Great stop for a sweet treat after being in the sun all day. I ordered the strawberry shortcake stuffed with cream of ice cream, and it was delicious! As a tourist, this place was highly recommended and I can see why. As far as the sno-bliz, you get a bang for your buck. The cup pictured was $10 and you get more than enough to enjoy. I will say the service wasn't the most pleasant as we went during a pretty busy time of the day which definitely impacted my rating. The storefront is pretty compact with no inside seating, but there are two benches outside (though not enough to fit a large group). So if you're looking to spend your time here while enjoying your iced treat you'd have to be comfortable with possibly standing if the benches are occupied. read more

It is like going back in a Time Machine to see the years and years of history in this family run establishment. Food/Beverage: They take making the sno-bliz creations very seriously and you must think hard how large of a snow blizes that you want. On the wall, there are various cup sizes but keep in mind they fill the cup over the brim so you will have a lot of whatever you get. We ordered the smallest cup ($4 each) and we had peach for one and early gray for the other. The early gray was the real start with the delicate but delicious early gray flavor. It is hard to choose just one. Service: Our server was quick and efficient. There was not a long line but does seem that it takes time to make the sno-bliz so please keep that it in mind for your visit. They take cash and credit cards but cash may be preferred way of payment. Hansen's has been my 'go to' place in New Orleans my whole life and I'm in my 70's. But, has it changed ! And, the college students working don't have the charm of the family owners- there doesn't seem to be the pride and love for the product- it's not a snowball, it's Sno-Bliz !!! So, in changing thins, my go to is cream of coffee which I ordered. It tasted different and I was later told that they now have two Cream of Coffees- a decaf and regular. Apparently to get the old recipe I was to ask for the decaf. Seems like I should have been told that there were different in flavor- not just caffeine presence. Luckily it wasn't a terrible wait bc we went in October, but I imagine in the summer months you'd melt before ordering your sno ball. I made it to order and it was worth the wait! I ordered a Peach cream and nectar. First let me say the ice in these things is the best ice you'll ever have. I'm from SATX and we have "raspas" that ice is crunchy nothing like this. This is waaaay better ice. It's like velvet ice! The flavorings were peak and the combination was everything. They have so many flavors and I wish to one day try them all or at least spend my life trying to try them all because I doubt I'd experience a miss everything would be a winner. Place gets packed with people enjoying their snowballs outside the shop. There is street parking available. Staff are efficient and friendly too. The ice cream was good, but nothing beats that pineapple dole whip like the ones you get in Hawai'i. The shaved ice is perfection. They had so many flavors to offer but I heard great things about wedding cake flavor. I ordered the $8cup of wedding cake and topped with condensed milk. It was a real treat to watch your dessert made right before your eyes. This treat was so sweet, delicious and taste like vanilla cake. You also get to keep this cool collectible cup as a keepsake. There is a couple of seats outside the store, but not many as there isn't any to sit inside, so be sure to keep in mind for a grab and go experience. I am obsessed with the concept of a snowball in general because I love ice and sugar, but Hansens texture of their ice was SUPERIOR. It was truly like snow and extremely soft. Their flavors were just so much better than other snowball shops. We got the snowbliz flavor and strawberry flavor. Snowbliz is a tarte strawberry and it was amazing if you like sour stuff. The people were extremely kind and worked as fast as they could. There isn't a ton of sitting options outside but we didn't mind. (We invited her to join us but she declined because of the sugar content. Which... fair.) Plan and time your visit well. Hansen's is a little out of the way and is guaranteed to have a line. I found myself awkwardly craning my neck at times to catch the shade. It's a tiny mom-and-pop place (it's been in the Hansen family for three generations) and the fans inside won't do much to cool you down until you take your first bite of a sno-ball. It tastes nothing like shaved ice. The texture is softer -- truly snowlike. I got satsuma (a tart citrusy flavor that you'll find on the menu of many NOLA institutions, whether edible or in candle form) and cream of earl grey. I could barely taste the earl grey, so I think I should've gotten another flavor, but the satsuma was heavenly. read more

Every year at Springtime, I hear the hype about Hansen's Sno-Bliz. A few months ago, I tried a Sno-ball from a different vender. It was good but it didn't blow me away. I recently had the opportunity to try one from Hansen's. The business started in 1939 by Mary Hansen. In 1934, her husband, Ernst Hansen, designed the Sno-Bliz machine, which creates fluffy, delicately shaved ice. Mary & Ernst's granddaughter is the current owner of this iconic shop. They have a wide variety of flavors to choose from ranging from classics like cherry or coconut to creative options like Honey Lavender, Thai Tea, & Watermelon Ginger. The texture of the ice is very fine, soft & fluffy as opposed to the other one that I had, which was the consistency of small ice pebbles. What also sets Hansen's apart from the rest is their technique of alternating layers if ice & syrup as opposed to filling the cup with ice and pouring syrup on top. It really makes a difference. The Sno-balls are also served in souvenir cups designed by local female artists and change yearly, so locals collect them. Interesting fact: During the summer they go through more than two tons of ice weekly. That's how popular they are. Worth the walk/extra detour! Hansen's store hours are limited, so I had to plan my NOLA trip around that. Unfortunately, I planned it on a day when most of the stores on Magazine St. was closed, so there weren't really anything to do. We ended up waiting in front of Hansen's before they were opened. I guess that's also a good thing we got there early, because there was already a line forming 15 minutes before noon. We were one of the first customers of the day, so some of the ice on the bottom of the cup were slightly chunky. It wasn't very consistent, but I heard from another friend who ordered that same weekend that theirs was pretty consisten. The ice on the top was superrrrr fluffy and melts in your mouth though. They have a lot of options for syrup - and all the ones I tried were very good. You can add as many as you want, btw. The girl who took and made the order for us had superb memory. We ordered 2 cups, with different flavors, but she got our order right despite me going back and forth with some of the flavors. She didn't even need to write it down. Apparently they made their own syrup (and the ice shaving machine) in house. They have some great flavors and it doesn't taste too artificial. read more
