Those reviewers who left negative comments for Hanto are the type who have eaten Americanized Chinese food their whole lives and have no clue what real Chinese cuisine is. I would bet most Americans ordering there do not even know how to properly order authentic Hunan dishes. Hanto is actually well-known among Chinese international students for its incredibly authentic Hunan food. When you get the menu, those who do not know any better just order from the Americanized Chinese section at the front. But those in the know flip to the last few pages for the real Hunan menu. The Hunan dishes here do not have that dull, artificial spiciness you find at American fast-food joints--it is that fresh, savory kind of spicy (the clams with chicken, for example, is incredibly fresh and spicy). The owner even offers a pig head meat dish that is first marinated in spices and then stir-fried--something truly rare and hard to come by in the U.S. The owner himself is super nice! We had such a great chat that he spontaneously gave us a complimentary plate of the pig head meat (we enjoyed it so much we forgot to take a photo). During Chinese New Year, the owner also gives out homemade sausages to Chinese/Asian customers. All in all, a huge thumbs up

Amazing meal at this hidden gem. Server Janice was warm, friendly and professional. The food was off the hook good. Highlights include the yummy wonton soup, the tender charred boneless spareribs and Ray's Crispy dumplings, as well as the Iron Plate (Sizzling) Beef with Mushroom and Shrimp Lo Mein. Excellent meal. Will definitely return to try the rest of the menu!

. I had been seeking an opportunity to visit a friend in Ashland, and this discovery turned out to be a wonderful bonus. The lunch special, featuring Garlic Beef with lo mein, was exceptional. I was also drawn to trying the boneless ribs appetizer. Although I forgot that the lunch special included soup and didnt try the soup but appears 6 soup options. The boneless ribs were outstanding, boasting a generous portion size, tender texture, and flavorful taste, although they were slightly cold. The garlic beef was cooked to perfection, with a rich garlic flavor and generous serving size. The accompanying lo mein was a superior choice to fried rice, and the chicken wing as part of the special was remarkably moist. Prices were very reasonable, considering the generous portion sizes. This establishment is an excellent spot . The bar area was cozy, with TVs and a warm atmosphere, perfect for a stormy day. The venue also features four dartboards, three separate rooms, and a modern jukebox or karaoke setup, making it an ideal location for a family to spend the day. With its extensive menu offering Chinese, Japanese, and sushi options, Hanto is definitely a place I will return to again for sure.

The decor makes you think it's just another Americanized Chinese restaurant, and the menu is really convincing. But if you look past the sushi and mediocre standard Chinese takeout, the authentic Chinese food is amazing and the service was great. The chef came out to take care of us and make sure we had everything we wanted. It really seems like they're trying to hide the genuine food behind a crappy front. Even though it's out of the way for me, 100% making a trip out there again!

I waitressed for a Chinese family for seven years in my youth. I ate their traditional food four days a week. Hanto is the BEST Chinese food in the area hands down. Super fresh, really welcoming and the chef came out to answer our questions. While the ambience is not up to standards of the food, it is so clean. Looking forward to my next visit!

The worst food I ever ate, the pork fried rice, the rice was hard and tasteless and the pork was dry. In there defense I never would have known that since I ordered Moo Shoo Shrimp. The egg foo young was over cooked and tasteless, but it did have awful tasting sauce you could put on top. The spare ribs were nothing but grizzle soaked in grease, yum yum!! The Pee King Ravioli was cooked to perfection if I ordered charcoal briquettes. Again they got the order wrong, I ordered steamed and I cant even describe how bad the filling was, it turns my stomach to even think about it. With food this bad its amazing that they have been able to stay in business this long. Save your money and go to a real restaurant!! read more

Hanto was the best Asian food anywhere in metro-west when they opened. The Mongolian Beef and Hot Pot dishes were OUTSTANDING! But things have fallen off a little in the past few months. I still eat there on a regular basis so I guess it is not that bad, but I miss the EXCELLENT food they served a little while ago. I hope I can revise this rating and go back to 5 stars soon. read more

First of all the pictures in their menu doesn't match any of the food they serve! The waiter said it does, but brought me a salad absolutely different from the picture, but he apologized and said I can refuse the dish. We didn't try many dishes from their menu, but sushi were pretty bad - they use wrong rice and the fish is not very fresh. The place is definitely overpriced for the food quality. read more

I have been to Hanto several times to meet friends. The atmosphere is pretty good, the service is good, and the live bands I have seen here are pretty good. The food at Hanto is so salty that my body was throbbing for a few hours after I had eaten. I don't think I will be eating more than appetizers at Hanto any more. They need to add very little to no salt to their food for it to be better. read more

Ordered the Ashland Roll and the Backdraft Roll, both were pretty bad. I'm not a huge complainer so I tried to not make a huge fuss about it. They did offer to comp us which was good. The service was pretty good and attentive. Nice folks. I also liked the atmosphere of the place. I REALLY liked the Hot and Sour soup. Might go back to try some of the other Chinese dishes, but sadly I won't be ordering sushi again. read more

I normally do take out from hanto but I was tired and decided to do delivery. I was told it would be 40 minutes. An hour went by and I called, concerned because I ordered sushi. The guy on the phone told me the driver had just taken my food and said they only had one driver tonight. I voiced my concerns about the food having been sitting out because I was told 40 minutes. He then told me to call with any issues. At this point I'm thinking to myself..what? Call him when I am positive I have food poisoning? But I wait again and then it hits 80 minutes, which is now double the amount of time that they told me. I call back and the guy basically tells me that he doesn't know where the driver is and that they are busy because it is a holiday weekend. To which I responded, I understand that but you gave me a time frame of 40 minutes - had I known it would be 80 minutes I would have chosen to pick up my food instead. I said the food should be free because it is likely inedible at this point and he said he couldn't. I opted to cancel my order instead and about 5 minutes later the delivery man comes with no knowledge of the order being cancelled. I had to fill him in and he had to take the food with him. I have ordered from here once a week for a couple years and they lost a loyal customer - their customer service needs some help. read more

If those places are upscale, think downscale here. -- Sweet and Sour Chicken (on a dinner combo): Six lengthy fingers with good meat-to-batter ratio, overcooked to over harden the crusts, and with sweet and sour sauce served in the side as standard practice. But what a sauce: very dark red, with intense flavor and good smoothness, similar to Lotus Blossom, but with the addition of pineapple chunks and slices of onion and bell pepper for a little crunch. The excellent sauce made up for the overdoneness. Above average to well above average. -- Egg Roll (on the combo): Standard old school model with relatively crisp exterior and a grassy green interior comprised of celery, with some pork in there too. Decent flavor but not intense. Good vessel for the duck sauce and mustard. They included far more than the promised 6 pieces and flavor was as close to the 1970s as it gets these days, thanks to the classic glaze and char. Some were perfectly fatty and caramelly moist or juicy, some were too fatty and borderline blubbery, and some lacked fat and were dry. On the average, above average, but the best were elite. Doable, but a little below average. Some highs, some lows, some promise. I don't envision this place joining my Chinese food rotation, but I can see a return to investigate more.

Doesn't look like much when you pass, but I was so hungry for lunch I just stopped by. When I walked in I saw the employees making fresh crabrangoons so I decided to order some as an appetizer. Let me tell ya it was worth it. I also ordered chow foon, and my friend ordered the noodle soup. Both were BOMB I wish I had pictures, but I ate it too fast. Henry the manager is a really cool guy, and seemed like he knew the regulars by name which was very impressive. He even came up to our table and talked to us. just came here to this restaurant like 5 hours ago, and i have to say the food is indeed amazing. i asked the waiter what would he recommend for sushi, he said a spicy tuna roll or spicy salmon roll. i questioned because every sushi place recommended it and i never found the good in it i ate it the spicy tuna is 99% amazing it would be 100 if i did not dunk it in soy sauce, it just ruins the sushi i would not try it at another restaurant, unless u like it, but coming here to eat it is 100% necessary the price is average, but should be worth more read more

I have eaten here 4 times now for sushi only and I will say that for a little town like Ashland its a great spot to have for takeout sushi - the spicy tuna rolls are actually spicy and the salmon nigiri (sushi) is rich and buttery every time so far. I can't say much about their other offerings other than the pork fried rice which was bland and not something I'd get again but as far as sushi goes it's not the greatest I've ever had but it's definitely a nice quality product with standard pricing. came here, to the first hanto, but i have to say, the one at northborough was better, though it was smaller by alot, it looked alot fancier on both the inside and outside. this place was basically the same, just not as nice which is the only reason from stopping it to being a 4 star. but i have to 100% agree about the fact that the food is amazing, it will never get better than it already is since it has peaked the level of best. that crazy maki though, is flawless, everything else is good, but the sushi is the best there read more

its just way to good to put it down to a 4 star. sometimes the service is bad but thats rare for me and my friends, but even if that happens, the food makes up for it 100x times over. the food is amazing, mainly the sushi. here is a tip to getting the best sushi, just order any sushi you want, and dont dip it in soy sauce and eat it. it tastes so much better. i would 100% recommend anyone near to go, its amazing read more

Pretty sure the people posting the bad reviews have never had REAL Chinese/Japanese food, or really good Americanized Chinese/Japanese food; because Hanto has both in spades. A bit pricey but worth it. Totally, totally worth it. Try the szechuan shredded pork and the tempura fried ice cream; you will not be disappointed. They deliver almost everywhere, too, and the food always arrives hot and made to order. read more

8 of us go to Hanto every Thursday for lunch. The hot and sour soup is outstanding, The food is good and the staff is great. Definitely recommend. read more
