Hansens Ski Shop- Thanks Squealy ( Michael H.) for custom fitting Intuition Pro Ski Boot Liners for my Dalbello Kryptons. The factory boot liners don't cut it for me for a snug and comfortable fit so I can feel connected to my skis without feeling like a subject of the inquisition. I will gladly endure 15 minutes of discomfort to allow the heated Intuition Liner to mold to my foot, orthodic footbed and boot shell so I can ski all day without pain. Great shop for so many reasons, there's snowboard and ski support is incredible for being so far from the snow. The surfboards are a bit overpriced, and the wetsuits selection is average for a surf shop, but the service and the family behind this place are incredible. They give a 10% military discount, and every bit helps as you know. I am 58 years old and have skied for many decades. I was also raised in the local mountains. I have been renting ski equipment since the nineties. I decided to get all new gear but needed ski boots first. I went to REI off of Convoy and stood around for 45 minutes, but they were so busy I left. I am glad I ran into Christian in Hanson's ski department. He was very knowledgeable and turned me on to the new Nordica rear entry ski boots. I have used those in Mammoth recently for 2 days, and I've never had a better fitting ski boot! I wanted to get a 1/2 size bigger, and he talked me out of it. I'm glad I didn't do it. When searching surf shops in San Diego, this shop rose to the top of the list. Even though it was a drive from where we were staying, it was worth it. We just happened to be there on one of their sidewalk sale days. They had a ton of men's board shorts on sale as well as flip flops and other shoes. We didn't intend to buy anything before we walked in, but they had such a great selection of clothing, watches, shoes, accessories and beach related supplies, that we just couldn't help ourselves! Background: So I just bought some snowboard boots on-line (Thirty-two's) and was pretty pleased for finding a good deal. However, they needed to be "heat molded (a feature that Thirty-two does for better fitting)". I couldn't find anyone locally to do them and called Thirty-two directly and they directed me here. Upon my arrival, I was directed to speak to "Squeely". I found him and he did not disappoint. So instead of just doing the standard "heat molding", Squeely did so much more. It wasn't just a heat mold that he did, but it felt like a custom fitting. I seriously thought/felt like I had a factory guy doing my adjustments and stuff. He took so much time, explained everything he was doing, why he was doing it, and what it did (for better fit and performance). To come up from San Diego, I felt like eh. But after this, I'm going to do all my gear and stuff from here. Some of the best customer service I've ever had and I'll def be returning for my future needs. I have arch issues requiring orthotics which were not working in my ski boots. Squeely retrofitted my boots with an alternative footed that solved my problem. Squealy was very very helpful with molding my new snowboard boots and making sure that they were comfortable and fit properly. My toes were hitting the front edge of the boots but because of his amazing knowledge and work I don't have that problem anymore. :) If anyone needs their ski or snowboard boots adjustable he's the guy! We love coming to Hansens and have been coming here for years I remember skipping school going to Hansens getting some wax for our boards and heading over to Swami's or moonlight well those were some great days and great times. Hansens was much smaller then they were also a lot less expensive. They still are a great Surf Shop and always have classic styling and classic attire. If you're in the market for anything beach related they have it. Ken used to be a customer of mine when I sold bodyboards they were also first-rate in all of their business practices. I have a lot of respect for this place and I also spend a lot of money there because I know I'm getting a great value and also the latest in beachsports equipment. This review is for Squeely. Came in on Wednesday, Feb. 17 needing my brand new snowboard boots heat molded. Squeely told me everything that was going to happen and what he was doing to make my boots fit perfectly. He recommend that I purchase a pair inserts that would make my boots more comfy and that he would trim down to fit my feet. I took his advice and I did the best riding I've done in years! Squealy is by far the best snowboard boot fitter and most all round knowledgeable surf, skate, snow employee I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with and I've been in 100's of shops as a customer since 1964 (I'm 70). In snowboarding I ride a 173 Rossignol hard plate carving board that flies like an F 18 and demands great fitting boots. However, my old boots wore out and it's very difficult living in So Cal finding a pair of good fitting hard boots. I became bummed, felt old and out of touch with no more contacts, and about to give up snowboarding. Then an old surf/skate/snow friend told me about a guy named "Squeaky" at Hansen's in Encinitas and that he was the Snowboard Boot Guru. So I met "Squeaky" at Hansen's, showed him my unique carving set up, and the problematic situation I was in with a new pair of boots that were super stiff and painful. To my unexpected delight, Squeaky KNEW EXACTLY what I needed and gave me his undivided attention. The customizing of my boot required all his knowledge, the proper shop tools, workshop materials, and experience. Finding someone like Squeaky in San Diego is like searching for a needle in a haystack. But there he was, Squeaky, the Boot Fitting Guru! I couldn't believe it!! This guy has spent his entire life on the slopes and on the water, working in shops to make his living. I forgot how long he has been working at Hansen's but I'm stoked I met him. He's the real deal, a consummate pro, a pleasure to work with and in my opinion, Squeaky gives Hansen's the soul it was built on when it first opened on a dirt bluff in the early 60's. Thanks for putting me back on slopes and giving me that "stoked fever." I'll be back in a month to pick up that new Stewart 9'0" Redliner. We came here today hoping to do a bit of shopping for an upcoming trip. Hubby was still looking for shorts and casual shirts that would travel well. He hit the jackpot and found 4 shorts, 2 shirts and even a pair of Olukai shoes. He loves his flip-flops and was really excited to see a casual canvas slip-on shoe he could wear. They stock everything from great fashion to snow and surf attire to an fine array of surfboard and snowboards/skis during the season as well as some great home decor pieces including works from local artists. They do carry all the top brands so you are not likely to find that unual one-of-a-kind piece of clothing. This place has been a staple in the Cardiff /Encinitas diet since 1967 when surfboard shaper Don Hansen moved his business from Hawaii to the mainland. His boards are still sold here as well as many other top brands. The shop turns into a ski/board rental place during the winter months. I've seen this store blossom over the years into a large, yet homey place to shop. The only thing is that they are not cheap and they don't take American Express. I love love love this place. I so yearn for the day when I could actually wear the stuff that they sell. Hansen's is really in a league of it's own when it comes to surf shops. Seriously they must have very talented buyers. You can get pretty much everything here for the active lifestyle that is California. We have bought clothes, shoes, candles, flip flops, sunglasses, surfboards, snowboards, home decor, books, etc etc etc. Everyone seems pretty knowledgeable about the various sports products and a few times a year they have a real kick ass sidewalk sale. Which is important because Hansen's can be a bit pricey, but not unrealistic compared to other surf shops. Hansen's selection really can't be beat. There's not many other clothing stores/boutiques in the area that have a great selection like this spot. It's a little pricey, but they have huge sales every now-and-then. Best ski boot fitter on the planet! So, I'm an intermediate skier. I have a very wide foot with a very high instep and my old ski boots were killing me, Not to mention they were too big for me and causing me to ski like dodo! . So a went to Hansen's in the off season to get some enlightenment about finding some WIDE ski boots. Well, SQUEALY there set me on the right track! While his store didn't have any boots that would work for me we spent about an hour looking for a boot that I could easily get into and would perform well. Squealy suggested I go get a pair of FULL TILT DECENDANT. Bingo! I went to Evo and ordered a pair, tried them on and then went to Hansen's to get fitted. AMAZING! FINALLY! someone who really knows their stuff! He even did some extra work on the boots to take away a couple of 'hot spots' where my feet were a bit wide (new bunions). But what helps the most is Squealy got me into a pair of boots with a wide (102) Full Tilts that also have a very easy on and off design due to the removable tongue. Came in to rent skis back in Feb and the process was fine, but the issue was with the binding adjustment. Gave them my height, weight, ability level, and turns out the bindings were not adjusted properly. Ended up getting my ski caught on a turn and the ski did not pop free during the fall...knee twisted and popped. Just got an MRI last weekend and turns out my ACL is completely torn (along with torn meniscus, strained MCL, and bone bruise, so it was enough force to pop the ski free if it was adjusted properly) and will need full reconstruction. Unfortunately the ski popped off too late due to improper set up. Always heard good things about this shop, but I guess you can never trust rentals. read more

I needed some new ski boots. I was reluctant to shop for my ski gear in my home surf town. However, when I called a shop in Big Bear, Trevor referred me to Squeely at Hansen's. Trevor said Squeely knows his stuff and used to ski competitively at a very high level. A scheduled an appointment to get fitted by Squeely, and he did not disappoint. He immediately noticed my high arch and supinated right foot with out me mentioning a thing. He understands that having comfortable boots are critical to a great ski experience. He spent plenty of time with me, performing a heat mold for the ski liner, getting me a foot bed, and making sure I had a great fit. Just recently bought a pair of ski boots on sale and had an incredible experience with custom fitting by Squeelie. My feet pronate quite a bit, but he was able to adapt a custom molded insole along with shin padding to compensate. I've never had a better fitting boot in 40+ years!
