This is only the second time I've ever had dosa, but I think I made the mistake of having my first one in Jackson Heights because this just doesn't hit the same in comparison. In terms of both flavors and textures. Feelings wise, I felt like I was eating a salad or whatever "California-style" is considered--just very Americanized. The potato is very flavorful, however and I just wish everything else is just a seasoned. I can see how maybe the target audience in this particular area may not be able to handle and/or prefer stronger flavors though.

Curried chicken, onions and spinach dosas and the spiced Indian potatoes, grilled chicken and spinach dosas.

The spot is clean and the ingredients taste mostly fresh, but the food is so bland and soulless.

As someone natively from South India, I was genuinely thrilled to find a South Indian restaurant on…read morethe west side of Manhattan -- these spots are almost exclusively concentrated around Murray Hill and the east side. So Annapurna Bhavan had my curiosity before I even walked in. The ambience was good. They don't take reservations, but we were seated as soon as we walked in. Sadly, the food didn't quite deliver. THE GOOD The dosas were well-made and honestly the highlight of the meal. Crispy, properly thin, no complaints there. THE NOT-SO-GOOD Ordered a Rose Milk. Got a rose lassi. These are two completely different things -- rose milk is a light, chilled milk drink; lassi is a yogurt-based beverage. Not a small mix-up if you know South Indian cuisine. The dahi vada was a letdown. It hadn't been soaked in yogurt nearly long enough -- the vadas were still firm, which defeats the whole purpose of the dish. Authentic dahi vada should be pillowy soft. A lot of the menu leans heavily Americanized. The oothappam topped with cheese and jalapeño is a prime example -- it's more Tex-Mex than Tamil Nadu. Fusion is fine, but don't call it traditional. BOTTOM LINE If you're in the neighborhood and craving something South Indian-adjacent, it's convenient and the dosas will do the job. But if you're someone who grew up eating this food and wants the real thing -- you'll probably leave a little disappointed. The location is great; the authenticity needs work.

The chicken was tender and so well flavored, the spicy was perfect, everything was fresh and delicious. Don't skip out on the mango lassi. I will be back many many times. Most abysmal service I have experienced in NYC. There's long waits, wrong dishes, or slow service,…read moreand then there's the racist owner who straight up lies to you. After an hour of waiting for our food, the three tables around us who arrived after us already got their food and were nearly done with their meal. We ask about this twice, and each time the owner says all three tables "pre-ordered" their food. I was confused and asked every table if this was true and obviously it was not. Before leaving, we confront the owner about the inconsistencies in his story, but he just double downs on his lie, alleging that we don't understand how a restaurant is run. For some reason, he even started to yell at the busgirl who was trying to get him to apologize? In addition to holding us hostage for an hour and continued lying, he tries to make the racist point that Indian food is more sophisticated and takes longer to prepare than other types of Asian food. I feel there are certain standards in the NYC service industry given the competition, and this was a confusing and unacceptable experience. The food was admittedly good, but not good enough for them to have the attitude they had.
