I brought my truck in for service and they broke the engine air filter cover -- and won't admit to it. I showed Jaime, the service advisor, the damage on my way home right after the appointment. The cover was left open, and the hook that holds it in place was broken. I also spoke with Assistant Service Manager Brendan Cooney, who came out, looked at it, and made excuses instead of taking responsibility. No help whatsoever. This is especially frustrating because I have a prepaid service plan through November 2027 that I purchased with my truck. Despite that, I will never return to this dealership. To make matters worse, the Toyota dealership in Santa Rosa hit my truck while it was in for service. Two different dealerships, same lack of professionalism and accountability. Jose R. is the worst employee there. I went in for two recalls. He said that the part would be in around noon and I should have my car by the end of the day; with both recalls completed. I picked up my car and Jose R. stated that the part was not there and that I can take my car and that he would call me when the other part was in to finish the second recall. Did not receive a call within the week and called and Jose stated that they had the part and forgot to call me. I lett my car and received a call from Jose R. stating that they had busted my radiator and would have to order a new one tomorrow. Three days without my car and two trips. Got my car back after I called them several times to see if they had it ready. Got home and radiator fluid leaked all over my driveway. They had to send someone home to fix it. I had contacted 9 area dealerships trying to find someone who would get me the car I wanted at a competitive price. Ivan at Hansel Toyota responded to my inquiry -- as did many other dealerships -- but Ivan stayed aligned with my particular specs (i.e. didn't try and coax me into a car other than what I said I wanted), was responsive to follow-ups, and ultimately got me a good price (given that it's currently a seller's market b/c of tight inventory). Two years ago my husband and I bought two Subaru Outbacks from Ivan Perez-Pacheco at Hansel Toyota in Petaluma. We wanted to switch from our sedan to an SUV that would be easier to get in and out of. The first Outback had a high trim level with lots of electronic gadgets. We are old, and my husband has medical issues. We learned shortly after the purchase that my husband's pacemaker and other implants could make him vulnerable to electronic activity. When we asked Ivan if we could exchange the Outback for one with a low trim level, including a conventional keyed entry, he was as concerned as we were and made the exchange happen fast and hassle-free. We did a lot of driving for a while because my husband was comfortable in the car and we knew he was safe. Unfortunately, his medical issues gradually limited his ability to go for a drive. The lack of use drained the battery more than once. I turned to Ivan again for help. We had given up our Toyota Corolla when we switched to the Subaru. Since getting my husband in and out of the car was no longer an issue, and Toyotas have especially robust electrical systems, I asked Ivan to find a Corolla. He knows we live in a remote area where it is scary to be without a car that starts. He worked with Almir Crnovic to find just the right Corolla, literally, overnight, and, with the help of other members of the amazing sales team at Hansel, the Corolla was in our driveway the next day. This review is for purchase only. I have NOT had (or had need of) service here. It's getting tough to buy cars, what with manufacturers tightening their logistics and the days of overproduction long gone. I'd tried to pick up a new 2023 last year, but the model and trim I wanted wasn't available by July when my hunt began. After being jerked around by dealers on the south Central Coast, I decided to expand my search. On drives (for various reasons) up and down the state and inland, I'd stop by dealerships, talk to sales team members, give them the details of what I was looking for, get on a call list and press on. I've since been contacted countless times by half a dozen dealerships all repeatedly offering me models, makes, colors and trims I not only didn't ask for but have specifically told them I don't want. In autumn 2023 I was made aware of a publicly accessible, online allocation list on which I found the car I wanted in the trim I wanted. It was allocated to Hansel, so I contacted them via their website with my details. Logan got back to me in pretty short order, and he was a dream to work with from that point through my purchase yesterday (Jan. 25). Through awaiting its production, shipping and delivery to the dealership (a nearly two-month process), Logan kept me informed without being a bother, and answered inquiries into its progress in a timely fashion. Logan's communication (via text) was clear, informative, patient, fun. I figured I was workin' with an old guy (like me) since his texts were professional, punctuated with grammar and spelling that made understanding each other clear and easy. He worked with our schedule for pickup since we were driving nearly 300 miles north to the dealership from our home. We kept in touch on our drive north, and the car was out front, fueled up, charged up and ready when we arrived. We couldn't have been on the lot two minutes before Service Manager Ayman shook our hands, filling in for Logan who was helping another customer at the moment. Together, Logan (not an old guy, by the way) and Ayman were a fun team, easy to talk to, no upsell, no pushiness. Our deal had been settled via text, and they didn't try to make any changes nor d*ck around at the last minute, as I'd become so used to after half a lifetime of dealing with auto sales folk, particularly at dealerships. HOW REFRESHING! Joey in financing was warm, welcoming and straightforward, talked us through the factory and extended warranty and service offers, listened to and understood clearly my questions and gave informative answers while figuring out what our needs were over the potential for further upsell on that end. We were on the lot for a little over 1.5 hours, a bit longer than I'd anticipated, but I hadn't realized there was so much waiting time for DMV, etc. contacts, so in the end that time felt productive for the most part. I didn't feel like we were just sitting around waiting for...who knows what. (Previous purchases at other dealers have averaged 3-5 hours, and typically part of that wait is more than an hour for a "car wash" since other dealers apparently don't prep the car before buyer's scheduled arrival.) Was it worth a 540-mile round trip, 14-hour (including lunch at Moylan's Brewery) road trip dealing with southbound Bay Area traffic (how do y'all DEAL with that daily!?)? Absolutely. Sometimes you don't know how great you have it until you're gone. Service department - I took my Prius to Hansel for years. I had some costlier repairs done (suspension work is the costliest that comes to mind) but, 9 times out of 10 it was just scheduled maintenance. Oil changes, tire rotations, inspection checks. I moved recently and I started taking my car to a different Toyota dealership. They had some issues. I gave them some grace. I went back a few times and each time I'd be expecting a $80-$90 oil change or a $30 tire rotation and they're like oh, actually, you need over $1k in work done. First couple of times, it's an old car, it has almost 200k miles on it. Sure, believable. I went ahead and paid. But, when it became a routine, I started getting skeptical. How could my car have gone from pretty good shape to constantly needing costly repairs, simply because I was taking it to a different dealership? I took my car to an independent shop instead that was much more honest and had much better pricing. Anyway, now that I understand how honest the folks at Hansel Toyota are, how knowledgeable they are, how organized they are, I've gone from feeling pretty neutral to feeling pretty lucky to have been living near such a great dealership. read more

Bought a used car from Hansel Toyota in Petaluma in July. I took my car to a mechanic for a second opinion on everything and to make sure everything is all good while I still am under the 30 day buyer warranty. I want this to be my family car and plan on keeping it running for years to come. When I purchased the car, I was repeatedly assured that if I have any concerns I can have it covered under the 30 day 1,000 mile warranty. The mechanic noticed the transmission fluid is contaminated and discolored, signifying a service is needed. The same goes for the oil. While inspecting, they also noticed that the wheel lock key was missing so they had no way of accessing anything past the wheel locks. I contacted the manager AC who tried to dismiss me to the service team saying they would contact me, but then the service team would never actually follow up with me and reach out. I had to call them first in order to establish a conversation about this. When I did, they were clueless about the situation saying they didn't hear about it from ac. It took 3 phone calls for them to understand what was going on. Long story short, I was told that AC decided they would not be covering any oil change or transmission fluid exchange under the 30 day warranty, although they would order new wheel locks. The service team member Jerry told me he'd call me once the parts arrive. I had to call them a month later because I never heard back, which I was told they were there, and I could schedule an appointment as soon as the next day to get them replaced. Why I wasn't called, not sure. not surprised. When it comes to the transmission fluid and oil change, along with some other fluids that this mechanic told me needed to be topped off, I'm confident that the 60,000 mile service was never done on this vehicle and the team knew about it and knew that it would glide by just in time to be sold. The service team member Jerry told me over text that they do not perform these services as it would "increase the value of the vehicle and therefore make the vehicle more expensive at sale" this tells me that they would rather get the car out on the lot for a lower price so that they could more easily make a sale rather than selling a slightly higher priced car that does not need any services as soon as a buyer takes it home. I've had my car for a little over a month and the regular maintenance light is already on, yet these people deny that it needed any of these services when it was in their hands. I emailed the general manager, Ryan Seaman, trying to express my concerns and find a fair resolution, I never received a single response. When I told both the manager and the service advisor that I got this information from the mechanic, I was questioned multiple times on why I would take it to a mechanic. If their 120 something point inspection is so reliable why are they questioning me on a second opinion? I find it funny that they put on license plate frames saying 'Hansel- caring drives us' when they clearly do not care whatsoever once it is out of their hands. read more

I Scheduled an oil change and inspection with these clowns and they used a 35k service on a car with mileage in the low 20's that did not include an oil change. They did not even read the appointment details. When we brought it back down to get the oil change we originally ordered they said we could book anything online and it does not matter because the 35k service was the next one to use. When we said we had mileage in the low 20's and asked why they used a 35k service, they told us we are not putting enough mileage on it. That is the stupidest answer I have ever heard. They are blaming us for not putting mileage on our car and took no responsibility for messing up the service. They even reset my "service required" light which indicates it needs an oil change and did not tell me they did not do the oil change. That is dishonest and a lack of professionalism in my opinion. It was only after I called them when I did not see an oil service on my receipt that they admitted to not doing it. I will never go there again and warn others to use caution when using Hansel Toyota service. read more

Service department was terrible from the start on a warranty issue from day one. Service department has been no better since, no communication or call backs when trying to speak to service manager. Vehicle still has problems, dealership says to bad and still unable to reach anybody in charge in the service department. First and last Toyota. After confirming the purchase of a vehicle, including detailed communications about price and payment, the dealership assured us that the car would be detailed and ready for pick-up the next morning. However, shortly before we arrived, we were informed that several other buyers were also scheduled to come in for the same vehicle. Despite our appointment and confirmation, the car was sold to another customer who arrived just moments before us (as in, I watched him walk in 30 seconds before me). By promising the same vehicle to MULTIPLE buyers, Hansel Toyota created an unnecessarily competitive and frustrating situation, which reflects poorly on their business practices. This kind of approach shows a clear lack of transparency and respect for customers. I would not recommend doing business with Hansel Toyota based on this experience. read more

I had high hopes when I started working with Ivan Perez-Pacheco at Hansel Toyota, but unfortunately, the experience left a lot to be desired. When I expressed interest in a specific vehicle, Ivan asked me to put down a $500 deposit and run a credit check before the car was even shipped in for me to look at. This was just to see the car and specifically to check out the exterior color, which is one of the most important factors in choosing a car. I told him clearly that I wasn't comfortable putting money down on something I hadn't seen in person and might not even like. That didn't seem unreasonable to me, but the whole thing felt like pressure to commit before I was ready. While Ivan came across as knowledgeable in person, his tone over text was off-putting, abrupt and lacking the warmth or professionalism I would expect when making such a big purchase. A few days later, after I told him I was going to check out the same car in a different town (specifically to see the color), he circled back and asked my thoughts on it. By that point, I had already made my purchase elsewhere with a salesperson who actually listened to me and respected my process. In the end, this felt more like a transactional interaction than a customer-focused experience. I wouldn't recommend working with Ivan based on how things went. Buying a car should feel exciting, not pressured or uncomfortable and certainly not asking for money before you've even seen a car. read more

Chris Camp is the best salesperson I have ever worked with. I inquired about a used Tacoma at Hansel and Chris gave me a call right away. I live in Sunnyvale and asked Chris if he could ensure the truck was still on the lot and if he could check it for any noticeable dents/scratches/stains. He immediately went and found the truck and provided me with a bunch of pictures and ensured that the truck was in great condition. He set the truck aside for me as my family and I made the 1 hour and 45 minutes drive from Sunnyvale to Petaluma. The truck was absolutely beautiful, but the service did not stop there. Chris ensured that I took the truck on a long test drive, and when we got back he made sure that my pre-approval rate from my credit union (which was better than Toyota's current rate by 2%) was the rate we used during financing. At no point did he try and upsell me, he respected my time and worked quickly to get the financing started. Ivan Pacheco was also great. He had all the financing paperwork printed and ready for me. Again, no upselling and he was super helpful in explaining the details of the financing deal. It was easily the fastest and smoothest financing deal I've ever done at a dealership. The Toyota Hansel store itself is also amazing! When I walked in I was confused because the ambiance is similar to a coffee shop, not a car dealership (and I mean that in a good way). Also, the coffee machine they have made a really decent cup of coffee! Chris had the detail team clean up the truck before sending me on my way back to Sunnyvale. Easily the best experience I have had at any car dealership. I find it especially nice that even though I was buying a used vehicle I felt like I was getting the new car treatment. 10 out of 10 would definitely buy from Hansel again. read more

We took the car to a mechanic and they said it was "perfect" . Well maintained and fixed up before selling. Very straight forward, no nonsense process. They use Redwood Credit until for financing which was easy and appreciated because they have the best rates. I knocked off one star because they only had one key and this was not discovered until we had already done the paperwork. And they said they would call regarding the key and they did not. Getting a new key is a difficult, expensive and total pain in the ass. read more

Everything about the scheduling was pretty seamless. Called, spoke to a real person, made an appointment for a Monday morning. Cool. I get there, meet the advisor and get checked in. He says the coupon I have for an oil change doesn't include a tire rotation and asked if I wanted one. I asked if there's a cost, he says a little bit. I asked how much is a little bit? He says $40. When I hesitated; mostly because other competitors offer this for free, he says since it seems like I'm a bargain shopper, that maybe I should consider their maintenance package. It's $350 upfront but it'll pay off in the long run with future visits. After feeling like he's made a decision on me as a consumer, I decline both the package and rotation. After an hour I get my car back and it's $95 out the door. He says my tires are fine, 6-7 on the tread. Really?! I asked. He says yep? They're good. This absolutely blew my mind considering I drive about 100 miles per day for work and can't remember the last time I got a new set of tires. I was fully anticipating dropping like $800+ on tires, but ok. I have magic tires apparently. After the visit, I go to my local tire shop to get a free rotation. They ended up telling me my tires are shot, they can't rotate them and recommend I get a new set. Spoiler- I gave them my money. I don't think I'll go back to Toyota. It's one thing to size up a customer right in front of them. It's another to put their safety at risk with low to bald tread and send them on their way after saying everything is fine. They get two stars for how easy it was to make the appointment. read more

As the owner of a small local business, I am always impressed when I get exceptional service myself. I stopped going to the dealerships for my truck a few years ago due to some very negative dealings at a similar Marin dealership. Until moving to Petaluma, I refused to go to the dealership for my truck's service. Now here in Petaluma, I found Hansel and my opinion has changed. We needed one of our company trucks serviced and reached out reluctantly to schedule. Upon arrival, they greeted us like royalty. We were then taken and immediately met by a Service Advisor, Anthony S. We had only booked one truck and while checking in for that one, realized we were close to the milage for service for our other truck and asked if we could do both trucks at the same time. We were elated when Anthony said Yes. I don't own the smallest Tundra, but Anthony and his service team took it on, and were able to get the service work done in appropriate time and we were always kept in the loop. I am always happy when employees at a company take the initiative to offer exceptional customer service. And a special thank you to the mechanics that had to deal with the difficulties. The service we received from Anthony and the service team here, will make us Hansel customers for life. I would gladly recommend this dealership to anyone that needs their Toyota worked on. During the financing part of the experience, I was informed that Toyota Motor Credit Corporation denied my credit request for their special rate of 48 months at 4.99% due to lack of auto loan history. Makes sense. I was informed that only Wells Fargo Auto Loan and Chase Auto Loan had accepted my request, both at a much higher interest rate ( 7.0% +) than Toyota Motor Credit Corporation. Today I received two official application denials from Toyota Motor Credit Corporation. It states: "Our decision to deny your request was based on the reason(s) stated below: -We denied your request because your application is incomplete." Which contradicts what the finance department told me was the reason for my denial. Not sure if it was an oversight, a lie, or what from the finance department, but I can only assume that an official letter from Toyota Motor Credit Corporation offers more accurate information than in-person verbal information. I was originally struggling with my experience at Hansel Toyota as per my previous review, which I could chalk up to my lack of research into the dealership. However, the experience again feels dishonest, like an intended lack of transparency and cements my experience at Hansel Toyota as a stereotyped "scummy" dealership one. read more

I am very impressed with the staff at Hansel Toyota in Petaluma. My wife and I went into the dealership, just looking around. Angela and Austin showed us around. I was interested in a used car. However, Austin pointed out that Toyotas do not lose value and that a used vehicle is not that much cheaper than a new one. As a result, we purchased a new SUV. I dread bringing my car here. The dude I'm assigned to is just ...uncomfortable to deal with. He's one of those people that either talks strangely or puts on an affected "customer-service" voice. I'm sure the people that work here know exactly who I'm referring to. It's unsettling and it's hard to trust. As a woman, it doesn't land well. Like it's condescending in some way. Anyway, I'm sure he's a great guy, addresses men and woman the same, and is great at his job but, for what it's worth, I'm relieved to know I can bring my car somewhere else. I will never bring my 2020 Tacoma there again for any service period. They are dishonest and untrustworthy! They quoted me $1100.00 for a diagnosis and a new thermostat. I contacted yotaluma and they will do it for $450.00! This is very upsetting to me as I have been a loyal customer for over 30 years!! read more
