They celebrated their 70 yr anniversary this year. Of course I paid them a visit. I've been a fan for a few decades. They've been on Chicago's Best TV and now accept credit cards and offer delivery with GrubHub. Still my go-to is the double decker cheeseburger. Wish they had tarter sauce though. Hamburger Heaven just gets a big "eh" from me. I think people that love it have just had it around in their lives for so long they are mesmerized by the memories it gives them. The exterior is straight out of a 1950's teen movie. Brick with neon signs, you place your order at a window (no going inside) and then you get to eat in your car or take it home. there are no tables. Pretty cute and unusual for this intersection in Elmhurst, (which sports a lot of new strip-mall type businesses like Panera and CVS) BTW they are NOT open year round! I think its just from May-September. Things like hamburgers, Italian beef and hot dogs are the norm here. When I worked in the area a while back, I would stop sometimes to get a soft-serve cone, which are very nice on a hot day and pretty inexpensive. Someone told me that the french fries were the house specialty and should not be missed. When I ordered them I got not the thick, hand-cut, skin-on fries I had imagined, but crinkle fries that were on par with Ore-Ida. The "Red Hot" was nothing more than a basic hot dog slathered with yellow mustard, green pickle relish and ketchup (!!! I thought that wasn't allowed in Illinois!!!! Ketchup! On a hot dog! Horrors!) I guess if you are in the area and are hungry, then its an OK place to stop. But I don't recommend making a special trip. Its not that great. read more

After spending time with great company at the Yelp Wine & Vine event in downtown Elmhurst, I was driving home and spotted this little corner shack before hitting the expressway. I had already eaten too much but I can always find room for dessert...and sure did this time around. I got a medium ice cream cone, with twist flavoring of course (chocolate/vanilla). It was delicious and sadly enough, reminded me of McDonald's ice cream---machine ice cream is all the same unless the temperature is off. But I loved the little walk-up burger stand. Also the root beer barrel is uniquely cool. Next time I'm in that area I'd love to give a rootbeer float and triple-decker burger a whirl! I wish I had a Hamburger Heaven near my house as a kid...although I'd probably be much heavier if that were the case. read more

Hamburger Heaven? We shall see! I've gotta be honest...if it weren't for the yummy and plentiful green olives on the burger I would have given Hamburger Heaven 2 stars. And had their root beer actually lived up to the hype they would have gotten 4 stars. Bustling downtown Elmhurst has sprouted up all around Hamburger Heaven since it first opened in 1948. I do like this type of hole-in-the-wall local stop where you sit on picnic tables and chow down. The burger patties are a bit small, probably why you get two of them Big Mac style. They were generous with the toppings though, so that was a plus. AND you have the option of adding green olives to your burger! Say what?!? I've never heard of such a thing! Since I'm a dirty martini kind of girl I was all about adding the green olives. This made an okay burger totally yum-o. I was disappointed in my other two items: the fries and the root beer - both of which have been given some hype as to how great they are. While the fries were cooked to crispy perfection they are just the regular old frozen crinkle fries you can buy at the grocery store. The root beer, while I could taste it was definitely creamy, it was also definitely flat. And that was the consensus amongst my dining companions - flatter than a pancake. Time to check the carbonated water line... There is no indoor seating so if you're coming here do it in fair weather or plan on taking it to go. And if you come during peak lunch hour plan on waiting in a long line to place your order. I'm not writing this place off, though. The green olives will most certainly draw me back, though I'll probably go for the quarter pounder next time. And I'm willing to give the root beer another shot. So I've passed this corner a million times. I figured I would finally give it a try. Based on the cashiers burger recommendation, I ordered a Double Double Cheese, everything on it and an order of fries. $8.20 total cost. Wait time was reasonable about 8 minutes. Fries were very very well done and the burger was a step above a McDonald's Big Mac. Unfortunately I was not impressed at all. Their beef patties are super small and thin. Bought a Strawberry Banana malt and it tasted like a vanilla shake. It was pink but could not taste any strawberry or banana. Burger was OK. Tasted similar to a McDonald's or Burger King burger patty. Better toppings than a BK or McD. The fries were really good. Just the right amount of salt and crispness. I can totally see that this place has a longstanding history within Elmhurst and is likely frequented by locals and college students. I decided to give them a try and was disappointed. I felt that the burger pretty much tasted like a McDonald's burger. There really isn't anywhere where you can sit and enjoy your meal unless you walk over to Starbucks and use their seating. For what it is, this place is a five!!! Perhaps the very best French fries I have EVER eaten. I made the mistake of getting a hot dog at a place known for their burgers. Hamburger Hell. Me and the Mrs stopped by because, as a child, her father would take her past this well-known establishment. So having attended a near-by flea market on a very humid day, we looked for some place to actually eat outside, as we're near the end of the Protocol lockdown for our area. So for 40+ years wanting to stop by here, we drove out of our way to eat here. We went on a very non-busy Sunday, about 1:30pm after being out in the hot sun most of the morning and very hungry. The order taker was very friendly and polite. When we received our food, the Mrs saw that the burger had cheese on it and she did not recall ordering it that way. She was about to bite the bullet and was very reluctant to do anything about it when I told her to talk to the order taker as this was not acceptable. The polite order taker said that she had gotten what we requested. In other words, the customer at this place, is NOT always right. I'm sure the nearby Culver's, McDonald's, Arby's and other establishments would NOT have treated her this way, no matter who made an error. The hamburger did not stand out in any way and same for the bag of fries. Both were below par when compared to other places we'd been to. The only caveat is they did nothing bad to the drinks we consumed The bill came to $22 and we could've walked down a few blocks to the Chipolte's and had a much better experience while eating much healthier food. Our mistake! All-in-all, I'll always remember the 1 and only time I've been to Hamburger Heaven, now having NOT regretted all the time passing this place and not stopping by. How this establishment survived all these years is another mystery that I will never solve as i won't be back. I like the milk shakes at Hamburger Heaven, that's about it though. I have had the soft serve in the past ..it is no better or worse than what you get at Dairy Queen. I would give 4 stars for the milk shake, but must stick with 2 stars, this place is closed on Sunday's! Life must be good for the owners. they are only open half the year, and then close on Sunday's. .. I have been here before, that was 2005. As I remember, the place had great root beer floats. Always wanted to try the other things they offered. Here we go September 15th, 2021, I decided to come here with a friend of mine. Quite embarrassing, actually! He ordered a shake with chocolate ice cream, they gave him one with vanilla... No biggie, just go up and get it taken care of, right? Not so much, this older lady working there said "the order was given to me that way" in other words, she was basically telling him too bad. Originally, we were going to just let it fly. You shouldn't have to pay for something you didn't order. He went back up to have them get what he ordered. Crabby old lady proceeded to insult him by saying " she read the order to you and you ok'd it, I'll remake it this time, just throw your old shake out." You know? Lousy customer service will cost you many customers. I used to like this place, the shakes were good, albeit expensive, but, I won't be back. It's really a shame. An Elmhurst institution that's been there since 1948 treating customers poorly. That's just pitiful. This lady was being rude to several other customers as well. Demanding elderly customers to show their receipts for their orders, and saying it's "policy". Lady, nobody gives a shit about your policy. I'd understand if it were a bustling time, but, it wasn't. I work in the area and my friend's and I are always looking for a new place to check out for lunch. After a while, you get sick of the typical chain restaurants and you start to branch out. That's how we ended up at Hamburger Heaven on a Friday afternoon. We'd driven past it a million times but the weather was nice so we decided to venture out. The menu is pretty comprehensive and daunting. Luckily, while we were trying to interpret the menu someone took pity on us. A friendly gentleman suggested the Double Decker with Cheese. He told us he'd been eating here for 30 years and that was his favorite thing on the menu. So we were sold! 30 years of burgers means that this should've been a solid burger. And it was. It was a solid, greasy burger. Not a gourmet burger like all the burger places in the city are doing - just your standard burger. Juicy patties with lettuce, onions, and ketchup. Solid. The kind of meal that you know what you're getting and you're never disappointed. It's been a while since I've had a burger like that. The fries were also delicious as well as the onion rings. The root beer was also delicious. It would taste even better in a float. Overall, I was definitely satisfied with my meal here and I definitely plan on coming back one day. read more

Hamburger Heaven in Elmhurst has been in business since 1948. I remember driving by them while on North Avenue, heading toward Elmhurst since I was a little kid. Their famous logo of a "hamburger with angel wings" has always been a famous landmark for me. I remember when I was younger that they had really good root beer and root beer floats. I do not have many memories of Hamburger Heaven in regards to their hamburgers. I decided it was well overdue to give them a try and see if the hamburger was as good as I hoped it was. When you arrive at Hamburger Heaven you order at an outside window and pick up at another. They are only open for the warmer months. They close when it gets colder in late fall and closer to winter. I looked over the menu that was beside the window to order. I noticed that they added a lot of new burgers from what I remember. I wanted to be adventurous, but decided on their staple burger called the "Big Chez". It consisted of ketchup, lettuce, mayo, mustard, relish, and onion with American cheese. I also ordered a side of fries and, of course, a large root beer. I did not have to wait too long for my order, which took about 5-7 minutes. I will say I do not know if it was commonplace, but the staff was not very friendly or welcoming. I grabbed my bag of food and noticed the only seating that they had was a couple of tables and chairs on the side of the building. I decided to instead go eat in my car. I first tried the fries. My first bite was satisfying. They had a nice crunch and tasted fresh. I then took a bite of the burger and it was very underwhelming. I noticed that there was no seasoning whatsoever. I wanted to make sure about this and asked a worker how they seasoned their burgers. I was told they add nothing, not even salt or pepper. I also found a video on YouTube of when the show "Chicago's Best" showed how they make their burgers and again they showed they add nothing to the meat. I really wanted to like the hamburgers, but the burgers were far from heavenly. I will say the fries were very good and the root beer was delicious. I can recommend this place for their desserts, like the rootbeer floats, but I cannot recommend Hamburger Heaven for anything else. read more

Decided to try this corner carry out only restaurant with claim to fame of hamburger and root beer. Went for the double decker hamburger which may be a precursor to the Big Mac ... which comes with "mix" of (mayo/relish/mustard) and ketchup (????). I went nix ketchup + chili (.75c) and a small root beer which based on size when looking in was 16/24/32 oz. Double decker was 2 - 2 oz patties (not seen until after ordering) with 3 buns. 2.5 oz patties are necessary as thin which is fine but don't cover the bun. Mix is good on burger and Chili was a good addition if not heading to somewhere that requires clean hands and shirt (eater depending). Root beer was average at best though part of claim to fame. I've had plenty due to microbrews having their own. Burger was good minus above knock downs. Quick service as just opened. Can be tough to get into/out of as on busy corner, depending on which way coming/going. Give it a try, but not if need to u-turn or cross 3 lanes of traffic coming/going. read more

Heaven is stretching it a bit, but I'll give it maybe the third level of Heaven, which I learned from Wikipedia is "Shehaqim." Still possibly misleading since Shehaqim is the place with the manna. You order a basic burger and get something resembling a Big Mac - a double with sauce and other similar toppings. Having no connection to the area other than the fact that I work down the street I thought it was just okay I got a cheeseburger (I guess the default option is a double?), fries, and a root beer. The cheeseburger and fries were fine, but not exceptional and really not noticeably better than what you'd get at McDonald's. The root beer, for which Richardson's is known, was a huge disappointment. It was really weak and watery. I don't get the hype. Hamburger Heaven is also a bit too expensive given the quality; my lunch was a little over $6. All in all I wasn't impressed. The little stand is cute and quirky and it's nice to see independent places like this still exist, but I won't be making a special effort to trek here for lunch and I'd certainly never go out of my way for it. read more

Having spotted Hamburger Heaven on previous drives through Elmhurst, we took advantage of the lovely weather Saturday to explore downtown Elmhurst and have some lunch. While Hamburger Heaven is not the omg-orgasmic-best-ever burgers, they are made fresh, juicy and very good. As I told my husband, it's like a Big Mac would be if it were actually GOOD. Next time I'll ask for extra pickles and no mayo, though. The fries were tasty, again, not *amazing* but very solid. The root beer float was deeeelicious. I had lust in my heart. It's all I could think about. The thought of a root beer float, the way I had always remembered them at Hamburger Heaven, burned in my brain. I was like a crazy woman. Was this hormonal? So, not good. My car got me there like it was pre-programmed. I even refrained from pushing those in line into the seemingly endless York Road traffic and waited my turn. I proudly ordered my root beer float; the kind my Dad and I used to have together, smiling the whole time. In went the straw, then the first drag, and then ... complete and utter disappointment. What has happened? I will admit, the root beer was very good; but I think it was the ice cream. Gone was the fabulous, custard ice cream that made this drink. It had gone from memorable to mediocre. My advice, go to Culver's; then the custard ice cream will stand on its own merits; and drink yourself into complete nirvana. read more

Burgers are pre-made (frozen?) disc patties and frankly just not all that great. The root beer is quite good and the crinkle cut fries are pretty solid. However if you can't deliver on the burger itself, those just become an after thought. I suppose if you went here as a kid and enjoyed the experience then the burger might not matter as much. First of all I NEVER eat at Mcdonalds!! I love the burgers here, They are not gross and greasy and don't have the obvious char-grilled artifical flavoring of some "other" fast food places. The burgers are more light and airy NOT big fat and greasy and I love that about them. The Root-beer is really good, the fries are really salty and the combo of the two with the hamburger is addictive. The only negative comment i have is that they don't do refill of any kind with their drinks. read more
