Any time they drop by, they normally hit up a Chinese spot to grab takeout. This time, it was only a few items as the hubby and I ordered more food via DoorDash to add to our meal. If memory serves, the dumplings were good. The filling plump and the wrapper soft with a nice chew. Tho I kinda remember it being a tad on the thicker side. I usually buy dim sums here now and then. Today, I came here to pick up a reserved order for my aunt to visit her late father-in-law for Ching Ming. Their shop is small, one table inside, so I don't know why it's called a restaurant when it's not. They have hot cooked food to order to go as well, displayed in the front. A line was formed, around 10-13 ppl, 10:20am. They were in a hurry to buy dim sum to visit their late loved ones as well. We ordered a lot. All fresh and all the fried crunchy pastries were still crispy when we arrived at the cemetery. We had- 2 kinds of savor pork puffs, MaLaGo, flat mochi red bean & custard filling, rice mochi, sesame balls, beef & shrimp chung fun. Their price is pretty fair. It's affordable. New Moon has more than just dim sum. They also have fried rice, chow mein by the pound and fried chicken. I like this restaurant because the food is decent and there isn't a long line like some other over-hyped dim sum restaurant on Stockton St. The Chinese donut, fried chicken and porridge tasted fine. Obviously there are plenty of down home dim sum places in SF Chinatown. By trial, error, and dumb luck, you'll eventually find places that make a certain type of dim sum that is consistently better than at other places. Now I haven't tried everything New Moon makes, but these 3 items are why I give this place a solid 5 stars: - Radish Cakes (not taro cakes)...nobody makes it better as far as I've experienced. - Shrimp and Chive dumplings. It's always awesome here. - Deep Fried Stuffed Tofu Squares. Simply epic, and I'm getting a Pavlovian response as I write about these. This five star rating has nothing to do with atmosphere (hole in the wall take it out) or with service (which is plenty friendly). The other dishes I've tried here range from average to solid, but the above 3 is what makes this place 5 stars in my book. read more

I was very hungry, so my eyes were bigger than mine stomach. I ordered a bunch of dim sum, it tasted ok to me. I'm not sure if the texture of the food was right or the taste was on point. It felt a bit off to me. However, the lady selling seem nice and friendly, so the 3 stars is for her, not the food. read more

Took a day trip to SF. Walked by this place and thought we'd get some food. It's been 15+ years since I've really eaten in Chinatown and I've only fond memories. This definitely left a bad taste for me. If I could give them 0 stars I would. Paid just under $19 for 4 items; small box of chicken feet, small box of braised beef w/ radish, 2 pieces of their rice rolls, and an order of their turnip cakes. Not cheap so I would expect some ok quality food. Chicken feet - Was not cooked enough. Skin was still tough and chewy unlike what you'd get at a traditional sit-down dimsum restaurant where it's fall off the bone tender. Braised beef w/ radish - The flavor was ok but the beef was way too tough and the radish wasn't prepared properly. I don't want a mouthful of radish fibers after biting into it. I'm sure everyone can understand. Rice rolls - The rice rolls aren't bad but they're not good either, just average. It's not exactly something you could get wrong. The rice rolls itself was pretty flavorless which is better than tasting bad. The sauce they gave us was just soy sauce. Regular soy sauce!!! Maybe I'm too picky but I expected the sauce to be what one would expect to get with rice rolls. Turnip cake - Probably the 1 item we ordered that was decent and I was willing to finish. I'm a sucker for turnip cake so when I saw it I had to get it. They used large pieces of turnip slivers in this so you know you're getting some with each bite. The biggest let down was that there wasn't much of a turnip flavor to it. It was also only gently fried which, to be fair, isn't a big issue; I put it in my air fryer at home to crisp it up to my liking. But the dumplings are the best - if you want dumplings just order those and don't fill up on other stuff!!! Second time there are very tasty. A pretty okay spot in china town, I feel it would be appreciated more if it wasn't surrounded by such quality restaurants. It's your average hole in the wall location. However, it does have its own charm to it. The dim sum is what makes me suggest you come here at least once. Had I just picked up some food and headed out, the dim sum itself would get a higher score. The service was okay, I wouldn't say it was welcoming or even too accommodating. There are a couple tables available but they quickly fill up. Overall, I think you should give it a shot but be aware of the small location. Perhaps order it to go. read more

My mom and I came here on Saturday afternoon to grab some dim sum to munch on. We ordered a chive dumplings, har gow, char siu bao and veggie meat bao. The dumplings had a decent amount of shrimp for the price and the skin was not too thin nor too thick. There were good; will definitely order again. There are a ton of fast-food, grab n go type dim sum vendors in chinatown, but new moon is one that stands out to me (as good as good mong kok!!) They speak canto and mandarin. There was also an adorably happy, maybe teenage boy that spoke English and was super kind. I got the shumai (classic meatball dumpling) and ham sui gok (crispy mochi shells stuffed with meat and chives). Both were made extremely well. I actually think the ham sui gok was better here than good mong kok, maybe the best I've ever had. I was in Chinatown planning to get some dim sum for lunch from the Good Mong Kok bakery, but for some reason, there is a long line out in front. That place is always crowded but I'd never seen such a long 20 people strong line before. The stuff there is good with the most variety but seriously nothing is worth that kind of wait. So remembered this place, just a couple of blocks north at corner of Broadway, another similar bakery I'd been to many times before. Here it's busy but no ridiculous lines. Granted the dim sum variety here is a bit less than Mong Kok, but of what they do have the quality and price is perfectly competitive - most items at about $2.20 for three pieces. Anyway they have my favorites, which are the round rice flour chives and shrimp dumplings, the white spongy fermented rice cakes, and the deep fried sesame coated glutinous rice flour balls with bean paste filling. Can't go wrong with this place if you are looking for a quick and cheap lunch with no wait. read more

A friend told me about this deli/restaurant and touted their ox tail stew as a better one. While walking to work after a stop at Walgreen's, I came in and ordered a pound and a half to take home for dinner on a recent Monday (). After a late dinner plan change, I ended up cooking sukiyaki in the Inner Sunset. Remembering my morning purchase, I gnawed on a piece when I got home to "try while fresh". Sadly, the meat clung firmly to the bone. A few days later, this proved me wise as the remaining ox tail, carrots, and sauce simmered in a pot for another hour. My criticisms are the sauce is cloyingly sweet (mixture of sugar and five spice flavors) and the butcher did not use a sharp knife in chopping (numerous bone fragments). Apparently, the price rose recently to $7.50 per lb., on a par with some premium cuts of beef. My favorites for ox tail are still Pacific Court in Chinatown but it's only available Mondays and Fridays. Perhaps their other offerings are better... hopefully. read more

I come here to get the duck feet - they are flavorful and soft, perfect for my soup rice noodle with tender greens. Sometimes I would get their other deli items but for whatever reasons, they don't go bad very quickly even if you don't touch it and have it in the fridge. We had lunch here couple weeks ago - as you see from the pics, we had the mixed beef tripe soup fun and stir fried thick rice noodle with shredded duck. The soup fun was good - the mixed tripe was flavorful and delicious. Besides the stomach, tongue and spleen. The stir fried dish wasn't as good - the fat rice noodle is not what we expected and the duck did not taste like duck. read more

Stopped by here to try their everything bun (I know...weird, I just randomly walked into a random store and got the most random bun). I originally wanted the chicken veggie bun, but the lady behind the counter said that they were cold (I got there around 4-5pm). So instead, I got the combo bun. It has the sausage (lap cherng), egg, mushrooms, chicken, and veggie kinda deal. It was okay. Filling and it was almost $2 for a single one. Most probably won't be coming back to eat this again. Better har gow than most. I think they put some dried shrimp in there which adds a little extra texture and umami. The dumpling with the shrimp and chives though was a bit too greasy and perhaps overcooked. read more

Well, you can get dicon raddish pig skin, chitlins and braise tripe and other cow internals (as seen in my uploaded pictures). So if you are like Andrew, by all means try them out. Sure from the outside it looks really ghetto... sure, it's a hole in the wall and there's a whole half of a fried pig hanging.. but that's what you're going to get for some authentic Chinese food. Forget about panda express and all the other chinese food places you've been to.. beef broccoli and sweet and sour chicken is NOT chinese food. I've been going here since I was a kid and being a person that visits chinatown a lot... I know what's a good place, and this place has bomb food. Not only that, there's times if you ask if they have a certain vegetable (galang or eungchoi) they always say they have it.. and then you'll see someone running outside and coming back with it from the market nearby. This was one of my favorite spots in Chinatown. They closed for a bit and then reopened, and things have changed. 1) No table service anymore - you buy at the counter and then can sit and eat if you want 2) no more of the delicious roasted meats (the pork and duck were fantastic) - mostly now dim sum items with noodles and a couple of other dishes. 3) the food was, as always, very inexpensive, but not very hot I would still say worth it for a quick and inexpensive lunch in Chinatown, but not the destination spot it used to be. read more

We've all worked in food service before and don't like being annoying customers, so when we realized we wouldn't get there until 6, we picked out our items ahead of time from the online menu so we'd be quick. As soon as we sat down, the waitress informed us they'd be closing at 6:40. Okay, no problem, we knew what we wanted. We told her we wanted the dinner combo A. She said no, we don't serve that this late. Uh, okay. Dinner combo B? Nope, not serving that either. She grabbed our menus out of our hands and pointed to the only combo we could order. We hadn't seen this part of the menu before and asked for a second to figure out our choices. Instead of giving us a second, she stood there and glared at us. My friend tried to quickly choose a couple of items. "We're not serving those this late." We finally just left without ordering. TL;DR do not be deceived by the title "restaurant" because apparently, they do not serve food. read more

First we went to Good Mong Kok for some shrimp dumplings and siu Mai ($2.8/ 3 pc) then we stopped by New Moon further up on Stockton st and there was a longer line so we decided to try some stuff. Their dim sums are even cheaper, $2.39/ 3 pc! Next time I'll try the shrimp dumplings and siu mai so i can compare them with good Mong Kok but the chive dumplings (round ones) were pretty good. Standard take out dim sum place on Stockton. They have a great variety of food at great prices. Honestly having lived next to Chinatown and gone to all the dim sum places there's not much variety difference between stores. I have tried chia-siu (roasted pork) bun at every store and some have the buns more juicy, other sweater, other tender. But none of them are bad or so great you must line up for. New moon is no exception. I tried their chicken feet and it's great. Their pork bun was great too. Nothing that'll blow me away but great place for a quick bite if you are around. read more

from outside it looks like a small hot deli, the restaurant inside is very small, not the kind of place to bring your family , not enough room for that. I ordered a rice plate with two items, on the wall it was priced at $7 but when I ordered to eat there the prices was more, with a soda it was $11 , but they serve it on a plate and include a small bowl of soup, so it's worth the higher price to eat there, they had all the popular Chinese dishes, but they serve more of the authentic home style dishes like the inards, the beef tripe, pig's feet, lamb stew, pork blood, pig skin, pig's snout in soy sauce, intestines, etc I thought the food was pretty good, Ive been here many times, but I mostly order deli items to go, the service was excellent. read more

Definitely not what I expected, but my uncle wanted roast duck and wanted to eat here (after the place on the corner of Broadway and Powell was deemed too crowded). Anyways, my uncle is a regular here. So regular that apparently, we got to sit in the unvisited upstairs portion of the place. Anyways, the place was pretty good, and the dishes and utensils were pretty clean. We had roast duck, salty fish fried rice, egg plant, a beef dish, and some spinach. All pretty tasty. Additionally, the staff is pretty friendly. And definitely some of the nicer ones I've seen in the SF Bay Area. Except we had a little issue with one of em, who according to my aunt, is SUPER forgetful and always messes up the orders. tisk tisk tisk. But overall 4 stars! read more

Food = good. We tried their gai jook (chicken watery rice soup) and their soy sauce chicken over rice. Both were delicious, fresh, and not full of grease. Prices = dirt cheap, but cash only policy. Service = good and friendly. I am not sure they're that used to English...but they try. I speak some Chinese, so they were nice to me. But they seem nice anyway. 3.5 STARS. I'm not quite a fan yet but it looks promising. Their Cha Siu (barbecued pork) looks good but it ain't. They didn't cook it at the right temperature where the fat renders out and softens. Or maybe it was a very bad cut of pork because the fat was dense and chewy. The Cha Siu had good color but the flavor was flat. No pop. I got two types of chicken wings and both are recommended. Soy sauce wings were juicy, abit sweet and lightly salty. Still good when they cool off. Deep Fried wings with jalapenos is yummy when still hot. They lose alot when they cool off. I hardly eat in Chinatown as the quality over the years has declined. Most places I go to make the food too greasy and oily. This place is surprisingly good. They have a different lunch special everyday of the week. Today I tried their roast pork meal which comes with a tofu soup, massive amount of rice, and some cabbage on the side. All for $5. Granted the meat was a little on the fatty side but otherwise it was a decent meal for $5. I also ordered the broccoli beef which came with really fresh broccoli and the meat was a little on the chewy side but not full of fat. This was $5.25 and came with the soup and rice. The place is pretty clean and the ladies serving us processed our order pretty quickly. I would definitely come back again if I was in the neighborhood. This is a place I would come to make big orders for party. I went to a lot of different Chinese places on Clement and Sunset before checking this place out. Amazing! I don't live in SF, so I can't say if it's the best in the city but it's probably the best I've ever had. I seriously compare all other General Tso' chicken to this one. Crunchy on the outside with a smooth chicken inside. It almost seemed like a french bread. The sauce was no joke ether. How I found this place god only knows... You know it's good when its busy! New Moon is busy but not too busy for you to get a seat and have a great meal. You also get served by really nice and friendly folks, not your typical abrasive chinese waiters! Nestled in the busy Stockton St, you can see from the window you can see all the goodies that they have. From the BBQ meats, Roast Ducks and all to the cooked dishes that I know to be real Chinese food! The best part? Its dirt cheap! you can get a huge portion of rice topped with roast meat or anything your heart desires for around 5-7 bucks! read more
