As someone natively from South India, I was genuinely thrilled to find a South Indian restaurant on the west side of Manhattan -- these spots are almost exclusively concentrated around Murray Hill and the east side. So Annapurna Bhavan had my curiosity before I even walked in. The ambience was good. They don't take reservations, but we were seated as soon as we walked in. Sadly, the food didn't quite deliver. THE GOOD The dosas were well-made and honestly the highlight of the meal. Crispy, properly thin, no complaints there. THE NOT-SO-GOOD Ordered a Rose Milk. Got a rose lassi. These are two completely different things -- rose milk is a light, chilled milk drink; lassi is a yogurt-based beverage. Not a small mix-up if you know South Indian cuisine. The dahi vada was a letdown. It hadn't been soaked in yogurt nearly long enough -- the vadas were still firm, which defeats the whole purpose of the dish. Authentic dahi vada should be pillowy soft. A lot of the menu leans heavily Americanized. The oothappam topped with cheese and jalapeño is a prime example -- it's more Tex-Mex than Tamil Nadu. Fusion is fine, but don't call it traditional. BOTTOM LINE If you're in the neighborhood and craving something South Indian-adjacent, it's convenient and the dosas will do the job. But if you're someone who grew up eating this food and wants the real thing -- you'll probably leave a little disappointed. The location is great; the authenticity needs work. read more

Fantastic ! I had walked past Annapurna Bhavan so many times and always noticed the crowd waiting outside, so I finally decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! After about a 10-minute wait, the server was able to sit us at the bar. Since it was our first visit, we asked our server for his recommendations, and every suggestion was spot on. The dosas were some of the best I've ever had. So crispy, flavorful, and served with several delicious dipping sauces. Even though it's a vegetarian restaurant, every dish was packed with incredible flavor. The server also recommended a sweet dessert that was the perfect way to end the meal, and the yogurt-based drinks were refreshing and delicious. Most of the exciting new dosa places around the NY/NJ area lately have been Andhra or Karnataka style places, with delicacies like thatte idli or gongura dosas increasingly available. But this new establishment is a Chennai-style eatery, similar to some of the older generation of South Indian spots in NYC like Saravanaa Bhavan. They are definitely still working out some kinks with the service. Most of the tables seemed to be growing a bit impatient for their dosai. We tried the paneer-masala variety and enjoyed the filling, although the dosai itself seemed like it had been rushed off the grill with a pretty pale color. We also tried the South India thali. I quite liked the kuzhumbu which had a lovely imli flavor. The poriyal was rather dry, and the kesari/sheera could have used more ghee. Not a bad option in west Midtown, but I would not necessarily go out of your way to visit. read more

Came here twice and the experiences were so different. The first time it was amazing - 5 stars. Great food and totally packed (we had to wait 10-15 min or so for a table). The second time it was mostly empty, no wait, and I didn't enjoy the food though my husband thought it was ok - 3 stars (though admittedly spice was one of the main problems for me the second visit). Overall, I would say go for the dosas, which are pretty good here, and the paneer curry entrees (though wasn't a huge fan of the paneer dosa which kind of fell apart). Really delicious South Indian food. We tried sambar vada, Mysore masala dosa, soya malai tikka, masala chai, and buttermilk. My favorite was the soya malai tikka - great texture with a creamy and spicy sauce full of fragrance from biryani masala. The Mysore masala dosa was a good balance of soft and crunchy. And the vada was fluffy and flavorful. The three chutneys - tomato, coconut, and cilantro - were fresh and tasty. The sambar was savory and comforting. I also enjoyed the drinks. The buttermilk (chaas) was really tasty in particular, with plenty of flavor from roasted spices. Prices were average at about $70 with tax and tip, with a good amount of food for two people. The food here is exceptional especially the dosas! I had a delivery order of Potato Bonda, Soya Malal Tikka, Masala Dosa, South Indian Thali, Vegetable Jalfrezi, Okra Masala and Rajma. The standout was the Masala Dosa, a thin crispy crepe made of rice and lentils stuffed with spiced potatoes and onions...perfect! All other dishes were outstanding, too...flavorful with different carefully prepared dipping sauces. The Potato Bonda was a perfectly fried ball of spiced potatoes with a crunchy outside and creamy delicious spiced potato mixture inside and various dipping sauces which I poured over the luscious interior. The Vegetable Jalfrezi was a tasty mixture of vegetables with mildly spiced fluffy rice on the side. The Soya Malal Tikka was a tasty, creamy meat substitute. The Okra Masala was spicy and excellent. Packing was well done. The staff are nice to deal with. I have an almond allergy, and they were very accommodating. My advice is to go before the word gets out! Certainly, it is nice to have such a fine Indian restaurant in the neighborhood. This is a vegetarian restaurant where the meat is not missed. My highest recommendation. read more

The best South Indian restaurant I have eaten at in NYC hands down! It is entirely vegetarian so my praise should mean even more as a carnivore. Came for dinner based on a friend's recommendation and it did not disappoint. The restaurant itself is not that big (maybe a dozen or so tables) and it can get busy. The tables are close together, but not so close you can't get in or out comfortably. My only complaint is their reservation system. You can only make reservation requests through their website and they never got back to me to confirm or not. When I called they explained reservations must be done online. However, I can look past this because the food is SO RIDICULOUSLY GOOD. As a group of three we ordered the potato bonda, sambhar vada and paneer tikka as appetizers. The potato bonda was cooked perfectly, crispy outside and not oily at all. The sambhar vada was tasty and the sambar was perfectly seasoned and spiced. The paneer was the star though, honestly tied for the best paneer tikka I have ever tried. It comes out sizzling and steaming, served on top of peppers and onions and just has wonderful flavor and texture. For entrees we ordered the masala dosa, mixed veg uttapam, vegetable jalfrezi and kashmiri naan. The dosa was crispy and tasty, though it could have used a bit more filling. The uttapam had a nice soft fluffy texture, but was falling apart from the weight of the peas and carrots in the dough. The vegetable jalfrezi knocked my socks off. It was so good and different from other jalfrezi dishes I have tried, less tomato forward, not oily and bursting with flavor. I would go back just for the vegetable jalfrezi alone. Lastly the kashmiri naan was incredible, the inside has crushed cashews, almonds and pistachios and is lightly sweet, it was so good you can eat it on its own, it would almost be a shame to dip it in anything. We were quite full by the end of the meal and the bill was extremely reasonable (about $40 a person). I will definitely be going back and while we enjoyed everything we ate I highly highly recommend the paneer tikka, vegetable jalfrezi and kashmiri naan. read more

came on a tuesday evening after work and man was this place busy- people were waiting for a while to snag a table my friend and i were initially quoted a 15 min wait but thankfully a table at the entrance was available we took it - probably only waited 5 minutes if that the table we sat at was right by the door which was fine besides the fact that it was a cold day so i was catching the outside breeze which wasnt ideal. because my back faced the restaurant i didnt really even catch the vibe of the inside service was quick we ordered and got food fast. i got the masala dosa and it came with 3 chutneys and a generous serving of sambar. really good dosa and super filling!!! sambar was good consistency but i wish it had more veggies in it. the chutneys were really good. def recommend and would return. read more

A new dosa spot has opened in Hell's Kitchen, and we are thrilled! We used to have to go all the way to the Upper West Side just for dosa, so it's amazing to have this gem so close by. The location is new, clean, and well-run, and the food is absolutely outstanding. We mostly come for the dosa, which is always delicious, and the kids can't get enough of the mango lassi. The manager even remembers us from the old location and is always kind and attentive, which makes every visit feel special. I was visiting NYC and craving authentic Indian food, so I decided to try Annapurna Bhavan and it was a great experience. I ordered the paneer tikka masala which was pretty good, along with a mango lassi and salted lassi that were both really yummy and tasted authentic. The kids cheese dosa was a hit with my cousin, and the coconut chutney was spicy but super yummy. The highlight of the meal was definitely the podi idly--it was AMAZING and the absolute star of the show. I highly recommend trying the podi idly. I was so happy to see a vegetarian Indian food place pop up in Hell's Kitchen. I've already been here 4 times, and I'm smitten. The food is delicious. All of the bold flavors and spice one would expect from Indian cuisine. You can always ask for things less spicy is that is your thing. The staff is attentive and the restaurant is quaint and clean. The prices are a little high, but it's a restaurant in Hell's Kitchen, so that is to be expected. I live in Jackson Heights where I can get Indian food at quite reasonable prices, but when I'm in Manhattan...this is a fantastic option. It's best if you are coming with a few people and can eat family style. As a single diner it is a little tricky because I want to taste it all. They do have Thalis (platter) that are reasonable especially for dinner. The menu is 10 pages, so there are so many items to explore. This restaurant is amazing! We went for Diwali (Nov '25) which was very soon after they opened. Service was less than stellar, & after we were about to give up & walk out, the owner/manager noticed & apologized said our food was on its way. We waited about 15 minutes for a table, & then it took a while to place our order, and 45 minutes later our food arrived. The food was really good, but we were tired and ready to go. We asked for our check & the owner came back over to give us a complimentary dessert. We thanked him and then asked for our check again, but then he leaned in & thanked us for staying to try the food, then told us he comp'd our meal & wouldn't accept any tip. We told him we would be back, & we understood it was opening week and Diwali so lots of large tables with all in a celebratory mood. We went back again for lunch New Year's Day with friends, and it was so delicious, and we had great service! The flavors were calling us back so we had our leftovers for dinner that night, and then 2 days later we had take out delivered, and everything was still so wonderful, flavorful, & high on the list of "the best" by my husband who is from Pune. They have such an expansive menu, and the quality of everything we have ordered has been even better than another favorite Indian restaurant. This restaurant serves only vegetarian dishes, & although I am an omnivore, and usually choose meat dishes, this place has won me over. They go for excellent dosa (lentil and potato crepe,) but I had the channa bharavan from the house specialties section. Bharavan is a puffed bread fried lightly in oil and like poorI. It was actually filling. The channa chickpeas in spiced tomato sauce was tasty, especially when dunking bits of bread into the pot and letting it absorb the sauce. The service is very friendly. We loved the Southern Thali and Business Thali along with Gobi 65 appetizer. Each dish on the thali was distinct, flavorful and complementary all together, from cardamom and tamarind flavors to salty and sweet. Loved the payasam for dessert. Clearly the best thali we've had outside of India. The Gobi 65 was wonderfully crispy, spicy, rich with the perfect amount of sauce. Service was good and attentive. Nice room.
