I grew up in Hancock and spent many evenings having dinner there and have many fond memories there. It was a great local place that welcomed people from town. Now - who knows who owns the place - but it is incredibly out of place here in town--as they don't seem to care about locals - perhaps because they want affluent guests from out of state. The Inn feels very pompous and pretentious almost garish with its decor - and not to mention, incredibly expensive. Expect to pay around $600 for a dinner for 4 with a bottle of wine. My $62 Steak was over-cooked and I sent it back and they replaced it to my liking.... but the server was hardly apologetic and seemed perturbed that the meal wasn't perfect. Not to mention the steak knives were not sharp enough to cut the steak. Come on now Hancock Inn! I expect more out of you. I won't go back - and I've alerted my friends in town about my experience. Go have a bite across the street at Fiddleheads or go to the Waterhouse in Peterborough! There you'll get a great meal and great, friendly service at a decent price. read more

We had a nice meal on the porch of the Fox Tavern last night, celebrating our 39th anniversary. The menu choices were not outstanding, but all of the dishes were well-prepared, and both the food and the wine list were very reasonably priced. I had the dry-rubbed pork shoulder and the gingered mashed sweet potatoes, and shared a summer salad with my wife, and a pavlova for dessert. Nasty thing about the pandemic is that food sharing does not work so well, but everybody else said that they were enjoying their food. What a great place to have Easter dinner! The locatio is so quaint and picturesque. The staff is ridiculously friendly and helpful and the food and drinks were amazing! I can only give feedback on the food I ordered, I started with a roasted beet salad with mixed greens and goat cheese. The dressing has undertones of blood orange so it was quite citrusy and tasty. Next course was the Ricotta Gnocchi with wild mushrooms and spinach. The wild mushrooms were perfect in all ways - large and flavorful. I would definitely suggest this meal if you want something meat free and filling. And last, I didn't order a dessert. I opted for a dessert drink and ordered the Brandy Alexander and it was delectable. I will say that I did try the salted caramel from the sticky toffee pudding and it was so creamy and amazing! Very lovely spot in southern NH. A Peaceful, quite, romantic getaway in the middle of what can truly be only described as nowhere. This was a very lovely inn, and the innkeeper Marcia was very accomodating and took the extra steps to help my husband and I feel right at home. We checked in late on our arrival night, and Marcia was up and made my husband a snack plate because he was famished from the traveling. The breakfast was phenomenal, I loved the freshly made breakfast sausage. My egg was poached perfectly by Jarvis (the other innkeeper, Marcia's husband). The inn was located walking distance to Norway pond, which was very nice. The surrounding area was very quiet, and since I stayed there on a weekday, I was the only one walking around the pond, the white church, and the cemeteries (there are 2 cemeteries nearby). There was also a deli and a market across the street. We stayed in a room that had a claw-foot bathtub in the alcove (please see that picture I posted). It was a cute and whimsical addition to the room and gave it character. My husband and I had dinner at the inn, and I was very happy with the service and the menu. The front desk clerk was very helpful in providing us with information regarding activities and things to see around Hancock. My only complain was that everything here was so creaky (it's an old inn after all). But other than that, everything here was very lovely and we enjoyed our stay. read more

I stayed at the Hancock in this past weekend. It was great! The inn is beautiful. Built in 1789. It is the oldest inn in NH and it has been beautifully preserved. The rooms were very nice and well maintained. It was a cold night but our room was warm & comfortable. We had breakfast the next morning. I had blueberry pancakes and my son had the egg sandwich with sausage. The food was delicious! The owners (Jarvis & Marcia) as well as the other staff (Rhonda) were very friendly and welcoming. The food here rivals any major city hotel establishment. The local farm raised venison was beyond amazing. The flourless chocolate cake with cabernet sorbet should be illegal! The inn makess their own breads and the brioche used to make the french toast was perfect. However I did not taste the orange flavor. The corned beef and hash was very very lean and 90% beef and small shreds of potatoes. Plus they make their own sausage, and granola too. All I can say was wow!!! Fresh squeezed orange juice in NH? Wow what a treat! They use goat cheese made in town by a local woman who raises her own herd! This place is worth every cent they charge for their food. read more

The Hancock Inn in Hancock, New Hampshire is the perfect place for truly absorbing the quintessential New England inn atmosphere. Personal hospitality, cozy fireplaces, fantastic homemade breakfasts-this 1789 Inn is highly recommended! Our room, the Rufus Porter room, was delightful with a fireplace and the original hand-painted wall murals. What gave the Inn its most special appeal was the General Manager, Duncan. He was everything one would hope for in a unique Old New England Inn. My husband and I thank Duncan and his wife, Sara, for making our 45th anniversary a wonderful get-away. Really bad Christmas eve dinner, I can't believe we were charged money for such a bad experience. We had been in before for the tasting menu and had the same high expectations but it wasn't until the end of the meal we found out the chef had changed. Food was cold and bland, service was completely absent, asked for drink refills repeatedly to no avail and whatever they did to change the dining room now felt like an old hoarders house you'd expect to find on the side of the road, creepy nutcrackers everywhere and pictures where you expect the eyes to follow you around the room. read more

The original plans needed to be tabled until next year but they decided that love would get them through & they would have the ceremony this year with their immediate families present, followed by a celebratory dinner. The Hancock Inn was at the heart of the planning & the owner, Marcia, & her manager, Rhonda, were willing to do anything they could to make sure everyone was comfortable, enjoying themselves and also making sure this wedding went as smooth as possible. The Hancock Inn has a beautiful yard with a rock garden complete with a little waterfall flowing into a koi pond, a perfect backdrop for the wedding arbor! The accommodations at the Inn are charmingly comfortable & the entire dinner & breakfast the next morning was outstanding! We might have entered as strangers but the hospitality they showed to us was genuine & made us feel like family! I'm sorry to say that our meal at the Fox Tavern last night just wasn't good enough. The food was ok...good burger, fish and chips were ok. The menu was extraordinary in how boring it was, but my biggest issue is that the service was beyond slow. The waitress was attentive, and seemed interested in getting our meals out to us, but the kitchen just couldn't have been slower. We arrived 5 minutes early for a 6:15 reservation, and didn't get out of there until 8 PM. None of us had appetizers or dessert, so we are talking about a one course meal. We just waited and waited and waited for our food. Luckily, we had no where else to be, and it was pleasant enough to sit and chat, but this meal should not have taken that long. We have been coming to the Hancock Inn for about 18 years, and have seen many different managers/owners/chefs. This is probably the worst it's been. read more

It seems odd that there aren't more reviews considering how packed the tavern was both times we were there. My family was staying nearby visiting with my father in-law. We decided to check out the Hancock Inn for dinner on Saturday evening. We arrived around 7:30PM to find that they were full for that night and wouldn't be able to seat us. We made a reservation for the next night (Sunday) when they do a "one pot supper". Now, to call what they do every Sunday evening a one pot supper is to sell what they're offering very, VERY short! There are no menus on Sunday and no choices to be made. It's like going to your grandma's house for Sunday dinner. You're going to eat whatever she puts on the table, case closed. However, you also know that it's going to be wonderful, no matter what it is. This particular Sunday dinner consisted of a large portion of very tender and juicy slow roasted loin of pork, oven roasted Brussels sprouts, a wedge of potato galette, and a fabulous dried fruit chutney. Every item on the plate was spot on and although I'm not generally a fan of Brussels sprouts (nor a fan of eating a big restaurant portion of anything) I left the plate totally empty. I enjoyed the combination of the pork loin and each of the complements very much. Dessert was a piece of gingerbread cake with some wonderful vanilla ice cream that must have been local if not homemade. This innkeepers were wonderful hosts and we couldn't have asked for a better evening! We'll be returning for sure! read more

An old country style interior theme, with a grandeos enterior in the heart of downtown Hancock, seemingly always easy to find parking even when they are completely full. The Cheese platter is divine, a real fine dining treat that is fresh and close to home. The fried olives are really good, i know it is hard to believe but they are incredible with great flavor, not great heated up however. I wasn't a fan of the bloody mary, they do with a Sherry i believe and the flavor is really off for me. Their hot and dirty however is very good so they have some drinks they have mastered and some that are a work in progress. The main course menu makes it almost impossible to pick something. The pot roast is by far the best i have ever had, from what we understand people come from across the country to try their Pot Roast. All the entrees on the menu were with ingredients from local area farms and you can really tell in the taste(s) of what they serve. Jessica was our waitress and she was as good a waitress we have ever had, providing keen insight and recommendations throughout the night that made out meal and experience one we will never forget. read more

Stayed here for my brothers wedding last weekend and I can not say enough about how warm and accommodating the whole staff was. The inn is absolutely charming, the rooms were as small and quaint as you would expect them to be, but our comfort was certainly not sacrificed. We stayed in the Franklin Pierce room- the bed was comfortable the,view was lovely, and the electric heater knocked the chill off of the nasty New England weekend. The very best thing about this inn was the breakfast! Everything is made from scratch and was simple and absolutely delicious. I had the tomato stacker with a poached egg and fresh English muffin with a side of home made corned beef hash that I fell in love with. We had dinner at the Hancock Inn last night. I love their fish and chips! Three good-sized pieces of fish prepared in a crispy, non-greasy batter, with a lightly herbed mayo for dipping and crunchy homemade french fries--absolutely delicious every time! My partner had the Mussels--they were amazing--steamed to perfection and bathed in a buttery sauce, with fresh herbs from the garden--sage, mint...wow!! Except for the noise level in the dining room, which can be rather elevated, we have always enjoyed dining at this lovely inn. The wait staff is attentive and knowledgeable. read more

Rooms are so unique, cozy and quaint. The perfect New England Inn with a lot of history. We've stayed in 3 rooms so far and each one has its own charm. The owners and staff are so accommodating and extremely pleasant. The breakfast that is included with your stay is always phenomenal. We've had dinner a couple times and also delicious. We recently got married in Peterborough and stayed here for two nights in the Hancock suite and it was the perfect setting for our special day/weekend. We will definitely stay here again and again. I grew up in Hancock and my first job was that of a bus person at the Hancock Inn many years ago. I often travel back to see my family and enjoy my visits to the Hancock Inn. The rooms are beautiful and fresh, and I have always found the food to be quite delicious. There is breakfast included in your stay, and my boyfriend and I always meet up with my mom for a nice breakfast. Perhaps it's just my style, but if I really disliked a meal or experience I would always take the time to speak to the business owner to express my feelings. It seems terribly easy these days to go online and say how awful you think something is,without having the decency to have a simple conversation. I couldn't help to look through someone's profile below to see their other reviews and.....all were one star. All I could think was: she can't have grown up in my sweet little town, no one is THAT unhappy and nothing is that bad. Very similar experience to what a reviewer said a year ago. The service is beyond slow. We should have known when it took too long to even get water and a drink order. The food took a good hour to come out and was the greasiest fish and chips I've ever had. The Cole slaw was very small in a condiment cup size container and it was warm. Their take on tarter sauce is awful. They blamed the computer. The waitress apologized as said she hoped we would come back and gave us free dessert to go which was just ok. read more

A New England fund raiser for the museum found us with a stop at The Hancock Inn, a cozy little bed and breakfast that turned into a real experience unlike any we've ever had for sleeping accommodations. We were warmly greeted by "Duncan" - an older fellow with a rich South African accent who made us feel like we were sleepover guests at his own home. His lovely wife gave us warm smiles and attention as we learned this B+B has been here since 1789! The decor is authentic, clean, cozy and made us not want to leave after 2 days. A huge backyard with lily ponds, a cricket field and a friendly grounds keeper trimming flowers added to the ambiance. There are hammocks to lounge in. The food is another story - home cooked breakfast included amazing chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes, poached eggs over sautéed vegetables and perfectly prepared bacon and sausage. Duncan greeted us for breakfast and came around regularly to fill our coffee and chat with us about life. A large old golden retriever walked around and up to each and every table to say "hello." What's most fascinating is that Duncan, only 2 years earlier, learned that he was an American citizen, his father an American World War 2 soldier. Fascinating story! For dinner the cheeseburger and the shrimp with pasta and Alfredo sauce were winners. The rich New England history is evident at The Hancock and we recommend it highly! read more

This restaurant, The Fox Tavern at the Hancock Inn, ROCKS. Been living in a town 30 minutes from Hancock for just over two years now and have been wanting to try this place. Valentines Day (well, post Valentines Day, actually since it is February 17th) was the day we decided to have our own Valentines Day celebration. Arrived for the 6 pm seating. The owner, Jarvis, greeted us warmly and escorted us to the seats in the dining room. The dining room and adjacent rooms were all warmly lit, comfortable and deliciously old, as you would expect in the oldest continuously working Inn in New Hampshire. Our server, Heidi, was prompt, courteous, attentive and yet unobtrusive. For cocktails they have nice and numerous American mix of cocktails. I highly recommend the Vesper Martini (shaken, not stirred, of course). Bravo to the bartender who really did it well. They still had the Valentines Day Prix Fixe menu working until the end of this nights service or you could order from the regular menu, which is what we both chose to order from. The charred octopus with beet puree, winter citrus and pickled shallots starter was wonderful! Next came the salad. We both chose the caramelized pear with Vermont burrata, pomegranate, crispy prosciutto, and frisee. Wow the flavors were terrific and melded together seamlessly. For my main I had the lamb Bolgnese with fresh pasta which was also one of the best meals I have had. My wife had the Beef Filet which she enjoyed. It was nicely finished at medium rare. Dessert was a sampler plate which we shared, and consisted of shortbread cookies, a small Creme Brulee, a death by chocolate brownie with a small scoop of raspberry sorbet, and two delicious chocolate truffles. Without a doubt one of the best meals I have had outside of New York and certainly the best since being back in New Hampshire after 35 years in NYC. The surprising synergy in the mix of flavors in every dish was exceptional. I highly recommend dinner at this establishment. I really want to go back for the Proprietors Sunday meal! This review is only about the Fox Tavern - we did not stay overnight at the Inn. Just got home from Mother's Day brunch at the Fox Tavern in the Hancock Inn. I can't believe how bad it was. We ate dinner at the Hancock Inn once before and it was a good meal. The waitstaff was really slow but we thought that maybe we caught them on a bad night. So, since they were offering a Mother's Day brunch that wasn't a buffet, we decided to go there (I always avoid buffets like the plague (and because of the plague) especially on Mother's Day when all the kids have their little grubbies in everything). My first hesitation was that they didn't publish a menu in advance. I knew, from having eaten there before, that their menu isn't extensive and is seafood heavy. So we were certain we would find something to eat (neither of us like seafood). When we arrived at our reservation time, we were greeted by the owner. She told us the menus weren't ready yet. Second hesitation: Disorganization. As she showed us to our table, she stopped to talk to other seated patrons. So, we just stood there waiting for her to finish. When she finished, she sat us. A few minutes later, a waitress came to get our drink order. Then another waitress brought us menus. Well, it was a slip of paper with a few dishes printed on it. There were 5 or 6 "starters" and 5 or 6 "mains". Only a few items weren't seafood. And nothing on the extremely limited menu appealed to either of us. A few of the dishes featured a duck egg. I wondered what is so special about a duck egg that prompted them to feature it on the menu. The eggs weren't integral to the dishes. The answer is it's pretentious and trendy. The last time we were there we got a cheese plate that was really good (pretty expensive and definitely not worth the price) but pretty good. We asked the waitress if we could get that again and she said we couldn't. My wife and I looked at each other and asked if we should just leave. But we decided to stay and give it a try. After a long wait, the waitress came back to take our order. My wife got the Oat and Almond Pancakes that came with sliced nectarines ($13). I ordered the Yankee Pot Roast ($24). After another long wait the waitress brought our food. I thought someone was playing a prank on us. On my wife's little saucer were 3 small (6 inch) pancakes with only a few of the tiniest slivers of nectarine. And my plate had a small pile of roast beef with a dollop of mashed potatoes so small that I thought they were kidding (think 2 big bites). Between the potatoes and beef, were 2 asparagus spears. On the bottom of the plate was a clear liquid sloshing around that was eroding the bottom of the mashed potatoes as it sloshed (because the potatoes were sitting in it). The asparagus was mushy (over cooked) - someone doesn't know how to cook asparagus. The pot roast was crock-potted to death - over cooked and so bland. Someone doesn't know how to cook Pot Roast. The sloshing liquid was the unseasoned water that they used to ruin the pot roast with in the crock pot. My wife's pancakes were cold. The syrup was cold. The butter they brought was hard. The pancakes were also poorly prepared - kinda dry and heavy. Someone doesn't know how to cook pancakes. Actually, someone doesn't know how to cook. We couldn't wait to leave the place and I doubt that we'll return - too many good places to eat around here. When we left, neither the waitress nor the owner (who said goodbye to us as we walked out) asked us how we liked our meals. I think the Fox Tavern is pretentious and overpriced. They have poor customer service skills and they need to hire someone who can cook. The atmosphere of the place misses the mark - they are going for old New England Inn style tavern and it only looks like an imitation of that. They need to go to the Colonial Inn in Concord, MA to see how to get it right. read more

I've been here a number of times, and everything has been divine- and not just "I'm not near a major city so it's tasty but not the best" divine, but "some of the best food I've had in my life" divine. I've been there with my husband twice recently, on New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day. Both times have been great! The new owners are so welcoming and kind, and even remembered us. The roaring fire in the bar area, the old fashioned games, and the decorations are all charming. The food is delicious, and the service is pretty good. The owner recommended a great red wine that went perfectly with my meal, it was a nice touch. We're visiting the oldest bars in each state & the Hancock is New Hampshire's. It's a beautiful old building and the staff was so nice, so we decided to book a room. We had the Squire room, with twin beds which were so comfy I didn't get up for breakfast. The room also had a Roman tub, which is shorter and deeper than a regular tub....I'm 6' tall and found it to be perfect for my bad back. There were cozy sitting rooms on each floor and coffee & tea available 24/7. We happened to get there for Sunday Supper, which is a fixed menu at a low price. Everything was so good! Great selection of drinks, but no beer on tap. You'll be greeted at the door by a friendly little blonde guy named Potter. He likes getting his ears scritched while he leans against you. Scratch the base of his tail and he'll happily follow you around the lobby. You can't take him to your room, though. read more

We were in the area least night - as a last minute outing, and were able to dine at the Inn without a reservation. Interesting ambiance, in good condition. We had the lobster bisque, my husband had the rack of lamb and I chose the creamy scallops. Everything was cooked to perfection, the wine was great, service also very nice. We found the room a little noisier than expected, but it may have been the combination of people at that particular time. It's definitely worth it and we recommend the trip to Hancock. read more

My sister and I just stayed at the Hancock Inn for 2 nights. Marcia and Jarvis couldn't be nicer - the restaurant is delicious, the wine list is great, the rooms are well appointed and the price point is excellent. You cannot beat the value. As an added bonus, Potter the golden greets you at the door with a wagging tail ready to be pet :) I stayed in the Squire Patten Room the first night (my sister and I had made the decision last minute to head up there and due to availability, had to share a bed one night). The bed was really comfortable! We stayed in the Moses Eaton room the second night. Yes, the beds are creaky but I was too tired from all the outdoor activity in the area for it to interfere w sleep. I adore historic properties and Hancock Inn doesn't disappoint. Wide pine original floors from 200+ years ago, a great sense of history. The town is tiny but there's lots to set out and do in the area: apple picking, hiking, swimming, EMS headquarters has great sales and you can rent paddle boards, bikes, kayaks, skis and more. Visit nearby Peterborough for some shopping (and Ava Marie's! www.avamariechocolates.com/) Don't let the small town image fool you, there are some really great restaurants in the area and lots to do. End of May - early Oct don't miss the Farmer's Market every Saturday 9am - 12pm right next door to the Inn. You never know what you'll find there on any given day. This was our second time and it did not disappoint! We had a great time just like the last time. This is a B&B and believe me you have to take full advantage of the Breakfast! The owners and the staff are warm and knowledgeable about the attractions of the area. They put on a fantastic Dinner and the Pot Roast was out of this world.
