Hannaford is a great place for you're everyday needs. Great quality produce, the meats are fresh, and there is a lot of variety of other cuisines. My only complaint is that even though they claim that the seafood is fresh, I was told by the guy working there that it actually comes in frozen. The staff is really helpful. I remember that one time we were looking for some cilantro and the only ones out weren't that great looking. So I asked the guy if they had fresh ones inside. He took a couple of minutes and got us some fresh ones. Do expect to spend a little extra on things because the quality is good. I generally prefer Hannafords to the other Supermarket players in the area and this location is not there best, but its still superior to any other options in the area. This location has clearly been here a long time and suffers from the fact that the building and parking lot designs are not modern at all. There is a terrible bottleneck in the parking lot as its one way and about a car and a half wide. So people get all caught up trying to get one of the first 20 spaces and end up holding everyone else up when there are literally about 100 empty spaces down another 100 feet. The inside of the store is a little on the cramped and old side, but its still decent. They have a good selection of produce, a decent deli/butcher section and an average bakery section. The organic/health food section is pretty small although they carry all the selections that I like so I'm pretty happy. They are also the only store in the area that carries the tart cherry goji berry juice that I like and have such difficulty finding. I also like that they have now started carrying the brand of organic milk I like in gallon bottles at a price that is almost half that of Star Market. The rest of the store is pretty typical grocery store. The check out area is where this store can get crappy. They have what appears to be a lot of check outs, but the lines always get long. Also, cashiers tend not to be very friendly and almost always painfully slow. read more

We do most of our food shopping here for a few reasons. It's close to our house and while it's a little smaller than the nearby Shaws and Stop and Shops it tends to have everything we need. The Natural Foods section is quite good and has a lot of gluten free products at reasonable prices. The produce is consistently cheaper than Shaws and they usually have better looking veggies available, particularly in the summer. The sales don't tend to be as good as other stores, but you don't need one of those annoying keychain cards and regular prices are usually lower than regular prices at other stores. The one thing I really dislike about Hannaford is their deli department. They have Sara Lee and some other cheap-o national brands, but I miss the Boars Head or Dietz & Watson cold cuts you can get at other stores. read more

Meh. Good selection and all but this place REALLY needs a self check out. The lines can get ridiculously long. Also, as other people have mentioned you have to unload your cart/basket yourself... which isnt that bad but the first time I went here I was fully unaware of this and got a lot of attitude from the cashier for 'not being prepared'. Really?!?!? Its quite clean, and the organic section is nice, as well as the fact that they have some grains/candy/trail mix that you can buy loose. Great cheese selection and very efficient deli. Prices arent the best but certainly not bad. knocked off one star for not having self checkout lanes, and another one for the attitude over 'being unprepared' to unload my own groceries. If your going to make a blanket rule about something like that, you need to be prepared to politely explain it to new costumers. read more

Good old Hannaford's - you can't really go wrong. It's clean, has a good selection of organic produce and products, and it's open late. As others have mentioned, there's no card to get the lower prices. They also have been selling reusable grocery bags and give you a 5 cent bag credit for bringing your own :) They have this funny guiding star system which rates food.. I'm not quite sure on what, but at least they try! They also have a Red Box and Rug Doctors here which are convenient. read more

As far as conventional grocery stores go, this one is pretty decent. More expensive than a Market Basket, but cheaper than Shaw's or Stop & Shop. I wouldn't buy produce here (even outside of farmer's market/CSA season, why would anyone living within walking/biking/driving distance of Russo's buy their produce anywhere else?) but for things like cereal and juice and baking supplies, Hannaford's is our local go-to place. I do like that they sell Fage yoghurt (I'm addicted) but I don't get why they hide it over in the "organic/natural foods" section instead of with the regular yoghurt. I have an only-half-joking conspiracy theory that the other yoghurt companies pay them to do this. They also have my favourite peanut butter (Teddy's) so they get points for that. The parking lot is somewhat annoying and the store always seems pretty busy. Cashiers are nice though and the store is always pretty clean. read more

While I am able to really get 90% of all things that I need here, I'm simply not in love with this store. I want to be, I really do; however the poor location, just average produce quality, and general 'crammed' feeling leaves me longing for a marriage of Hannafords and Whole Foods (WF). Let's face it, it's tough to buy everything you need at WF. I love being able to buy my regular toilet bowl cleaner (WF calls it "evil") and produce at the some location. However when doing so, I'd like better quality produce and be able to casually stroll through wide, clean, and clutter free isles. I love this little store .... I don't get there often enough because it is out of my way I find their prices very reasonable ... much more so than the other nearby chains. They have a good variety of produce including a good selection of organics I actually find micro greens and broccoli sprouts which I was unable to find elsewhere...They carry a great selection of meat including grass fed beef and organic chicken .... What I usually go specifically for , however , is their shaved steak ... On occasion I treat my family to home made steak and cheese subs I have only found shaved steak at Hannaford' s and it makes a delicious sandwich ... So on to my next subject which is the real reason I'm here ....Big shout out and thank you to the guys in the meat department for coming to my rescue and defending my honor tonight .... After a long day at work I decided to go to Hannafords in Waltham to get some of that yummy steak I mentioned earlier I was kind of in a daze as I stood in line waiting to be helped .... Last time I was there I got the steak from the meat dept There was a bit of a line at the deli so I patiently waited my turn in the meat dept This guy appeared out of nowhere and starts conversing with the only employee who was visible in the meat dept ...Originally I was under the impression that he worked there as well I continued to wait while looking at my phone and minding my own business I finally realized this guy completely went around me walked up to the counter got the guys attention by speaking to him in Spanish , as a result I was stuck still waiting while this guy gets his order filled No problem , no wait !!! The line at the deli had finally cleared up ... I asked one of the guys working the deli if there was someone working in the meat dept ..I told him what happened , he immediately got someone to help me , he was super nice and polite waited on me immediately as I'm waiting for my steak the guy comes back .... I said did you not realize I was waiting in line ? He said too bad for you ... you were on your phone you didn't speak up ... you didn't speak to anyone you just stood there He starts raising his voice embarrassed the crap out of me !! The poor guy cutting my meat couldn't do so fast enough .... One word led to another I lost my cool a little and called him an A hole ... He in turn informed me that he has great respect for women , but had none for me because I wasn't even a woman , I asked him to please stop speaking to me and he would not quit My order was finally ready ... the meat cutter excused himself ... a few minutes later he handed me my package of shaved steak with s big sticker that said " ITS ON ME " he handed me the package gave me a hug and said this is for you I'm so sorry you were treated that way I just wanted to be sure that I said thank you for the good deed .... While I don't make this my weekly supermarket, Hannafords has some things that the others don't. 1. Great bulk health food/ nut selection. The kind in the bins where you can weigh out what you need. 2. Great Jelly Belly jelly bean canisters. You can get as much of each flavor as you want. I usually get 3/4th sizzlin' cinnamon and 1/4th tutti frutti. I've never seen this in any supermarket ever but it should be a staple, like bread. 3. Nice meat and fish selection. While I don't eat meat, I buy for my husband and their display cases and foods look a lot cleaner than Stop and Shop. Plus the meat guy will trim your meat and weigh out your hamburger meat. 4. The Hannaford brand frozen appetizers and frozen raviolis. I never buy these types of things anywhere else, but they look so good on the package and really are so good. I love their toasted raviolis and basil raviolis. Well done, Hannafords! read more

I love this Hannafords for the following reasons: Great organic section and options Small shopping carts which I love Always has the brands I want Inexpensive Decent variety of produce They know how to bag with reusable bags Convenient location, just minutes from my house Things I do not like: Often long lines at cashiers Small, crowded parking lot Precut fruit is never ripe/tasty I usually supplement my shopping here with a stop at Russo's, Wilson's, Whole Foods, or trader joes to get specialty items and better produce. If you are in the Waltham area, Hannaford is a reasonably priced supermarket with a good variety of products and services. The location is well kept and has fresh fruits, vegetables and meat. My major issue with Hannaford is that I was not impressed with the quality of the seafood and was told that it was frozen. New England is known for its fresh seafood, so why would a chain supermarket sell it frozen????? read more

I've been a Shaw/Star Market gal most of my life and in the year now that I've been going to Hannaford....I can safely say....Hannaford blows Shaws outta the water. This is of course after a truly painful overhaul of the store with new fixtures and much better layout. Case in point why I love them...they charged me for the wrong item at the seafood counter...not only did I get my money back, they gave me a dollar for my troubles! There's always a ton of fresh produce, fresh meats and fish. Especially the marinated meats and fish. The house made salmon burgers rule! I'm sooooo glad they've finally got more organic stuff. I swear they have more organic produce than Whole Foods. I agree with Tracie C. the Hannaford brand stuff is really good. I love the frozen lunch that has talapia in a pineapple sauce with couscous. Or for more pineapply goodness try their pineapple upside down cakes. (Also, in the frozen section.) read more

I'm giving Hannaford 4 stars because I love all the Hannaford brand stuff. I'm a huge fan of the granola, cottage cheese with pineapple...even the kettle chips were pretty good. The only thing that I didn't like as much was the Hannaford yogurt- too thick for my taste. That aside, I appreciate that they label where the produce is from, and I also like the selection. The staff has been great every time I've gone- one time there was a woman in front of me who was a little hard to deal with, but the staff was very friendly and polite to her. read more

They don't really have much discounts as Shaw's does. Their fruit & veggi section's small and not that fresh. I like how they have many Asian product such as noodles and stuff. BUT, I would recommend their sushi and rolls. Fresh and so tasty compare to price. It tastes better than the one from Whole Foods in Newton. The 4-Star review is explicitly for the sake of this review getting attention. The overall decency of the store is about a 4, so i guess it's fair. However, my review concerns their management. While I know most people don't give two fucks about how a store treats their workers, I do and I want to make it especially clear for others like myself. Hannafords in general, is a good, quality store. This particular Hannafords however treats their workers horribly. My significant other worked there recently, and thankfully just quit this shitty job. Initially my significant other applied to work hours between 9-5pm part time, when needed. However, after having his job security threatened if he didn't increase his availability, he agreed to work within the hours of opening to closing. Again, this was after he'd been forcefully coerced to do so by a manager named Alex. So he accepted his disposition and worked the hours he was assigned, an average of 35 hours a week, initially he requested 20, but again they forced his hand, making him work to exhaustion. This was his first job, and I recommended he work their because, like all grocery stores, one naturally learns how to work with a multitude of people, hard headed bosses and diverse peers. We did not anticipate how hard headed THESE bosses would be. Unfortunately, my significant other missed a shift this past weekend, and was very scared about losing his job, given how he's been treated up to this point. So, in an attempt to help him speak to higher authority, i vouched to call for him just to start the conversation off and create a comfortable atmosphere. After 45 mins of being on hold, passed through various lines and being hung up on 4 times, I FINALLY reached the man in charge of the Hannafords, a man named John. Initially he was cordial and kind, but soon turned out to be a rather sour man! I explained the situation to him, and explicitly stated I just wanted to act as a median to make the grounds for a comfortable conversation. Instead, John responded with sarcasm and omnipotence stating he held no interests or obligation in talking with me, shutting me down and talking over me like a typical authoritative figure. As a man who represents a rather famous restaurant, you would assume he'd be concerned about his workers, but instead he showed callous interests, demanding only to speak to my significant other, who I said was too nervous to speak with him alone. He also refused a speaker phone call. What would make a manager of a successful supermarket so nervous about talking with a workers significant other? I have no clue. Now, prior to all this childish nonsense displayed by the manager, there were tons of other issues that impacted my significant other's work. There's such a drastic lack of communication amongst the managers and shift leaders that it's comical. With too many people in charge naturally there comes an increased sense of confusion for line workers, like baggers and cashiers, but the impact this had on all of the employees was tangible. I spoke with 9 employees, two of which were supervisors. Not a single one of them enjoys their job, none of them like their bosses, and all of them expressed great anxiety to move on from Hannafords. On one occasion, my significant other's check was handed to the wrong worker because they shared a last name, and he received his check open, but fortunately still there. Finally, when my boyfriend tried requesting shift changes, and working things out so he could work a more manageable job, he was shut down. Today he met with John and likely someone else, and he expressed all of this as a single concern, as well as apologized and tried coming up with a solution to rectify his absence this past weekend. All John did was remind my significant other that despite being coerced, he still agreed to extend his hours, that regardless of what he initially was hired for, he'd made his own bed that he must lay in. I told him to quit, which he did. This is Yelp, where people can go to give honest reviews that inform the community about the real services being provided by a company. While we're mostly consumers who go to Hannafords and similar stores, there are also the workers who serve said stores. Often, these workers take the brunt of confrontations, issues consumers may have, etc, and people often overlook them because they're the face of the industry. Without these people who work for a minimum wage job, these businesses wouldn't run! It is with complete honesty that I say Hannafords brings quality product, but that this particular store treats their workers like shit. With a huge lack of concern for their employees, a neglectful set of ears and completely selfish motives, this Hannafords proves more than disgusting. I do plan on sending a rather professional email to the head of Hannafords if such a thing exist, and explaining exactly what his happening within this particular store. Unbelievable that with a synagogue across the street and Brandeis a few short blocks away, this supermarket consistently has the worst Passover foods section. Zero choices for yogurt, cottage cheese, cream cheese or any other dairy option. No breakfast options (cereal, pancakes). And the few choices they do have (which are completely uninteresting to me) are split up into 3-4 tiny sections in opposite corners of the store. Meh pretty much sums it up. I shop here because it's under half a mile from my house, the prices are reasonable (on par with Shaw's, definitely less than Whole Foods), there is a good selection of everything, and the Hannaford brand is pretty decent (try their whole rotisserie chicken - its really good and it's usually about $6). But the store is incredibly crowded, the people who shop here are a little sketchy, and the cashiers are very nice but incredibly inefficient. Seriously, no matter what time of day you come here, the store is mobbed. Middle of the work day on Monday. Tuesday night right before closing. Saturday at 8 am. It doesn't matter. The parking lot is always full, the aisles are always jammed with people and impossible to navigate and the check-out lines are always long. A lot of older people also seem to shop here, which often means that everyone sort of has to move in slow motion through the aisles. The baggers are nice but very slow (some of the people working there are mentally handicapped) and most of them do something that really irritates me - they bag almost every single item individually. If you come here and you buy 15 items, I guarantee you will have at least 10 bags. Why!?! It's bad for the environment and also makes it impossible to carry into your house in one trip. Arrrgh. In general (i.e. in Maine) I like the Hannaford stores better than or at least equal to other similar grocery stores. But this one is not a stellar example of a Hannaford. read more

They are overall pretty good but I am disappointed that they seem to be consistently shrinking their natural body products. I was buying the Mrs Meyer's body wash which worked great but now they have stopped selling that as well as a few other things seem to be going. Cheaper then Stop and Shop and Shaws and has a lot of the same stuff. The produce department is a bit lacking however which can be frustrating (but now that I have discovered Russos it doesn't matter, ha!). Still you can get all your pasta, cereal, frozen foods etc. for prices that are cheaper then the bigger chains. I am a new fan of this store since convincing my husband to check it out. Finally realizing that I had not been exaggerating week after week about leaving Stop $ Shop, feeling like my wallet has been gang raped, we made the trek out to Waltham from Allston. First we did a re-con mission, and scoped out our list at S$S, then did our shopping at Hannaford's. No embellishments; we saved over $100, and actually had fun. We've been going for a little over a month now, and have finally managed to stock our freezer and pantry so we only need to shop the circular. The following is a breakdown of review by department: Meats: I cannot give more than 5 stars for this, but if I could, I'd double it! Every week they are "giving: something away. The first week we went it was drumsticks at 49 cents a pound, the second and 3rd weeks it was angus hamburger at something ridiculous like 1.79, or 2.49 lb., chicken breasts at 1.79 lb?????!!!!! The regular prices are better than average, but the sale prices are just outstanding! The quality is also excellent. This is just at the normal meat case. They also have a premium case with a staff of butchers who will happily cut to order, and a large selection of fancy cuts, and prepared items for you to cook at home. Also, for fellow pack leaders, they will cut marrow bones up for you to suit the size of your dogs. I've got small-ish dogs, so they slice them to a nice manageable size for me, no extra charge. If you feed raw, I bet they would grind them for you for a lot less than a fancy feed store. Bakery: I haven't gotten much there, but the baguettes and Italian breads are nice, as are the bulkies. Everything else looks really good. The prices and variety seem comparable to other chains. They do have the Inspirations brand goodies as well. I saw some fruit syrups there last week I might like to try out. Lots of little luxuries that I would normally pass up, but I save so much on other things that I can now afford to splurge on occasion. Produce: Everything looks nice and fresh. The prices seem very good, but I still prefer to do most of my produce shopping at Russo's in Watertown. As I write this, I'm noticing the word "sketchy" in other reviews, in reference to some of the customer base. FYI; Waltham is home to one of the most successful non-profit, human services vendors in the region, Walthan Committee inc. As a result of this, Waltham also has a rather substantial community of differently abled persons (is that the latest PC term?). Fear not; these people are not "sketchy", just different. #^_~ Frozen: Ice cream prices cannot be beat! Hannafords average price for premium brands is about 2.99, compared to the same at S$S at over $5 a half gallon. They seem to average at least 50 cent savings over other comparable frozen food items at the other major chains. I have noticed that their stock of frozen veggies is seriously lacking. Last week was the first time they had a full case of brand name stock. Grocery: Again, a significant savings, on average, of most brand name products, and a good selection of store brand products. They also have good sale prices. Inspiration and Hannaford store brand: The Inspiration products seem to be consistently good, with decent prices as store brand gourmet product. The only things I've tried and not liked much are the cold cuts. The marinades and such are very nice. Hannaford brands also seem to be consistently good, and an excellent alternative to name brands for extra savings. We have been trying out the store brand when it fits our list. So far I love the soups, the veggies are "OK", the waffles are terrible. The dry pasta is very good, and the price is excellent. Usually 2/1.00, 3/1.00, or 3/2.00 for the fancier shapes. The cereals aren't bad, and are pretty much the same as their brand name cousins, but cheaper. If I can edit this, I'll turn it into a separate review to be updated as we try more stuff. Service: Service here gets a rave review :) Every interaction I have had with Hannaford's staff has been helpful and pleasant. If you don't see it on the shelf, and you ask about it...the employee will *actually* go look for it, not just pretend to, and if they don't have it, they will find out if they can get it, or when they expect it in. read more

I'm not a frequent visitor of this store. I used the self check out option and used debit card payment. You can't help but notice the camera/screen in front of you. What I didn't realize until I was finished was that the camera views the key pad as you type your bank pin number. I report this to the customer service desk. I recommend covering the keypad with your hand so the camera can not view you entering your pin number. read more

My least favorite supermarket in the Waltham area. The very few times I have come here out of convenience, I've come across rude employees. I went to buy salmon and asked if he could scale the fish. The man said no, looked annoyed but then did it anyway. Am I supposed to be grateful that he did it while acting like I was wasting his time? I want to add that I asked politely and did thank him. I like Hannaford's...good prices, decent bakery section, surprisingly better produce than the Auburndale Shaw's I frequent, and I like their star rating system and their organic section is a little more diverse than your average non-organic market. HOWEVER, the people who work there are usually pretty surly...sometimes bordering on scary!!! Not a place to go out of your way for, but it's not bad. Just having moved from California, my husband and I had no idea what to expect in a grocery store here in town. Hannafords is our local shop and we are excited it's so good. The produce is always fresh and tastes great (which is a big deal for me coming from California!), the deli, bakery, meat counter are stocked full and helpful, and best of all for those on a tighter budget - the store brand is GOOD. I was worried we'd have to make a weekly drive to trader joes to supplement, but we're happy with Hannafords! read more

Huge, clean supermarket with ample parking. They had a variety of hard to find fruits from other lands and fresh meats. Deli was good, tried the house made seafood salad which was excellent. Grocery shopping is one of my favorite activities so it's rare for me not to enjoy a supermarket. Hannaford is one of the worst grocery chains I have been to. The products they carry are fine but they are WAY overpriced. The same bread I get at star market was $2 more at hannaford. I could maybe understand the insane mark up if the store was located in a rich neighborhood but this is waltham! They cannot be serious. I left empty handed not because they didn't have anything I wanted but because they were ridiculously overpriced. I would drive a few extra minutes to market basket where the deals are good.
