot dogs; all local iconic dives that live off tradition and nostalgia. read more

Hamburger Heaven is a great place if you want a cheap burger and amazing shakes and malts. Located on the corner of North Ave and York Rd, it's usually fairly busy. I absolutely LOVE their milkshakes. The root beer shake is the way to go! You get a very good potion for the price, and the shakes are extremely creamy and thick. If you are craving ice cream or root beer, grab one! I had the fried shrooms, and they were a little on the "too greasy" side, but they were very good. A generous portion for the price. The cheeseburger comes with 2 patties, and all the fixings. The burger to me wasn't anything special. It was very bland, but a definite quick cure for my hunger blues. The people are very friendly and the wait times are fast. They offer picnic tables outside with a view of the roadways. If your looking for a fun nostalgic experience, this is the place to go. If your looking for really good food, then this is not the place to go to. The burger is consistent with an ordinary fast food burger and the fries are decent crinkle cut frozen fries. The root beer has a strong vanilla taste but it is not very carbonated. Experience tells me that when you are hungry and drive by a rundown shack on the side of the road called Hamburger Heaven, you stop immediately and have lunch. No matter how long you have to wait in line. Hamburgers are admittedly McDonalds-esque, but somehow not nasty? Thin patties with special sauce and squishy bread. It's 10:30 on a saturday morning, I'm very hungover with the talking heads floating through my head: well, how did I get here? A saturday off isn't supposed to be in elmhurst, but yet, it is. Hamburgers here are not so heavenly! I've been living in town for several years now and finally decided to get my butt out of the car and give this joint a whirl. I have fond memories of this place from high school and I've been thinking about going back the past few trips to visit the parents. The last trip into Elmhurst we set out on an all family excursion despite the so-so reviews on yelp. The reviews are right on. The burgers were alright - nothing special to write home about. They burger reminded me of a Big Mac but without the satisfaction. I will give HH props for the suggestion of green olives on the burger as I had never heard that before and it was an interesting twist. The cheese fries were good but I was left longing for fries from the jukebox shaped establishment across town. I'd say give it a shot. I decided to support a local business today and my son has been asking to try this place for a long time. Since this is an outdoor joint I had no problem ordering and waiting outside, also a good idea due to the quarantine order. Not quite sure where the line started but eventually a voice on the telecom asked to take my order. I was the third person in line so I thought this would be pretty quick. Two numbers in front of me were called out, but then about 4 other people received their orders ahead of me, 2 of which were call ins. When the Door Dash dude received his order, I noticed that I had been standing there for 15 minutes waiting on 4 hot dogs and a fry. How long does that take? When I asked about my order after 2 orders behind me received their food, I was asked to wait another minute, then was told that they were "redoing my fries". The hot dogs ended up slopped up with way too much mustard and long shredded onions, not what I expected from a place that seems like a regular hot dog joint. I never complain about things like this but for the cost, the wait, the quality and NO apology for the experience I was way beyond disappointed. I should have stuck with Strats, or Mickey's in Villa Park. They know how to make a decent hot dog....seriously, how can you make it such a difficult experience?!?! read more

It's been years since I had the burgers and rootbeer here and was reminded why, today, when I stopped by. I would not walk across the street for this food. I'm a huge hot dog and burger joint fan and am always looking for the next best thing. I've been driving past this location for years and finally got the chance to stop for a bite with my wife. I should have kept going. We ordered a few hot dogs, cheese fries, and root beer. The skinny dogs were overloaded with mustard and bad relish, fries were not fresh, and the root beer was warm, flat and watery. I anticipated the dogs not being anything special by the lackluster demeanor of the staff, but the root beer is their claim to fame! I expected much better. First off - for a place called Hamburger Heaven, their hamburgers are pretty dull - thin patties, lots of bun, and no sliced tomatoes or pickles, or onion. They are not greasy, and taste okay, but that's all the faint praise I can muster. Next time I go, I may order the 1/3 lb. hamburger, just to see if I can taste the meat more than bun. The fries are good - very potatoe-y and well cooked. What I really like at this place is the root beer floats - get the big ones, and you will be sipping happily for a long time. The limited picnic table seating is all outside, and the bored teens manning the takeout window don't like you, but they get the job done fast. I used to eat at HH pretty regularly when I lived in Wood Dale and I loved the double cheeseburgers. I moved further away and had not been there in about 3 years before I went today. One of the distinctive things about the double burgers used to be the very thinly sliced mild onions on the burgers. Today I got regular slices of red onions. I actually like red onions but they completely changed the flavor of the classic double cheeseburger. Also the cheese seemed different to me. I don't know how many times I've passed by Hamburger Heaven but it has been a lot. I finally made a stop yesterday to see what it's all about and let's just say it wasn't bad! For a little corner spot it had a pretty large menu. I ordered a polish, tots, and root beer and J ordered a Chicago style dog and a vanilla soft serve in a cup. The highlights were definitely the polish, tots, and soft serve. The root beer tasted like artificial vanilla and cream soda but then again I'm extremely picky when it comes to root beer since I love it. The hotdog was a bit underwhelming, nothing wrong with it but nothing made it stand out either. My polish was pretty tasty and had a nice char on the outside which gave it a little texture and the tots were hot and perfectly crisp on the outside. This isn't a bad joint if you're in the mood for some quick, lowkey junk food. I'll most likely be back in the summer since it's really close! read more

Being an avid fan of diners, drive-ins and dives, I *really* wanted to like this place, but after my fourth visit, I'm done. The food is consistently luke-warm which is particularly a problem when they serve you a red hot with cold sauerkraut. The burger with olives sounds like a great idea, but as others have posted, it's a salt bomb - and I consider salt my favorite food group. If you love mayonnaise, then you'll like their McD's-style special sauce otherwise it's just plain gross but that might just be due to the sloppy preparation that goes into just about everything they serve here.
