Hanami immediately caught my attention because they do traditional Japanese bentos. Think jewel box-style presentation, the kind you might remember if you've traveled in Japan. I went with their poke bowl, which was surprisingly affordable, and loved the option to serve over soba noodles instead of rice. Such a fun switch. The protein was hokkigai (Arctic surf clam), which you don't see everywhere, and it was fresh, clean-tasting, and nicely balanced with the rest of the bowl. Overall, Hanami feels like a quiet gem. If you're into traditional Japanese flavors, careful presentation, and a menu that does something a little different without being fussy, this place is absolutely worth checking out.
Our friends wanted to come here so we did. Luckily, I got a parking space right in front again! We walked in and were greeted. There were three other guests sitting at two separate tables. We were directed to the six-top at the back of the restaurant. Glasses of water, a carafe of water and menus were presented. A tray containing napkins and individual set-ups was also put down. The set-ups were probably convenient for the restaurant but also created unnecessary waste as each set was plastic wrapped with a small napkin, wood chopsticks, plastic spork, and paper wrapped toothpick. Service was adequate but lacked personality as if the server was simply not engaged in her tasks. Five guests at our table, five entrees ordered and served one at a time. Seems simple enough, yet when the last entree was delivered, instead of putting it in front of me (the only person without food), she still announced what it was to see where it went. We ordered: Crispy Fried Oysters - 5 - This plate of 5 Oysters and a ramekin of Tartar Sauce was placed on the table as our appetizer. While we each had our set-up with chopsticks and spork, none of us had a plate to eat off of. Salmon Sashimi Teishoku - 3 - The Miso Soup was excellent. Served hot with plenty of tofu and flavor. The Salmon Sashimi consisted of decent sized pieces of fish that were good. The Gyoza were okay but I've always preferred panfried and steamed over deep fried. The Wakame Salad tasted like most Wakame Salads, nothing special. The Mashed Potato was more like a Smashed Potato, chunky, not creamy. The Rice Ball, while tasty was rice that had been smashed into a mold. The Tamago was non-existent. Finally, the Crab Salad was not Crab Salad but Krab Salad. The fresh mango on top was a nice touch, but Krab is made from Surimi (a highly process fish paste), not Crab. Combo F - 2 - Without having looked at our review from last year, my wife ordered exactly the same dish that she ordered last time. She also enjoyed the Miso Soup. The Unagi Roll was okay but not generous with Unagi. There also did not appear to be any Unagi Sauce. Her Salmon was the same as mine. The Shrimp Tempura were crunchy but did not come with a dipping sauce. The Croquettes were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Tonkatsu Sauce would have been nice. The Edamame was fine. Our friends seemed to have enjoyed their dishes, but I did not ask them to rate their food.
TLDR: great menu with LOTS to offer. The food is delicious, just be patient with service as they don't have enough staff on hand. We had a party of 9 arrived just before 6pm but with only 6 four tops and 4 two tops, we had to wait a bit before they would give us 2 four tops together. Luckily, the family sitting at one of the four tops were finishing up their dinner. The waitstaff was obvious trying to do too much waiting on all the tables as well as managing the order pick ups. She forgot to give us water as well as chopsticks/napkins. My son ended up walking up to the cabinet to help fetch the missing chopsticks. When the food arrived, it was heavenly. Everything was delicious and perfectly made. The chef almost timed it so everyone was served at the same time.
This place is cozy, fresh, and really comforting. They offer unique teishoku set meals and combos that you generally won't find at other Japanese restaurants, which makes this place much more casual and homey. The employees are always very kind and accommodating, and the price is very fair for what you get. If you're a lover of sashimi, this is a good place to go to get your sashimi itch scratched. Parking is a bit challenging as there's no designated lot, but there's usually plenty of residential parking you can find in the surrounding blocks. I've only gotten the poke here (it's such bang for your buck!) but I'll definitely have to come back to try the ramen.
First timer here after looking for a local random spot to have lunch. Popped up with great reviews and it did not disappoint. Cozy with such a cute vibe, even with one worker, she got to us quick and efficiently. Great service and food came out fairly quick. We got here and most tables were full but we were able to snag one of the small side tables to grab a bite. Wish it was a bit wider because I got the soba which came in a big tray it barely fit the table with all the extra stuff we got but would def stop by again:)
This restaurant is super cute with adorable decor. My friend ordered the 6pc salmon sashimi teishoku and I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen with pork flavor. The plating of the teishoku was appealing. The salmon was very buttery and everything in the box was tasty. The tonkatsu ramen had great flavoring and the noodle had a nice texture. I recommend this cute little shop if you're looking for good vibe and comforting food.
In a nutshell; such a cozy place to dine in , with good Japanese food. Parking is a bit tough since there really isn't a dedicated parking spot but once you're pass that, this place gives you a really cozy atmosphere as you are sat. The server's very well mannered and accommodating. The menu has a good variety of choices and wasn't too long on the wait either. The food is great and prepared really well and presented nicely. Overall very pleasant experience and a place you should try if you dont mind kind of walking a bit off where you park if you can't find a parking nearby.
Black garlic tonkotsu ramen was delicious. Seems to be right on and been having this every single time we're at Hanami. The rich broth, and the springy ramen noodles. And the tonkotsu was flavorful, tender and just the right balance of meat to fat portion. Tonkatsu was alright, though some pieces were dry and didn't seem to be consistent to the rest of the portion served. Causes me to wonder if some pieces came from another tonkatsu. The miso soup that came with it tasted very watered down and so it wasn't appetizing, and even my kids rejected it. Chicken karaage was by far the greatest let down, not only was the chicken tasteless which should t be the case with true chicken karaage, but seems to be pieces of meat form together with some dough in between giving it a weird texture. It was very off-putting.
I came here on a Friday and the place was not very busy which I enjoyed. We ordered gyoza, a combo platter, a few rolls and ramen. They gave us some miso soup first then our gyoza came both very yummy. When our entrees came they took up the whole table but still somehow fit. The soup was your typical spicy pork but the katsu was definitely the star of the show! This is a hole in the wall place if you're around the area it's a must try.
Hanami Up to date, this is a top 5 sushi spot in the East Bay. Located in Oakland, there is parking available outside, and the area is beautiful and safe. Outside, you can see the menu Hanami offers. Indoors, it's is beautiful, clean and sanitary. Once seated, you are given menus and water. My sister and I craved rolls. I went with King California Roll: my sister went with Tamago Roll. From presentation, taste and after taste, this was a banger. The staff is amazing: very chill, very patient! This is a must return for me, and must go for you! read more

I came in around 8pm after a 10 mile hike at Chabot Lake. They close at 8:45pm and still took me in to be seated. I already knew what I was ordering so I wasted 0 time looking over the menu. The pork katsu ramen was exactly what I needed after that workout. The pork was nicely sliced with thick juiciness with every bite! The soup base was everything and more with endless flavor and authentic herbs. I downed it with a strawberry seltzer water can (I forgot what it was called but it was delicious!) I enjoyed the atmosphere the little ramen restaurant had to offer. I really felt as if I was sitting in a ramen eatery in Japan. 10/10 first time experience, I'm hoping I can weasel my way back when I have time. read more
We live down the street from Hanami and love this place! Everything here is great and so is the customer service. I've had their poke, bentos, and ramen. Their poke is a great deal for the amount of food you get. Their ramen is also excellent. I always order their Tom Yum Ramen with Chashu. Only downside with this place is we like to drink ice water and for some reason they are always out or low on ice. read more
Reminder to self. Do NOT get miso ramen because it's not miso ramen broth. 味噌汁 with ramen noodles tasted strange to me. I tried this broth because it was one of the 3 veggie options. Not going to try butter miso because adding butter to this would be even stranger to my tastebuds Toppings: egg is good texture but fridge cold so wait to eat until it's been buried under noods for a while. Silken tofu and Wakame with the broth really makes me think of miso soup. Corn. Sprinkle of green onion. Might ask to skip fried garlic next time. Noods are on the soft side, maybe ask to have less cooked next time. read more

This is more of a 3.5 but the friendly service bumped it up to a 4. At the former Noodles Pho Me location, Hanami is more of a hole in the wall spot that reminds me of a mom and pop shop. We came by for takeout and got the pork katsu set and a roll. Although I liked the mashed potato, gyoza side, and cute heart shaped rice, it is on the small side and nothing really stood out. The crab chowder croquettes that I really wanted to try was always sold out so I went for a roll this time. Just be prepared that their rolls are all topped with unagi sauce and there is an appearance of spam in half of them. Solid but a bit salty for my taste so personally still prefer the rolls at Kigawa. read more
It feels like we went to Japan for a second!!! Easily the most authentic home style Japanese food I've had in California period. The food is so well-prepared, and you can tell each component was prepared with so much care and detail. The teishoku is a really good bang for your buck, and the agedashi tofu blows you away with a silky texture, crunch, and perfect amount of sauce. The sashimi was all really fresh, and the pork Katsu was our favorite. Tender pork with a good crunch and peppery flavor to the batter. The ambience is really homey and cozy. Not too fancy, but makes you feel like you're at a mom and pop shop. They treat you so well here and the food came really quickly! Next time, I really want to try their poke bowls. A friend introduced me to this cute unassuming place a few months ago and it's been a great go-to when I need a chill hangout that's still amazing food that won't break the bank. My typical order: I love the bento combos with sashimi or the ramen combos! We've also had the hot sake and the ramen. Pros: - LOTS of options - it really is like a little Japanese choose your own adventure. There's ramen, udon, sushi rolls, sashimi combo boxes. So if everyone's in the mood for different type of Japanese food, this is the best place to compromise. - Decent prices - average cost per person is like $20 before tax and tip. - Decent quantity, especially if you get the ramen or the combo boxes. I love the variety of food you get with the combo boxes as well. - Really cute ambiance - casual, great for a family dinner or first date. - OPEN ON TUESDAYS - it's so hard to find Asian restaurants that are open on Tuesdays. - The waiter is so genuine and earnest! - holds up really well when you do doordash delivery! They package everything really well and securely. - Really cute takeout bags - Really delicious food all around! Have never been disappointed by what I ordered here. Cons: - Parking can be difficult on certain nights, you might have to go into the nearby residential area. - Sometimes they run out of certain items, but they do offer substitutions for no change in price. Overall, I really want this local business to thrive and survive! Hope it stays around for a while. read more
Came here for Thursday dinner and we were the only ones dining in. Some people were ordering takeout and waited on the bench by the door for their idea. The interior of the restaurant was cute and well-organized and it felt very homey. The food presentation was beautiful and you could tell they care about appearance as much as taste. The tempura was crunchy and paired well with the dipping sauce and the side dishes for the teishoku set were delicious. My friends also enjoyed the sets that they ordered and we were full by the end of the meal. Definitely recommend this spot if you're craving Japanese food! :D read more

Came here for dinner with my friend and when you enter, the interior is very cute. It reminded me of Japan where they have figurines that gave off a Japanese vibe and they do have ceramic bowls in the entrance that are honestly only for decoration. I will say that when we entered, there were a couple tables that were dirty and still had to be cleaned that when we came inside and said we needed a table for 3, the server had to clean the table for us prior before we sat down. When we sat down, the table was still very wet and our menus were stuck to the table due to the moisture. I have to say that they do offer a variety of food here from a few sushi rolls, ramen/udon, around 8-10 appetizers, and beers/soda. What made it confusing for me as a customer was what the restaurant was trying to be. Interior gave off Japanese vibes, the menu had pictures that looked like korean kimbap, they offered sauces that gave me hawaiian vibes (hawaiian sauce, mango sauce?), but also they had the typical Japanese dishes such as teriyaki chicken/bento boxes. You can customize your own poke bowl where they give you an expo marker to mark off what you want. Like I said earlier, they had sauces that gave me hawaiian vibes which was interesting. I liked that they gave the option of soba noodles as a base for an extra $2.00 though. It was odd for me to see broccoli as a topping option as most poke places I've been to never offered that... Overall, the poke tasted okay, didn't seem as fresh tasting as I am used to. I ended up trying the hawaiian sauce with the mango sauce and it just tasted interesting and sweet. My husband ended up ordering the tonkatsu spicy garlic ramen and he said that the broth was good, but the noodles were meh. The noodles reminded him of ram-yeon noodles...it didn't seem like japanese noodles to him. The chicken karaage presentation wise was interesting. It looked like whoever made them just made it into a ball and put it in the deep fryer. While the chicken was good, it tasted like mochiko chicken. I give the karaage here a 2/5 to be honest and the dipping sauce was way too runny that it was hard to get any sauce onto the karaage. The food overall here was 2.5/5 and the service was 3.5/5. read more

Very unassuming, cute little place serving some BIG flavors and portions at reasonable prices. Located along the street, it would easily be missed as you pass through but since we stopped at the local bakery, we happened to discover Hanami just down the block. What a wonderful discovery indeed! Having heard great things about their poke bowls, that's what we ended up ordering to go with an unagi roll on the side. Upon entering, you'll be greeted with soft toned walls and cute decorations scattered around the dining room. It was well lit, clean, and orderly. A lot of seats. Very beautiful interior. Great first impressions! The staff member who took our order was very helpful and respectful. For poke bowl orders, you'll be given a card and a dry erase marker to customize your bowl. It's quite simple - choose the 2 protein or 3 protein option, the rice, protein options, mix-ins, toppings, and sauces. If you are curious about anything on the menu, they actually have an FAQ sheet with pictures to inform on the different sauces and protein options. I was mostly impressed with their protein options which included your staple tuna and salmon but also available was arctic surf clam, scallops, and escolar. You don't typically see these offered at poke places so we obviously had to give these a try. The poke bowls are portioned really well and come out beautiful! The topping to rice ratio is great! They don't try to fill you up on rice, but instead fill you up (seriously full) with their toppings and proteins. The unagi roll was also an interesting take as it included ingredients you wouldn't typically find in other shops. Included in the roll was spam, tamagoyaki (egg), and imitation crab. It was topped with some sauces and was a nice appetizer or top off to the poke bowl. Overall, I would definitely recommend coming here if you're in the area. Whether you dine in or take out, you will be satisfied with the quality, quantity and price of the food. Service is great and there's free parking. And it's not too far off from the highway if you need to hop out for a quick bite and back to your day afterwards. Definitely will be coming back to try their other dishes! read more
We went on a Sunday night close to an hour before they close so it wasn't too busy. We got greeted by a super friendly staff and were seated right away. The interior of this place is really pretty and decorated, very aesthetically pleasing. It will definitely keep your eyes busy while you wait for your food. The ramen and takoyaki we got were delicious. The portion size was very good and it was definitely very filling. The noodles had good textures and you can tell it was some quality noodles. The broth was rich, but it might've been slightly too rich for my liking, but if you like rich broth then this would be perfect. The only thing with this restaurant is that the parking is street parking. They don't have any designated parking lots or spots for the restaurants so you have to park either on the main street or the neighboring residential areas. I will definitely come back since this place is delicious! read more

Small cute place. From the outside it looks like a hole in the wall spot, but when you go in it's pretty spacious and bright. The food was pretty good. - black garlic tonkatsu ramen: The soup and pork was very flavorful. The egg that it came with was lacking in taste. It was really just a soft boiled egg that hasn't been marinated. The noodle texture was just right. - karaage: can't really go wrong with it. The dipping sauce was good too - vegetable tempura: big portion of veggies. Love that - agedashi tofu: my favorite item. It was lightly crisped on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. We happened to be in San Leandro and chose this restaurant for my mother-in-law's bday (first time for us). It's a cute restaurant with cute displays. IMO, portion sizes were good, food was good and we received great customer service. Food was served in cute dishes. My kid liked the heart shaped rice. As I lay on my bed looking at the empty ceiling, I was reminded that my tummy was also empty and as such I needed to refuel. While scrolling through the vast sea of yelp recommendations, the light at the end of the tunnel that was this restaurant stuck out and I decided to give it a try. Actual review starts here: had the spicy garlic salmon ramen cause that was the most popular choice from the other reviews as well as a yellowtail collarbone just cause I liked fish. I had to say that I wasn't to impressed with the flavor of the broth as it was weak and using a ladel was awkward. The noodles were a little to chewy for my liking and the eggs were boiled for too long. The thin slice of salmon although nice and crunchy ends up soggy if to much time passes. You may be better off with the pork slices instead. The side dish, the yellowtail collar was very fatty and moist with a fried surface which was nice (needs a side of rice or pickled veggies.) They have a nice selection of drinks for alcoholic drinks, although I don't have quite the taste for alcohol, the nice scenery + location + menu would make this a nice place to hang out with friends. I'm gonna need to pay this cafe another visit as I'm tempted to try their crepes, but overall not to bad a find. read more
This place is such a vibe. My friend has been living in Japan the last few months and has been posting an obnoxious amout of food photos so I suppose this is what lead me to Hanami. I was the only person in there and I LOVED IT. From the music to the decor to the friendliness of the people who worked there. I went with the sushi, which I would not say was out of this world good but on this hot day did the trick. I will be back for sure. I loved the mango cheesecake and the tea. read more
Very clean and neat environment. The beautiful wall and japanese decor made the atmosphere very homy. Great service. Portion was quite large. Very filling. It was a cool day so we all got ramen and udon. All of us enjoyed our delicious ramen. There are 2 hrs street parking but no parking lot. After we ate there, customers kept coming in and even a police officer came for take out order. Overall the surrounding environment seems safe. Note: it's location is only a few minutes drive from Oakland Zoo. So if you are in the area to visit this zoo and looking for a lunch place, I highly recommend this restaurant. We will come back for the sushi another time. read more
It's been about a year since my previous review of Hanami. The menu has changed a bit. My most recent visit was subpar. The decor is still very cute and thoughtful. I love all the trinkets and pastel decor. Service was quick! I ordered ramen, with the "Tonkotsu" protein and spicy garlic pork broth. The broth was very very salty- almost overpowering. They have a good portion of pork, but it was very tough to chew. The noodles were good, but I didn't enjoy the broth flavor. In addition, I ordered California rolls for my family back home. The to go packaging is very thoughtful. However, the sushi rice was very mushy and had a heavy vinegar taste. Not sure if the price matches the value of the food. read more

I have not thought of trying Hanami in San Leandro, but when my boyfriend wanted ramen, and that was one of the options that popped up, we decided to check it out. I wasn't feeling for ramen, but he wanted ramen, so this was a win-win for both of us. It looks like Hanami has street parking only, and luckily, we found one right on the same block. We came on a Friday, around 6PM. This place was relatively quiet, but the interior was clean, and cutely decorated. I especially like their carp streamer displays and the teacups they have at the entrance! There's probably only around 10 tables or so, so a pretty small place. My partner picked their Seafood Ramen, and I opted for a Poke Bowl. I was so intrigued that they had a Cold Soba noodle base, that I ended up going for it. I had a regular size Poke bowl with Tuna and Scallop as my protein choice. I mixed in carrots, edamame, cucumber, green onions, and purple cabbage. Topped with ginger, seaweed, broccoli, fried onions, crispy garlic, and tomatoes. I ended up going for their Spicy Miso sauce and added Tomago on the side. We also got an Agedashi Tofu to share as appetizer. Now, Soba noodle may catch your eye as well for a base, but as I was going through my Poke, I realized why it doesn't go that well as a Poke base. Soba is very good when it's made simply with a soup base or with a dipping sauce. But it's relatively rare to find good soba around the Bay. I haven't come across any aside from Soba Ichi, so when I saw it on Hanami's menu, I really wanted to give it a try. But I think because there's so many other ingredients and sauces mixed into the Soba, it just tastes bland compared to everything else in the bowl. The sauce and ingredient bits clumps up with the noodles and it's just not a nice, slurpy texture. That being said though, I think the Poke bowl was worth the price and it would be good with a different base. I really enjoyed the scallops! Their were smooth, soft, and fresh. They're pretty generous with their ingredients. I do think their Tamago, which was an extra $1, was a bit lacking in sweetness. And I wish they had more simpler sauces to go with the bowls, like just regular Ponzo sauce, or a Yuzu sauce would have probably paired better with the Soba. Something more fluid-like. As for the Agedashi Tofu, my partner and I enjoyed this appetizer a lot! We were quite amazed at how the crust held up despite how thin it was. The crust was crispy, and the tofu was silky soft. It's light and goes well with the sauce! The bonita flakes on the top adds a lot of flavor as well. My partner also enjoyed his Seafood Ramen. It's a generous portion for the price, and worth the price tag. I gave it a try, but I kinda wish the ramen was less cooked and more chewy. They gave plenty of seafood! We're glad we gave Hanami a try, and that we found a good local place to eat if we're ever feeling for a variety of Japanese foods. read more
On the lookout for a new ramen place recently after we stopped going to Ramen101 years ago. Not many options in this area! But I happened upon this place on Yelp and it looked perfect. - Restaurant was super cute, with lots of little decorations everywhere and a big mural of Mt Fuji with cherry blossoms on the wall, colorful glass lamps on the ceiling. My daughter wanted to walk around and look at everything and sit on the comfy futon with its cute flower pillows. - Has different broth options, rather than just Tonkotsu. I prefer shoyu myself, and not every ramen place even offers it. The shoyu broth was very tasty! - Doesn't skimp on pork. Slices are super thick and crisped on the edges. I'm a light eater and ended up taking some pork home with me. - Lets you customize exactly what you want on a nice plastic menu you can write on to be very clear about it. - Other options for ramen toppings! Chicken, beef, pork katsu! So much to try! - They also have poke? With a similar "fill out this form to get exactly what you want"? Looking forward to trying it next time! I love when ramen places have other food options for when my husband and I can't agree on what to have for dinner. read more

I use to come here all the time when noodles pho me was here so when this opened I never even thought to come . It was a rainy cold day and we saw this place had ramen ! My poke bowl was delish and the Tonkotsu ramen was so flavorful . They had a promotion for free gyoza and it was so flakey and delish ! I also got a free cute keychain . Cannot wait to come back and try other dishes . The space is decorated super cute too . read more
Hanami is a wonderful little hole in the wall. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and how cozy it feels. It's a perfect place to bring a book and read while eating. I really enjoyed the portions that they give here and the presentation of all their food. This place gives me very Japanese bookstore Café vibes, and I love the decor as well. The staff here are very attentive, but also not very pushy in terms of giving you space to enjoy your food. read more

Pleasantly surprised by this cute little Japanese restaurant in San Leandro! I love the cute little tables and the Japanese decor on the shelves. For lunch I ordered a salmon poke bowl- you could pick and choose what you wanted in the poke bowl by writing on their dry eraser marker menu. When my salmon bowl came out , I was surprised by the quantity of fish and other toppings in the bowl. They were very generous with the scoops of salmon which was a huge plus in my book. Salmon was fresh and yummy! Def would come back and order from them again. read more
I'm half Japanese and love me Japanese food. Grew up on the stuff and been to the homeland several times. Hana I ranks right up with the best Japanese food I've ever had. We went on a Sunday around 7:30pm. Located in a mostly residential neighborhood, we found easy parking right in front. Only 1 other couple eating, so we had our choice of tables. Bright and airy inside with some really nice Japanese decorations. Their menu is great. In addition to the Japanese staples (sushi, tempura, teriyaki) they also have poke. Ordered 2 poke bowl, a chicken teriyaki bento and a chicken Katsu bento. The poke was served in a huge bowl. The bentos came a musubi, seaweed salad, crab salad, miso soup. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted great. Service was excellent, menu and food fantastic, prices are reasonable. Highly recommend. read more

I've only tried the bento boxes, but sadly they discontinued it to replace it with these smaller sets. I've doordashed from them a few times, and food was always prepared quickly. So far I've tried the teriyaki beef and chicken and the meat is cooked properly! Wish the chicken was grilled instead of pan fried(?). I can taste the oil that it was fried in, which can overpower the teriyaki sauce. Salmon slices are thick! When you stack em together you can see that they give a good amount for the set and don't skimp out. The sides are okay...imitation crab salad is whatever, seaweed salad and the gyoza are good. Love the concept and menu of this place, honestly surprised I haven't been more. This is in the place that Noodles Pho Me used to be, and while I loved that place, I am more than happy with its replacement. I would come 2x a month if I still lived down the street. read more
