Hammer Auto is great. I am a person of color, just to get that out of the way for people. They are very professional and get the job done, and are not just a fancy website and some twilio or salesforce.com integration with some listless employee who is working because they have to. This is a company that is realistic, sets expectations clearly, and you will get results promptly. I have now purchased multiple vehicles from Hammer Auto even though I have no problem purchasing cars myself from dealers, or "web sales teams" of dealers. I used to think it is important to buy a car from the dealer where you want the after service. It does not matter, unless I guess you buy a ferarri. The sales team of a dealer are fine people but they could care less about the after service and you are still just one ant in a million when you need to get your car fixed. Assuming that, then you want a painless, drama-less service. Paying Hammer Auto a fee is totally worth it. Based on a recommendation from a "tech titan" that I thought was savvy, I tried a service that starts with C*** and means "smart" and then they seemed to offer the same service, similar fees. But it was total bait and switch, just trying to tell you 100000 reasons why it can't happen, which I could pay myself a fee to do that. The point is to reduce the drama and making car buying just a practical endeavor. I feel this way because even though I have purchased multiple vehicles from Hammer Auto, I also have purchased three Teslas in succession and know how "good" it can be from direct car purchases. Who wants to sit in the "credit office" of some dealer with some person who has a wierd dot-matrix printer from the 1980s and wants to sell you a lo-jack or clear coat protection or wheel protectant? I ended up paying his $600 fee out of fear from his threats when I never got the car I was looking for. He had me sign a contract even though I explained (multiple times) I had several weeks before receiving payment from my old car and then he got furious and threatening when I didn't buy a car fast enough! I contacted this dealership about a truck they had listed online. The sales person, Carlos, was communicative and seemed ready to sell until I showed up with my partner. Once he saw we were a gay couple his demeanor completely changed. I took the truck for a test drive and told him I'd like to pay full asking price and had cash in hand. He wavered and told me he'd have to speak with the seller. It was the oddest interaction. I've never been to a place ready to pay with cash in hand and have been refused. I left and Carlos went radio silent. After a few days I managed to get him on the phone. Another awkward conversation in which he stammered and claimed that he couldn't reach the seller. About a week goes by and I get ahold of him via text for a final time in which he tells me they sold the truck to someone else. It's pretty obvious what happened here. Absolutely do not patronize this business. I went with my girlfriend to view a vehicle we found on craigslist--a total dream car for us. We test drove it and were prepared to hand over cash that day for full asking price. Carlos seemed reluctant to answer us directly regarding whether or not we could purchase the vehicle and told us he'd be in touch with 'the seller' ASAP. Four days went by with limited interaction. When we checked in again, eager to finalize the sale, he told us he'd sold the car out from under us. Buying a car from an auto broker can make the process less painful by eliminating all the haggling, which we Americans aren't accustomed to. It's not a part of our culture. You may be able to get a better price on your own, but it'll probably take a lot more time and effort. I bought my last car from Hammer. They quoted me a good price and I accepted. But when I went back to sign the papers and pick up the car, I was told it would cost me several hundred more for the transportation fee, that is, to have it trucked to them from a dealership. That's understandable, but I didn't appreciate their sneaky approach. If they'd told me about that fee up front, I wouldn't have had a problem with it. I walked out. The salesman called me later and told me he'd wave the transportation fee, and my wife had already fallen in love with the car, so I bought it. But that was several years ago and, reading some reviews here, I see that he has some new tricks up his sleeve. I spoke with one of his reps and Mr. Hammer got back to me within minutes and I was sent a plethora of materials on their process along with some education materials. 5. He provided me with some FREE advice concerning the transaction even though I might end up not using their service. It's the latter step that really impressed me the most. He really did look out for my fiscal well-being and was very generous with his time despite the fact I might not need his service after all. The first transaction went well. The second was a disaster; when it was clear the transaction wasn't going to happen, the proprietor blamed me, spewed unsubstantiated and inaccurate accusations, and behaved unprofessionally. I bought my car from Hammer Auto in May of 2011 and am very happy a year and 20k miles later. Here's how it works: You pay Hammer a fee to find the car you specify. They negotiate a price, take care of all the paperwork (including financing, if needed.) You go into the office in Los Altos, look over the car, and sign the paperwork. 5 minutes, no fuss no muss. I was a bit high maintenance as I was torn between two models at the start of the process but they were very patient with me. Compare that to visiting dealerships, getting a hard sell, figuring out the finance options, etc. For me it's no question. My time is worth money, too. If you are good at haggling, enjoy the hunt for a good deal or want to spend as little as possible (as the fee is separate from the cost of the car) this may not be your cup of tea. There is not a better or easier way to buy a car - and Robert Hammer is a super nice guy :) I haven't bought a lot of cars but when I have - this is the way to go. I was recently trying to figure out what car I wanted based on some weird requirements (wanted to be able to fit a certain sized surf board inside the car, stack three boards, still have a decent car, and so on..). This required going around to look at cars, measure stuff, etc. It was the WORST experience having to deal with the car sales guys on the lots and their "process" and stupid sales lines and overall baloney. Okay - there were a couple that were genuinely nice (the only really nice experience was at the Subaru dealership in RWC so I have to mention that - but I still don't think I'd have wanted to do the car negotiation at the end). Other than the folks I met with there, the entire experience just sucked. I was so relieved once I figured out what I wanted. I called Robert and he had the car for me the next day. It was 10% lower than the sticker and I'm fairly certain lower than what I could have negotiated on my own. Robert sat with me in the car at his location in Los Altos and ran through everything I wanted to know about the car. He even set up my bluetooth/iPhone so a) I wouldn't have to do it and b) so I'd see all the capabilities I had (which I'd have never figured out on my own). He even showed me Siri, which I hadn't yet used. I had an opportunity for a fabulous financing deal through the dealership and he connects the dots so that part happens as well. Overall a perfectly wonderful experience. And I just emailed him to ask him another question about the car and he wrote back in less than 5 minutes. We leased the car we wanted on terms that I doubt were available through a Honda dealer, as Hammer accessed a bank that would do 42 months. He also was able to quote different monthly rates and mileage allowances over various lease terms (36, 39, 42 months), which was most valuable. If you are buying for cash, financing through a loan, or have experience leasing, I highly recommend Hammer. If you have not leased before, there are multiple moving parts: months, rates, residual prices, overage charges for excess mileage, initial cash, fees at termination (who knew?) whether you purchase or turn the car back in. Hammer can be brusque, condescending, arrogant, but he's quick and responsive, and he absolutely believes that leasing is a smart strategy.
