We ordered 3 roles last week and when we drove to pick it up and got back to work we only had 2 roles in our bag. Since the bill was so much we assumed we paid for it. I called to speak with them and the person on the phone had said h read the Oder back. I told him he didn't and that I ordered 3 roles. He said he would make another one but as we only have 30 min lunches it was not worth it and so he took down the name and phone number and offered a discount for next time we ordered. Well today we ordered and asked about the discount and he said well we can talk about that when you pick up the food. Upon arrival he proceeded to tell me that he took the order and we didn't pay for the 3rd role, I get it paid for with those prices we thought we did. So explaining to him well it was ordered and you offered a discount I would appreciate that honored. He offered to take care of the soy wrap.. I laughed because that's 1.00..... 1 whole dollar for being talked down to and wouldn't budge. You lost 2 customers and will make sure our business knows about yours and will take all of our business elsewhere. Customers should not be treated like that even the supervisor wouldn't do anything. read more

If you are a serious sushi lover - this is the place for you. The sashimi is always fresh.Good prices, great service. My wife doesn't eat raw fish like I do, however, they have a great menu for battered and fried vegies, shrimp and some really tasty custom sushi rolls that they make to please anyone. We usually have wine or saki with dinner and I am always suprised when the bill comes. Lower than I would have expected. Do give this place a try. read more

From the time we entered the restaurant to the time we left, we had a total of three different servers at our table. Gal that cleared the table and sat us with the menus disappeared. Order was taken by another server. First round of food was brought to us by server #1. Edamame was under-steamed...almost raw and fresh picked from the field. We ordered the sushi deluxe, but were unable to choose which type of Nigiri we would get. When it was brought out, we weren't even told what was what on the plate. We matched it up with the pictures on the menu. Oh yeah...no wasabi or ginger... needed to ask for it. First plates of sushi rolls came out. Server pointed to the spicy tuna and said, "This is kind of weird, but it tastes better than it looks". (Oh yum...I really want to eat now) Rice was dry and tasted old. I've had grocery store sushi that was better. Nothing impressive. Meal almost finished, server #3 brings us the tab without even asking if we wanted dessert. I asked for the green tea mochi. The menu stated that the serving is 2 pieces. To me, this means 2 mochi balls with ice cream in them. The plate came out and it was ONE mochi ball cut in half. Technically, I guess this could count as 2 pieces, but for $3.00, I call Bullshit. We won't be going back to this place. We have eaten sushi all over the place...best one we have found is actually in Concord, CA. read more

I love the ambiance at Hanami, and for many years it has been my favorite sushi place. However, the last two times I have gone it was not great. The spicy tuna had a really weird consistency.....too soft, for the last two times. I hope they will look into this, as I do love the restaurant, but I won't be back for awhile. I went on a Wednesday and it was packed, which I do not think they were expecting, as they seemed really overwhelmed. The service we received was not great, although I do think it depends on where one is seated. I am sure on a better staffed night the service will be better. read more

I live in Sacramento and we drive all the way to Auburn just to eat at Hanami. Its a nice looking restaurant right in the middle of old town Auburn. They have the best hands down miso soup and udon soup. I always try a different roll each time I go, and they haven't failed to impress me yet! Overall great atmosphere in and around. I order the sushi delight combo. This included four pieces of a California roll, a spicy tuna roll, and 8 pieces of nigiri. I also ordered 2 pieces of the scallop nigiri. The two rolls tasted fresh and the rice was done perfectly. Most of the nigiri tasted alright as well, it wasn't fantastic but not terrible. Of the eight pieces, one piece was Tamago (egg) that's a bit of a rip off when you're paying $20 a plate. The sweet shrimp piece tasted dirty and somewhat old. The eel and other fish tasted fine, no complaints there. However, the two scallops tasted like they were soaked in ammonia, it was so terrible I spit it back out and sent it back. I love raw scallops and order them from every sushi play I go. I don't know what was wrong with these scallops, but I was very concerned I would get food poisoning. To the restaurants credit, they did take them off my bill. I will not be going back to this sushi place. read more

This would be a five star review if the wait staff was more knowledgeable and experienced. The atmosphere is relaxed, though the main dining floor is a bit cramped. The food is really good. They have an extensive sushi menu and good bento box selections. The sashimi and nigiri is always very fresh. read more

I never review anything but I've been eating here at hanami since 2008ish. For me this is what sushi should be and the yardstick that I use to measure other sushi spots. Customer service is warm and first rate- mama met me with a hug when she saw me, and I haven't been here for a year( we live out of town now.). The sushi was very good, the fish fresh and firm. I really enjoy the variety of rolls. I highly recommend the sex on the beach and the Lincoln way. My two favorites. Cold beer (Sapporo) and a great terrace add greatly to the experience. As I said this is my yardstick and to be 100% honest hanami isn't the best sushi I've ever had. It's very, very good and a pleasant surprise to find in the foothills of the sierras. I've had better in a couple places - New York, Honolulu- but it's rare. Hanami is better than almost anywhere and it's great that it's in auburn. It is for that reason that I give it full marks. Their sushi is very good. We like the Hawaiian, Rainbow, and Reagan rolls. Atmosphere is decent. Service is slow every time. Price is a little high compared to other sushi restaurants. This time we went for a late lunch during the 2:00 hour on a Saturday. .. when we asked to add another roll to our order, we were told that the sushi bar would be closing soon. Apparently it did close while we were still eating, because they turned the music off. :) We would eat here again, but we'd rather go to Roseville. read more

I have been to Ninja Sushi once and this place once. The prices here are much better than Ninja Sushi. They have a large selection of rolls for under $10. The ambience is better as well. All the waiters and waitresses dress in more traditional clothing. The Old Auburn roll is very good. On a Saturday, it was a pretty popular place. read more

In short, we live in Loomis , which if your not familiar, is less than 10 miles from Hanami.We have eaten at Hanami at least 10 times, but last night was our last, the food has always been good, but the service and management has always been horindous, but we are the forgiving type of family and always gave them the benefit of doubt. We are no longer in doubt that the management has some serious flaws. The major flaw is that no server has a station in the Resturant and all severs share all stations, which leads to some major confusion, ie: long wait times and order mis management. There servers have told us all severs share tips and the management takes a cut of the tips, which I see as wrong. We are done with them and sujjest if you don't mind terrible service, the food is pretty good. read more

Just stopped by for lunch on our way home from Tahoe, where we had a dismal culinary experience. Hanami was a refreshing change! Excellent service, extensive menu and delicious sushi. Moreover the prices are very reasonable. My husband and I shared a red dragon roll and two item bento box lunch special. It was plenty of food for the two of us. Great Sushi, but wish we could have had a better server. The young blonde girl obviously did not like her job. She never checked with us for drinks that sat empty, never removed empty bowls and plates..we had to set them over on the counter in order to have room on our small table. When ever I go near Auburn or pass Auburn I will always stop by to see if they are open. This restaurant is great. Every single time I went, food would only take 10 minutes. I've been here twice; the first time, not so bad, the second- nothing but regret. The fish is generally tasteless and the service is mediocre at best...one lady stands around doing nothing (maybe that's her job). Save your time and money here folks and go elsewhere. I was referred to Hanami sushi by a friend who told me they have amazing rolls. I was immediately skeptical because I have had sushi in Japan before. Hanami sushi is on Japanese level of sushi; the main Chef is from japan and cuts the fish quite well. If you're a sushi connoisseur, then, I believe you will appreciate the rolls that Hanami offers. As a sushi connoisseur one understands that the Cut makes an immense difference on the taste of the fish. The service was excellent. I had asked for a recommendation for a roll and the server had given me a list of about 15 different rolls that were her personal favorites. There is a vast amount of rolls to choose from. The have vast amounts of drinks to offer one. They have anywhere from Pepsi products to teas to sake. I highly recommend this place to anyone and have referred all my friends as well. read more

Impressive atmosphere. I really wanted to enjoy this place. However I was given a roll smothered in a mayo based sauce. Literally smelled like straight up miracle whip. This wouldn't have been an issue if this was my own fault, I know that with my hatred of mayo I have to always confirm which sauces are used on whatever I order. I had confirmed when ordering that my roll came with the unagi sauce. The waitress didnt mention any white sauce. The waitress didnt admit to the miscommunication but was insisting it did come with both sauces completely ignoring the fact that 5 minutes ago I has asked about the sauce. She did try to pick up the plate to have it remade but was stopped by the manager who made a bit of a scene trying to figure out if the mistake was my fault. Pointing to the menu and the word "sauce". Again ignoring that I did ask about the sauce when i originally ordered. She offered to take the roll back and scrape off the sauce but did not want to remake it. It was swimming in this sauce no way would scraping it help. Eventually she agreed to completely remake it. At this point it was already super awkward and she came back with a different roll similar from what I ordered. I ordered the caterpillar which was supposed to be stuffed with eel but was replaced with a roll stuffed with shrimp and a very thin slice of eel on top. I didnt press it but asked to take it all to go since we did not feel welcome any longer. I really don't usually complain but this was horrible service. read more

We recently moved to Auburn and we have been looking for good sushi. Tonight was our anniversary and decided to take our 7 and 2 year old with us for dinner. When we arrived the tables downstairs were full so they offered us a table upstairs and we agreed. It was at least 100 degrees out today and were dismayed to find we were the only people upstairs and the a/c had been off. They sat us and turned on two small portable A/c units and left us with our menus. Within minutes I started getting lightheaded from the heat but I was hoping a glass of water may help until the room cooled more. We waited for our server to return to ask for drinks. A few minutes later a table of three adults was seated near us. Within another minute they were given ice waters and their orders were taken. We were still waiting and basically completely jealous of their ice water. I'm not sure why the other table took priority- maybe because they were adults and we had kids? Maybe they thought the other table would tip better. I was a server all through college and as such am a very generous tipper. My lightheadedness was worsening and the kids were feeling it too so we decided to get up and leave. Sad about this anniversary fail...we will not be returning. read more

Worst service ever! After we were seated and given menus, we sat for over 20 minutes with no greeting, no water, and no hope of ever getting our order taken. Our server was a master of planned ignoring as she walked by us at least 20 times and would not even acknowledge us. To make matters worse she served a table that was sat 10 minutes after us. Our attempts to flag her over were also ignored. Being a former server, I understand things get hectic but you can still greet your table and ask for help. Our server clearly needs some basic training or lacks the common sense to work in a restaurant. Her behavior was inexcusable. After 23 minutes we got up and left, frustrated and still hungry. We ended up going to sushi in Roseville and received amazing service and delicious sushi. I do not recommend hanami sushi and I will not be returning. I am only giving one star because a rating is required. read more

I would not recommend going here. My niece worked here and the owner is stealing the tips, belittling the staff and bullying the teenage kids that work there. She will not give them tips for four months and charges them for errors they make in meals (full price) which is totally illegal. There is huge turnover because the staff is young and afraid to go to the labor board. They are always hiring because it is a horrible work environment. Don't support this business. Mama San, the owner is not honest and this is all bad and we don't want this in Auburn. My niece did not have a work permit and was serving alcohol at 15 and has since quit. If owner can't abide by the laws she needs to go elsewhere. We are turning her into the California Labor Board so she can abide by the laws. I lived in Japan for two years and this restaurant is expensive and not anything to write home about despite some of the reviews. I was not impressed and the Tonkatsu was over cooked and horrible. Sushi and rolls are OK but I have gotten cheaper sushi and rolls in San Francisco, Tokyo and New York and the prices are far too high for the small town of Auburn and the quality of the food IMHO. read more
