I had a gift cd I had never used, so I tried their services. I was so impressed by my massage, that I signed up for the membership package and my credit card was charged each month. I waited until the charges had gone through and then tried to book an appointment with the same masseuse, only to find out she no longer gave the type of massage I wanted. I tried someone else but was not impressed. I then made an appointment for a facial. I enjoyed it so I tried to make another one with the same person and was told she had left. I then tried to make an appointment for a massage. After trying numerous different days and times, I finally found an appointment that would work for my schedule. A few days before the appointment, they called to cancel because the masseuse had to change the appointment. I booked another appointment. A few days before, I received another call to cancel that appointment because they were having meetings that day. I booked another appointment. I became very ill and instead of keeping the appointment and infecting everyone, I canceled. Unfortunately, I was leaving for an extended stay out of state and could not book another appointment and I informed the receptionist of that fact. I just called today to start up again and was told my credits had expired. I had 5 more massages or facials that I never used!!! It amounted to over $400 worth of services. When I told the receptionist that they had canceled appointments and I had an issue with rebooking, she nonchalantly responded they were expired. The whole membership system feels like a scam. I spent months paying for something I couldn't even enjoy. The receptionist was utterly uninterested in resolving the issue, and all I got was a generic, dismissive response. OH, and they keep sending me emails at least 3x a week to make an appointment!!! Why are you still sending me emails if I can't make appointments? So I can spend more $$$!!! This is NOT how a reputable business should operate. If you're considering a membership here, beware - you might be stuck paying for credits you can never use. On 10/19/2024 I visited this location for my monthly massage, up until this visit the service at the front desk has been great. On this day I needed to speak to Leslie, the location manager about transfers my husband's package to my account. I have done this action many times in the past. Unfortunately, at this time I was informed that cooperate is now enforcing the companies policy. Which I understand but because of my ongoing membership and their failure to enforce the companies policy I should have been handled with a little more care. Instead Lesile did not offer any solutions being that my husband needs to cancel his membership and has four packages left. She informed me that he would have 90 days to use his packages, or they would be lost. I commented that it would be wasted, and she commented it would be my husband who wasted his money. She spoiled my massage with her negative condescending attitude and lack of customer care. I will no longer visit that location and maybe even cancel my membership all together. read more

Massage was wonderful... front desk was AWFUL. My 17 year old daughter booked a massage online (after calling the location and being told since she started online she needs to complete the booking online... whatever kind of system that is), inputting her gift card number into the notes section as directed by the employee as well as her credit card (because that is a requirement). This morning I bring her there for her appointment. She hands them the gift card and proceeds to spend several minutes filling in the digital intake forms before her masseuse comes to get her. When she exits from her (wonderful) massage, she is informed that she cannot, in fact, use the gift card at the location. Apparently it is a promotional card (clearly indicated on the front of the card) and can only be used where it was purchased (apparently the Wayne location). Despite being in possession of the gift card from the moment my daughter walked in, and having the gift card number on the account from when my daughter inputted it online, they didn't bother to check or inform her until right after she emerged from having her service. And they said there was nothing they could do because the system won't even allow them to redeem the card. One of the 3 unhelpful women standing at the desk actually commented, "well, you could have read the back of the card." They could have read the front of the card... or the gift card number inputted into the system. They didn't bother. The manager named Henna I believe (apparently one of the 3 there) said she "understands" but they are the busiest location in the area and sometimes they get so busy with "people throwing gift cards in their faces" that they don't get to check. So they don't have a competent protocol, and I have to pay for a service I believed was covered under a gift card. I used to be a member here myself and went very often. Never again. The massage was great, but the front desk protocol and the receptionists' demeanor and lack of care for customers or for their jobs ruins it. If they are in fact the busiest location in the area, they won't be for long if they keep this kind of customer service. read more

Update: changing from 3 to 2 stars because two days later the skin on my nose started peeling profusely. It's pictures in the closeup of my nose below. In this pic, you can also see the small amount of bruising that happened on the edge of my nose. I really wouldn't recommend coming here at this time. Okay, I can definitely see why this place has mixed reviews. I would say their service is okay-- but not worth the price point. First, it's more expensive than the other Hand and Stones in NJ. Another location charges $10 less across the board for the same services. I had a facial and it was okay. They really went in on my T-zone...I do wish they were not as harsh in that area as I have nose piercings and I had to keep asking the specialist not to push down on it as its metal and REALLY hurts if you press it into my skin...? I now have some yellowing on my skin around the piercings that I hope doesn't turn into a bruise. They put a clay mask on me and also put it on my eyebrows. I've never used a clay mask that said it was safe to put on your eyebrows/hair so that was weird. But they didn't wash it all off. In the picture, you can see how there was dried clay in my eyebrows. When I tried cleaning it off with water lots of my hairs came out which is probably why you're not supposed to put it there. Another woman who was there was upset with the front desk staff as it seemed like she transferred some of her benefits to her family members (who were there with her) but the staff was overcharging her as if she wasn't using the benefits. I first visited this Hand and Stone location as a gift from my boyfriend who had a membership. After he saw how much i loved it he gifted me with massages more. After 3 back to back months i decided that i would sign up myself for a monthly massage and it was by far the greatest decision i made. I usually come and see Luisa A and am so glad that she has certain late nights that accommodate with my work schedule. It is truly worth the $60 monthly fee and you can even buy gift cards at membership price to gift to others. You can even transfer your monthly package to someone else as well if you don't need yours that month...never the case for me so i am glad the gift cards are an option. Great location! read more

Amazing experience at Hand & Stone in Clifton. The front staff is professional, friendly, and welcoming. They helped me get an appointment here last minute and I was super stoked because I really needed it. I was massaged by Laura V and WOW, she is an angel with the hands of a goddess. I usually don't bother getting massages because I've tried so many places that don't listen to my specific needs and don't press as firm as I like; I'd always end up leaving unsatisfied. But I got lucky and Laura worked miracles on my back. I actually accidentally fell asleep 3-4 times and had to keep catching myself because the massage was that damn good. I have waited MONTHS to get a massage due to Covid-19. I called and spoke to the front desk about precautions that were being taken and scheduled an appointment. My poor review is not about the massage that I recieved, it is about the lack of social distancing that I experienced (checking in & put and waiting for appointment). I was very uncomfortable with the amount of people in the reception / waiting area. 3 employees just at the small check in desk and massusages coming in and out. Waiting for my appointment there was an additional 5 other people in the small waiting room. After my appointment, I had to wait to pay, with an additional 7 people in the small space, plus the 3 employeesat the front desk. I was also informed when I called that the lobby was cleaned at the top of every hour. I was in the lobby for two "cleaning times" and did not witness this ... Hand and Stone Massage is a chain, quick service spa that specializes in monthly subscription massage and facial services. I received a gift certificate and used it on a 50 minute massage. While it's located in a busy strip mall, the music and atmosphere in the lobby are relaxing and put your mind at ease. Due to the quick service nature of the experience, there is no locker room or changing area prior to your service. My massage was a pleasant, relaxing experience. My massage therapist checked in with me on several occasions to see if the pressure and temperature in the room were to my liking. The therapy room was dimly lit and had relaxing music playing. The only negative part of the experience was payment. I was given a poorly delivered pitch on joining the monthly subscription. I used spa finder gift cards to cover the cost, and because of using these gift cards, the first time service price changed from $69 to $109. While I understood their reasoning, it's a terribly unfair policy and should be very clearly articulated upon making the appointment. read more

My personal issue with Hand and Stone is not the massage/facial service, but mainly the company's policies. I just ended my year membership because for every single item there is an added fee. You want to give you overage packages to a family member, freeze/unfreeze a membership-cancel, combine a package = all adds to additional fees. Somehow H&S found a way to add a fee for all regardless of your tenure with the membership. You can tell that the front desk girls have been warned not to engage with customer that question the company policy. Additional quirks: If you are like most people and weekends are your free time to book something...you guessed it...very few appt at odd times available. The consultants don't get paid as much as the fee cost so the value really goes mainly to the corporation. I tried to like this location. Somehow, they've managed to screw up my last two visits. This location's organization and ability to give the client what they want is seriously lacking. I signed up to become a member (automatic charge of $60/month) after my first visit since they offered to take off another $30 off my 80 minute massage. Because I had no preference at the time as to the gender of my massage therapist, I was assigned a male. The massage was good though I felt as if he was rather cautious as to touch and massage certain parts of my body. No big deal, I can understand how he would want to make me feel as comfort as possible. Lesson learned, go with a female the next time. My second appointment was for a one-hour facial. I booked online and due to their limited selections, I choose to go with "facial" although what I really wanted was a microdermabrasion. After reading a couple of reviews and speaking to the front desk on the phone, I selected Kristen as my esthetician. Upon arriving to my appointment, I was disappointed to find out that I wouldn't be seeing the person I specifically booked with and instead was given someone else without advance notice or apologies. Then when I told my beautician that I was interested in a microdermabrasion, she didn't give me what I wanted and instead told me that a simple rejuvenation facial would help with my dry patches. Nope, as I suspected, it didn't help. My third and final appointment? An 80-minute massage and 30 minute facial. I was asked whether I had a gender preference. I said "Yes, a woman please." Did I get what I asked for? Of course not. I ended up getting the same exact guy that I had the first time. He recognized me and in the interest in not making it awkward, I just took the loss and vowed to never return to this place. As for my mini-facial, this time around I did get what I wanted: a mini microdermabrasion. My skin is now baby soft and dry patches gone. If only I had received this treatment my first time around ... maybe it would have saved them. It would have certainly saved me time and money. read more

I don't usually bother to give a one star, and I'm not the person to complain. This is just a warning to everyone else. We got a couples massage and it was good, and I have no problem with the workers, or the service. However, don't sign up with them to get the discount, and make sure you read the fine print. They will charge you an extra month when you cancel, even within the 30 day window. (Also, we canceled way before the 30 days were up). Therefore, don't sign up at all and pay the full amount that same day. This business policy is unacceptable, and it's a very sneaky way to do business. I hope they either review their business policies or they go out of business so another more ethical company can come take their place. read more

Please make sure that if you are there 1) Ask what is included in services for the price they are charging. 2) Do not become a member right away. If you decline the membership make sure they are not charging your credit card every month. 3) Even if you pay gratitude to the person providing you the service they will charge you the additional gratitude on your final bill, so make sure you do not pay additional or double gratitude. All these had happened to me. When I saw charges on my credit card I called them. I was told that I agreed to the membership which I had declined the first time they offered me. They did not take off the charges. They are not honest with service and charges. read more

This is the second time I believe I've spoken with this person. 1st time, she booked my apt in the system for a 50 minutes even though we discussed an 80 minute. I just received yes and no answers, no suggestions for other times and when we finished our conversation I said "Thank you" and she hung up; lack of common courtesy and manners. I stumbled across Hand & Stone in Clifton and they were able to fit me in the same day. I went to Sharon who offered so many helpful tips .I GOT A FACIAL & MICRODERM. She also suggested squeezing in some micro peels to get an even better , more even tone. After the first visit I saw a very noticeable difference. I'm looking forward to my next visit. Reading the reviews on here made me really nervous to try out Hand & Stone. I had received a giftcard, so no matter what I was going to come. On the day of my facial (a Saturday), there was about 6-10 people waiting in the lobby. I was shocked to see so many people waiting around for services, and thought for sure I would be waiting forever for my appointment. To my surprise, they took me on time! I was super nervous as I had never been for a facial before. My esthetician was Yocelyn. She was so nice and definitely helped to make me feel at ease. My skin was in bad shape before I got there, and I left feeling refreshed and already looking better! I went with the Detox facial to help ease my acne and redness. About a couple days later, my face broke out with 2-3 large cystic pimples. I think this may have been due to getting a detox facial, so I won't place the blame on Hand & Stone. I really can't wait to be back and I'm curious to see how my skin improves as time goes on. read more

Customer service Here is horrible. I have been a member for some time now and within a year I have had about 5 bad experiences because every-time I keep giving them another chance. I booked a 90 min massage as a gift to my mother and 30 min into the massage my mom had to ask the masseuse to stop because she seemed as if she didn't know what she was doing and she could already tell the service was going to be choppy. Now here's where it gets better... the manager only wants to compensate $20 for the entire massage that was only 30/90 min and costed a bit over $100 and expected that my mom would pay for the remaining balance of the services which is ridiculous. This location has screwed up so many times and each time I try to give them another chance and it just doesn't get better. The only therapist working there that keeps me going back is Luisa who unfortunately wasn't available to do my moms massage that day. read more

She was very professional, walked me through everything she was doing and I left with my face feeling refreshed. I truly had a glow and that feeling lasted for at least a week. I've been debating on giving this place a try for a long time now. I randomly decided to go for it after work one day and luckily they had an open appointment for a facial without too much wait time. First, the young ladies working were very polite and the place was incredibly clean and smelled amazing. My appointment was exactly on the time they gave me and my esthetician was Sharon who is amazing. Funny, incredibly informative and gentle as possible on my very pore clogged skin. I am definitely a fan and plan on going back. My skin looked fresh and felt soft and supple. Just as an FYI after my appointment they did try to up-sell me a membership or monthly package but I kindly said no thank you, and the girl at the desk didn't press me any further. I also decided to purchase some of the recommendations I received on skin care products. The Clarity rx line is a little pricey but having read some reviews previously, I went in wanting to try them. Also, as with most skin care products, a little goes a long way. I definitely plan on going back for another facial and am likely to also try a massage.
