I have been passing this place forever and I'm so glad I finally stopped. Came for lunch after drinking all morning and it was the perfect meal. The sandwiches are so full and hearty, and they have so many options you are bound to find some thing you will like. The staff was super patient and helpful while I was trying to figure out what to get for my first time. I would definitely say it's more of a grab and go set up. Despite knowing that ahead of time, I was still a bit surprised when I walked in to order. The place (I'm not sure whether to call it the liquor store or the sandwich shop) felt a bit dirty and had an unpleasant, dank smell. I quickly found the sandwich line opposite a row of whiskey bottles. We ordered and admired the posters of big-breasted women advertising beer while we waited. I'll be honest, I was pretty unsure if I wanted to eat this sandwich. I will say I was surprised! It was tasty and had lots of toppings! Was it the best sandwich I've ever had? Hangover Hoagies was a delightful surprise discovery.Wedged in along the west wall of the Sun Stop Liquor store on Apache Blvd in Tempe. This narrow strip of space is just big enough for the kitchen and three 2-person tables. Most of their business appears to be take out. These rudimentary looks belie the superior quality of their food. Their menu features a good variety of original spins on traditional, mostly carnivore, deli sandwiches. Keeping with their theme, sandwiches sport an equally original name relating to inebriation or the effects thereof. As it was my first visit, I started with their version of a basic Italian submarine sandwich: the "Italian Hangover." The meat was lean, tender, and very flavorful and the proportions of all the ingredients were just right. The staff was very friendly and accommodated my customization request. They delivered an outstanding sub sandwich leaving me wishing I had ordered the larger size. They offer a fountain sodas and a small collection of potato chips. However, they are located in a sizable liquor store, so there is actually a huge number of options for sides and beverages. It's hard to find a good deli sandwich. While Hangover Hoagies is not a full-fledged deli, it's sandwiches are very good and worth a visit. Getting the late night cravings is annoying, especially when there are limited spots that are open. One fateful night, I was craving sandwiches and saw Hangover Hoagies as an option nearby. I was hesitant at first but I'm glad I tried this place out! I ordered the Intoxicate Turkey Strami and it was delicious! I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and how fresh it was. And the service was just as great. The staff was so kind and welcoming -- another thing I didn't expect at a late night establishment. Solid subs that deliver fast and are pretty consistent. I'm from the east coast and their Italian is pretty decent compared to a NY style Italian hero. Their Mac salad is pretty good too. Bonus that they deliver late. ... The only gripe I have is I've ordered delivery from them recently and the Mac salad was warm and a little funky and they charged me an additional $.81 for a barely half filled tiny ramekin of honey mustard on the side...the sandwich was also mostly just soggy bread and little fillings. I have been consistently ordering food from here every weekend. We had it for the first time ever, like 2 weeks ago. I love the Italian hoagie and Meatball. It's the best. Recently I tried the Mouth watering fusion and it was perfect. For some reason I order the large sandwich and it was not as good as the 8in. Size definitely did not matter on this one. They are perfectly toasted and they always taste so good. They have not forgotten any items at all and they have not Had any issues on my end as far as my orders go. 10/10 I'm coming here for sandwiches. We plan our weekends around this place as well. My brothers Jon and Joel who have been living here for a year love this place and the owners. So I just got here and decided to see if it lives up to expectations. It's a hidden gem. Connected to a liquor store. The menu is witty and has double meaning drunk sandwich names, which is very clever. The owners and staff are super kind and welcoming, they treated me like family and love to talk about family, you feel like you have been friends for a while even if you just met. That special care and attention gives them a top notch customer service score on my end. I ordered the Italian hero. My wife ordered the hammered pastrami. The sandwich was amazing, the bread was soft and toasty and not super filling, a great blend of ingredients and a good amount of meat made this sandwich spectacular!!! I always go to places and order the Italian sandwiches to find the best ones. I have ate Italian sandwiches from at least 30 different places in my life and these guys definitely come in top 5. Wow, wow, WOW! You would not expect a sandwich shop attached to a liquor store to have such amazing sammiches (or I dunno... you might) but this place definitely does. And I'm not saying this from a drunken stupor, I'm stone cold sober and can promise you that these sandwiches are fresh, unique, and always tasty. The combos they put together aren't run-of-the-mill, the ingredients they use are quality and always at their peak. You can tell these folks know how to keep their ingredients at their freshest, and treat them with respect (judgmentally lookin' at you Subway... with your sad, flies buzzing around it, sad little bins of processed meat and half-wilted screaming-for-a-trashcan-death ingredients). I've tried many sandwiches from their menu over the past few years. My favorite sandoz are the plastered (turkey blt) and the the sober club. My man likes the "effed up" ruben, and the intoxicated turkey 'strami. Their italian is pretty dang satisfying too. Now lets talk about the bread. I love me some carbs and gluten, and I am quick to judge when it comes to the all-powerful foundation of a sandwich... its bread. I'm a big fan of wheat bread, but the white bread here at Hangover Hoagies really shines. It's soft and fluffy with the perfect bite, it stands up well to condiments without getting soggy after saturation, and without being dried up or crunchy to begin with. And it's important to note that I've only ever ordered delivery from HH, so these sammies and their bread stand up real well to travel. I'm not sure what kind of sorcery they have employed to achieve this feat, but it's best not to question this kind of thing (lest you anger the sandwich gods and be cursed with soggy buns for all eternity). If I could make any suggestion, and this is really more of a feeble plea, it would be that Hangover Hoagies please consider offering a roast beef and swiss "dip" with au jus... I'd be real interested to try whatever they come up with, because they have never disappointed me so far and a french dip is one of my favorites. Easy to miss but DON'T miss out! The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. The owner(?) gave us suggestions and everything was delicious! We had the Third DUI and the Effed Up Chicken. The Third DUI was a spin on an Italian with a delicious pesto. The Effed Up Chicken had a really tasty sweet & spicy mayo that made this sandwich stand out. The real show stopper was the hoagie bread. It was firm but so soft on the inside. We're in town for 5 days and are already planning to eat here again before we leave! The food world is so, so, so not fair. You've got all these mediocre chains occupying huge spaces on every corner. But the good stuff is tucked away into a narrow hallway of a liquor store. The tables are tiny. Boxes of cheap vodka are stacked around you. This might not appear to be the most inviting place. But it's 100% legit. I ordered the "Effed up Ruben" with corned beef, thousand island, bacon, tomatoes, and lettuce. It was better than it looked--and it looked great. At $7.99 for a 12" it felt like a steal, and I had some leftover. 36 hours and a zap in the microwave later, it was still better than corporate chain subs. Like, even the leftovers were good. And if you've got a hankering for something a bit lighter, they have a couple vegetarian items as well. Whatever you get, it's going to taste great with their amazing, perfectly toasty bread. Like many cool spots in Tempe, it's open hella late. Until 2am. So if you've got late night munchies, look no further. So so so so good. Nice workers and plandemic friendly. I wish they had other locations seeing as I went here on a trip to Az since it's a place my aunt raved highly about. It did not disappoint. The price for the 14 inch was slightly unreasonable to me but it was so filling and flavorful. Fresh ingredients too. Delicious sandwiches and open till almost 2AM on a Monday night? What else do you really need to say? Hangover Hoagies is a Tempe staple with a loyal following and there's a good reason for that. Service is always friendly and the food hits everytime. I personally recommend the Third DUI as I'm a pesto lover, but you probably can't go wrong with much. I love sandwiches. I found Hangover Hoagies on yelp and decided to try it based on reviews and photos. I ordered a veggie sub and all of the ingredients were crisp and FRESH. They even had sprouts. If you follow produce, many of the larger sub shops are no longer carrying them. The bread was soft and fluffy as well. We ordered online and the order was ready on time, with all extra items (cookies and chips) in the bag. I didn't go inside to get the order so I cant attest to the aesthetics of the place. But, for your reference, Hangover Hoagies is inside of a liquor store, so don't miss it looking for large signage. Peace. read more
