Hangang is hands down our favorite Korean restaurant in Hawaii. I've been there multiple times, and every visit has been consistently excellent. I've brought friends visiting from the mainland, and they loved it too. My wife, who was born in Korea, really enjoys the food here--and even her mother, visiting from Korea, said it was delicious (which says a lot!). They make their own kimchi in-house, and it's outstanding--perfectly balanced and full of flavor. The assortment of banchan is impressive, with generous variety and freshness every time. Food items were prepared with intention and dedication to the craft. We tried their lunch sets that arrive with short ribs or chicken and choice of soup. Of course, the meal includes a labor-intensive array of side dishes (banchan) that would satisfy any palate. The soft tofu soup broth was delicate but flavorful! Bits of visually appealing seafood play a part of this soup as well. If not tofu soup, choose the ones prepared with miso or Kim chee. The short ribs were wonderfully seasoned and tender. We weren't sure where the parking was and since we couldn't find street parking, we ended up walking from Ala Moana. There are some stalls in the back of the restaurant however it can be limited due to the other eateries and shops. The restaurant is clean and has a modern vibe to it. Their lunch special comes with your choice of soup, protein, and comes with a healthy pot of rice. Soup choices include soft tofu soup, kimchee, and korean miso soup. As others have wrote, this is a good place for lunch. If you come with an appetite I recommend getting the lunch combo. It's a lot of food and you will most likely have leftovers. Your meal comes with a variety of banchan. I was impressed with the 10 banchan! I ordered the short ribs and kimchi soup. The short ribs was a good cut with very little fat. First and foremost, the service in my honest opinion lacked a lot. What you're mostly paying was the quality of the meat. We were ignored many times by workers - even when entering the store and it was not busy. Regardless we got one of the sets (Prix fixe menu) that costly roughly 70 dollars per person. The quality of the meat was good, and what you get from these sets is surprisingly more than what you'd expect. Everything within the set was really good, but was extremely disappointed with the 'Fruit dessert'. My friend and I thought it was perhaps some special fancy fruit dessert based not the prices .. This new Korean BBQ located near Bernini on Waimanu St. has a sleek minimalist modern look with its black geometric interior. The big rectangular steel smoke ducts are well integrated into the design and effective because we didn't leave smelling like Kalbi. The menu looked pricey when I Yelped it but there is a lunch menu with specials that are more affordable. Service was friendly but a bit slow (because they were short handed?) and laissez faire which worked in our favor because my girlfriend whom I hadn't seen in ages and I needed to catch up over a 2.5 hour lunch. In hindsight this was better than having an aggressively attentive waitress who makes you feel pressured to order and eat. The menu is pretty comprehensive with all the categories of noodle, rice, meat, stew and soup dishes one would expect to find at a good Korean restaurant as well as some I had not seen before like spicy sea snail salad. I got the lunch combo ($23.95) and chose bulgogi for my meat and soft tofu soup for my soup option. The beef was soft, well marinated and very tasty! It came with a wonderful pot of purple rice containing beans and chestnuts that was burnt just right on the bottom and a pot of tea to our into it at the end. My friend got the arrowroot spicy cold noodles with Kalbi ($26.95) which I got to sample. Noodles were thin with just the right texture paired with a delicious spicy sauce and cold soup to pour in. The banchan was excellent! We were served a variety of 10 different items served in little dishes, each very well prepared! 5 stars for the food! One of the best BBQs on Oahu for quality. A nice and unusual feature is the sink next to the door where you can wash your hands before and/ or after or even during your meal I suppose! It must be a familiar and comforting name. If you want to get bougie there are numerous higher quality beef cuts sliced to order for grilling, along with very good side dishes, some soups, mixed rice, and cold noodles. Lunchtime, there are combo meat and soup, or meat and cold noodle sets. This is the go-to choice for the price. and quality and quantity of food. The banchan stand out. No macaroni salad, blanched broccoli, or wilted head cabbage. There are several preparations of daikon - each one excellent. The kimchi has tasty fermented seafood saltiness, The braised sweetened red potato would be my favorite, except for the exceptional banchan of crunchy pale green stems from some unknown vegetable. This is nothing like Korean mother home-cooking. The spice and salt are toned down. The seasonings for the cooked grilled meat are modern. Oddly enough, the first thing I noticed when I walked in was a vanity sink left of the entrance. Moving on...there are parking spaces behind the building and metered street parking right out front. Luck was on our side as we pulled right into a metered parking right up front as the time changed to the free period. There is no where to wait inside so they have some Adirondack style chairs with cushions right outside the door. As soon as the rest of our party arrived, we checked in and were seated at a booth against the wall. The place is small, and I like that they have dividers up between the booths so it makes for good private-ish conversation. They have grilling sets and Ala carte meats, along with cooked dishes. I had to have the galbi jjim...or braised short rib. Surprisingly, it was listed as a soup, but did not really come as a soup. More like a sauce because the bowl was so shallow. Nonetheless, the meat was tender and sweet - so good! The servers help cook and cut the meat for you. Beware, remove the meat before it burns. There is a rack to remove it from direct heat but it still keeps cooking in the rack. The soondubujjigae was so good, I've never had it with seafood before! There was a nice clammy taste to it. I like that they give a wide variety of sides and that the salad has blueberries. The skirt steak was most excellent and so was the kalbi. I think the spicy pork could've been better...it wasn't that spicy. The potatoes in the galbi jjim were ridiculously large and didn't have much flavor in the middle; however, the carrots were very flavorful and sweet. Overall great experience. It was a good thing our party made a reservation because it was a full house. The inside of the place is really nice. It has a modern look to it and very clean! My boyfriend and I shared the combination set B which had 4 different cuts of meat. We also got the seafood pancake. Our other two friends ordered different menu items ala carte. He was nice and apologized about it but we didn't get to eat much of it since it came out so late. Service ended up being even more slow. It took a while for us to get our check. Before we got the check we asked them to split by couple. The lady who brought out the check said that she made a mistake and accidentally charged my boyfriend's card for the whole meal. Then she tried to fix it by splitting it half between the two cards given. It still wasn't quite what we wanted since each couple ordered different menu items. I felt bad because my boyfriend and I ordered more expensive items than our friends. The food was pretty good but it was so pricey. The combination B set that had the 4 cuts of meat was $95.95! When I asked her how she knew about it (because she's not a Yelper), she said she read a newspaper article about it. I read reviews and was leary about the price, but, then, I thought... for my friend's birthday, I'll go anywhere she wants. LOCATION: kind of kitty corner from Nordstrom on the corner of Piikoi Street and Waimanu Street. There used to be a karaoke bar (on the real corner of the block) next door called "Cheers". PARKING: there's a free parking lot behind the building. There are two narrow driveways before and after the building. Be careful and drive slowly. ENVIRONMENT: since this is a new restaurant, it's very clean with modern decor and black accents. There is a convenient restroom! SERVICE: I was going to give this place five stars, but I brought it down to four stars because of the service. I was early for our 11:00 a.m. reservation. The staff was very attentive because I was the only one there. Later on, our server disappeared. I asked for a takeout box three different times from different staff. Each time, I asked for our check, too. I think they finally realized that I was serious when I started to stand up in the aisle. It's disappointing because at the start, I gave my credit card to our server and told her that this is my friend's birthday - to kind of speed up the process and avoid arguing about who's going to pay. Wow, this place is really good Me and my boyfriend came in and really liked our server. She was shocked that he could speak Korean and was talking to us throughout our dinner. Initially, I thought it's one of those mom-and-pop Korean barbecue restaurants, since there are a bunch in the area. We tried the prime beef set that was $70 per person, and one of the items was Wagyu beef! We enjoyed the food; the quality of the meat was excellent, such as the skirt steak, the brisket and the wagyu filet, also the banchans, the salads, the kimchi pancake, and the special dipping sauces. The service was also pretty good. They were very polite and they helped us start the grill by putting some meats in for us. Maybe it's still new, the servers looked extremely busy and hectic and it took us some time to flag them down for stuff. Everything was good except for the value I'd say. I wasn't very excited for sirloin on the menu. I never have been a fan of this cut - it's almost always rough and tasteless. I just wish they give us more of the other cuts instead. The amount of meat was so little overall. Also there was only one skewer of vegetables in small pieces. I felt bad to have to split the 4 pieces of small bell peppers with my husband and had to cut the already halved mushroom into halves to share. Come on. Have been waiting for this place to open! Came for lunch around 1pm during the week and was seated immediately. The lunch deals are pretty good. I got the lunch special set ($24) and picked short rib and tofu stew. It also came with purple rice. The meat was a little fatty, but so so flavorful and the soup was also so good. My friend got the bibimbap ($17) and it also came with a soup. She enjoyed it as well. Both of the portion sizes were huge, especially the bibimbap- such a great deal. There was also of course all the banchan sides- these were so good and beautifully presented. They also gave us tea. The Kim chi was so flavorful, I was obsessed. The salad dressing was really good as well. They first give you sample size sauces to see which ones you really like and then if you like certain ones, they will give you more. So don't be shy ... you're paying for it after all. -- The soup - FLAVORFUL! I find that often times, Korean soups lack flavor at certain restaurants but this was all there. -- My favorite -- CHEESY STEAMED EGG. It was sooo fluffy, soft and everything I had hoped for and more. You HAVE to get it and dip it in the salt mixture they give. So good. Now, let's talk about the price and my only ick about this place. The price point is definitely for a special occasion, perhaps a "I'm going to treat myself" type of night. It was expensive. Like a tray of brisket (8 pieces?) was like $40 and the Steamed Egg that I loved so much was $15 for how tiny the portion was. Premium food, good service, high prices and an atmosphere that is clean but the decor and the space does not give off an "upscale vibe" .... this makes me wonder how this restaurant will do 1-2 years from now when the service fluctuates, the prices still stays the same and the atmosphere is very ordinary. Not to mention, we are literally in the middle of a second recession. They may have to reconfigure their pricing. Overall, I do recommend this place. Came here for the first time recently, ordered two of the $79 sets and a side of meat jun not expecting how big the meal would be. The meat was authentic and worth it for the price you pay. Wrap it in your vegetables, add some salt, and dip it in the sauce and you have the best flavor right there.
