I am a cat, so what cat doest enjoy Japanese food right? sushi is basically my best friend, and when I spy good prices on a bento box, It makes me quite happy. that is the reason I stopped into Hanabi. this place is tiny, and many of the tables seem to be crowded together. due to it being busy, we were seated a ways back by the kitchen area. the menu had a decent variety of options, numerous things I'd expect to see at your everyday Japanese restaurant. eyeing the appetizers, I noticed a fried crispy avocado. I decided it was different and unique enough to give it a go. I ended up ordering a very simple bento with Chicken terriyaki and rolls. Can I get anymore stereotypical basic? Oh well! The Avocado arrived first and it was served with some sort of orange sauce. the sauce was kind of bland I have to say, but it was definitely unique and something I had not had before. My companions bento arrived first and it looked very well prepared. I must say one thing that always makes me annoyed at some restaurants. And that is when they serve someone meal long before they serve another's. This is especially awkward when you have only two people. My bento came out quite some time later which was annoying, but as they were busy I can understand, but still, this is something I personally learned from working in a restaurant to avoid doing. My terriyaki chicken was slightly overcooked and dry in some parts, but the sauce gave it back some of the moisture it needed I feel. the rolls were decent although something about them felt a bit "not fresh". Its hard to place a paw on it, but it felt almost like those ready made sushi rolls you'll get in some supermarkets. After our meal, we got a dessert of a fried banana and ice cream bowl. For some reason, the server brought us the check before giving us the dessert we ordered. we asked, and she took the check back apologizing as they had forgotten about it. A bit annoyed at this... That said, this dessert was wonderful and I liked it a lot, and despite some of the issues during the meal, it made it up a bit. I think Hanabi has a lot of room for improvement, and perhaps maybe it's an issue of just being too small to handle such a large crowd with limited staff and quality control. The ladies that work here are so RUDE! My husband & I came for dinner. The restaurant was messy. The young girl COULDN'T even fill up my water because she was too busy texting on her phone. My food came out and they gave it to another table and the customer had to tell the waitress that wasn't her food. The waitress went and asked the other waitress about it and she then takes the food that she gave to someone else and drops it off in front of me. THAT IS GROSS! We were almost done with our meals when they brought our appetizer of edamame to the table so we paid for an appetizer that we didn't eat. Prior to coming here the only other sushi I had tried was prepackaged from Safeway. Boy have I been missing out! Yeah so come to find out that Safeway's so-called sushi is NOT Sushi at all. The Sushi here at Hanabi is very good. I cant count the numerous times in between bites that i was making sounds of pleasure. It was like heaven upon my tongue. Service was good and the waitress was very friendly. I sat outside to enjoy the beautiful day. I so far have tried the Dragon roll and the Rainbow roll. Both of which were excellent choices. Although if I had to pick again I prefer the Dragon roll. The appearance once served is nothing short of amazing .As you can see by some of the pictures posted. Almost to pretty to bite into. On my second visit I sat inside and the atmosphere is welcoming and clean. I prefer outside seating if the weather permits and if it is not too crowded. Also- warm green or black tea is served before your meal comes. Very nice way to start off the experience. Our takeout order was 20 minutes later than we were told over the phone. After arriving they kept saying it would be 1 or 2 more minutes. If they just told us it would be 20 minutes that would have been fine and we could have stopped into the grocery store or walked around. A customer ahead of us waited over 15 minutes and it turned out his order was ready the whole time in a bag they had marked with a different receipt. Once we finally got our food a worker ran out with another item and tried to force it in our car. We told her no because of covid but she grabbed the bag out of of my hands and forced an item in the bag while we told her not to. She did not say sorry or understand our concern. Pretty average tasting sushi. Not bad if you're out in the 925 and don't want to spend too much. It's a lot like Happy Sashimi in Pinole which I also reviewed, but not quite as good. They have a nice bar setting right in front of where they roll the sushi. In addition to seeing the sushi being rolled I was also able to see the men washing their hands throughout which is always nice to see when people are working with food with their bare hands. I didn't eat in so I sat at the bar while I waited for my order. I was helped right away by a hostess at the front counter. My food came in about the estimated 10 mins the hostess told me it would take. The presentation was nice even for a to go order. The colors were nice and it looked tasty. Absolutely the WORST Sushi/Sashimi/Bento I've had in my entire life. Just threw my entire meal in the trash it was so abysmal. I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki Bento which has Salmon Teriyaki, seaweed salad, 1 california roll, grilled veggies, tempura, tuna & salmon sashimi, and also comes with a soup and salad. I'll itemize my reactions to each portion of the meal. I would emphatically NOT recommend this place to anyone. I'd give this place less than 1 star if I could. *Rice: The only good part of the meal. Was seasoned and cooked correctly. *Salmon Teriyaki: Cold, Overcooked, and sitting in a congealed teriyaki sauce that was snot like in texture. *Seaweed Salad: Completely unseasoned *California Roll: Fake crab despite being listed as crab. If you're going to use fake crab LIST IT AS SUCH ON THE MENU. *Grilled Veggies: Extremely small shriveled DRY mushrooms with an odd texture like they had been previously dried out then reconstituted in water but not done properly, there was also broccoli which was fine. However, the entire thing was tossed in the same congealed snot-like teriyaki sauce as the salmon. *Tempura: Not cooked long enough. Shimp was soggy. Veggie was still slighly cruncy. Batter overall was soggy. *Tuna & Salmon Sashimi: Tuna was obviously the dyed tuna the lower quality shops use. The salmon looked slimy so did not touch it out of fear of getting sick from it. *Soup & Salad: Soup was on the salty side. Salad was fine.
