My experience with Hansen & Sons started with a torn-off chimney part and some background research and, when that came up pretty darn good, I was especially drawn to using a local, long established family-owned business whose employees seem to stick around a long time--a sign that they are valued and treated fairly. I visited the office twice and asked questions and learned more about the original estimate that I got to fix the chimney cap on my 1930's brick home. The masonry crew did a very good job getting my chimney cap up to code. When it was additionally verified that my chimney was built in a very non-conforming way by the original builder-owner-resident (a fact that I knew for years) making it unsafe to burn wood without a stainless liner, they offered two solutions--liner or a gas insert. At each stage of this work, communication was excellent. I always had the option of doing nothing and not using the fireplace. No pressure. But, when I did make the decision to go with gas, a different crew fitted an insert and cleaned up after themselves. Hansen has been around for quite a while and they guarantee the fireplaces that they have installed. I had the work done in the summer and expect to enjoy the pleasant use of my fireplace (which will not add to particulates to the air!) as the weather has cooled. read more

We just had Hansen replace a really o-o-o-o-ld unit that hadn't been turned on for in 4 years because the thermal glass was broken, and we just didn't want to deal with it ~ until it went down to -12° a few weeks ago - lol Hansen really made the replacement project easy and smooth. Without going into all the little details, I'll just say they did a straight up amazing job. They helped us pick a unit that worked in that space, and got it fast. They took care of everything. Permits, inspections, removing the old, installing the new, the stonework, the masonry, etc. There were a couple of engineering challenges along the way, but they solved them expertly (stuff like some wall corners not being square or level). We added a couple of things mid-project (ok, two huge things - a hearth and stacked stone). They worked with that. I'm sure all their guys are great, but the one we got - Tony - was just expert incredible. He was onsite, but he made things happen with the help of a team in the background, and made it all come together. I can't thank them enough. They pretty much made the whole thing hassle-free. We moved into our new home in the spring of 2011. A firewood heating stove and gas fireplace had been installed by another store / contractor. This past spring my wife noticed that the black square frame attached to the piping and ceiling for the firewood stove was leaking water after a rainstorm. We also noted a clunking sound when there were high winds. We decided to have a chimney sweep / cleaning done by Hanson & Sons after seeing the advertisement in a magazine. The technician arrived and the chimney sweep cleaning was done in a short amount of time. We asked him about the water leak, and he went on the roof to investigate the two chimneys and chase cap. The chase was a standard flat chase and some of the water divertor seals had gotten old and were missing, and the pipe bracings were no longer in place for the inner piping of one of the chimneys. The technician recommended we install a new pitched stainless-steel chase. It was ordered and installed. The clunking sound was also fixed. All the work was done professionally. Last autumn, I contacted them through their website to fix the damper because it wasn't working. Also, to check fireplace itself. They called me in a few days and made appointment. When the guy came, he cleaned out old ashes in fireplace right away without comment. Turned out it's just stack because it wasn't used a few years. But they found a few loose firebricks at backside. We went down to basement because I want checkup the one there too. Unfortunately, we found a little puddle of water in the basement which actually was rainwater (Big rain a day before) from crack on top of the chimney. I wanted use the fireplace in basement too, but that one needed new liner which was very expensive. No wonder that one wasn't used long time. So we only fixed one fireplace in Living room. They were honest about what they can do and which doesn't need if we don't want.(for safety) He was friendly and answered all questions I had and more. Work was neat and efficient, and cleaned everything after work. Now, my husband, my dog and I enjoy fire every Friday. read more

Talk about great customer service. I called for help as I turned on my fireplace for the first time to warm up my family room in the morning. So when it was nice and cozy, I tried to turn it off and it would not turn off. I tried everything I knew how to do with no success. I called You guys for help. A very pleasant gal named Samantha answered the phone. After explaining my dilemma, she asked if I knew how to turn off the gas in the basement. Unfortunately I did not. She said ," If you give me 25-30 minutes, I'll come out and see." She actually showed up at my home herself and proceeded to get the problem under control by handling the hot fireplace screen and replacing the batteries in the receiver. Works perfectly now. We moved to our 1977 era colonial in Cherrywood in 2019. That year we had Todd Kuwik, General Manager, visit for an evaluation of the back to back woodburning fireplaces. He discovered that they were not functional and the fireboxes had not been built correctly. Todd recommended conversion to gas. My wife and I decided to budget that work for 2020. The crew arrived on time on the days that they were scheduled, did the work quickly and efficiently, and we love the finished product. The fireplaces are in use a good part of the winter now. Hansen and Sons also had a crew repair the spalling brick and mortar on the chimney and replace the chimney cap. They even included a thorough cleaning of the flues and poorly built fireboxes. Hansen & Sons did a good quality job and were professional in scheduling and such. We're very pleased with the end result of their work. They ended up reducing our final bill when we pointed out some of the work on the final bill was actually not done because during repairs, they found they didn't need to do a couple things. I feel like we shouldn't have had to point that out. Also, in cleaning out the gutters at end of November, I found a stretch of about 20 feet of gutters at the front of the house that had excessive amount of repair debris (broken brick and loose/granular mortar/sand stuff. Took me a lot of extra time to clean that area of the gutters out. Would have been nice if they had taken the time to clean all that up instead of leaving it for the customer. read more

We were in the process of selling our mom's house, had listed the house w/a gas log fireplace in the living room (no one remembered the last time it had actually been used), we got an offer, the inspector couldn't get the fireplace to work. Our realtor had Hansen & Sons on their list of "recommended contractors". We gave them a call, they came within a couple of days, informed us that we needed a new/up to date & code insert and gas valves and could do the work that day if we were interested in one they had at the shop - it was a beautiful birch log insert, which looks fantastic in the house. It is a distinct pleasure to support Hansen and Sons. They came to our rescue twice. We had a very serious flooding problem in a back stairs which lead to our basement. We were tired of mopping up after every storm. Hansen came out diagnosed the problem and a remedy. The were in the process of installing Belco Doors when we had an unexpected rain storm. They worked right through the storm under very unpleasant circumstances and improvised a temporary protection. They returned after the storm and built a beautiful permanent solution. The second time was when a car smashed into the corner of our brick house and did severe damage. They replaced our sixty year old brick corner in a seamless matching way. My wife and I used services of Hansen&Sons this past summer to fix problems with a chimney that was allowing water to leak through the roof. They were very well organized and very prompt. First a company representative came to our home, examined the chimney to determine the work needed, and prepared a quote, which we accepted. A few days later, workers arrived, when expected, and performed the work, which included substantial rebuilding of the chimney area. We noted that the workers were very careful to remove leftover materials and other items, leaving the area in fine shape. The work completely eliminated the leakage, among other good results. Hansen and Sons installed a gas insert into our home a couple years ago. Since our home is an old Victorian, adapting the modern insert to the existing fireplace was challenging in many ways. Most notably they had to install electrical and a gas line while on their backs as the room where the fireplace is located only has an earthen crawlspace. They did an awesome job and we don't have anything but good things to say about their crew, attention to detail and their ownership. I don't recall seeing any construction dust throughout the process. They were very willing to come back out to the home in the one occasion we needed a little help with a blocked gas line. We bought an old house with a non-working fireplace. We wanted a wood stove insert and were attracted to the modern catalytic converter options that burn wood more slowly and produce more heat. We found the details intimidating. The staff at Hansen & Sons were very helpful in showing us the options. They installed a sleek Regency model in November. We spent the entire Wisconsin winter glued to the fireplace. It heated the house (lower utility bills), it was a pleasure to look at, and no smoke in the house. After detecting a sooty smell in our vacation cottage I found Hansen and Sons. Not only could they inspect the problem but also do repair. As the chimney was 45 years old it had some leakage issues. A new stainless steel chimney liner and reconstruction of the chimney top was done. They didn't just patch it but removed the stones from the roof up, put in new flashing and reconstructed the chimney so it looked just like the original. They redid the top cement cap so it will shed water correctly preventing the leakage problem from happening again. Now we do yearly inspections to keep everything safe. They only do what is necessary and don't unnecessarily charge me for a service not needed. read more

My wife and I were looking to refit our wood burning fireplace to gas so that we'd actually use it. We looked around at the different places we had recommended to us in the area, and were really disappointed by all of them. With winter coming on, we noticed that Hansen and Sons was just down the street from us in Monona, and thought "why not?" What a great idea! From start to finish they were great: friendly, willing to work with us, and reasonably priced. Our fireplace has been refit for two years now, and we're still very happy. We were able to turn our heat down considerably and still be comfortable in the living room, so we've ended up saving on our gas bill. I'd STRONGLY recommend them. read more

At first I was very pleased. They installed our new gas fireplace insert and it worked great. And then it didn't. They came out several times and finally discovered an installation error they had made. They not only quickly fixed the problem but installed a chimney extender to my other chimney (that vents my basement woodstove) to eliminate the potential problem of the air intake from the new unit pulling in sooty air from the woodstove smoke. So all is right with the world. At no time did they even hint at charging me. They even ate the cost of the extender. If not for the initial error and subsequent inconvenience of multiple visits, I'd have given them 5 stars. read more

They are not worth using I would not recommend them I'm only giving them one star becuse they modified my Harmon stove they said it was the only way they could clean my pellit stove so I let them do It they charged me a a lot for doing that and cleaning my pellit stove I tried to get them to come out and clean it agsin and they said they couldn't do it it has to be one of there's so now I'm stuck I gotta find some other service that can clean it I'm very disappointed in this service from Hanson and sons I would never agsin use them I'll be looking else where for the cleaning there over priced And do shotty work don't use them you'll be sorry you did read more

We contacted Hansen and Sons to get a quote on removing our chimney's and replacing them with a metal pipe as well as installing a gas fireplace in our wood burning fireplace. They responded quickly and were out and offered me a competitive quote. We needed to coordinate the job with our roofers and the staff at Hansen was more than accommodating and stayed true to the schedule that we had all decided on. The chimney's were replaced without incident and the gas fireplace looks and operates wonderfully. Thanks so much to the team at Hansen for doing a great job. I was pleasantly surprised at how everything fell into place with my fireplace. It all went as planned and that almost never happens for me! The service man came when I was told and was the neatest man ever! I seriously did not have one thing to clean up after he left. He was very detail orientated didn't quite like the way one thing looked so he fabricated an additional pice at the shop and brought it back the next day and installed it. Again being very conscious of not making a mess. He explained all the whistles and bells to me about my fireplace in simple instructions. Love it! Wish I would have done it 10 years ago! read more
