Our friend invited the three of us to Han 202 as it is one of her regular spots, and I can see why. The food was incredibly delicious, presentation impeccable, and service was wonderful. Everything we ordered was amazing -- amongst us we had applewood bacon salad, arugula with truffle and goat cheese, pork dumplings, monoglian beef, black pepper pork tenderloin... standouts were the calamari (honestly, the best I have had) and the salmon with Malaysian chili sauce. Everything was so, so fresh and tasty. All desserts were the perfect end to a beautiful meal. Who's scruffy lookin? Certainly not Han, this is a gem. 5 course prix fixe that's quite the deal at $25. Recently met a few friends here for dinner and had a blast. The food was great, though I'm struggling to remember what we had. They comped our table a serving of truffle fries to snack on while we waited for our food. It seemed a bit of an odd dish at a Chinese restaurant. But, that mattered little as we devoured the plate in no time. I had the arugula and parmesan salad to start, my wife had the dumplings. These were both solid. For our mains, Kris had the Red Snapper (Curb, anyone?) with the brown jalapeño sauce. I had the duck breast with the spicy sichuan hot bean sauce. It was a huge duck breast, but lacked a bit of the kick I was expecting. My wife also expected her dish to bring the noise and it too lacked the punch we wanted. Still, they were both very good. The wine flowed and we enjoyed the company. Before we knew it, three hours had passed. BYOB certainly helps to keep the tab low. All said, we were very pleased with our night here. We're fine. Our night at Han 202 featured: Quiet elegance Exquisite prix fixe 25.00 meal Plus time spent with fabulous Yelpers! What a magnificent time, I can't wait to come back. My hubby and I sank into the comfy seats rather than the bench seating and were immediately comfortable. The room was small and understated with an easy noise level so we were able to converse freely. The service was divine, they even immediately fixed the soap dispenser when I mentioned the pump wasn't working. And the food, glorious food! They gave us a complimentary plate of french fries with truffle oil and chopped onions. They also provided wine glasses, a bottle opener and a bucket of ice for our champagne plus fresh glasses when we switched from wine to champagne. (Cheers!) I chose the salmon for my appetizer which was pleasant but I didn't finish. I followed that with the Shanghai steamed dumplings with a delicious plum sauce. I ate all three! With glee! My main course was the General Tao which was thisclose to the outermost range of my spiciness range. I really enjoyed it and ordered the not included brown rice to accompany it. For dessert I had a cunning little mini cupcake which was just perfect. I added their full bodied French press coffee and walked out of there satiated in a most content way! Thank you so much Yvonne B and M who introduced us to the divine eatery. They are delightful dinner companions and really know their restaurants! Yes, I'm hesitant on creatures from Under the Sea who wear a shell, but with some playful ribbing and understanding from my dinner partner, Han 202 and I got along just fine! The place is sleek and sexy, slightly modern with warm touches like colorful pillows and muted lighting and paintings. Perfect for a date with your Current Crush, or catching up with a small group. It's BYOB, and the waitstaff will kindly chill your bottles if needed, while you eat. You know the drill by now: Five courses, $20. Soup- Fresh Vegetables- veggie stock base with sliced zucchini, tomato, carrot, tofu was satisfying Salad- My Beef with Lemongrass and Green Apple salad was excellent. The beef was so tender and I loved the marinade. My partner's Cucumber Crab Meat Salad was cool and refreshing! See, I'm coming around to shellfish! Appetizer- Uh oh...Shrimp all over the place! For the shrimp lover, there's 5-6 shrimp options. I chose King Crab Rangoon, which could have been served on the dessert course! Two big triangles of deep fried, creamy crab rangoon, with a sweet drizzle, dare I say slightly chocolaty? Yum, incredible! The Seared Scallop was like eating a steak for seafood lovers. Served with a pat of sprouts, with a plum reduction sauce, it was also excellent. Entree- I got the Monk Fish with Black Bean Sauce, while very good, was the dish most like something experienced at lesser Chinese restaurants. My dining partner's Spicy Red Snapper served on the bone, was surprisingly good and had just the perfect amount of jalapeno spice to it. The current dessert was vanilla ice cream with lychee fruit and did not disappoint. Service was top notch all night. You have to love these little hidden places in neighborhoods where you would least expect them. In Han 202's case- it's Bridgeport. Known for its stability- people who have lived there all their lives, small family owned businesses and bars and where most things have remained unchanged for years. But that is changing with the addition of innovative spots like Han 202. What a breath of fresh air Han 202 turned out to be. A $20 prix fixe five course dinner and BYOB? How do they do it? It must be on volume, for on the Sunday night that we were there- the place was comfortably busy from the time we got there to the time we left. Reservations can be made on line through their website- You will be called back to confirm that you are still coming the day before. We were seated in the front window (my fav) opened our wine and with in moments had made our decisions on what we were going to have. We were together on some of our picks but since we wanted to taste some more of the menu- we did purposefully go in different directions on others. Soup: Spicy Crab Miso soup Salad: Beef and Lemongrass salad, Crabmeat and cucumber salad Appetizer:: Shrimp/Vegetable Tempura, Spring roll Entree:: Rack of Lamb, Chilean Sea Bass Dessert:: Vanilla ice cream with lychee and mango sorbet Everything was delicious, beautifully presented (loved the white dinner ware) and a pleasure to eat. The service was spot on- friendly, quick to notice what was needed, and perfect with their suggestions on what to have on the menu. The decor is modern and contemporary with plush chairs, a small modern bar (to enjoy a soda at?) with a contemporary metal faced front and cool bar stools. The only thing that seemed out of place was the Pepsi beverage case behind the bar. Even the restrooms were delightful- clean, smelling like the "room fragrance" that they had chosen with plenty of towels, etc. Street Parking is easy (bring quarters as they are still on the meter system) and know as you face the building that it's the door on the left with 605 above it where you enter (watched countless people try to enter through the door on the right). Bridgeport continues to surprise me with great things around every corner. The locals have always known it. Guys. This is the best Chinese food I've had in Chicago and it's not even close. The $35 prix fixe menu was phenomenal. Each course had at least 4 options that sounded amazing (even for a gluten-free bb like me). The calamari was breaded with cornstarch and you have to get it. Light and crispy with the best salt and pepper seasoning. For entree I had the monkfish and they were able to make the sauce a little spicy for me. Mind. Blown. Perfectly savory with a hint of sweet, perfect amount of heat, and not at all greasy. I will be craving this all the time from now on. Lemon cheesecake for dessert was great (skipped the crust and it was still good). The one and only bummer about this place is that it was empty on a Friday night. My god, people. GO HERE! Well, where do I start with this review? First I guess I would have to say this place is AMAZING! I know that when I read reviews, I like to know details about what people ate there, how it tasted, the cost and etc. So that will be how I draft my review. I went to Han 202 with 2 friends and decided to get different things to be able to thoroughly know how to rate this place. As we walked in, we were welcomed very kindly by the two servers and seated right away. The ambiance of the restaurant was very warm and inviting, even the bathroom was very nicely decorated. We ordered from the fixed menu, which is five courses and $20 per person, this should be the way to go because if you only got a meal it would probably cost between $15-18. What we ordered: Soup: Spicy king crab miso soup (all 3 of us got this). I hate tofu, just hate it - but if all tofu taste like this I would eat tofu all the time. It was great! It's spicy but not SPICY, just perfect. Salad: Friend #1: Lettuce seaweed salad. It was alright for me - for someone who enjoys the taste and texture of seaweed it would be great. The lettuce and seaweed was very fresh. Friend #2: Cucumber crab meat salad. This was very good. You could tell that the cucumber was very fresh. The taste of the crab and cucumber was different but very enjoyable. Me: Beef with lemongrass salad. This was the best of all three salads, we all agreed! Just amazing! I think the "lemongrass" was shredded green apples, which was surprisingly good with the tender and perfectly spiced beef. Appetizer: Friend #1: Crab rangoon. This was I want to say some of the best crab rangoon I have ever had. Fried, seasoned and filled perfectly. Friend #2: Seared scallop. My friend loves scallop and this was no exception, however we thought that 1 scallop was not sufficient, given that the other two appetizers were much larger. Nonetheless, there were no complaints about the taste. Me: Salt and pepper calamari. And again, my selection was one of the best (well it's a tossup between this and the crab Rangoon). I have never had calamari without any breading or sauce to dip it in and this did NOT need anything. It was lightly fried with salt, pepper and garnished with jalapeno... a party in my mouth. Entrée: Friend #1: Salmon with mango coconut sauce. Okay, so I think I will order this the next time I go to Han 202. It was so refreshing and light. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the sauce was very well made. Friend #2: Chilean seabass with Malaysia chili sauce. I have never tasted Chilean seabass, but if this is the way it tastes, I believe it just might be my new favorite fish. The sauce that came with it was very hearty and had different types of veggies that were cooked perfectly. Me: Rack of lamb with bonito plum sauce. I wish I had more adjectives to stress to you how good this tasted. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. I usually hate my veggies left firm, however with this meal it was flawlessly matched. Dessert: Vanilla ice cream with mango tomato sorbet (all three of us got this). At first, I was very disappointed that there was only one choice for dessert, especially since everything else had an abundance of choices. On the other hand, when I got it I was very glad that I had no other choices, because I might have just chosen something else and would not have known how to live with myself after that! You think... Mango and Tomato Sorbet?! But this combination was such a harmonious flow of taste. Loved it and I was impressed with the leachy fruit they put on the side. Very unexpected. The bill came out to $66 for all three of us! The serving sizes were PERFECT (except for the scallops I mentioned earlier) and the service was extraordinary! The one thing I want to mention just in case someone from Han 202 reads this... the music selection was not very enjoyable. If I were to choose a type of music, I would go with something worldly... something like the Cirque du Soleil soundtracks. I am grateful for the astonishing dining experience! read more

I saw your table Candice. :) I sat by the window up front with a friend as your table was wrapping up. Soon after we were seated the place filled up (20 tables in there?). I was afraid that the crush would be a disaster in terms of service. While it took a little longer between the 3rd course and entree, I explained to my friend that the time was wonderful for those enjoying a nice bottle of wine and convo. The worst thing is to be rushed through your meal. While I won't echo the reviews below, I will say that I'm happy that Han 202 is down the street from me and appreciate what they're trying to do. The 5 course for $20, coupled with a nice atmosphere, byo/no cork gets a thumbs up for sure. The only thing i wish they'd do is cut the salt level down substantially and it's on. Han 202 has been on my "to do" list since I first saw it reviewed on "Check Please". That was at least over a year ago. I'm angry at myself for not trying it sooner. Everything about Han 202 was fantastic. The food. The service. The ambiance. The fact it was BYOB. ((How can you NOT love that?!)) The ambiance was sexy and romantic. Dim lighting, plush chairs, candles, delicate prints, and warm colors. Han 202 is the perfect place for a date. It also sets the scene for a fantastic girls night out as well. The service was mostly great. Our water glasses were always filled, the servers were knowledgeable about the menu and extremely friendly, and the courses were spaced out perfectly......Well...with the exception of the dessert. Here's my one issue. We special ordered the blueberry tart, and we're told it took 40 minutes to prepare since it was made fresh - fair enough, since they asked us for our complete order when we sat down. However, we waited 45 minutes after our entree plates were cleared to get our dessert, with nothing more than an apology. That kind of sucked. Given you can't sit there and order a drink ((well, a boozey one)), it would have been nice to have a coffee or an extra scoop of ice cream on the house - just for the inconvenience. Either way, it didn't put a drastic damper on the evening or taint my thoughts on Han 202. Moving on... The food was incredible. I'm inclined to say it is definitely the best Chinese food I've had. Each dish was delicious. My favorites were the Shanghai Dumplings and Red Beet Salad. The General Tao's Chicken was unlike any General Tao's I've had before. It was lightly breaded and the chicken was moist and very fresh. The bf made the claim that the short ribs were the best he's ever eaten - period. That's saying a lot coming from someone who's fairly hard to impress when it comes to food. The prices were more than fair. $25 for a 4 course prix fixe meal. ((Yes, it's four courses now, not five. They eliminated the soup.)) And don't worry, you won't leave hungry. The portions were generous, which I was shocked about after reading other reviews. I expected to leave starving. I was fairly bummed to see the upcharge on some of the entrees and many of the desserts. Was it worth it? Eh - maybe for the desserts. The Blueberry Tart and Blueberry Ice Cream were delish - but I would have been fine with the smidge of sorbet you can choose. They are also flexible with vegetarian options ((I asked since it's a preference of mine)). The options are limited and are taken by removing portions of other dishes ((i.e., veggie tempura instead of shrimp tempura)). I figured if I was here, I was going all out - poultry and all. Here were our selections... Salads: :: Red Beet, Mirin Soy Vinagrette, Ricotta Cheese :: Tea Smoked Scottish Salmon, Sorrel, Frisee Lettuce Appetizers: :: Shanghai Dumplings with Ginger Soy :: Beef Short Rib with Mustard Sauce Entrees: :: General Tao's Chicken with Sweet/Tangy/Spicy Sauce :: Shrimp & Diver Scallops in Spicy Garlic Sauce Dessert: :: Blueberry Ice Cream :: Blueberry Walnut Tart With that being said, I leave you with this... I've got a confession. My last review was true, and my complaints were real enough to knock of some significant Yelp stars, but despite all that, I STILL recommended Han 202 to friends and family. In fact, when the momentous occasion of parents meeting loomed before us, together we thought that Han 202 would be the best spot. You see, Han 202 is fancy without being stuffy. Also, let's face it, there's no getting over the set price of $25/person and BYOB. The food is good: creative and yummy. Sometimes satisfying and sometimes impressive. Street parking is easy. The service is okay. I mean, I get the impression that employees earnestly try to please guests; however, some very real language barriers have kept that from coming to fruition 100% of the time. Both times I've gone to Han 202, I've had servers who did not speak English very well. Sometimes that has resulted in getting incorrect dishes. Other times food that we ordered was placed before us without any description of what was on the plate. Regardless of my complaints about Han 202, I still recommend it as a good place to go. I mean, my favorite part is that I know the bill ahead of time and still get good food in a nice setting! read more

Is it possible for a place that is listed in Michelin's Bib Gourmand to be under-rated and a bit under the radar? When it comes to Han 202, I think the answer is yes. I am absolutely shocked that this placed isn't packed night in, night out. A friend had been here for a wine dinner a few months ago, and from that visit several of us have been chomping at the bit to come here. So, knowing that they are BYO, a bunch of friends and I came down here for a wine dinner. We all started off with a piece of Tuna sushi. This was cut beautifully and was a great little amuse bouche starter. After the starter, we got into the real fun. I chose the lobster tail with red beet and star anise mayo. This was an excellent starting dish with a lot of subtle complexity to it. My next two courses were the shrimp toast and duck breast with sichuan hot bean sauce. The shrimp toast was one of those dishes that has left me thinking about it days later. It sounds weird as shrimp toast is normally just an appetizer that is deeply fried at a lot of Chinese restaurants. Instead, this was turned into a real delight and stand alone dish. The duck breast was just as innovative and wonderful. The heat from the sauce was just right and the duck breast was beautifully done. I ended things with the walnut tart and ice cream. This had just the right amount of sweetness to it and was a great way to end things. I can't speak highly enough of Han 202. The experience was a home run at every point. Add in that it's BYO, and you have a real winner. I can't wait for my next trip here. read more

This place u might miss and pass thousand times but never get in. But yea, give them a try u will surprise yourself. How come this place not get any Michelin star yet? I'm asking myself. The scollop with white chocolate sauce is amazing. The best I have ever had in my life. Scollop is very juicy and tender, can't feel too strong about the white chocolate taste, but it gave this item very nice balance of favor. The shrimp toast? So dame good!!!!!! Crispy out with sesame seeds and soft bread for the bite with tiger shrimp. Everything are good here, I don't usually say that besides I did once by the hotel restaurant by Las Vegas. I tips $131.00 for me and my wife, that show my respect to the food and the chef who made the food. And the great service as well. I will go back for sure! read more

We were so happy to see that Han 202 is still alive and kicking! We took some Bridgeport friends who had never been. They were pleasantly surprised. As others have no doubt noted it's Chinese but with French flourishes. Because the prix fixe meal price is so reasonable I usually order some of the add-ons. Since last time we were there two things have changed: 1) the portion size has increased; and 2) they added a bar service! Had a couple of great Manhattans. What a gem. Went on a Friday night and they had a fixed price $35 dinner that included 2 appetizers an entree and desert. All of it was great. Service is spartan but efficient. Who knew that this place even existed? Michelin does, because they made the recommended list for 2012 - hopefully stars are not far behind! We came in at about 6:30 on a Tuesday night for dinner. The place, if you didn't already know, does a prix fixe, five course chinese meal for $25 - with upgrades on several of the courses available for $3-$5 each. They are BYOB so bring something or you will have to have water or tea (which was fine with us on a weeknight!) The soup was just one selection - crab meat and pork wonton in a miso broth - delicious! I then got the beet and ricotta salad and the husband went for the popular beef and green apple salad. He found the sauce too oniony, but I thought it was tasty from the bite he let me have. Mine was pretty boring, but still tasty. The appetizer list is incredible and hard to choose from. A table nearby ordered an extra one, which I should have thought to do!! I took the walnut shrimp and husband had the quail. He thought the quail was a little rare for his taste but it was really well-seasoned and I LOVED the shrimp. I wish there was an entree of this because it was that good. For entrees I went with the monkfish in black bean sauce with mixed vegetables and he had the NY strip selection. Perfectly cooked, sauces were spot-on. Both come with a small (1/2 cup) portion of white rice) Dessert was a basil ice cream for me (housemade) and a chocolate truffle for him. All this, with two bottles of San Pelligrino for the table was only $65. Amazing value for this kind of quality and really attentive service. Parking on 31st was very easy and we were in and out in just about an hour - so if you really time it, that is only $1.50 on the meters - far less than you would pay in Chinatown and there you will have hit or miss success. Sorry, but this place wasn't that good. Don't get me wrong -- five courses for $20 is an awesome deal, BYOB makes things even better, and there's nothing wrong with the service or decor. But the food itself was not that special. The king crab miso soup was decent, tasted kind of like the end of a bowl of instant ramen with a piece of crab. I liked the beef lemongrass salad cause it was heavy on the meat and light on the salad. The scallops were tiny, but I also tried the calamari and that was better. The duck didn't do it for me -- the meat itself was on the fatty and chewy side and the sauce it was paired with would have tasted better with beef. My girlfriend ordered the sea bass, which she says was "alright." Same goes for the dessert. In the end, I was glad I checked it out but I probably won't go back. They're trying interesting things with traditional Chinese flavors, but some of them just don't work that well. Maybe I'm biased cause I'm Chinese and I've been eating Chinese food my whole life. Chinese French Fusion - A Beautiful Pairing Han 202 is one of the best representations of Asian - Western Fusion I've ever seen. While Han occasionally strayed two far in one direction, the fruit tart that I had was decidedly not Asian, they made up for it with their elegant executions of traditional Asian dishes. This menu is a pre-fixie option with various choices. Several choices if selected come at an additional cost to their $35 traditional menu. However, be wary if an item looks like it is comprised of several expensive ingredients your dish will most likely be substantially smaller than its cheaper alternative. I went with a friend, so I had the opportunity to experience two different options on their menu. The first salad I tried was a simple, yet lovely arugula salad with white truffle oil and Parmesan cheese. The salad was delicious, the arugula was clearly fresh and the Parmesan high quality. Afterwards, I tried their Red Lobster tail accompanied with beet. While the lobster tail itself was quite small, it had an absolutely fantastic flavor. It was tender, delicious, and a surprisingly good combination with the beet. This was a lovely surprise and a reflection of the creativity of the chef, lobster and beet is not a traditional combination. The entrees were similarly fantastic, with my rack of lamb being tender, succulent, and delicious. Here is where Han202's creativity begins to shine, they paired my lamb with a delicious plumb and bonito sauce, with the umami flavors underlying the lamb delightfully. I also was fortunate enough to try their szechuan duck breat, which is a classic but paired with American vegetables. Our dinner ended on a splendid note with a lovely fruit tart and lemon cheesecake. If you want to experience Chinese food, French food, and a fusion of the both please come to Han202. The restaurant provides each cuisine the respect they deserve, but combines them in unique and innovative ways that are definitely worth trying. read more

So saw this on Check Please, as did all of other "table neighbors"..... they were raving about it all. (We were just ordering as they were getting desserts) Here's the short but sweet low down.... The service was good, nice water service, love the fact that it's byob, and the food was very tasty... But, you can tell why it's only $25 per person without upgrades.... Let's just say the apps were rather "skimpy".... If Han 202 were to add an extra $10 and make it $35 for a FIVE course dinner instead of $25 I could be just as happy Aka make the courses slightly bigger..... if you know what I mean?! Han 202 is a great bang for your buck! The price point is excellent and BYOB makes the night out that much more affordable. Although I'd have to disagree with many of the reviewers saying this is the best Chinese food in the city I will definitely say that they serve very good, very affordable and often high quality Chinese food. I went to Han 202 for the first time during the first month they were open and had a very hit or miss experience. The soup was good, the appetizer was bad (fish cake), the entree was good, the dessert was bad (fruit flavored tootsie rolls made up most of it). I've recently gone back a few times and there has been quite an improvement as everything I've tasted has been good. My last trip was with a group of 4 and I made sure to taste everything that was ordered (in the name of science of course). Both of the soups were good although everyone at the table agreed that the spicy miso was the best. We had the calamari, shanghai dumplings and egg roll for appetizers. Appetizers were our favorite course as all 3 of them were VERY good. I love Shanghai style dumplings (with soup inside!) and Han 202 definitely does them right! For our entrees I had the shrimp and scallops while my companions had the duck breast and general tao's chicken. All of the entrees were good but the duck breast was the winner of that round. The only issue anyone had with entrees was that you got to choose your level of spiciness (mild, medium or hot) and the hot dishes had barely any spice to them. The service is nice and laid back and the timing between courses was spot on. Han 202 is a great Bridgeport restaurant with good food and even better prices. read more

My brother and I traipsed in to Han 202 this week thinking we were going to check out a new place for takeout but ended up dining in instead after taking a look at their dinner menu. A prix fixe dinner? For $20? What a bargain?!! The 5-course tasting menu included a selection of each: soup, salad, appetizer, entree and dessert. Noteworthy items to try include the beef with lemongrass salad (it's actually a julienne green apple salad), and the rack of lamb with a bonito miso demi-glace. The sweet bulgogi-inspired marinade from the lemongrass beef worked very well with the delicate julienne apples so no additional dressing was needed. The food presentation was elegant though a little awkward at times, but I'm a clumsy eater ... what can I say? For example, the seared scallop appetizer was served in a bowl and we only had a fork, no knife -- this made it difficult to cut into the food without sloshing the soy-based dressing everywhere. I gave up, stabbed it with my fork and ate it, not so elegantly. Steamed rice came in a bowl, separate from the entree, and still, I had my fork. I guess I'm used to my chopsticks, but it felt like the rice should have been plated with everything else. The vanilla bean ice cream cup dessert came with a scoop of mango/tomato sorbet on a plate and a spoon, which would normally be fine if in a bowl, but it wasn't so it for a while we were pushing pieces of sorbet around on the plate. Green tea is additional though ($2 per person). Service was good, but will need some work. It's expected in any new place that they need to work out kinks, but our servers were friendly and attentive. Overall, Han 202 is very well worth the trip to Bridgeport. It'll give Sushi Para II, in Lincoln Park, a run for my money when I next have my hunger pangs ... read more

What a fantastic find in Bridgeport neighborhood. Calming, clean, and group friendly ambiance. The menu provides a varied and delicious selection that changes each time with some reliable, never-disappointing standards such as the pepper calamari appetizer, the Arugula and cheese salad, the entree of Mongolian Beef, Shrimp and Scallops in Spicy Garlic, or a perfectly cooked medium rare Rack of Lamb. Honest reviews: this is still my favorite chinese restaurant. its really affordable only 35 dollars a person n they give coupons to. Then they always give a free course. The service is good really attentive and they tell u every ingredient in the dish which i love. The decor is fancy perfect for a date night or if u jus want to hangout with friends. ways to improve the restaurant: first lower the amount of many items on the menu there is literly like 30 items n with a big menu this leads to sometimes forgetting to season dishes or just having some dishes not as good as others if u limit then u could focus on making really good dishes. 2 stop taking out really good dishes the foie gras with fries n the salmon macroon were my favorite plz bring these back!! I have been visiting this restaurant for about nine years and was so impressed for most of that time. It's dropped to three and a half stars from four and a half. I'll get in to that later. First however let's discuss the positive. Because it's got great food and excellent presentation. Don't let the neighborhood fool you. The food is always tasty and prepared great. Many of the items on the menu have Chinese cuisine influence but not all. I've noticed a lot more standards you'll find elsewhere nowadays and unique offerings (yeah, now I'm getting into the less than positive; it was inevitable). The ambiance is great too... interesting furnishings and decor. Bieber it's a small place so it can get noisy if there are large groups. My last two visits had a couple parties of six or eight, and they were boisterous, when combined it spoiled the tone. The fixed price and multiple courses is not very common but it used to be one of the positive aspects of the restaurant. You would pay $35 and get a top notch and interesting meal. However in an effort to keep prices more attractive, the fixed price hasn't gone up to adjust for costs or inflation (which seems nice), but the menu now has a tremendous amount of add-on options to accommodate for the fact many dishes are boring or typical of anywhere (not special or unique like almost everything on the menu used to be). Which means that for just the base fixed price, you get common good food, beautifully presented, but ultimately nothing special. Maybe this is a plus for some....for me it's a disappointment from how amazing the place used to be. But it's a business so they must think they need more customers, and playing to the lowest common denominator is this format I suppose to get more people in the door. If you want more premium ingredients then the fixed price turns into the base model and you end up paying more for each adjustment. At the end of the night you've spent a lot more. Our check wasn't ridiculous but it wasn't reasonable for the experience especially compared with what it used to be like. I used to promote this place to my friends and family whom I would bring our recommend here because you could get a fine dining meal but without the pretentious attitude (the staff is friendly) and for half the price of closer to downtown prices. Now it seems I'm getting similar regular good food for more than I could get at my usual choices. It still is worth a visit. It's still got most of the charm it started with. This spot was an amazing find. It's BYOB but they also offer a strongly curated wine list and surprisingly good cocktails. The inside is a clean and comfortable ambiance. The service is nice. If you are a fan of the typical Chinese restaurants in America, DO NOT go to Han 202! It will surely disappoint. 1. It doesn't look anything like a Chinese restaurant: no golden dragons, no hand fans, no paper lanterns, not even a Zodiac place mat. 2. They don't offer disposable chopsticks. Seriously! We had to eat our entire meal with forks and knives. 3. No cheap Chinese beer! We were actually expected to bring our own booze. 4. No fortune cookies with the check. NO FORTUNE COOKIES!!! How are we supposed to know what lotto numbers to play tomorrow? 5. A meal costs, at minimum, $25. You can get all you can eat at China Buffet for only $6.35! If you are a fan of the typical Chinese restaurants, don't bother going to Han 202. And please stop reading now. The rest of this review is not for you. So, here's the real scoop. Han 202 is amazing! The food was exceptional: red snapper in basil jalapeno sauce, beef short rib in mustard sauce, shrimp and scallop in a spicy garlic sauce. I could rave about each course in detail but I hear the menu changes frequently so I'll just say I enjoyed everything I ate. The presentation is noteworthy. I was seated facing the prep area and got to observe all the delicate touches the ladies in the kitchen were putting to the plates. The restaurant is classy: well decorated, soft lighting, comfortable seats; ideal for a date. At $25 for a 4 course meal, it's a great value. I paid a $6 surcharge for the chocolate mousse but it was totally worth it. To top it all off, it's BYOB without corkage charges. You can enjoy your own wine of choice (or wines, as was the case at our table) with your meal. Such well executed food at such reasonable prices seems unbeatable. Han 202 has become my favorite Chinese restaurant in Chicago. And for those fans of typical Chinese restaurants still reading this review, shame on you for not being able to follow simple instructions! read more

I'm still a fan of Han 202, but a few things have changed since my first visit, nearly two years ago. First of all, it's no longer $20 for the prix-fixe; it's been upped to $25. Still, it's a great deal for the food quality, presentation, and level of service you get. A bargain if you ask me. Second, it's no longer five courses, but four. It seems they did away with the soup course. It didn't really bother me, but as plenty on here raved about their crab soup, it's worth mentioning. They also added on supplemental charges if you wish to upgrade your entrée selection to lamb, and at least half of the desserts offered also require a surcharge. That's not such a big deal to me as I recall there was only one dessert option previously; I'm happy to pay more for a better dessert. We were given a gratis starter of fresh-cut truffle fries, which were a delicious, if odd, choice for a Chinese restaurant. Then again, the cuisine here definitely has a lot of French influences on the menu, so in retrospect, perhaps it wasn't all that odd. I was happy to see that they still offered the beef and green apple salad. It was every bit as refreshing as I remembered, and the contrast between the crisp, tart apples and the pleasantly chewy, slightly salty meat is fantastic. Both my friend and I ordered this and we both loved it. For the rest of our courses, we parted ways. I ordered the shanghai dumplings for my appetizer and she went with the salmon tartare. The dumplings were big and flavorful, and served with a vinegar-based dipping sauce. Her tartare was beautifully presented -a total work of art! For our mains, she went with the flounder and I opted for the rack of pork. Both were great choices. Her fish was flaky, delicate, and seasoned with ginger and fresh scallions. My pork came with a soy / lemon / balsamic reduction and had some fresh tomatoes and pine nuts scattered atop. We both went with "premium" desserts (read: surcharge): chocolate soufflé for me, and chocolate mousse for her. Mine came out piping hot in an adorable little copper pot, and hers was served with an edible gold leaf. I loved the soft, velvety soufflé. My only wish was that both desserts screamed for some whipped cream to cut through the richness of the chocolate, but other than that, these were a great finish to a terrific meal. Service is quite knowledgeable and friendly, the decor is lovely, and the noise level is very conversation friendly. I think Han 202 is ideal for a date or a small group, and with a "choose your own adventure" menu this varied and reasonably priced, there is no reason not to love it. 4.5 stars. read more

(UPDATE: Since getting ROTD, we made it back here and this place earned its 5th star in my book!) It's not fair to review a place its first week. The things you find to be great can get lost as the months go by, but the hangups get noticed and corrected as well. So here's a review from someone who tried out this place on its 5th day. At the moment, they have just a lunch menu. Their dinner menu is in progress, which is why they have the $20 Tasting Menu going, which combined with the 20% off Grand Opening discount for a $16 five-course meal. (UPDATE: The $20 deal is here to stay as the 5-course dinner menu!) Round 1: Char O. had the regular miso soup and I dared to try the spicy king crab miso soup. I liked the mild spiciness, and the crab added a definite edge over standard miso fare. I understand that the crab shell adds flavor to the broth, but when served, it was hard getting that crabmeat out without getting my fingers soupy. A couple of soupy fingers later, I had some excellent crabmeat and the rest of the soup to enjoy. (UPDATE: No more shell, just crabmeat!) Round 2: My girl went with the beef and lemongrass salad and I chose the seaweed vegetable salad. I like the Japanese seaweed salad, and this place did a good job with the seaweed and dressing. I would have preferred a little more seaweed and a little less iceberg, but it was still nice. We swapped a few times, and the beef was so delicate and well-prepared. I'm not too keen on lemongrass, but that's a personal taste decision and I can't blame Han 202 for that. I didn't even order the thing! Round 3: Char chose first and went with the crab rangoon, so I took the opportunity to try the Sushi Sampler as my appetizer. I gave her some of the fish (the sushi is all nigiri-style, which is the fish piece on a ball of rice, not maki-style, which is a roll) and she gave me a bite or two of rangoon. The rangoon was rather good, but only two pieces. Perhaps when they have a full menu, a full appetizer will have more of them. As for the sushi - this fish was so nice and fresh and good quality. I believe the four pieces I had were fatty tuna, halibut, tilapia and yellowfin. I could be wrong, though. The garnish included wasabi, ginger, some herbage and a single blackberry. How elegant... Round 4: Ahh, the main course. She went with the beef mignon (with miso sauce) and I was torn between the beef (mongolian) and the general tso chicken. I caved in with the general, and was not disappointed. You have to understand that I'm a guy who had lived with Chinese Kitchen General Tso's chicken for years. I know there are places that do it better, but there are many places that so so much worse somehow. This place fell into the pitfall of semi-raw vegetables (the green pepper mostly, which I rarely touch anyway), but the quality and taste of the chicken totally made up for it and then some. To have eaten a whole order of chicken from a place and not had to spit out any gristle or bone or weird-tasting bits or spend 2 minutes chewing some pieces - it was a godsend. In fact, that's the best part about this place - the meat was high-quality and high-flavor all the way through. Round 5: Mochi! She went with coffee (she's a coffee freak! coffee freak!) and I opted for strawberry. I had a feeling the waitress was going to keep listing the flavors, but all we heard was coffee, green tea and strawberry. I should have asked her to list all of them, but I was more than happy with my strawberry mochi. The elegant chef also included two cashews and I think two pecans and this little rice cracker as well. I love making Char turn beet-red in public, so I asked "do you want my nuts?" (UPDATE: There is only one dessert now, and it's a sorbet with extra tasty stuff.) So now we get to the decor. It's much nicer than the Trattoria 31 that used to be in this spot. I barely remember the place it was before that (Graziano's maybe) but the tables are nice, half of the seating is benches with cushy pillows and the chairs are all plush and comfy. It's a very decadent motif, though the pairing of Oldies on the radio didn't quite fit (UPDATE: It's now semi-techno upbeat music). The waitstaff were spot-on with everything. It's just weird when you're the only ones dining and the waitstaff are kinda pacing around waiting to do stuff, like wanting to pounce with the lemony water pitcher as soon as your glass is down from taking one sip. Still, over-service is better than under-service. The last test of the restaurant is the bathroom. Unfortunately, this one did not pass in my book. The walls are completely black. The one mirror is along the side wall, nowhere near the sink and up so high you can only see your face. The toilet is too close to the wall and I just couldn't use it. Waited til I was home. Either way, I recommend Han 202 and think more people should try it. This is (UPDATE: still) a place I'd like to stay open. read more

Ignoring my own opinions on the Uighur/Han clashes in China (ah, religion. . . at the stem of it again), paying a visit to Bridgeport was all but essential when two of our favorite cheeseheads visited for an all-too-brief Friday night out. Disposing of their three-year-old for a weekend of love, I followed Queen Colleen's "perfect date night" accolade. We were not disappointed. No reservation, 7:30 p.m. on a Friday, two handsome couples, seated. Done. King Crab Miso all around, green apple salad, walnut shrimp, sesame chicken (I mean, if you can do that well, I'll do you right and eat an urchin or other creature from the deep), and the most adorable little dessert that was the only thing to disappoint. The vanilla ice cream was watery and the tomato sorbet was unnecessary? But shit, with Scoops at such a stone's throw who gives a damn. And raise your hand if YOU go out for Chinese and can't wait to order dessert. I rest my case. Bailiff? Bond is posted at $20 a person. Easy parking and easy on the eyes, Han 202 is going to be on rotation more than MJ's greatest hits. I'm writing this to refute reviews by other customers who have been seemingly educated in a cardboard box under the Western Ave bridge. It upsets me to see people vomiting false statements on their computer screen about an establishment that serves high quality food in a neighborhood peppered with Pall Mall smoking degenerates (I can say that because I live 2 blocks away.) Also, who gives a restaurant one star for not being open? Yelp needs to add a filter. My friend and I decided to do an early dinner here about two months ago. There isn't a parking lot but there is ample, or, INFINITE amount of street parking. Valet parking downtown is much more expensive then the $3.00 street parking - so fork up the measly $3.00. You're going to a fine dining restaurant and count your blessings for it not being located on Michigan Ave where no parking is available. We entered the establishment WITHOUT a reservation and was seated at a open table. You do NOT need reservations if you are there early enough, or, if there are no reserved tables - which isn't likely. I highly recommend getting reservations but they are not needed unless you feel like gambling on an open table. Again, not uncommon in fine dining restaurants. The BYOB is definitely an attractive quality so we decided to purchase a bottle of wine before our arrival. Our waitress proceeded to open the bottle promptly (no cork fee, no fuss whatsoever.) In fact, the waitress suggested pairings to the red wine we brought. I'm unsure of why reviewers state they won't open the bottle, and even if they just provide the bottle opener and do not open, it's not like you have to run the Iron Man triathlon. It takes all of 10 seconds. Onto the waitress, YES, they do stand at the far side of the room facing the tables - but they are not staring at YOU. They are staring at your tables to make sure you are comfortable or ready for your next course, refill of water..etc. I'm SHOCKED to hear people complain about this kind of service. This isn't a negative. If you're embarrassed about having a waitress or waiter see you cramming an entire duck down your gullet, then learn how to properly use your knife and cut your meal accordingly. My friend used the bathroom and left her napkin on the table so the waitress came over and folded it nicely and laid it back on the table then left. Curse you, fine dining! We ordered an appetizer, entree, our main courses and dessert. Each was equally good as the last. Some portions were small but rightfully so. I do not like my appetizer to be larger then the main course. My friend has a very sensitive palate and she concluded it was of very, very good quality. I personally thought it was spectacular. I'm sorry my detail isn't great but it has been a couple weeks and I can't seem to find the menu online (which would have jogged my memory.) I found the price to be reasonable, but after reading other reviews you'd think it's Alinea. You have to remember this is fine dining in a neighborhood used to pizza places and Italian beef stands - where apparently $3.00 parking breaks the bank. Expect to pay for quality food. That should go without saying. Overall, I'm very pleased by this establishment and look forward to going again. Be smart. Either go there early for a table or make a reservation. BYOB it. This place is Bridgeport's best kept secret. The words "pan-Asian fusion" (should) strike fear into the hearts of many, as this is something that many do, and so, so very few do well. Han 202 is one of those places. I read about Han 202 here on Yelp, and I had been meaning to try it for a couple weeks, especially since I'm staying in Bridgeport and there's not much around here in the way of good food. Plus, we could walk there. Plus, BYOB. Han 202 serves a $20, five course, prix faire menu. We chose our appetizers, soups, salads, and entrees, and dessert was chosen for us. After we had ordered, the server brought out a little amuse bouche: a spoon with a piece of fresh, raw salmon with just a hint of mango and mint sauce. As soon as we tasted that, we knew we were in for something special. The fish was very fresh and firm, and the mango and mint sauce was really complementary to the rich, buttery salmon. To start, I tried the spicy king crab miso soup, and my boyfriend had the regular miso soup. The regular miso soup was just fine, but the crab one was really great--it had pieces of real crab (not surimi) and had a nice, light spice. Salads came next, and I tried the green apple salad, my boyfriend, the seaweed and lettuce salad. The green apple salad was tart, fresh, salty and delicious. The capers (!) in the salad were a really nice contrast to the sweetness of the green apple. I really loved the seaweed and lettuce salad; so simple, and so delicious. The seaweed and lettuce with sesame oil and just a little perfect strawberry to top it all off was probably my favorite dish of the night. For the appetizers, I had the sushi, which was three pieces of nigiri--tuna, salmon, and super white tuna. Like the salmon we had earlier, these were fresh and nicely prepared. The other appetizer we had was the salt and pepper squid. These little guys were addictive! I probably could have eaten a bowlful of these. Baby squid deep fried with salt and pepper, served with green peppers. Yum. My entree was not my favorite thing, which is not to say that it wasn't good, it just wasn't to my tastes. I ordered the prawns in Malaysian style chili sauce. I was expecting some heat, but my perfectly-cooked shrimp were served in a really sweet sauce. Ah well, I'll give them 9 out of 10, because the real winner of the night was my boyfriend's duck breast in Sichuan black bean sauce. This was awesome, because in many other restaurants, you'd be paying $20 for this duck breast alone. Cooked to a perfect medium-rare, the whole duck breast was served, uncut, in a delightfully tangy sauce. Dessert followed soon after, a house made duo of vanilla ice cream and mango-tomato sorbet--a refreshing way to end a meal. Service is extraordinary. Nothing gets past this team of skilled servers. Our pot of green tea was refilled when we got just halfway done with it; water was refilled in the same manner. Our five courses were paced really nicely, with just the right amount of time between courses. This place is perfect for a low-cost, impressive date. I was thrilled to have heard of a slightly more modern restaurant opening in Bridgeport. My friends raved about it so my boyfriend and I decided to pay this place a visit this pass summer. NOTE: I have been here twice, so will list both experience. I'll try to make it short. FIRST VISIT: It was Friday evening in mid July. The place was fairly empty, but I was excited to try their food as the menu looks like it had such great potential. The appetizers they served was refreshing. My boyfriend ordered a fish entree, and I had the steak (medium). Food came out and the fish still had the scales on the skin, making it nearly inedible. My steak was barely cooked - more like seared. to rare. It was still cold in the center. So, my boyfriend vowed to never return. SECOND VISIT: My girlfriends wanted to come here for a girls night out dinner. I've been meaning to give Han 202 another try, thinking maybe my first visit was just a stroke of bad luck. We ordered what most people had ordered in this review - you wouldn't want to order anything else as this is the most appetizing. We all had the Miso Soup with King Crab: Honestly, it's regular miso soup, with a few crab meat in it. The flavor of the crab definitely is not absorbed in the soup, hence how you can tell it was only topped on. For salads, all of us got the Lemon Grass Beef, with one girl ordered the Cucumber Crab Salad. The Beef with Lemon Grass is definitely a keeper. (Point). Appetizers: Seared Scallop, Pan Fried Ahi Tuna, and Calamaris. These were all ok, but nothing spectacular. If I had to choose from one, it would be the tuna. Entree: Orange Beef, New York Strip Steak, Chilean Seabass, and the Grouper. The Beef with Orange Extract - wow .. way too tangy and sweet. I couldn't finish my meal because the fried dough, with the sauce, made the beef almost unbearable to eat. The steak has improved significantly since my last visit. It's flavorful and COOKED!!! Their seafood department is still lacking. My girlfriends, who are Chinese, stated that their parents can cook a better fish - nothing worth raving about in that department. One of my friend actually disliked their Seabass dish. Those poor Chilean Seabass are becoming extinct as well! Seeing how of a fully menu, and only 3-4 dishes are edible, this place gets 1 star. However, their decor is charming and the price is reasonable - that deserves another star. I really wanted to give it a third, but cannot find a reason to. Perhaps another .5 star for the fact that it's BYOB. This place is another regular Chinese restaurant in disguise. I think it's catered to those who have few experience to Chinese food, and Egg Foo Young does NOT count as experience. It's ok for the price, but I do not see myself returning anytime soon.
