The last two times I've been here I've felt disappointed with the food. I used to think of these as phenomenal burgers - almost like a Big Mac when those were still good, but during this past visit a few days ago I found the quality of the beef to be lacking. There were hard fatty pieces in the meat I had to spit out and the flavor was just meh. For $7, I would expect better, and heck, charge me $10 but make the burger GREAT instead of making me wish I had gotten Culver's instead. I want to support small businesses, but not when prices increase while quality goes down. Even the onion rings didn't have their previous pizzazz. Having visited this place in the 90s, I was told it was the best place to get burgers in Elmhurst. Last week, I invited a friend to try the famous burger since he'd never had one before. A lesson on how to lose customers and NOT run a business: Returned, after a year off, to Hamburger Heaven in Elmhurst to see if maybe they'd awakened and straightened up their act. They hadn't Interaction when trying to order at the window at 11:30 a.m. with no other customers waiting: Me: I'll have (sandwich) will you please toast the bun? Employee in Window: We don't do that. Me: I don't understand, I've been coming here for decades and since they stopped putting all the buns in a toaster to warm and crisp them 15 years ago, I've asked them to do that and they've put the bread on the hot griddle for a half minutes to do that. Employee in Window: We can't communicate with the cooks to do that. Me (pointing two cooks at the grill station 8 feet inside): They're right there, why can't you just tell them? There's no one here and they're just standing there! Employee: We don't do that! Me: As a customer for years, can't you just do that for me? You're not busy now and it adds not 1 cent in cost to you? Employee: That's the way it comes! Do you want it the way it comes, or not? [I could have walked away, but I'd driven 5 miles in (foolish) hopes to see if things had improved at this establishment which has sadly slipped South, in quality and service, for the past decade, so I paid, got my sandwich in about 2 minutes and in eating it experienced the unmistakable taste of cold, tasteless bread that dissolved in the mouth in a glutenous mass, with an aftertaste. The beef patties were sorta warm and the cheese was melted. [I'd asked for a little bit extra of the delicious sauce they use and when I got to my car saw that extra teaspoon had added about 8% to the cost of my sandwich! I drove off, once again shaking my head as to how clueless the owners, managers and employees appear to be and how easy it would be to fix the myriad quality and service issues of the place, if only they figured out simple things and put in a little more effort. FYI if you're going to come here they are seasonal and close up for the winter after December 23rd, so if you're planning on coming out here it better be soon or wait until next year. You'll probably never be able to guess what they sell @ Hamburger Heaven (duhhh). Hamburgers, hamburgers & hamburgers.....Quite a large selection of hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, fries, floats, shakes, malts, sundaes all healthy good nutritious food NOT, but at least good inexpensive food. This is not your sit down restaurant as it's all carry out or dine at the outdoor picnic tables scattered around an outdoor deck & behind the restaurant in the back. I guess that's why it seasonal. This was the first time I have ever been here and the menu selection is fairly large so it can be a bit overwhelming. They have the original & their signature burgers. I chose one of their signature burgers - a 1/3 lb Sunrise burger w/bacon, a fried egg and American cheese (I substituted melted Colby cheese cause for me everything is better w/cheddar. This burger was only $6.75. The meat was plentiful, but nothing flavor wise that wowed me. The bacon is always a good add on anything as was the melted Colby cheese and fried egg. There were no condiments which left the burger a little dry for my taste and I had to go up & ask for ketchup to make it a little tastier. That being said it was a decent burger, but nothing that wowed me, but the price point stunned me that a 1/3lb burger was only $6.75. As I said they had a fairly large menu (a little overwhelming) with a decent burger at a great price. I will be back to try some of the other options. read more

I'd been meaning to come here for a while; I have a real weakness for root beer. As a vegetarian, I figured I'd be able to get maybe some onion rings - surprise, they have a veggie burger. (It's Dr. Praeger's.) Apparently the veggie burger gets a better bun than the regular hamburgers; to my surprise, it came on a high-quality pretzel bread bun. If I stop by again, I'll pay extra for tomato; the burger tasted a bit naked with just lettuce (I held the onions) and their weird mixed-together sauce. Would probably ask them to go light on the sauce. I have to concur with others that the onion rings are pretty flavorless and have a weird coating. Sadly the much-vaunted root beer was flat and not very flavorful, though it might be fine in a float. Nostalgia and prices run high at Hamburger Heaven. Hands down the best thing on the menu is the burgers. I personally like the double-decker. Good tasting beef and well cooked. The buns are good too. None of the sides are anything to write home about. They're standard fries. Okay onion rings and mushroom poppers. NOT bad by any means, but, not what you come here for. Shakes are great. No way around it. Great shakes and rootbeer floats. Richardson's root beer is very creamy, which isn't my favorite type of root beer, but, it goes exceptionally well with a burger here. One tip, you can call your order in advance. Makes waiting a bit shorter. Again, BURGERS are good. Everything is just a bit overpriced for me to give 5 stars. read more

No thank you. I was super excited because I LOVE burgers!! The place looks bad but whatever. That didn't bother me I got the longhorn burger. I didn't like the BBQ, my bacon was chewy and stringy, my onions were clearly raw not grilled, and the Swiss cheese was just Way Too much! Hurt my teeth. Upset fix it was so expensive, I expected it to be good. My husband just got a dbl cheese and That regular cheaper burger was much better tasting. Still not at all special though. I went to this place with my family. The burgers were great and the fries were good too. The burgers are easy to bite into and have a good size. The service was great because all toppings were free and extra straws were provided. The ambiance of the place works well because they play nice music outside and it has an older feel to it even though you order outside the place and eat outside because they do not have an eating area. It was my first time coming here and I enjoyed their food very much. The staff made sure my order was correct and that made me feel a lot more secure on my order. I saw the other reviews were low because of their quality of food and the price, I would have to disagree. I ordered a big bacon burger with cheese and the signature longhorn burger. I was absolutely blown away with the taste and would highly recommend both of them. I will say the fries were a little dry, but I just put salt and it made it better. Unfortunately, I did witness a very rude customer complaining that why he needs his receipt when he ordered not too long ago. The staff tried to explain their policy saying that it is mandatory to show the number of your recipes that way you get your correct order. But this guy always talking over her and not even listening to what she had to say. I heard her apologizing to him but he didn't even care. This joint is on the corner of York and North Ave in Elmhurst. A throwback to old days when you just order and wait when your order is ready for pick up. No other place to sit down and enjoy your burger. You got to have a big voice to make your order due to the busyness of the street corner. When we got there, there's a substantial amount of people ordering and waiting for their food. I got the double decker which was good and the buns are pretty tasty. Aside from that, its was okay. I feel so lucky I found this place. Was a little turned around and in between one place and another and looking for a non-chain fastish food place and I passed by this relic from the 1960s. It seemed familiar, I'm pretty sure I was here as a teenager. Whether I was or not, it hasn't changed in years, I know this for a fact because there was a local high school reunion, class of 1977 and or 1987, and a random assortment of alumni were bumping into each other in line here. I really like a place that is so consistent that people who have been away for a lifetime get emotional when familiar aromas and tastes evoke fond memories. There's nothing healthy about this All-American burger and hot dog joint. But there is just no denying this food is good. It's a summer spot, though they are open spring through fall. Don't eat in your car, it's too messy. Eat at one of their picnic tables, think about your first car, your first girlfriend, and maybe later you can worry about low density lipoproteins. read more

Man I love this place, have been going for years since I live in Wood Dale. It's always a local to visit in spring when they open. They recently renovated their outdoor seating which was very welcome. I love the root beer, and have a weakness for ordering 2 burgers - a double and a single. If you're a fan of olives, try the olive burger. It's strange in a really fun way that I very much enjoyed. The place is fun with its retro aesthetic. I live in Lincoln Park Chicago, and I had to go out to the suburbs today, so I stopped at this place on the way home. It was awful. Very over priced, you get nothing with your cheeseburger. I ordered extra pickles, and I get this teenie, little sliver, in was wrapped in a French fry bag, and I get charged extra for it . I won't be back. The place is a rip off. There are too many by far, of other hamburger, hot dog joints that are much better, and you don't get ripped off. And I noticed on the bottom of the receipt. They have a poor customer service standard. No refunds, you're stuck what you got. You either eat it, or take the food, and throw it away. read more

I really wish I could do better here with my review. I was in the area and decided I was in the mood for a chocolate malt. This place has been around for years and what better a spot to go to in order to fulfill my liquid sweet tooth. It wasn't hard to upsell me on the extra large size. Decided not to get anything else as it's outdoor seating only and any meal would have been best eaten on site - but it was a chilly day. So a brief wait and off I went in my car with the malted milk I was looking so forward to. But that's where it came to an end. If there was malt in that shake, I didn't detect any. I'm sure this is a local favorite. It has a great corner location and the site seems to have a lot of history. That's great! The food however is only just ok. I decided to try this place out at the recommendation of a friend. Parking was easy given rush hour when I went. There wasn't a long line. The staff were friendly and I received my order fairly quickly. However, the food was basic. The burger, despite its piles of extras, tasted like something I could make at home. I had the longhorn burger by the way. The fries were the wavy type that always taste like a school cafeteria fries no matter where I go. The fried mushrooms I also had were no better or worse then any others I've ever had. I also tried the 'red hot' hot dog. Yeah it was decent, but nothing amazing. The only thing I ordered that kind of surprised me was the specialty root beer they serve, but even that was not worth driving all the way out there for. What did impress me was the amount of variety in there menu. They had some interesting options that should appeal to a large group eating together. Also, the prices for their food are at least on par with their quality. You can get quite a meal and not spend a lot. So I do appreciate that. All in all I'm sure this is a nice little local hamburger joint with lots of history. But is it something to go out of your way for?...I wouldn't say that. On the corner of North Avenue and York Road in Elmhurst sits a building that harkens back to days long before I was born. This 40s/50s style corner eatery brightly advertises Root beer, Ice Cream and Hamburgers. Over the years I've stopped here a handful of times and tried a variety of items so I'd like to take some time and cover not just what I had on my most recent visit. But also things I've had on previous visits. First off, since it's called Hamburger Heaven let's go over the hamburger. Well, it's not exactly heavenly, in fact It reminds me a lot of McDonalds burger. The double decker burger here is a lot like a big mac. It's a thin patty double cheeseburger with a piece of bread in the middle. It wasn't bad, but definitely different than one might expect to see from a mom and pop fast food joint. Next off is the hot dog/red hot. The hot dog here is served on a somewhat dry non-poppy seed bun. The sausage itself was skinless and well heated. There was no pickle slice or spear included. It had long slices of onion rather than chopped onions as found on most Chicago area hot dogs. The application of mustard and relish was fine and both were suitable brands for this type of dog. There were also quite a few sport peppers on the dog which added a good amount of heat. Simply put, this was an average hot dog. Since they advertise it right on the top of the building, the next thing to cover here is the Root Beer. The root beer had a flavorful body, not a lot of froth and not a lot of bite. I liked it, it's definitely better than most canned or bottled root beer. Finally I'll cover the ice cream here. I've had both an ice cream cone and a shake here. The ice cream here is fairly run of the mill soft serve. But on a hot day in downtown Elmhurst it was inecpensive and hit the spot. The milkshake was quite thick and was more ice cream than milk. Overall I thought it was a pretty good milkshake and the cone was decent and you get quite a bit of ice cream on that cone for the money (easily double a McDonalds cone, so the value is there). Overall, I like Hamburger Heaven, it has a wonderful late 40s early 50s era look to it. It's a neat place to visit and has a fantastic charm to the building and grounds itself. The Root Beer and ice cream make it worth visiting but the regular food isn't anything special. Overall, I'm going to give Hamburger Heaven three stars. It's worth visiting but nothing spectacular. read more

It probably didn't hurt that I ate here for lunch on a Friday, on what was arguably the nicest day of 2014 (so far). The excellent root beer, the hefty portion of fries, and what I felt was a delicious cheeseburger made for one happy Yelp reviewer. Yes, their signature 'double-decker' burger is in many ways like a Big Mac, but it's not processed the same way that a corporate giant like Mickey D's would. This place has been around since 1948 (just a few years after WWII), and not much has changed since. Everything is a-la-carte, and prices are very reasonable. The special sauce on the burgers gives it a certain 'je ne sais quoi' that I loved. SPOILER ALERT: the special sauce is essentially honey mustard+tartar sauce/1000 island dressing. 4 1/2 stars for the experience. BUT WAIT! Bonus star awarded for: sheer persistence in the face of adversity. Hamburger Heaven has endured being in business for decades despite threats (and significant financial compensation, I'm sure) from Elmhurst to raze the location, and build something new on its corner lot.....probably another fucking Walgreens or Chik-Fil-A. But nope, they gave the big 'up yours' to the township and continued running a little ma-and-pa burger stand on a slice of prime North Ave & York Road real estate. These guys get an extra star (we're up to 5.5 stars now) for being just --that-- stubborn. It's a must-go during the summer months. On behalf of all the kids who will enjoy a soft serve cone here on an early August evening after a little league baseball game..... For all the junior high school couples that'll come here on a first date because it's fun and easygoing and it's all they can afford..... For all the old folks who'll come back to Hamburger Heaven to relive simpler times and remind them of the days when they were in middle school..... ....I thank you for not caving in and selling. The appreciation shows in the tens of thousands of smiles that'll you see here between now and October. read more

This wasn't the best burger I've ever had but it was definitely decent. For me, it was more like a great burger you would find at your neighbor's bbq party. The sesame bun seemed pretty basic, but the meat was cooked well and had good flavor overall. I can tell it's a local favorite and will definitely be back for some ice cream and root beer floats. read more

This is an Elmhurst icon. Is it great, not really, but that doesn't mean you should try it. The reviews are mixed. I know some people who love it. A friend who comes in from California (went to Elmhurst College) loves to stop here when she's back in town. Since, I think there are better burgers in town I generally get the corn dog. Yes, that's right, the corn dog. I'm like 99% sure this is the only place in town where you can get one. Margin of error - plus or minus 100%. Also, I occasionally get the butterscotch malt. As Yoda might say, "Healthy, not is place for diet." Worst bathroom in Elmhurst according to my son. As of this writing there are ninety-six restaurants in Elmhurst.
