I love that there's a place near campus that serves hearty diner food. Here you can find the kind of fast, simple breakfast that is just a little too oily and buttery but all the more delicious for it! We ordered: + ham and cheese omelet (comes with your choice of grits or home fries -- I ordered the Home fries with green pepper. I liked the dish! It's just what you would expect, nothing fancy, but it fills you up in a feel-good way) + 2 eggs with beef sausage (my boyfriend ordered this, also with home fries. Now that I am spending more time at the USCIS building on 41st Street, and the immigration interviews and other proceedings start as early at 8:00 am, I need a place to cool my jets over coffee or breakfast while I wait to be heard. I learned long ago that it is better to arrive early and wait for court or other meetings, than to deal with heavier traffic later in the morning, and risk arriving late. Today, I asked one of the guards in the security area where to go for coffee until the public was allowed into the building at 7:30. He was thoughtful and thorough, giving me a list of places within a few blocks. When he mentioned the restaurant on Market Street that had a full breakfast menu, he showed more enthusiasm then for the others mentioned, so I took my clients there for morning repast. Turned out that Hamilton Restaurant is an old school luncheonette, with long counter with spinners on one side, and tables on the other. Kitchen in back. The offerings were plentiful, with both breakfast and lunch available during open hours. We opted for a couple of omelets (w/ home fries), turkey sage sausage, egg & cheese on Kaiser roll, and a grilled blueberry muffin. Ten minutes later we were served by a very friendly and considerate woman, who seemed to anticipate our needs. That was unexpected and exceptional. Our food was very good. The omelets were stuffed to the gills with the cheesesteak and sausage fillings two of them wanted, while my sandwich was not overly large, but very tasty with the turkey sage sausage a surprise star of the show. Very happy with that recommendation. The muffin had a strong resemblance to Costco muffins, but there were no complaints. Coffee was strong and the request that one be half milk, well received and delivered. This location is beyond the spreading influence of UPenn and Drexel. That means that it is still an original joint that has not been gentrified yet. The cozy neighborhood atmosphere was palpable, and the prices reflective of that. I am a huge morning person. Unfortunately, I don't get to eat breakfast like that. 1) I am working early mornings 2) Nobody wakes up as early as I am and I hate eating alone. This place is my secret, and now I'm sharing this secret with you. I have wandered the streets of Philadelphia in search of true homefries -- homefries meaning potatoes that have been chopped up in some unidentifiable way and cooked on a flat top with onions. Homefries that can be made extra crispy on the outside and then doused in ketchup and consumed at a breakneck pace, fulfilling my deepest needs. Hamilton has those homefries. Every place else has some weird shredded potatoes that they call homefries, but it's a ruse and that is NOT OKAY. They also have lots of other average diner breakfast food, served quick and cheap. I love to come in here late on Saturday mornings and sit at the counter and listen to the people that work there playfully argue with each other. I also ordered a raisin bagel with butter, a corn muffin. I also ordered a large hot coffee with hazelnut creamer and 10 sugar packets. Everything was delivered hot and as requested. My over medium eggs were as ordered, they were not runny or too loose. The grits were hot, semi firm and creamy the way I like them. The provolone cheese on my grits was not skimpy nor was it too cheesy but just right. The corn muffin was also hot and weighty. It was moist and sweet, with a cake like texture. My food was not over seasoned or under seasoned (for my taste buds). It was very good! Especially with my large hot coffee. The creamer was well mixed with the coffee, I did not need any of the sugar packets that I requested. Overall I am very satisfied with my food and I will definitely order from them again! Well. We chose this place from the yelp reviews. The University City area seemed to have only coffee shops and no where to get a real breakfast. We walked 5.5+ city blocks to get breakfast. It is not fancy but has ample counter space and seating. The staff were warm and welcoming, really great. Seemed like a good city breakfast joint. In a little bit shady area on the fringes of University City but seemed clean (in dining area). We ordered regular breakfast foods- coffee fried eggs, hash browns, chipped beef. Coffee was good. The food was nothing to write home about and I have no problem with average breakfast fare. Homefries were bland, mushy and over cooked. Eggs done perfectly. My friend said the chipped beef was just ok but tasted like eggs??? I would have given it an average rating if not for the following: 1) there was a long hair in my hash browns 2) the bathroom was just plain nasty and you have to duck down to go in- like going in a dirty, hidden closet! and 3) they rolled metal drums of trash/grease/oil past all the customers to take out the front door, which caused some to have to cover their nose and mouths due to odor. I can take a lot of things but not hair in my food...gagging sounds and nausea... Ugh ugh ugh. If it wasn't for the staff, they would have gotten one star. read more

This is the best discovery I have made as a student at Penn. There is no where in the University city area to get a real dine breakfast except for this place. The proprietor, Grace, remembers your order after a few times in the restaurant and the service is always prompt and on-time. Beware, it is cash-only but it is even worth the ATM fee if you forget.
