Hana Sushi is a decent, well-priced sushi spot in Stockton. It will not wow you, but if you're hungry it will do the job. I had the Alaska roll, which came with grilled salmon skin, avocado, and cucumber. The grilled salmon skin was so overdone that some of it tasted bitter. Some of the avocado was overripened, which only added to their poorly prepared roll. Some of the redeeming items were the grilled beef skewers, tempura, and Thai iced tea. Lowkey, this place has the best house salad I've tasted in a Japanese Restaurant. I think their rolls would hit hard judging from how they nailed their salad dressing down to perfection. The only disappointment was that half of the rice underneath the fish was made of filler ingredients (shredded radish and carrots), but I guess it's understandable since the chirashi was only $20. First time coming to Hana and was not greeted by the server. Walked in and the server just stared at me, no hello no welcome in. So I had to initiate and asked if I could order for to go. We ordered the sashimi, spicy edamame, dragon roll, cherry blossom, hana roll and the hamachi collar. Sashimi was ok but didnt taste fresh, son didn't like his rolls, the hana was drowning in sauce and was more on the sweet side than on the spicy side. Edamame was ok. I ordered a chirashi bowl, and the rice tasted like plain white rice--it wasn't seasoned at all. They only gave me 8 pieces of sashimi. This is my go to sushi place since I've moved to Central Valley . They have remained consistent the food is always fresh and the prices are very reasonable you can eat good for 20$ . We decided to order and share the following: *Gyoza *Rainbow Roll *Spicy California Roll *Hana Roll *Red Dragon Roll All of the sushi rolls were scrumptious and enjoyable. The one that I liked the most was the Hana Roll. The gyoza was crispy and had great flavor, too. The inside of the restaurant was nicely decorated. The ambiance truly stood out to me. I've tried a large handful of sushi locations and I think Hana is definitely better than big chains like Domo, but arguably worse than some of the higher quality locations I've been to. The fish in some of our rolls seemed less than fresh, edible, but not the highest of quality. Wait times are a bit long, it was a semi-busy night and we barely saw our waitress more than a couple of times. I used to like this place and it was our place to go to for our lunch break gatherings. But since new owners have taken over the food and service is not good. We have tried it twice thinking the first time maybe a big order was maybe too much for their first time taking over. Nope wrong it's not good at all!!! Sorry!! Food tastes old it's just not good anymore not fresh and presentation on the rolls lacks. Just miss Melissa the previous owner who seemed to take pride and seemed to know her customers and just seemed to care about the food and quality. The interior is charming, dimly lit, and romantic, maintaining a beautiful traditional Japanese ambiance that I absolutely love and appreciate! I requested no wasabi on any of my rolls, but it ended up in the roll box. Fortunately, it didn't touch the rolls, so I'm not upset about it. The tempura was pretty good, though the tempura sauce was a bit heavy on the soy sauce, but still enjoyable. The seaweed salad had a hint of lemon, which was unusual for me. I've never encountered that in other Japanese restaurants. It could be their style or a method to keep it fresh, or perhaps both. While it tasted clean, I'm not a fan of this version. The beef skewers were delicious. You really can't go wrong with them. I especially liked the pickled salad that came with it; it's a meal on its own! The dish follows the traditional Cambodian style of skewers and pickled salad, and the marinade was spot-on, with tender, perfectly cooked steak. The calamari, however, was basic and dry for my taste, and the sauce was plain. It wasn't bad, but it didn't stand out to me. The Hana sushi roll was surprisingly good, the maki baked scallop was decent, and the March Lane roll was also pretty good. I appreciated that the rolls didn't fall apart, the portions were generous, the sauces were light, and the presentation was nice. If you're someone who loves sauce, I'd suggest asking for extra. The first time I walked into the restaurant I was taken aback by the beautifully decorated space. I later learned that this is a family owned business and Melissa's husband designed the space himself! Hamachi Kama appetizer and pork egg rolls were delicious! Egg roll portion is very large. The Dream roll is a great spicy tuna deep fried roll. I thought the San Francisco roll had too much cucumber and was heavy on the sauce, so it took away from the shrimp, tempura and salmon. Small little Japanese restaurant in the middle of the shopping center. We frequently come and have ordered a variety of things from Hana. Sesame chicken is nicely breaded and flavorful. Saba shioyaki is a favorite of ours too. Just lightly salted which we love. Udon and soba noodles are also very good, the broths are some of the best I have had in a long time. COMBINATION DINNERS- the portions are literally huge. Basically 2 different dinners for lower price. Easily shareable but also, if you have a big appetite and often feel hungry even after a typical dinner, this will fill you up.
