It's a little hole in the wall place but the food can be absolutely wonderful. Went there on a Wednesday and the togo orders were blowing up the kitchen and there was one waitress doing the eat in and take out. Normally the food is perfect, hot, the best. that night it was not as good. It was chaos in the kitchen , the miso was luke warm, not hot ,same with the tempura and the beef teriaki was unrecognizable. It didn't taste bad but it looked like beef jerky and was chewy. We didn't get a salad, or hot tea asked for both, but the waitress was doing her absolute best and was very nice. I will definitely go back , when they are on point, it's the best sushi I ever tasted, bar none. I do want to go on a night that's not so busy or has more employees. read more

So two of my friends and I arrive here and it's seems like nothing could go wrong. I only got sushi, but both of my friends order Ramen for each of them. The sushi arrived not long after and it was pretty good, But as I get to half way through my 3 orders of sushi, my friends are still waiting for their ramen. So I slow down so I can still eat along with them, and after a few minutes, one of the waitresses asks us if the ramen was to-go. My friend replies "no? It is for here". Then after that, he sees them unwrapping the ramen from containers and microwaving the ramen. So first of all, nothing should ever have to be microwaved in a restaurant, and second, how could they have come to think that the food was to-go? Overall, the sushi was pretty good, the ramen may have been good if it was fresh and not microwaved in a plastic container, the service was alright, but they difinitely need to work on their communication. read more

I see a lot of people complaining about the service being cold and distant, well I'm not sure when you guys are going but I've been there when its busy and there is a wait to when it's myself, hunnie and another couple and the service has never been anything less than wonderful. We've been to some really expensive sushi places but nothing beats Hanabi, the flavor, authenticity and truly the staff are great. I love walking in and they know us and greet us.. and they remember when I get the bento box that my hunnie gets my soup and salad. Disappointing... I love sushi and this place is right by where I live so I decided to give it a shoot. I ordered everything to go but won't be back. I ordered the scallop roll, lobster roll and calamari. The sushi was poorly rolled and some where oddly shaped. The lobster was rubbery and unappealing. The scallops had a brown sauce that I didn't think meshed well on the roll. The calamari was obviously frozen and was like an old tire. I almost finished one before throwing them away. Uninspired flavors and poor craftsmanship will have me driving to I Love Sushi in Concord next time I'm craving sushi. read more

As I wait here for an order I called in 40 minutes ago. To a waitress who had me yelling at my phone because she couldn't hear me over the noise in the restaurant. After I said my order, which I was afraid was only half heard, I heard a click, as I was rudely hung up on. In hopes she received the full order when I entered the restaurant, but of course, as I guessed right, only half my order written down. I had to wait another 30 minutes for it to finish. Terrible service. I would give it one but the food is decent. If you call in an order, expect to yell, not be understood or be able to understand, and set aside an extra hour for delay. read more

Delicious! I came here with my sister and we ordered 3 rolls which proved to be more than enough for us. I generally like spicy food so I knew I wanted a spicy roll. When I opened the menu, I was pleased to see that I had a LOT of choices. It was also helpful that they note which rolls are spicy via a brief description of each roll. I would personally recommend the Hot Night roll which is described as "shrimp tempura avocado cucumber topped with spicy tuna, crunch flakes, and special sauce". We came around 2pm on a weekday and there was barely anyone there. The rolls came pretty quickly, but it took a while for the waitress to bring the check around. I was very excited to try this place because my boyfriend spoke highly of it. This was my first time in the Martinez location, and unfortunately my last. My boyfriend and I had ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box and I had noticed there was sashimi included. He kindly asked if the sashimi could be replaced with something else because I never liked sashimi. I believe the lady who took our order got confused because she thought we wanted the sashimi box, but we never did. We ended up confirming that we wanted the chicken teriyaki bento box at the end. We went, we payed, got home and realized it wasn't what we ordered. With the food being untouched, we decided to call and see if we can get refunded or get a new order. She tried convincing us saying that is what we ordered and hung up on us angrily. My boyfriend and I were calm over the phone but sadly we never got our order changed or a refund. Weekday lunch can get busy at times here. I don't think I've tried the bento boxes - it's all pretty much standard fare, except the spicy chicken. Looks and tastes a bit Korean to me. Ordered the nabe udon and it wasn't too my standard (a la Sachi in San Ramon). However, I do like the sushi and it's been fresh for me every time. The last roll I tried was the Spicy Salmon Special (or those words in some other order), which was printed on a flier tacked to the wall. I'd prefer it if all the wall menus were taken down and condensed into the printed menu. Anyway it had spicy salmon on the inside and sliced salmon on top with a sprinkling of masago and sweet mayonnaise sauce. Yum, yum. Five awesome stars for Hanabi. The prices are great and you get more than what you pay for. Coming from Hawaii where Japanese cuisine is very dominant, I appreciate that this location is authentic to it's origin. The sushi chefs are very sterile and they work at such a fast pace. We came in about a half hour to closing and left with 5 mins on the clock. We were encouraged to stay as long as we want and not to rush eating, which I thought was very polite of them. Anyway the food was awesome I always get a bento box. My chicken teriyaki was full of flavor and gyoza was crispy the way I prefer it. The NY steak roll was awesome as well. We'll be back I recommend this place to anyone looking to get a lot of food for less along with the authentic taste and feel of Japanese cuisine. read more

I recently had come here with my sister as I now live in San Jose and I had come here once before many years ago when I was still in High School with a friend. it was nice revisiting the area, and we were both craving Sushi and my sister had suggest we come here for dinner. For dinner, we had both gotten the same sort of bento box deal. Our meal had included the Miso Soup which I thought was delicious and flavorful. Our bento boxes included a Sushi hand roll which I thought was delicious. I believe it was the Spicy Tuna Hand roll. Aside from that, our bento also included salad, California Rolls, Unagi Rolls, and rice. For about 30 bucks and 2 bento combination's, I thought this was an excellent deal, and it tasted delicious. Overall I give Hanabi a 3 Stars. Good price, a-ok food, and decent service. You can't go wrong with that! I'd recommend it if I had friends visiting with me in Martinez :-) read more

This is probably one of my favorite places to eat sushi, my girlfriend and i frequent this place often. Prices are relatively cheap for sushi, staff is friendly enough, place is small but quaint. Wouldnt recommend bringing a large group here as largest tables can only fit eight at max. Great place to bring a date, or small group. Food comes out quick. There are outdoor tables for nice evenings and lunch. Lunch specials are super cheap and great amount of food. Plus, i like to yell out HANABI in the deepest tone i can muster. Its fun. read more

the sushi is OK, a lot of the rolls are deep- fried, or have mayo on them, which i find strange. One time I ordered incorrectly and the waitress brought over a platter of tuna sashimi big enough to feed 6 people, it was meant to serve just me! When I questioned the waitress, she pointed out my ordering error but didn't offer to make it right. Did she really think that I had ordered a pound of raw tuna for lunch? It was busy, I was in a hurry, so I just paid the $50 and took it home. It made a decent (but obscenely expensive) stir fry for my family. There aren't a lot of places to eat around here by Arnold Drive so this is a really good place to go to for a sushi fix. Prices are fairly reasonable - today I got an orange California roll ($3.75 - 6 pcs) and spider roll ($6.95 - 5 pcs), which filled me up. The price is reasonable and they don't pack on the rice to make the rolls look big as some other places do so I'll just say "Good enough for Martinez". read more

Good sushi restaurant. It is in a strip mall which is always a little concerning to me but this place is solid. They have a large menu and prices are average. I have eaten there a couple times but my most recent trip was the best thus far. We were eating outside on a hot day and they made sure to refill our water glasses multiple times. Monkey balls were yummy! I did not enjoy my Nigiri plate, especially the imitation crab roll. The service was good, the facility is small, but we arrived early so it wasn't a problem. Anyways I end up placing my order take it home five out of the six sushi rolls immediately throw it all up. I took the 6 sushi roll brought back to the restaurant with my receipt and got a refund. The cook gave me the refund but he was not happy. He was asking me reasons why I felt sick and that there was no complaints throughout the day. We are new to the area so we decided to try this place.... we have now been there 4 times and I will never go back, the service is always TERRIBLE and the last time it was the worst, they push you out of the way to get past you and the last time I was trying to move out of the way so an older lady could walk by, and the waiter shoved by me then shoved by the lady!! It was SO rude! Also, one of the first times we went there the plates and bowls smelled like bleach like they are not being washed off correctly and it was like pulling teeth asking for a new soup (because it smelled like bleach) and new plates to eat off of. And this last time was the last straw for me, I ordered a roll which is supposed to come with salmon inside, he forgot, and being super flexible, I said no worries I can just put it on top, so he give me 2 slices of salmon, I politely ask him if he can cut it in pieces so I can put a little bit on each roll (which I explained), and he only cuts it in 4 pieces (there are 8 pieces in the roll I ordered) then when I said that he made it sound like he was going to cut 4 more small pieces for me, so I started eat and when I mentioned the other pieces, he said he would charge me 5 dollars more... I was pissed... I was being so flexible and he was the one who had messed up, to make it right I thought he would be super nice I could have just sent it back as asked for a new one... looks like I should have... I will never be back, I would rather drive across town then ever eat there again!! read more

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. ONE STAR ONLY BECAUSE I CAN NOT GIVE ZERO STARS. It saddens me as a woman that the women working here are rude and disrespectful. The one taking orders and money at the register, and the one serving the tables. I have been coming here for more than 15 years. But in recent years there has been extra unnecessary rudeness and blatant disregard for customer service. The food here is decent. I stay in walking distance so it's convenient and we come very often. But when you NEVER get a "Thank You" and ALWAYS get an attitude when you try to correct an order given to you incorrect, it's not worth it anymore. Also, asking for soy sauce for some reason is also a constant problem. I don't get, then when I ask It's like pulling teeth. I have children and my consistent orders here are no less than $70 each visit, usually $100, and that should garner appreciation, respect, and at the minimum a THANK YOU. But instead I get barked at to sign receipt, and just stared at thereafter. I will drive to concord for sushi before I deal with these rude people again. read more

I LOVE HANABI SUSHI! I discovered this place when I was working in Concord and nearly 10 years later it's still my favorite sushi restaurant hands down. I drive from Alameda all the way to Martinez when I crave sushi and it is always worth the drive. I've never tried a sushi roll I didn't like but my go-to rolls are the baked scallop and SF roll. Everyone I bring here becomes a new regular patron. It's a very small restaurant with some outdoor seating (not much) and the prices are reasonable. read more

Went to Hanabi sushi for Mother's Day with my family and received the wonderful gift of FOOD POISONING. I did notice that they had rolls pre-made sitting on top of their glass case. The service was horrible! We had to keep asking for water and napkins. The place was nearly empty. Now I know why. Three of us got food poisoning from their sushi rolls. I have attempted to call the restaurant a few times and keep getting told to call back. I am now going to call the health department. I highly recommend you patron another sushi establishment. I rarely even comment on restaurants. This one I could not pass by. I lost a day of work and was bedridden for 24 hours. I didn't even so much as get an apology and now they are not answering their phone. VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT I CHOSE THIS PLACE FOR MY MOTHER'S DAY MEAL.
