I was gifted a massage here today so it was my first time visiting this particular establishment. The place appeared clean/well maintained and the staff was very friendly. My issue is I was supposed to receive a 1 hour Swedish massage, an added on scalp massage, AND an added on face massage. They got me in a few minutes late after my appointment time which I didn't mind at all but when all said and done from start to finish, my total massage time with the additional services was only a total of 45 minutes!! :( Getting cheated on time during a massage was VERY DISAPPOINTING. I wanted to say something right then but decided not to make a stink of it. I still tipped the gal but not nearly as well as I normally do. That said, I don't see myself coming back to this location anytime soon if ever. Also to be noted.. Though the masseuse was very friendly, it seemed like she had just gotten out of training or hasn't been doing this very long. Overall this was my least favorite massage to date. read more

I came here for both an Introductory Classic Facial and an Introductory Swedish Massage and so far my experience has been great overall. I ended up getting a membership where I can either choose a classic facial or Swedish massage every month for the intro price. The front desk staff are friendly upon check-in and offered water while waiting. The waiting room appeared clean and had a relaxing touch to it. I haven't had a facial in 10+ years so I wanted to try it out again. My esthetician was amazing as she took care of me for the full hour. The products felt smooth and cool when she applied each of them onto my face and they smell really good too. I also have to mention that the table was super warm and comfortable. Massages are usually a hit or miss for me but the Swedish massage I had here was worth trying. My masseuse did a good job with the pressure I wanted and checked on me occasionally. However, the calming music turned off at the beginning of the massage which took away from the relaxation experience. But I'd have to say again that the nice warm table made up for it. He didn't apply hot towels during the massage but it was provided at the end. Overall, it was a satisfying full body massage. I hope my future monthly visits will continue to be as good as these! read more

Instead of the massage being a complete hour, it was cut short to do the add one. One hour total. So not worth the price and will never come here again read more

Today I got a massage at Hand & Stone By Lee and she was absolutely amazing! Probably one of the best massages I have ever received. Not only was she super professional ,but she was relaxing ,and informative on how to keep up the hard work she did to relax ,and breakdown the built up tension in my back. i felt extremely comfortable and relaxed with her! It's really hard for me to relax and unwind when going to someone new and somewhere new. She had a warm and nurturing nature. Im extremely blown away from the service I received as a whole from this session and look forward to going back to her again! I will also refer friends and family when they're in the need of relaxation and a massage. I can see why she was employee of the month. I could not let today go by without commending and recognizing her superior service and care. I would also like to acknowledge Sam the esthetician who did my amazing facial! Sadly, my massage was one of the worst massages Ive had in a long time. My CMT's energy felt like she was bored and her massage technique was lackluster. I first came to Hand and Stone after my best friends got me a prenatal massage for my birthday. I had been to franchised massage spas like Massage Envy enough to know that the service can be very hit or miss, but my experience at Hand and Stone was wonderful. The massage therapists I've been to are extremely skilled in their technique, and both had me leaving feeling like I got my money and time's worth. Getting a massage is one of my very rare and seldom moments of alone time from my family, so it's important to me that the time is well spent. I've had the pleasure of having Toneka and Sean both work on my body, and I absolutely loved their technique. I ended up signing up for a membership at first, but due to a shift in my budget, I had to bow out. If money weren't an issue, however, I would definitely have stayed with the membership. One thing I would change is the 50 minute massage; instead of 50, I would push it to the full hour. As of June 2021, Hand and Stone policy states that vaccinated guests may remove their masks during services. However, we all know the pandemic is not quite over yet, so I'd highly recommend wearing your mask. The staff are extremely cognizant about hygiene; washing hands before and after services, and a temp check and COVID screening done before every service, which I truly appreciate and find to be a vital step during these times. read more

Paid for one hour and got 40 minutes or possibly less. According to H&S, their fine print says that when you pay for a one hour massage, you actually get 50 minutes hands-on, with 5 min at the start and 5 minutes at the end to get dressed. Well, they made me wait for 15 minutes, took a long time to get set up, THEN had me undress, did a very short massage, and ended right on time. I even arrived 5 min early for my appt. I also kept asking for more pressure and the masseuse would increase it for a bit, then go back to light rubbing. I specifically asked for sciatica relief, and she spent most of her time on my upper back. This was a prenatal massage, so it wasn't cheap either. The lady who did my facial was gentle, knowledgeable and explained all the products she used on my face to including the benefits of each product. The lady who did my massage was nice, but Very firm. I booked a sports massage, specifically for 30. Massage-ist started late, then I had to wait 4-5 minutes while she went to the bathroom while I took 30 seconds to change and get on the table. The massage was decent. However, the front desk tried to charge me for a full hour, which the session was not anywhere near. I told the front desk I had specifically booked 30 minutes with Patrick on the phone Friday. The response? Oh, he's at the call center as if that's supposed to mean something to me. Upshot: They charged me the fee for a 30 minute session, but then backed that out and attempted to charge me (instead of $85 for 30 minutes, or $170 for 60 minute $189.95 for about 40 minutes of massage. I have of course instructed by credit card company that this is a fraudulent charge. Which of course also means the card was cancelled and I have to await a new card. Bad! Hand & Stone.. After seeing a 50% off offer on facebook I logged into their website and booked an appointment for a classic facial. The advertised introductory rate is $89.95. The 50% off offer did not make clear what price point the 50% was to be based on so I assumed $89.95. When someone from staff reached out about the appointment I said I wanted to take advantage of the "half price facial" and specifically noted a $45 price point. No one corrected me so that was the expectation. At checkout I was presented with the $89.95 rate and, of course, was surprised. What is not clear is that the 50% offer from facebook and the "introductory rate" on their website is THE SAME THING - 50% off their regular rate of $159.95, or $89.95. It is not 50% off their introductory rate: 50% of $89.95, or $44.97. The facebook offer should have be more clear about the price. It did not mention any numbers or prices and left open to interpretation what "half price" meant. Also, I was not corrected when I mentioned the "$45 special". The manager called me and we were able to come to an agreeable resolution; she was extremely polite and professional about the misunderstanding. I will also say the person at the desk who originally presented me with the "surprise" amount handled herself professionally as well. In addition, and perhaps most important, I DID have a great treatment with Stephanie, who was a delightful aesthetician and gave me a very positive experience. She used immediately recognizable high quality dermalogica products and shared terrific referrals for other goods and services I was interested in. I think these are good people and a well-run business but the offer was not clear. It happens. That they worked with me to make it right speaks volumes about their integrity and their interest in retaining me as a future customer. RUN! Do not walk from this establishment and their really unprofessional "monthly membership." I am not saying that the massages are bad; some have been quite nice while others were among the worst I've received in my life. What distinguishes this place is the highly questionable practices related to cancelling your membership and then trying to apply unused credits to future massages. I tried to quit on several occasions: once, they froze my account, then reactivated it without my knowledge and I only found out that it was reactivated when I started getting charges on my credit card. This time, I physically went into the spa in Alameda but was unable to cancel at the time because the manager wasn't there and staff was not authorized to do so. I had to wait for the manager to call me back. She didn't, so I called "customer service," which is handled off-shore. I was notified that I had but 90 days to use my 10 unused credit. That's one massage about every week. The manager eventually spoke to me when I called customer service and said that I needed to speak to the front desk because I left something at the location. While I am now officially not a member, it will be one heck of a time in the next 90 days trying to use up my "credits." Businesses do not have to run this way if their prices are market-based and they have a good product. I have learned my lesson on these "memberships." Never again. read more

I have had delightful experiences here. Front desk staff are courteous, helpful, professional, and go the extra mile to be friendly. The massage therapist and aestheticians are great too! I'm already a member at a location in another state, but this location has earned me as a loyal guest. If ratings allowed for half stars, I would have dropped one because: 1) the first aesthetician I visit for microderm was lovely but didn't do my neck. My regular aesthetician in the previous state I lived in did so that my face and neck matched; I appreciated that, but thought maybe it was just her going the extra mile. However, the aesthetician today did extend microderm down to my neck, so she will be my regular now. 2) I asked about staff vaccinations. One of the people said it was a HIPPA violation to ask. It is not. HIPPA only applies to healthcare professionals. So a healthcare professional cannot reveal your vaccination status to someone without your consent, but anyone - including your employer - can ask. You can choose not to disclose (and people can respond how they want to that non disclosure). But I excuse that because I know the messaging on that isn't clear to the public and anti-vaxxers are spreading that misinformation. But FYI for everyone else. I opted to have everyone keep their masks on. I appreciate that they allow you to designate that at the beginning of your visit and communicate it to the staff versus you having to reiterate or renegotiate with everyone. It would be ideal if you could select service from vaccinated staff only, but I realize their may be legitimate access barriers to folks getting vaccinated and I would hate for them to be penalized for that (especially with wealthy White suburbanites coming into lower income and predominately Black/Latino areas to skip the priority based lines and steal vaccines in the early days. Asar was my masseuse and he was wonderful...very friendly, approachable, and discussed issues you may have and pressure level. He's very professional and mindful of modesty...first, he worked on me facedown and that was wonderful and put me in a relaxed stated right away....as this was my first visit (introductory rate of $70) it was more of an overall "relaxation" type of body massage (scalp, face extra) vs focusing on my troubled areas of shoulder, neck, headache which i noted on my form but all good...very knowledgeable of area that need to be worked on next time and ill have him focus on those areas. After massage, you're given a warm towel to wipe off some of the massage oils and you leave with spa face and hair (not a nice look) but eh, who cares if you're relaxed?! Overall, a great place but minus a star minus initial appointment booking...initially it was for 2 facials but told a couple days before there was only 1 esthetician...then had to coordinate time change, etc and was fortunately, our schedules were flexible enough to book a massage instead. Pricing is more expensive if you just come occasionally but if you book monthly its at a discounted rate which is a good deal if (like me) you like pampering and spa whore...I'll definitely have to consider the"membership" as its for either facials or massages and since i already have a good masseuse will have to try their facial treatments read more

I can't even rate this place. I had a membership at the shop in San Rafael. It was closed without any notice, my account was transferred to alameda 40 minutes from where I live without any notice. I canceled my membership and asked for a refund of the of the credit I had on file. I got no response. Then they proceeded to charge me for another month. I have called several times sent several emails played phone tag with Brianna in the alameda shop. She said she will not refund my mommy until she talks to me. Plus the girls that answer the phone there are rude. I sent emails to corporate office and have gotten nothing. They still have not refunded my 200.00 not sure what to do at this point. I called to cancel my appointment and was told I'd have to wait several days for the manager to call me. She finally called me several days later and told me I needed to sign a form and send it back. To sign the form, I had to agree to be charged one more month of service. I emailed asking to dispute this and got zero response. I finally gave up and sent the form back and of course they responded saying they received it but didn't acknowledge my previous emails. I finally got them to cancel my membership which they will sell you hard on upon your first visit. Theres a 30 day cancelation policy so they will charge you an extra month even when you decide to cancel and you have to submit paperwork via email which takes days/weeks for a response. Ironically signing up for a membership at the front desk is quick. I decided to cancel because every single massage I got from this place was mediocre. I started with regular massages then prentals. I was going to cancel before I got pregnant but figured maybe I should keep it in case I want prenatal massages. Well before I got pregnant the massages were laughable and it felt like someone just slathering oil on you with no pressure. I tried to book someone different every time. I even told one masseuse I suffer from migraines and she spent 30 minutes hitting a gong next to my ear, really? Mind you these massages are really 40 minute massages not 60 minute. They spend 5 minutes to come get you, 5 minutes for you to change, 5 minutes for you to talk about your needs and then 5 minutes for you to wrap up. They also pressure you to tip a lot. Today was my final straw when I went in for my final prenatal when my masseuse didn't follow the protocol of wearing a mask. She got caught when I suddenly sat up asking for water when I was dying from wearing my mask. That's really inconsiderate since I am wearing mine to protect you right after the holidays, the least you can do is to protect me and my unborn child. Pregnant women are immunocompromised. Also just like my non prenatal massages, like rubbing oil on you with no pressure. Oh and she mentioned she was trying to remember how to give prenatal massages. What do you mean? Better dig deep in your brain cause you need to do it right otherwise you can cause a woman to go in early labor. And at the end where they try to schmooze you for the tips is quite disgusting. Instead of expecting tips, why not do a good job? I tipped 25% anyway because of the front desk pressure but they don't deserve it. Don't come here for prenatals, go find a legitimate prenatal chiropractor that has specialized prenatal masseuse. What a joke. read more

Good massages, but frequent last minute cancellations. Today, for example, they cancelled one of our appointments when we were already almost there. They have a 24 hour cancellation policy if we would have cancelled, but if the location cancels we get nothing and have to find another date & time that works for them.
