Caesar salad wrap chicken - this was a sleeper hit. My daughter is a Caesar salad conissuer and this was right up her ally. And with avocado oil Caesar dressing, no garbage! Comeon. Grilled fish tacos - very fresh and good. I think there was a sauce but these were dry. It needed more sauce and some salsa. Mind you the quality was there, so I had no problem eating them. I initially gave them some grace because they had just opened, but I went back again hoping it was just opening-day issues and unfortunately had the same experience. I even reached out directly to share my feedback and never received a response. I really wanted to support them, but for the price and overall experience, I was left disappointed.

10/16/2011 "Hapa J.'s Kitchen Bar & Lounge" WTH ?????: I woke up and found myself surrounded by Grommies and An O'Neill Surf Goddess (Karen Helm), at perhaps The Most - Popular Surf Spot on The West Coast - "TRESTLES ('Lowers")." My Board was down The Beach aboard MCB Camp Pendlelton. I don't remember how or why, I traveled to "Lowers." I am glad that I did because: 1. "Lady K." is not only "Pure - Eye - Candy," but She is also "Graceful - Extraordinaire," while Surfing! 2. Of all People I run into My Little Sister (Shelby Detmers). I hope that She did not give me The Chicken Pox....LMBO (Get Well Soon, Sis) Well, I may not know how / why I ended up at "lowers," but I knew for sure that My Tapeworm was awake. Traveling southbound on El Camino Real in San Clemente, I ended up passing a few local eateries, and I decided to stop by Stewart's Surf Shop to ask for recommendations to a nearby "Grub Spot." It was suggested that I walk across the street to "Hapa J.'s Kitchen Bar & Lounge." As I approached the location, I noticed several Hotties washing clothes at a laundry mat on another corner from the restaurant. However, they "Paled - In - Comparison to the Native Hawaiian Goddess Hostess, and the "Drop - Dead - Gorgeous" Server, who reminded me of one of My Long - Gone College Dayz Girlfriends.. (But, I digress), It was a bit past 12p.m., and since The Temperature had risen to at least The High 70's, I decided to sit outside. Strapped - For - Cash (only $22.00 on-hand), I inquired but I was informed that there was not ATM on - site. Consequently, I perused The Menu for something that would be filling, but would also afford me the opportunity to leave "A Decent Tip." I decided upon "The Mixed Plate," which consisted of two scoops of White Rice, Shobyu Chicken, Teri Beef, and Huli Huli Chicken Breast. I had Partied enough the night before, so I opted for Water. (Note: this location is known for serving Primo's Draft all day long.) Cost: $13.00 Service: Outstanding (That Server checked on me more than an Emergency Room Nurse.) Meal: I ordered "A Simple Meal.' However, I was quite - impressed with how tender The Beef and Chicken were. I am not exactly the smallest person (6' 2" 250lbs), and that meal was more than Sufficient (In fact, I felt a bit as A Glutton for completely devouring it all. ) I had no problem leaving all of my cash of $22.00 for that Meal, and if that "Simple Meal," is any indication, I may just have to return soon for Their "Aloha Fridays." This place is a solid 4. This was my first meal EVER in San Clemente. My boyfriend just moved down here and we drove around to see what looked good and found Hapa J's to be the most welcoming. Walking in, I saw the bar and the big TVs with the Laker game going. Already felt like I was going to like the place. My boyfriend and I were seated in a nice big booth where the TVs had college basketball going. We asked our server to change it to the Laker game and she did so without giving us any problems at all. After getting settled into our booth, I felt like I was in a big cozy cabin, it felt nice. Took a good look at the menu and decided I wanted the spicy ahi poke bowl. The boyfriend wanted something reeally spicy and asked our server what she thought would be good. She recommended the potstickers with the special chili sauce on it. My boyfriend ordered it at a level 7 but the server suggested a 5 and offered to bring more sauce if he wanted it to be more spicy. Good call on her because the chefs apparently use ghost chilis as well as habanero. The potstickers were tasty and spicy, but just a little soggy for my taste. The ahi poke bowl was deeeelish. It came with this amazing spicy aioli and a little bit of seeaweed salad and ginger. I ordered it with brown rice and spring mix salad. The salad dressing was good, but just a little too much dressing for me. One thing I would like to note is how quickly our food came out. Literally 3 minutes after we ordered, our food was sitting right in front of us. It was pretty nicely plated too. We also order 2 beers..the Hawaiian wheat one I wanted was all out so the server suggested something similar which tasted like a Hef, yum. We didn't know it was happy hour, so it was kind of nice to see that we got our beers for half off when we received the bill. Hapa J's is probably my favorite spot in San Clemente. Because it's a bit off the beaten track, you don't get too many tourists and never have to wait too long for a table. The nachos and poke plate are my go-tos and never fail to impress. If you plan on getting the nachos, beware of how MASSIVE they are (but they're also massively delicious). FYI You can easily split them amongst 3-4 people and you may be too full to order anything else which would be a tragedy as everything I've tried on the menu is amazing. If you're ravenous, go for the nachos as your meal. Definitely best bang for your buck. If you're a poke fan, you will love their poke plate (bowl portion is available for less $$ every Monday, all day) With the poke plate, you have your choice of 3 sides. You can choose from: Mac salad, green salad, white rice, or brown rice. The fish is always so fresh and has me craving it throughout the week. Loud, noisy and so-so food. We tried all the different foods at different times of the day and it's just not consistent - in service, ambiance or food. We own property in Hawaii and it's just not the same 'Hawaiian' food. Hapa is thrown around way too easy. Hapa implies Hawaiian but it just varies in the approach. A bit of teriyaki. Some rice. Wella! Now it's Hawaiian food??? No, not like the Hawaiian food I've experienced from native Hawaiians - who are native Hawaiian blood! The noise factor is another issue. And the rinky dink chairs move around way too easy. We tried it numerous times and we finally gave up. Then we went to an event there (a large party of women) and it was still the same issue. It's become more of a hangout for the local trades by day and the younger patrons at night so I think a few drinks can make any food taste better. But you might pay for it later if you drink too many of those 'few drinks'. read more

I have such a restaurant crush on Hapa J's it's almost embarrassing. Almost. Since I don't make it to Hawaii as often as I would like, I am thankful that there is Hapa J's. This is also a place I take out of towners because everyone should eat here at least ten times in their lifetime and I like to make sure I'm there the first time. Not going to lie, I'm more than partial to their Kalua pork. It is one reason I will not even kid myself and think I could ever be a vegetarian. It's amazing. Actually no, it's #%^*ing AMAZING! Kalua pork quesadillas- awesome. The nachos with Kalua pork-divine. The MAN FRIES with Kalua pork......I need a minute. Every thing from the food to the service to the decor was wonderful! The drinks (white ginger cosmo) was delicious. Our waitress in the lounge was very enthusiastic and full of energy with exceptional recommendations. It defiantly made a fun experience above and beyond. Prices were good at happy hour with so many things to choose from, starting with the ahi poke trio bringing the islands right to us. I have had poke in hawaii and to try 3 different types was beyond my expectations. When we received the second appetizer it was also amazing. Pulled pork quesadillas with a mild chipotle aioli and a sour cream avo sauce drizzled all over the crispy outside. YUMMMMM. What a wonderful surprise and a rare find! Kalua quesadillas are D bomb!! Nothing like it anywhere! Spicy Tobiko Poke is a phenomenal spicy sushi appetizer! Ask for it coz you don't want to miss it! Way too much food to order appetizers. I'm not much of a fru-fru drink gal, but HIGHLY recommend the White Ginger Cosmo with that little surprise find at the bottom of the drink. Perfect balance of flavors. The vibe is warm and friendly - the chef even came and sat at our table! Food is a passion, travel and dine quite a bit, and subscribe to restaurant magazines. It isn't unusual for me to drive an hour for a good meal, but wouldn't drive 2 mins for a mediocre one. My friend called for her 90 yr old mother to make reservations and they said if we got there in 20 minutes they would seat us. We were there prior and were refused seating saying after I got hold of the manager that we were 2 minutes late even though initially we were there early. They have no integrity and are liars. If they treated a 90 year old American Italian woman this way I wonder how they treat their parents and grandparents. There was a young Asian women behind the bar with the tall pasty white faced boy. Shameful behaviour her being Asian and being Asian myself. We went to SONNY'S Italian Restaurant. I had dinner at Hapa J's on Taco Tuesday with my daughter. Guess what I had? Taco's, I had three and all were very tasty and bigger than I expected. my favorite would have to be the short rib with kimchi, I also had the watermelon and Pomegranate drink special. It was so delicious I had to have two, ( I wasn't driving ) Nice atmosphere and cool lighting. The place also seemed clean. I ordered the steak burrito wet with green sauce on top and grilled chiles . It is the best wet burrito in South OC hands down! They actually use real steak and it's plentiful. So tasty the chef came from the Ritz Carlton I believe. Bartender Colleen is an absolute sweetheart and the owners are very warm and gracious. Bar chairs are very comfy. This is now my go to spot for football and when I want a great meal as their menu is solid! Would recommend anyone to stop in for a bite and good vibes.
