All the team members I spoke with were really nice. I ordered the Beef Chow Fun & the Pork & Chive Dumplings. The dumplings were really good & tasted fresh. The Beef Chow Fun was a large portion, had a good consistency & a decent amount of beef but it was lacking flavor a bit though & if I would dined in I would have asked for more sauce to add to it's flavor. Every time I drive through Phoenix or Mesa, Happy Bao is a mandatory stop. Nothing beats their vegetable sheng Joan bao, vegan chow fun, and a choy with garlic sauce. The staff are speedy and friendly, and do a great job moving tables on a busy day. My non-vegan family also loves Happy Bao, especially the wonton soup and xiao long bao. read more

Went in for tomato egg noodle that I saw online then came out with tomato egg noodle, Lu ro fan, and dessert combo baos. Tomato egg noodle is good as expected but a bit sweet. Lu ro fan, braised pork belly with egg over rice is so delicious. The meat is so tender. This dish is not too salty and not too fatty. I want more! The dessert combo baos are the best! The red bean bao is tasty and the taro bao is to die for. They taste so good and I could not go back to eat the frozen ones nor the ones from other restaurants. I want more! They are really busy. I think because they got several stories on social media at that time. They told me when to come back to pick up the food so I went to shop at other stores within the complex. read more

As soon as my fam and I landed in Phoenix, I wanted to jump straight to Happy Bao's for lunch. I was craving some comfort food, and I wanted something soothing after our flight from SFO. I didn't realize that Happy Bao's was situated unassumedly inside a shopping plaza in Downtown Mesa. Though the storefront felt rather uninviting (and my hanger got the better of me when our server refused to seat us until she saw all our party members present), the food did NOT disappoint. Being spoiled by all the Asian food in SF, my expectations were blown beyond proportion. The noodle soup dishes we ordered, while simple, were full of flavor. The servings were also generous. (The pork wontons that came with my wonton seafood noodle soup were especially meaty!) I highly recommend Happy Bao's, like most of the other Yelpers here. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, so we ended up ordering four dishes: Xiao Long Bao, Spicy Beef Noodle (similar to Vietnamese Bun Bo Hue), Chilli Dumplings, and Roujiamo. I love the food here. I usually have an appetizer and bok choy with a different sauce every time. The food is always fresh, the service is always top notch. The only thing I wish they would do is provide better takeout containers. They put the food in the usual styrofoam takeout containers and by the time I get to my office, half the sauce spills into the bag. They should use containers with tight fitting lids. I've been waiting a long time to try this place and I'm so happy I did! I was lucky and arrived right before the last table was taken and right before a waitlist was started. I was quickly seated and given water, utensils, and sauces. I ordered the spicy wonton dumplings and the mixed bao. The spicy wontons came out first. I am giving this place 4 stars because they were slightly cold and not as spicy as I expected even when adding extra chili. The Baos were 2 chicken, 2 pork, and 2 veggie. All of them were warm and so good! I thought I was pretty skilled with chopsticks until I encountered these lol they are a great size. Surprisingly, the veggie one was my favorite! This place is inside of a plaza with lots of other restaurants but people were flocking here. After tasting the bao, I can see why! Me and my twin love to go out to eat together and we decided on this little spot that is located in a small mall with other little restaurants. I'm so happy we chose this place. We both ordered the beef noodles and dumplings with pork and veggies with a chili sauce to dip in, soo good! Only recommendation I would say is just cook the beef in a little longer so it can be a little more tender for the noodles. The waiters were very attentive and never sat in one place. I've been to Happy Bao several times before and it's one of my favorite places to take people when they come to town and they always love it. Today was no different! I took my friend and her husband and both loved it. We each ordered a different kind of boa bun and shared them, all were delicious! We also got a couple different noodle dishes to share and they were just as good as the buns. Our favorite thing to get there is the sweet custard buns for dessert. I know you'll be stuffed after eating the meal but trust me, you have to save some room for these! The service was really fast and friendly. The restaurant has a hole in the wall vibe and it's not very big and always busy but they always seem to be able to get us seated pretty quickly somehow. I wanted to get some dumplings and noodles to celebrate lunar new year but sadly did not have the best experience at Happy Bao's. We came on a Wednesday night during dinner time so we expected a longer wait which was fine. We waited for about 40 minutes for a table. The table we got was outside the restaurant next to the two kiosk for take out orders and waitlist. It was a little awkward eating and having everyone that was waiting in line stand so close and watch us. Ordering was easy since it's done through the QR code on the table. We had to wait for about 20 minutes between each dish that came out but everything was almost cold by the time we got our food. Dan Dan Noodles (4/5): This was definitely the best dish that we tried here. I loved the five spice seasoning and it reminded me a lot of other Chinese dishes that I've had. The sauce was full of the flavor and the cucumbers and peanuts added a nice crunchy texture to the dish. Signature dumplings (1/5): These came out cold! It was very doughy and the presentation of the dish was also not there. Sheng Jian Bao Combo (2/5): I only liked the flavor of the pork bao. The chicken bao was very dry and chalky. The veggie bao tasted like chemicals. Sheng jian baos are supposed to be moist and have soup in them but these were all very dry. I wish I had a better experience here. Coming from California, I have high expectations when it comes to Asian food and have yet to find a good Chinese restaurant in Arizona. read more

Well, where do I start? First of all, big shoutout to my niece Bella for tipping me off to this magical spot!! I've been coming to the Mekong Market and bakeries for the past 3ish years now, and I just noticed this place, which is kinda sad as I'm about to embark on a cross country move next month. Well, I'm so glad I made time for a visit. I'll start with the size of the restaurant, this is a smaller yet functional place to enjoy your meal. The servers are constantly busy, but will greet you as soon as they can. There are a couple of tables outside, as well as a larger elevated table for larger groups. The Food: I chose the Beef Noodle Soup and the Signature dumplings wow!! The beef broth was perfection, the broth was savory bursting with that beef taste, I paired it with the dumplings making it a most delicious meal. Plenty of parking outside as well. I want to try everything on the menu, which means I'll be heading back before I leave Arizona. Service is fairly quick, they do come around often to fill your water cup. Wow, so glad I came across this place when I was visiting Phoenix! Was craving Xiao Long Bao and this place really delivered on taste and quality! This place may be small, have limited seating, and be the definition of a hole in a wall; but I left feeling satisfied. The Xiao Long Bao and nice thin skins that held all of the wonderful soup and flavor. The Pan Fried Baos had that nice crispy bottom but fluffy tops. The Lamb Dumplings were also really unique, with that distinctive lamb flavor that was well complemented by the spices and seasoning that they used. If you come when they are busy, expect service to be a bit slow. But even then, I still think it was worth it and would definitely want to come back again next time! :) read more

I tried this wonderful restaurant recently and came back for some more happy bao goodness. I have no idea what this dish is but it was awesome. It had shrimp, noodles, in a curry type sauce. Really good! My family have been coming here for years, and the food is always authentic and consistent. You can't go wrong with any of the pork dumplings - they're juicy and everything I want in a dumpling. We also love the pork sheng jian bao - less juicy than the dumplings but still crispy and delicious. The roujiamo is also pretty solid with a lot of filling, and the signature liang pi is nice and refreshing. My parents recently purchased a bulk of their frozen dumplings (which I had no idea they sold) and they were absolutely delicious, juicy, and just as good as eating at the restaurant. At times there can be a long wait (occasionally weekends) especially since the restaurant has limited seating, so be prepared for that. Other than that, I have no complaints and would be excited to come back to try some noodles and other dishes on their menu! read more

I love the thinness of the noodles, the flavoring of the sauce and meat, the peanuts, and cucumber slices in the dish. It's so good we always get minimum 2 orders of it with the group. The Dan Dan noodles here are a bit different than the ones we had before at other places. They don't have the numbing flavor which is the reason why I love it! The pan fried buns are super good! Perfectly crisp and the meat inside is juicy. The Xiao Long Bao is really good and they actually have soup in them which is hard for many places to do well in. The three of us ordered a little bit of everything: Cucumber Salad, 私房黄瓜沙拉, $6.99 (Fresh, cut cucumber tossed in refreshing and light dressing): Although on the saltier side with no spice, it was moreish. I couldn't get enough! Spicy Chili Wontons (6pc), 红油馄饨, $7.99 (Classic Hong Kong style wontons in chili sauce): Now I really really enjoyed these. They remind me of my mom's wontons and mmm MMM! I wanted an order all by myself. Pork Green Chives Dumplings (10pc), 猪肉韭菜水饺, $8.69: The dumplings here have a thicker skin for sure which isn't bad. You get the bounce and the chew to help tone down that aromatic garlic chive. Dan Dan Noodle, 四川担担面, $9.99 (Spicy minced pork in chili five spice sauce topped with cucumbers, scallions, cilantro and peanuts in egg noodles): I have a weakness for Dan Dan Noodles. This one had good flavor and okay spice. I kept going back for more of these noodles. Hong Kong Fried Rice, 香港炒饭, $10.99 (Crispy bacon and bbq pork with peas, carrots, lettuce, onions topped with alpine nuts): I've never had Hong Kong fried rice but I'm hooked. I need more! Xiao Long Bao (8pc), 鲜肉小笼包, $10.99 (Pork, scallions, chicken broth): These were some okay XLBs. They're no Din Tai Fung but they do an excellent version. I wish all the spicy dishes had that tongue-numbing feel. They also seem to cater their heat-level to more western levels. As for the service, the service could use work. The younger lady that works here isn't the most friendly but oh well. It's a small place and they require your whole party to be present before they seat you. Got takeout on a Saturday night and the restaurant was really busy! Food came out as scheduled via Uber Eats pick-up. We ordered the beef noodle soup and dumplings combo. The beef noodle soup was flavorful and had a lot of pieces of beef! A little spicy as well. The noodles are the thin kind. Since we got take out we poured everything in a bowl - the portion was huge! My husband enjoyed it. We also got the dumpling combo, which came with 4 types of dumplings, 5 each. It was hard to tell what was what but they were all pretty good.
